Studying for a university degree can be very demanding, as students must cope with a variety of academic, social and personal challenges. If these demands persist, and if there are insufficient resources with which to address them, they will eventually provoke stress. When stress is present for long periods of time, it can lead to academic burnout syndrome, the signs of which are emotional exhaustion, depersonalisation and inadequate personal accomplishment. This paper considers certain sociodemographic factors (age, sex, children, marital status, employment status, degree subject, faculty, academic year) in the identification of a risk profile of developing burnout syndrome. This study is cross-sectional, associative and ex post facto. The Maslach Burnout Inventory-Student Survey was administered to 445 students in the University of Granada. According to the risk profile obtained, first-year male students in Primary Education and Social Education courses are at risk of developing burnout syndrome.

Abstract: Introduction: Burnout Syndrome (BS) is related to chronic occupational stress, present in the life of medical students. This syndrome comprises three basic dimensions: I- emotional exhaustion; II- increased mental distancing from the work itself or feelings of negativism and cynicism related to the work itself; and III - reduced professional effectiveness. This study aims to assess the prevalence, risk factors for the development and symptoms associated with Burnout Syndrome in medical students from a district college, in addition to establishing a profile of students with a higher risk of having a BS diagnosis. Method: This is a cross-sectional observational study. The Maslach Burnout Inventory (MBI) - Student Survey questionnaire, specific version for students, which is a questionnaire of sociodemographic factors, one of predictive factors and another of possible somatic symptoms associated with BS were applied. The sample was obtained by convenience and its representativeness was calculated in relation to the total number of students. A student was considered to be at moderate or high risk of developing BS when they had one or two altered BS dimensions, respectively. Results: 67.11% of the total students regularly enrolled from the 1st to the 6th year of the medical course answered the questionnaires. Of the total sample, 80.63% of male students and 81.06% of female students were identified as having a high or moderate risk for BS. The sociodemographic factors associated with the risk of developing BS were: age, who the student lives with, having children and doing paid work. The most statistically significant predictor was the self-management of tasks proposed by the Medical School. Conclusion: The prevalence of high risk and diagnosis of BS found among medical students was 26.44% and 3.95%, respectively. Differences were identified between the high-risk profiles for female and male students.

  Objetivo: El objetivo de nuestro estudio es analizar si el hecho de combinar los estudios universitarios y la Actividad Laboral Remunerada se asocia con el síndrome de burnout académico en los estudiantes de 1º curso de la Universidad de Vic-Universidad Central de Catalunya (UVic-UCC) y si existe una relación sobre el rendimiento académico. Metodología: Es un estudio observacional, transversal. La muestra comprende 301 estudiantes de 1º curso. Los instrumentos utilizados son una encuesta telemática y el Maslach Burnout Inventory-Student Survey. Resultados: El 16,9% de los estudiantes presentan Burnout Académico. No se observan diferencias significativas según el sexo. El 33% de los estudiantes combinan actividad laboral remunerada y estudios. De estos, el 14,1% presentan Burnout Académico. No se observan diferencias significativas en el rendimiento académico entre los estudiantes que trabajan y estudian y los que solo estudian. Conclusión: Los estudiantes presentan burnout tanto sí trabajan como no. Al inicio del primer curso del grado, un tercio de los estudiantes combinaban sus estudios con el trabajo y no se aprecia un incremento de burnout académico. El rendimiento académico no se ve afectado por el hecho de combinar el trabajo y los estudios universitarios. Abstract. Goal. The aim of our study is to analyze whether combining university studies and professional work activity is associated with academic burnout syndrome in 1st year students at the University of Vic-Central University of Catalonia (UVic-UCC) and the relationship on performance academic. Methodology. It is a non-experimental observational study of cross-sectional design. The sample consisted of 301 1st year undergraduate students in the UVic-UCC. The instruments used consist of a telematic structured survey and the Maslach Burnout Inventory-Student Survey questionnaire. Results. 16.9% of the students present academic burnout. No statistically significant differences were observed by sex. 33% of students have a remunerated job that they combine with their studies. Of these students, 14.1% have academic burnout. There are no significant differences in academic performance between students who work and study and those who only study. Conclusion: At the beginning of the first year of the university degree, a third of the students combined their studies with work. The fact of working and starting university studies does not produce an increase in academic burnout. Students show burnout whether they work or not. Academic performance is not affected by combining work and university studies.

Introduction: Effective management and prevention of widespread burnout among medical students in Hungary require thorough understanding of its relations to coping strategies, which lacks sufficient data. Aim: To explore the prevalence of burnout and its relations to coping strategies among medical students. Method: Cross-sectional study with 292 participants. Burnout was assessed by the Maslach Burnout Inventory-Student Survey. Coping strategies were evaluated by the Folkman–Lazarus Ways of Coping Questionnaire and questions about health-maintenance behaviours. Associations between burnout and coping strategies were explored with linear regression analyses. Results: The prevalence of high-level burnout was 25–56%. Both problem-focused coping and support-seeking were protective factors of exhaustion and cynicism, however, they predicted reduced personal accomplishment. Emotion-focused coping predicted exhaustion and cynicism and correlated negatively with reduced personal accomplishment. Health-maintenance behaviours were protective factors for exhaustion and predicted reduced personal accomplishment. Conclusions: Deployment of coping strategies that target the most prevalent burnout dimension may improve effective management of burnout.

Introduction Burnout syndrome is common among medical students, but findings about the gender differences in burnout are not consistent. The aim of this study was to assess high risk of burnout syndrome among medical students at one University in Serbia, by gender. Method A cross-sectional study was conducted at the Faculty of Medical Sciences, University of Kragujevac in 2014. The Maslach Burnout Inventory—Student Survey was used for assessment of burnout level. A questionnaire on basic socio-demographic characteristics (age, gender, marital status, habits, etc.) and academic performance (year of study, cumulative total average grade, length of study, housing, study financing, etc.) was used. The study included a total of 760 medical students (760/836 medical students; participation rate: 90.9%). Logistic regression analysis was used to determine odds ratios (OR) with 95% confidence intervals (95% CI). Results Significant gender differences were detected in prevalence of high risk of burnout syndrome (male students– 19.0% vs. female students– 12.8%, p = 0.024). A significant independent predictor of high risk for burnout syndrome in male medical students was study year (p for trend = 0.011), while in female medical students–study year (p for trend = 0.002) and use of sedatives (adjusted OR = 5.74, 95% CI = 1.96–16.77, p = 0.001). Conclusion Our results indicate the need to assess the risk of burnout syndrome at the very beginning of medical studies, in order to more effectively control the modifiable risk factors.

Background: Burnout syndrome (BOS), a work-related constellation of symptoms and signs, causes individuals emotional stress and is associated with increasing job-related disillusionment. ICU-BOS among Thai intensivists and ICU nurses has never been clarified. Methods & materials: We performed a multicenter, prospective cross-sectional study in 17 hospitals in Thailand. BOS-related data were collected from full time ICU physicians and ICU nurses using electronic questionnaires. ICU-BOS was defined when participants exhibited at least 1 of 3 aspects (depersonalization, emotion exhaustion and personal accomplishment) regarding the Maslach Burnout Inventory. Primary outcome was prevalence of ICU-BOS among intensivists and ICU nurses, and secondary outcomes were risk factors for ICU-BOS. Results: After a total of 193 electronic surveys were sent, 171 responders (ICU physicians n=66, ICU nurses n=105) were included in this analysis (88.6%). Overall prevalence of ICU-BOS was 62.6%. Using multivariate analysis, the risk factors for ICU-BOS among intensivists were 1) income <20,000 THB, 2) feeling of quitting caring for patients in an ICU within the past year, 3) need >2 holidays/wk and 4) patient’s ICU-LOS >5 days (adjusted odd ratio (OR) of 31.5, 15.9, 7.4, 14.9; p =0.04, 0.007, 0.035, 0.004 respectively). Risk factors for ICU-BOS among ICU nurses were 1) age >40 years, 2) ICU experience >5 years, 3) patient’s ICU-LOS >5 days, 4) nurse to patient ratio lower than 1:1 5) feeling assignments in the ICU were too numerous and 6) feeling of quitting caring for patients in an ICU within the past year (adjusted OR of 15.7, 4.6, 10.0, 68.7, 4.3, 5.3; p =0.009, 0.04, 0.004, 0.004, 0.04, 0.007 respectively). Conclusion: In this study, we found a high prevalence of ICU-BOS among Thai intensivists and ICU nurses. Co-independent risk factors for BOS were patient’s ICU-LOS >5 days and feeling of quitting caring for patients in an ICU within the past year.

Burnout is a work-specific syndrome with high incidence among intensive care unit personnel. Although several risk factors have been proposed, data regarding the association of anxiety and burnout among intensive care unit physicians are scarce. The aim of this study is to investigate the incidence of burnout and its association with state and trait anxiety and other sociodemographic, behavioural and occupational-related parameters, among intensivists. A population of intensive care physicians was evaluated using the self-completed Maslach Burnout Inventory and the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory Form Y, and data regarding sociodemographic and occupational-related variables were also recorded. From the 98 intensive care physicians addressed, 80 returned fully completed questionnaires; 26.9% of them presented with high emotional exhaustion, 37.5% with high depersonalisation and 41.5% with low personal accomplishment scores. Trait anxiety, fear of having committed a medical error and self-reporting difficulty when having to act accurately were independently associated with high burnout. In conclusion, burnout is common among intensivists and is associated with specific behavioural characteristics and personality traits, but not with work-related factors.

Abstract Introduction Burnout syndrome is a work-related chronic stress that is described as emotional exhaustion, a decreased sense of personal accomplishment, and depersonalization. it has been considered an important problem especially among workers in the health sector. Objectives The aim of this research was to study the prevalence of burnout among Syrian residents during the Syrian crisis, which started 9 years ago, and to assess the factors related to burnout syndrome. Methods A cross-sectional study was conducted to assess the levels of burnout syndrome; data were collected from residents doing their residency in 12 different hospitals spread over 8 governorates in Syria. A web-based Arabic version of Maslach Burnout Inventory questionnaire was used. The final sample size was 3350 residents from different specialties. SPSS V.22 was used to analyses the data using descriptive and inferential statistics. Results (93.75%) had a high level in at least one of the three domains of the burnout index, and (19.3%) of the residents had a high level of burnout in all three domains. Significant relation was found between gender, age group and affiliated authority variables and the levels of burnout. However no significant relation was found between burnout and the specialties or geographic variables. Males, residents in Ministry of Defense, and emergency medicine residents had the highest levels of burnout. Conclusion High levels of burnout was found among residents during the Syrian crisis in comparison with other studies, which highlights the role of the current situation in raising workload on the Syrian residents.

Background. The aim of the study was to evaluate the prevalence and extent of burnout among nurses in Singapore and investigate the influence of demographic factors and personal characteristics on the burnout syndrome.Methods. A cross-sectional survey design was adopted. All registered nurses working in Singapore General Hospital were approached to participate. A questionnaire eliciting data on demographics, burnout (measured using the Maslach Burnout Inventory, MBI), and personality profile (measured using the NEO Five-Factor Inventory, NEO-FFI) was used.Results. 1830 nurses out of 3588 responded (response rate: 51%). Results from 1826 respondents were available for analysis. The MBI identified 39% to have high emotional exhaustion (EE, cut-off score of >27), 40% having high depersonalization (DP, cut-off score of >10), and 59% having low personal accomplishment (PA, cut-off score of <33). In multivariable analysis, age, job grade, and neuroticism were significantly associated with each of the 3 components of the MBI. Staff nurses less than 30 years with high to very high neuroticism were more likely to experience high EE, high DP, and low PA.Conclusion. Younger nurses in Singapore are at increased risk of burnout. Personality traits also played a significant role in the experience of burnout.

During the training phase, the trainee teacher seems to be more and more confronted with discomfort and stress, due to the accumulation of demands and obligations. Many of them are mostly unable to take it any longer, which makes them vulnerable to the burnout risk. This research aims to study the academic burnout of trainee teachers at the “Centre Régional des Métiers de l’Education et de la Formation “(CRMEF) of the Rabat-Sale-Kenitra region during 2019/2020. Four hundred and fifty trainee teachers responded to a self-questionnaire comprising the Maslach Burnout Inventory-Student Survey (MBI-SS) scale in its French version, as well as certain stress factors. In agreement with the literature, more than 60% of teachers show moderate and high levels of academic exhaustion, the main likely stressors presented are financial instability, and training overload. Many trainee teachers cannot cope with the burnout syndrome, which conducts to stress and absenteeism during the training, we hope that this study will lead to some practical solutions to prevent and reduce the risk of academic burnout.
