Nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy was used for the qualitative and quantitative analysis of aqueous extracts of unroasted and roasted coffee silverskin (CS). Twenty compounds were identified from 1D and 2D NMR spectra, including caffeine, chlorogenic acid (CGA), trigonelline, fructose, glucose, sucrose, etc. For the first time, the presence of trigonelline was detected in CS. Results of the quantitative analysis showed that the total amount of the main components after roasting was reduced by 45.6% compared with values before roasting. Sugars in the water extracts were the main components in CS, and fructose was the most abundant sugar, its relative content accounting for 38.7% and 38.4% in unroasted and roasted CS, respectively. Moreover, 1D NMR combined with 2D NMR technology shows application prospects in the rapid, non-destructive detection of CS. In addition, it was observed by optical microscopy and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) that the morphology of CS changed obviously before and after roasting.

Abstract Employing an economical and non-destructive method for identifying pigments utilized in artworks is a significant aspect for preserving their antiquity value. One of the non-destructive methods for this purpose is spectrophotometry, which is based on the selected absorption of light. Mathematical descriptive methods such as derivatives of the reflectance spectrum, the Kubelka–Munk function and logarithm have been employed for the characterization of the peak features corresponding to the spectrophotometric data. In the present study, the mentioned mathematical descriptive methods were investigated with the aim to characterize the constituents of an Iranian artwork but were not efficient for the samples. Therefore, inverse tangent derivative equation was developed on spectral data for the first time, providing considerable details in the profile of reflectance curves. In the next part, to have a simpler and more practical method it was suggested to use filters made up of pure pigments. By using these filters and placing them on the samples, imaging was done. Then, images of samples with and without filter were evaluated and pure pigments were distinguished. The mentioned methods were also used to identify pigments in a modern Iranian painting specimen. The results confirmed these methods with reliable answers indicating that physical methods (alongside chemical methods) can also be effective in determining the types of pigments.

Although the intake of jack bean (Canavalia ensiformis (L.) DC.), an underutilized tropical legume, can potentially decrease the risk of several chronic diseases, not much effort has been directed at profiling the polyphenolics contained therein. Hence, this work aimed to identify and quantify the dominant jack bean polyphenolics, which are believed to have antioxidant and other bioactivities. Four major compounds were detected and identified as kaempferol glycosides with three or four glycoside units. Their structures were established based on UV-visible, 1D, 2D NMR, and HR-ESI-MS analyses. Specifically, kaempferol 3-O-α-l-rhamnopyranosyl (1→6)- β-d-glucopyranosyl (1→2)-β-d-galactopyranosyl-7-O-[3-O-o-anisoyl]-α-l-rhamnopyranoside was detected for the first time, while the other three compounds have already been described in plants other than jack bean. This new compound was found to have a higher α-glucosidase inhibition activity compared to acarbose.

The stability of aceclofenac under stress conditions was assessed to identify the degradation products. So, it was subjected to stress conditions like acid, base and oxidation, according to ICH guideline Q1A (R2). One degradation product formed when the drug was subjected to acid stress. Three degradation products were formed during the basic stress condition. The drug substance was found to be stable to oxidative stress. The degradants formed during the stress were separated on a C-18 column using gradient preparative HPLC elution. The only product (DP-2) formed during the acid stress and this one is same as of one of the three degradation products (DP-1, DP-2, DP-3) were formed during base stress. 1D and 2D NMR spectra and mass spectral analysis supported the proposed structures for the products. The products DP-2 and DP-3 have been reported earlier but this is the first report of product DP-1 as a degradation product of aceclofenac.

Crotosparsamide (1), a new cyclic nonapeptide, has been isolated from the n-butanol soluble sub-fraction of Croton sparsiflorus along with p-hydroxy methylcinnamate and kaempferol, which are reported for the first time from this species. Their structures were determined by chemical and spectral studies including ESIMS, and 1D and 2D NMR spectroscopic data.

ABSTRACT We investigate Abydos, the final landing site of the Philae lander after its eventful landing from the Rosetta spacecraft on comet 67P/Churyumov–Gerasimenko on 2014 November 12. Over 1000 OSIRIS-level 3B images were analysed, which cover the 2014 August–2016 September timeframe, with spatial resolution ranging from 7.6 m pixel−1 to approximately 0.06 m pixel−1. We found that the Abydos site is as dark as the global 67P nucleus and spectrally red, with an average albedo of 6.5 per cent at 649 nm and a spectral slope value of about 17 per cent/(100 nm) at 50° phase angle. Similar to the whole nucleus, the Abydos site also shows phase reddening but with lower coefficients than other regions of the comet, which may imply a thinner cover of microscopically rough regolith compared to other areas. Seasonal variations, as already noticed for the whole nucleus, were also observed. We identified some potential morphological changes near the landing site implying a total mass-loss of (4.7–7.0) × 105 kg. Small spots ranging from 0.1 to 27 m2 were observed close to Abydos before and after perihelion. Their estimated water ice abundance reaches 30–40 per cent locally, indicating fresh exposures of volatiles. Their lifetime ranges from a few hours up to three months for two pre-perihelion spots. The Abydos surroundings showed a low level of cometary activity compared to other regions of the nucleus. Only a few jets are reported originating nearby Abydos, including a bright outburst that lasted for about 1 h.

A preliminary chemical characterization of main components of ethanolic extract with dried rhizomes of Smilax domingensis Wid. that grow in Cuba was done using a GCMS-QP2010 Ultra Shimadzu and the mass spectra of the compounds found in the extract was matched with the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) library. After sample derivatization 125 chemical compounds were registered by the equipment and from them, 35 different chemical components were characterized and reported for the first time from this part of the plant in our country. The results demonstrate the developed method could be employed as a rapid and versatile analytical technique for identification of chemical constituents and quality control of Smilax domingensis.

Using the halogen effect TiAl-alloys can be protected against high-temperature oxidation. Two different fluorination methods were applied to turbine blades. The mass increase due to oxidation can be drastically reduced compared to untreated specimen. A new vacuum chamber for ion beam analysis was developed to analyze the real parts. Using PIGE-technique the F-content as a function of depth before and after oxidation was detected. Thickness and composition of the oxide scale were measured by RBS. Both ion beam methods were non destructive and thus enabled for the first time quality assurance of the halogen treatment on real components.

In this study, for the first time, a novel organic–inorganic nanobio-antimicrobial agent called “nanoflowers” (Nfs) from Camellia sinensis (L.) Kuntze extracts and its main components were produced and the increase in the antimicrobial activity of Nfs was elucidated.

ABSTRACTMetal contamination on the surface of silicon substrates before gate oxidation is known to affect gate oxide reliability. For the first time this study presents a non-destructive, analytical measurement of transition metals in an 8nm gate oxide grown by a 920 °C-10min-dry oxidation of an intentionally contaminated silicon surface. The TECHNOS TREX 610 TXRF anglescan of the gate oxide provides qualitative information on the location of the metals. The data indicate the Fe is on or in the oxide, the Cu is below the oxide, the Zn is on the oxide, and the Ni may be both in the oxide and below the oxide layer. In addition, quantitative estimates from the TXRF data indicate that all the original Fe and Cu are present, while only portions of Zn and Ni are detected after the oxidation.
