To evaluate the effects of surface modification with stearic acid on the dispersion of some inorganic fillers in polyethylene (PE) matrix, masterbatches containing 20–40 wt% of stearic acid uncoated and coated inorganic fillers and the linear low-density polyethylene (LLDPE) films containing 3–7% stearic acid uncoated and coated inorganic fillers were prepared. Two types of inorganic fillers used in the masterbatch included bentonite and silica. The structural change of inorganic fillers, whose surface was modified with stearic acid, was studied using IR spectroscopy. The dispersion of inorganic fillers in LLDPE matrix was evaluated using scanning electron microscope (masterbatch samples) and optical microscope (film samples). Changes in the melting temperature of LLDPE in the presence of inorganic fillers were evaluated by using differential scanning calorimeter (DSC). The mechanical properties of the films were evaluated according to ASTM D882. Surface-treated fillers with stearic acid dispersed in the masterbatches and films better than untreated fillers did. Stearic acid did not change the melting temperature of the filler/PE masterbatches. The mechanical properties of the films containing stearic acid coated fillers were higher than those containing unmodified fillers.

The aromatic polyamides form a class of fibers having mechanical properties which are much better than those of aliphatic polyamides. Currently, the accepted morphology of these fibers as proposed by M.G. Dobb, et al. is a radial arrangement of pleated sheets, with the plane of the pleats parallel to the axis of the fiber. We have recently obtained evidence which supports a different morphology of this type of fiber, using ultramicrotomy and ion-thinning techniques to prepare specimens for transmission and scanning electron microscopy.

In this study, the traditional hot rolling to fabricate Al/Ti laminated metal composites (LMCs) was improved by using a pre-rolling diffusion process. The effect of the pre-rolling diffusion on microstructure and mechanical properties of Al/Ti LMCs were investigated by various methods, such as optical microscope (OM), scanning electron microscope (SEM), energy dispersive spectrometer (EDS) and tensile tests. The results show that, with increasing diffusion temperature, the thickness in diffusion layer was increased and the mechanical properties of LMCs were improved obviously, which was attributed to the optimized interfacial structure after diffusion process. In addition, the formation of TiAl3 intermetallic compounds (IMCs) was detected in the bonding interface, which played an important role in improving the mechanical properties for Al/Ti LMCs. The predicted results of stress-strain curves from rule of mixture (ROM) indicated that, there existed an extra interfacial strengthening in Al/Ti LMCs beside the mechanical properties provided by the contribution of constituent layers. The pre-rolling diffusion process is effective for the optimization of interfacial structure and improvement of mechanical properties in Al/Ti LMCs.

In this research work, cellulosic waste mango (Mangifera indica) saw dust used as the reinforcing material with low density polyethylene (LDPE). A number of samples of saw dust reinforced low density polyethylene (LDPE) composites were prepared by compression moulding technique. In order to improve the mechanical properties of saw dust-LDPE composites, unbleached raw saw dust fibers were modified by oxidation using sodium hypochlorite. FT-IR spectroscopic and scanning electron micrograph (SEM) analyses were done and the results showed the evidence of positive oxidation reaction. The effects of oxidized saw dust on the performance of oxidized saw dust reinforced LDPE composites were studied comparing with the raw saw dust-LDPE composites. The effects of fiber content on the physico-mechanical properties of composites were also studied by preparing the composites with different percentage of fiber loading (from 7.5 wt% to 30 wt%) for each type of composite. Mechanical properties such as tensile strength, tensile modulus, elongation at break, flexural strength, flexural modulus of the resulting composite were measured. Better results were obtained from oxidized saw dust-LDPE composites. Scanning electron micrograph and water absorption tests were carried out for all composites and improved results were found for oxidized saw dust-LDPE composites. Bangladesh J. Sci. Ind. In the present work, the influence of Cu content on microstructure, mechanical properties and exfoliation corrosion behaviors of Al-Zn-Mg-xCu alloy extrusions has been investigated in longitudinal-transverse (L-T) and short-longitudinal (S-L) directions by means of mechanical tensile and exfoliation corrosion testing combined with optical microscopy (OM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The results showed that a higher Cu content significantly decreased the fracture toughness and ductility of the alloy in S-L direction compared with L-T direction. Concomitant with the increase in Cu content, a transition in fracture mode was observed from transgranular dimpled rupture to intergranular rupture in S-L direction. Moreover, the exfoliation corrosion (EXCO) resistance of the alloy decreased as the Cu content increased and the exfoliation corrosion resistance of the alloy in short-transverse (S-T) direction was better than that of L-T direction. These results were mainly associated with the large number of coarse intermetallics caused by high Cu content in the L-T direction of alloy.

The aim of this research was to probe the potential application of nano-titanium dioxide (TiO2)/basic magnesium hypochlorite (BMH)-containing linear low-density polyethylene (LLDPE) composite film in grape fresh-keeping. Mechanical properties, transparency, barrier performance and antibacterial activity of the nano-composite membrane were measured, and results showed that the antibacterial zone diameter of TiO2/BMH on pathogen-Aspergillus niger was 31.4 mm, with mixing ratio of BMH/TiO2 to 2:1. It was clearly shown that the synthesized nano-composite films decreased mechanical properties and transparency of the membrane, and also had a significant impact on sensory score, mass loss rate, decay rate, ascorbic acid (Vc) content and titratable acid content compared with LLDPE films. Moreover, the results revealed that the LLDPE antibacterial film can be effectively used for storing grapes, preserving the flavor of grapes and had an obviously effect in prolonging grapes’ shelf life.

By using some types of means such as Optical Microscope (OM), Scanning Electron Microscopy(SEM), the testing of tensile mechanical properties and the testing of friction and wear, the impacts of the Al-5Ti-1B and Al-20Sr modification on the Al-16Si-4Cu-0.5Mg-0.2Mn alloy microstructure, mechanical properties and friction properties are researched. The results turn out that the modification can significantly refine the primary silicon and the eutectic silicon in the alloy, the Al-5Ti-1B mainly refined the primary silicon in the alloy, the Al-20Sr refined the eutectic silicon; the alloy’s effect of refinement after compound modification is better than that in separate metamorphism. Modification can improve the tensile strength and elongation of the alloy: the tensile strength of the alloy has been increased by 65MPa after its compound modification; also the elongation by 0.4%. Modification can improve wear-resisting property of the alloy and also its effect of compound modification is better than that of separate metamorphism. The modification mechanism of Al-5Ti-1B is that Al3Ti and TiB2 belongs to heterogeneous nucleation; while the modification mechanism of Al-20Sr is that the strontium changes the growth pattern of Si phase.
