This article presents theoretical and experimental calculations of the minimum thickness of a compensation lip used in external gear pumps. Pumps of this type are innovative technical solutions in which circumferential backlash (clearance) compensation is used to improve their volumetric and overall efficiency. However, constructing a prototype of such a pump requires long-lasting research, and the compensation lip is its key object, due to the fact that it is an element influenced by a notch and that it operates in unfavorable conditions of strong fatigue stresses. The theoretical calculations presented in this article are based on identifying maximum stress values in a fatigue cycle and on implementing the stress failure condition and the conditions related to the required value of the fatigue safety factor. The experimental research focuses on static bending tests of the lips as well as on the fatigue loading of the lips in series of tests at increasing stress values until lip failure due to fatigue. The tests allowed the minimum lip thickness to be found for the assumed number of fatigue cycles, which is 2.5 times the number of cycles used in wear margin tests.

AbstractThis paper presents the reliability estimation of fatigue strength of the material used for crank throw components. The material used for crank throw components is forged S34MnV steel and subsequently heat-treated by normalising and tempering. High cycle fatigue testing under fully reversed cycling (R = −1) was performed to determine the fatigue limit of the material. The staircase test method is used to obtain accurate values of the mean fatigue limit stress until a number of cycles up to 1E7 cycles. Subsequently, the fatigue test results depend strongly on the stress step and are evaluated by the Dixon-Mood formula. The values of mean fatigue strength and standard deviation predicted by the staircase method are 282 MPa and 10.6MPa, respectively. Finally, the reliability of the design fatigue strength in some selected probability of failure is calculated. Results indicate that the fatigue strength determined from accelerated staircase test is consistent with conventional fatigue testing. Furthermore, the proposed method can be applied for the determination of fatigue strength and standard deviation for design optimisation of S34MnV steel.

The evolution of the structure and assessment of the age limit of steel 12Cr18Ni10Ti upon fatigue loading is considered using neural network modeling and approaches of fractal analysis of the microstructure. An algorithm for processing images of the microstructures has been developed to improve their quality. An indicator of the fractal dimension of the image is used as a quantitative indicator for assessing the evolution of the microstructure of the surface metal layer. A quantitative assessment of the structures at different stress amplitudes is carried out in a wide range of low temperatures using the fractal dimension index. Correlation of the fractal dimension index with the run of the sample material is shown. The appearance of the main crack was observed in the range of 0.7 - 0.8 from the number of cycles to failure, after which the crack growth rate increased. At a lower temperature, the main crack is formed later, but further loading results in a higher crack growth rate. Formation of the secondary phases in austenitic steel at a lower temperature occurred at earlier stages than that at a temperature of t = +20°C, which led to hardening of the material. An artificial neural network (ANN) has been developed and trained for assessing structural changes in metal proceeding from the fractal dimensionality of the microstructure images at different stages of fatigue loading. The developed neural network made it possible to estimate with a sufficiently high accuracy the number of cycles before damage of the sample and the residual life of the material. Thus, the developed ANN can be used to assess the current state of the material in a wide range of low temperatures.

The importance of dynamic strength characteristics of LNG cargo containment system, various research efforts including dry-drop and wet-drop tests as well as sloshing test have been carried out by GTT, shipyards, oil companies, universities as well as classification societies. However, no explicit consideration with regard to the structural performance of insulation system toward the cryogenic environment is yet given. Besides only limited information regarding experimental procedure and analysis results is shared among stakeholders, and it acts as obstacles for the development of consistent CCS (Cargo Containment System) design criteria in an effective manner. Demand for LNG carriers with increased capacity requires further development of the design technology for LNG cargo tanks to meet the safety requirements due to the larger size LNG tanks. In this study, a systematic experimental research is required for the assessment of fatigue strength at cryogenic environment as well as impact strength of insulation system. The different sized mastic support has been adopted to compare the cryogenic fatigue performance. One of the main challenges in this work is to generalize the test results for use in case of other mastic support sizes. The aim of the study is to investigate the typical failure mode and obtain the S-N data under cryogenic fatigue loading. This study will be used as a fundamental study for the cryogenic fatigue assessment for the LNGC insulation system as well as a design guideline. The fatigue tests of Mark-III insulation system are carried out at room temperature and cryogenic temperature, and considered sloshing effect (R = −10). The load levels have been determined based on ultimate strength of reinforced polyurethane foam 12.2bar.

The aim of the study is to investigate and to prove that the fatigue failure of steel is initiated from the surface. Hence the preventif action of smoothening the surface that has been loaded by fatigue loading is very important. The specimen of AISI 1045 Steel is loaded by means of rotary bending fatigue. The fatigue loading will be interupted as the fatigue life reaching 50% of fatigue life and 75% of fatigue life. During the interuption the specimen will be grinded and polished, before tested completely until fatigue fracture occured. The fatigue life of each group of scpecimen based on the art of loading will be compared to the specimen tested by fatigue loading without interuption.The Miner rule is used to evaluated the test result. The influence of interuption and surface treatment is evaluated and analyzed. ABSTRAKTujuan penelitian ini adalah untuk menyelidiki dan membuktikan bahwa kegagalan kelelahan baja dimulai dari permukaan. Oleh karena itu tindakan pencegahan dengan memperhalus permukaan sangat penting untuk mencegah beban kelelahan baja. Spesimen dari AISI 1045 Steel dimuat dengan cara uji kelelahan lentur putar. Kelelahan pemuatan akan disela sebagai umur kelelahan mencapai 50% dari umur kelelahan dan 75% dari umur kelelahan. Selama gangguan lainnya yang spesimen akan digiling dan dipoles, sebelum diuji benar-benar sampai patah akibat kelelahan yang terjadi. Umur kelelahan dari setiap kelompok specimen diuji berdasarkan beban akan dibandingkan dengan spesimen oleh kelelahan bongkar tanpa aturan. The Miner rule digunakan untuk mengevaluasi hasil tes. Pengaruh gangguan lainnya dan perlakuan permukaan dievaluasi dan dianalisis.

Abstract An experimental evaluation of bending fatigue strength for austempered ductile iron (ADI) spur gears have been performed using Zwick fatigue tester. The gear material was manufactured by vertically continuous casting, in which the radius of the graphite grains is smaller. The Stress-Number of Cycles curve (S-N curve) for the bending fatigue strength of the ADI spur gears are manufactured without any specific surface treatments, and have been obtained by post-processing software. It was observed that when the reliability was 50%, the fatigue limit was 304.89 MPa. It has provided a reliable basis to rate the reliability design of the small gearboxes in automation later.

Flutter control of a bridge deck section using a combination of aerodynamic and mechanical measures, that is controllable winglets and rotating mass dampers, is considered. Deck and winglets are considered as flat plates for their aerodynamics. Self-excited wind forces are represented in the time domain using the Scanlan–Tomko model with Roger’s rational function approximation for flutter derivatives. Winglet rotation relative to the deck is the control input generated by the variable-gain output feedback controller that uses vertical and torsional displacements of the deck as measured outputs. Control using winglets enhances the critical speed to twice the uncontrolled flutter speed. Further attenuation of vertical response is obtained by using rotating mass dampers configured to provide only a resultant vertical force due to counter-rotating unbalanced masses. The rotors are driven at a constant angular speed, and start–stop criteria are applied. This generates additional vertical force on the deck that is mostly out of phase with its vertical velocity. It yields better control than the damper operated in a continuous rotation mode for a fixed number of cycles. A maximum reduction of 15% in root mean square vertical response is obtained when compared with control using winglets only.

This article deals with fatigue tests of polymeric hollow fibre heat transfer surfaces. The hollow fibres have an outer diameter between 0.5-0.8 mm and wall thickness 10 % of the outer diameter. These plastic heat transfer surfaces have some limitations but also many benefits. One of the limitations is the durability of plastic under fatigue loading. The heat transfer surfaces were subjected to pulsating pressure loads under different conditions (level of pressure, ambient temperature, number of cycles). Firstly, only an internal hydraulic pulsating load was applied and the behaviour of the hollow fibres was observed, focusing especially on the presence of leaks, ruptures, etc.Then, other conditions of operations were added. The heat transfer surfaces were immersed in a hot bath and loaded by internal pulsating pressure and high temperature simultaneously. Testing under different temperatures is important because the temperature significantly affects the material properties. The presence of leaks, ruptures and other possible damage was monitored as with previous tests.
