Turning continues to be the largest segment of the machining industry, which highlights the continued demand for turned parts and the overall improvement of the process. The turning process has seen quite an evolution, from basic lathes using solid tools, to complex CNC (Computer Numerical Control) multi-process machines, using, for the most part, coated inserts and coated tools. These coatings have proven to be a significant step in the production of high-quality parts and a higher tool life that have captivated the industry. Continuous improvement to turning coated tools has been made, with many researches focusing on the optimization of turning processes that use coated tools. In the present paper, a presentation of various recently published papers on this subject is going to be made, mentioning the various types of coatings that have recently been used in the turning process, the turning of hard to machine materials, such as titanium alloys and Inconel, as well as the interaction of these coatings with the turned surfaces, the wear patterns that these coatings suffer during the turning of materials and relating these wear mechanisms to the coated tool’s life expectancy. Some lubrication conditions present a more sustainable alternative to current methods used in the turning process; the employment of coated tool inserts under these conditions is a current popular research topic, as there is a focus on opting for more eco-friendly machining options.

This study is developing environmentally friendly cutting technologies of difficult-to-machine materials by MQL (Minimum Quantity Lubrication) cutting with Ti-B coated tools. In this research, we performed cutting experiments of difficult-to-machine materials in dry, MQL and wet conditions with non-coated tools. Cutting resistance in the MQL cutting was almost the same as that in the wet cutting. Moreover, damage of the cutting tool was not observed after the MQL cutting. Therefore the MQL cutting is expected to become an advanced cutting technology by using Ti-B coated tools because Ti-B film had high temperature lubricating properties and high wear resistance.

The tribological influences of PVD-applied TiAlN coatings on the wear of cemented carbide inserts and the microstructure wear behaviors of the coated tools under dry and wet machining are investigated. The turning test was conducted with variable high cutting speeds ranging from 210 m/min to 410m/min. The analyses based on the experimental results lead to strong evidences that conventional coolant has a retarded effect on TiAlN coatings under high-speed machining. Microwear mechanisms identified in the tests through SEM micrographs include edge chipping, micro-abrasion, micro-fatigue, micro-thermal, and micro-attrition. These micro-structural variations of coatings provide structure-physical alterations as the measures for wear alert of TiAlN coated tool inserts under high speed machining of steels.

Intending to lead organizations to continuous improvement, this chapter proposes a methodology that involves three axes: risk management, problem- solving, and feedback experience. This methodology allows organizations to characterize the experiences they have already confronted, as well as new experiences (which can be risks or problems) with the use of taxonomies established by the organization. It also enables them to capitalize and exploit their knowledge base. This work proposes a best-use approach of the past experiences that are similar to a current event and facilitate their treatment and provide solutions. The authors take the feedback as a point of articulation between the two methodologies because it is a mechanism that offers knowledge where it can be found that the organizations must avoid and take advantage of.

The article is devoted to the description of the experimental research method when developing a mathematical model for calculating the cutting speed based on information from the cutting zone obtained during the test run in the process of turning using steel coated tools as an example. This paper also presents the results of an experimental study which prove the effectiveness of applying the obtained mathematical dependence.

The cutting performance of cutting tools in high-speed machining (HSM) is an important factor restricting the machined surface integrity of the workpiece. The HSM of AISI 4340 is carried out by using coated tools with TiN/TiCN/TiAlN multi-coating, TiAlN + TiN coating, TiCN + NbC coating, and AlTiN coating, respectively. The cutting performance evaluation of the coated tools is revealed by the chip morphology, cutting force, cutting temperature, and tool wear. The results show that the serration and shear slip of the chips become more clear with the cutting speed. The lower cutting force and cutting temperature are achieved by the TiN/TiCN/TiAlN multi-coated tool. The flank wear was the dominant wear form in the milling process of AISI 4340. The dominant wear mechanisms of the coated tools include the crater wear, coating chipping, adhesion, abrasion, and diffusion. In general, a TiN/TiCN/TiAlN multi-coated tool is the most suitable tool for high-speed milling of AISI 4340, due to the lower cutting force, the lower cutting temperature, and the high resistance of the element diffusion.

The life of TiN-coated tools can be improved by a post-coating ion implantation treatment, but the mechanism by which this occurs is still not clear. Nitrogen implantation of both physical-vapor-deposited TiN and CVD TiN leads to surface softening as the dose increases, which has been attributed to amorphization. In this study a combination of transmission electron microscopy and atomic force microscopy was used to characterize the microstructure of implanted TiN coatings on cemented carbide for comparison with mechanical property measurements (nanoindentation, residual stress, etc.), made on the same samples. Ion implantation leads to a slight reduction in the grain size of the TiN in the implanted zone, but there is no evidence for amorphization. Surface softening is observed for physical-vapor-deposited TiN, but this is probably due to a combination of changes in surface composition and the presence of a layer of bubbles generated by the very high implantation doses used.

A complex network as an abstraction of a language system has attracted much attention during the last decade. Linguistic typological research using quantitative measures is a current research topic based on the complex network approach. This research aims at showing the node degree, betweenness, shortest path length, clustering coefficient, and nearest neighbourhoods’ degree, as well as more complex measures such as: the fractal dimension, the complexity of a given network, the Area Under Box-covering, and the Area Under the Robustness Curve. The literary works of Mexican writers were classify according to their genre. Precisely 87% of the full word co-occurrence networks were classified as a fractal. Also, empirical evidence is presented that supports the conjecture that lemmatisation of the original text is a renormalisation process of the networks that preserve their fractal property and reveal stylistic attributes by genre.
