Hastisetae are modified setae typical of Dermestidae Megatominae and are a primary defensive tool of both larvae and pupae against invertebrates and possibly vertebrates. Given their unique morphological features, hastisetae have recently been suggested as an additional character useful for larvae identification and possible source of information to clarify the systematics of Megatominae. Hastisetae are also recognized as important contaminants of stored products, work and living environment; in particular, the exposure to hastisetae seems to cause allergic reactions and the insurgence of skin rashes, asthma, conjunctivitis, and digestive system inflammation in humans. Starting from these basic concepts, the present paper provides a detailed description of the hastisetae of some Megatominae. Fine morphology of external and internal microstructures of the hastisetae is shown and compared at the genus level. The insertion on integument, the pedicel, the shaft, and the apical head are illustrated in detail, and the first observations of active defensive behavior based on hastisetae are recorded and presented. Possible implications to the systematics of skin beetles are proposed based on the results of the study.

In the living environment of the library community as an institution providing information services provide easy access to the entire community to access information for free easily and quickly. In the develop- ment stage of the collection of procurement processes gave birth to a quality collection in accordance with the needs of information user and have relevance to the development of the latest information technology so that the library as an information center can compete with other information centers. Collection development policy is a tool / means to direct all activities related to the planning, funding, selection, and procurement of library materials. The collection development policy is also a guide to developing collections directed. In order for the collection development policy can be implemented directed librarian as a waiter of information should always give confidence to library user in using library as source of information.

Anisakine nematodes responsible for human anisakiasis have been recognized in fish hosts for over a decade. They are larval stages, relatively simple in form, and lack many morphological features used for identification of the adults (e.g., cephalic structures, spicules, etc.). However, these immature helminths can be sorted into larval types on the basis of the anterior digestive tract formation and the position of the excretory pore. Problems in identfying larvae, even as to type, are often encountered in tissue sections that may not show those anterior regions containing features of the digestive system which are diagnostic for type sorting. Hence, it is necessary to reconsider the diagnostic value of lateral chords, muscle cells, etc., that are visible in all cross-sections. Fish which are eaten by the human consumer also contain larval stages of other roundworms (nematodes) than those responsible for human anisakiasis, as well as numerous species of adult nematodes.

With the development of technologies such as embedded system, communication, automatic control and so on , as well as people living standard continuously rising, people has also put forward a more safe and more comfortable requirement to their living environment. This Paper introduces the basic concepts of the intelligentized residence, and works out the solution of safety monitoring system of the intelligence residence, and finally designs intelligentized safety monitoring device base on ARM.

Bitter yam is eaten by the three major tribes in Nigeria, often as a special delicacy. The Ekiti people of Western Nigeria even consume it as a staple diet. It is also used by the locals for medicinal purposes. This tuber crop can however be toxic if consumed in the unprocessed state. Patients with bitter yam toxicity can present with neurologic manifestations such as convulsions and coma; digestive system problems such as vomiting; or allergic reactions such as itching. We present the cases of three siblings with bitter yam toxicity brought to our facility with age-and-dose-related symptoms after ingestion of undercooked bitter yam.

The Geraniales Phylogeny Poster (GPP) depicts the phylogenetic relationships between the five families of the order recognized here: Geraniaceae, Hypseocharitaceae, Vivianiaceae, Francoaceae, and Melianthaceae – down to the genus level – based on past and most recent research results. Unifying apomorphic, plesiomorphic, diagnostic, and nondiagnostic traits are mapped on the according nodes of the branches of the tree. All relevant morphological features are listed in a table to provide a clear overview and comparison between the genera. The purpose of the poster is to serve as a free, openly available educational tool and data resource for students, advanced scholars, researchers, and teachers.

A new genus and eight new species of urocyclid snails are described from eastern South Africa. The supra-specific taxa Kerkophorus Godwin-Austen, 1912 and Microkerkus Godwin-Austen, 1912 are considered distinct from Sheldonia Ancey, 1887 and are treated as separate genera. The diagnostic morphological features of all three genera are detailed and a fourth genus, for which there is no existing name, is described as new: Selatodryas gen. nov. A provisional key to genus-level taxa within Sheldonia s.l. is provided. Eight species are described as new: Kerkophorus piperatus sp. nov., K. vittarubra sp. nov., K. scrobicolus sp. nov., K. terrestris sp. nov., Microkerkus sibaya sp. nov., Selatodryas roseosoma gen. et sp. nov., S. luteosoma gen. et sp. nov. and Sheldonia fingolandensis sp. nov.

As relation between China and the West changed precipitately in the middle of the nineteenth century, there was a heightened demand in the West for knowledge about the “Flowery Kingdom”. But until well into the twentieth century, virtually the only direct source of information about China and the Chinese came from missionaries, in which respect they were often lauded as “cultural brokers”. As missionary communication of their experience provided Western readers with a vicarious experience of China, their cultural brokerage inexorably shaped Western popular perceptions of China and the Chinese in the West. These perceptions, when channeled politically, often had a defining effect on the nature and manner of the Western presence in China. This essay examines the China writing of John Macgowan, a veteran missionary from the London Missionary Society. What is interesting about Macgowan’s cultural brokerage is that unlike other missionaries (e.g., Arthur Smith) who often struggled with the difficulties between the missionary enterprise and Western expansionism, Macgowan uninhibitedly affirmed the intimacy between Mission and Empire. His writings on China and Chinese life — their social behavior and habits of thought, their relation with the living environment, the religious and cultural values by which they ordered their lives — therefore gave strong credence not only to the necessity, viability, and nobility of the christianizing project but ultimately to the sanctity of Western presence in China. In other words, Macgowan’s brokerage of his China knowledge exemplified the processes in which knowledge was legislated and communicated to establish the ideological conditions of the Western expansionism in China.
