Strontium titanate (STO), the dielectric material, has caught the world’s attention due to its outstanding properties, such as high permittivity, high refractive index, and low loss in the terahertz band. Its permittivity is relevant to the environment temperature. Herein, a multifunctional meta-surface composed of a dielectric-metal hybrid antenna array has been demonstrated, which is a single-layer STO elliptic cylinder. On the one hand, when the environment temperature is 300 K, the proposed meta-surface can achieve perfect absorption and polarization conversion in the frequency range from 0.1 to 0.25 THz; particularly, the meta-surface absorptance can reach 99.97% and 99.92% at a frequency of 0.103 and 0.13 THz respectively, and while it is used as a polarization conversion device, the degree of circular polarization and the ellipticity angle can reach 0.986 and 44.5° at a frequency of 0.228 THz. On the other hand, when the environment temperature changes from 300 to 450 K, the absorption peak changes with the temperature, and the average absorptance reaches 96% at resonance frequency. The proposed meta-surface can be applied in many fields, such as optical sensing, imaging, and energy harvesting. Moreover, it provides a potential solution to research the integrated device in a complex electromagnetic environment.

A single-layer capsule-shaped polarization conversion metasurface (PCM) is proposed in this paper. In the W-band, its polarization conversion rate (PCR) exceeds 97%, effectively changing the polarization direction of the incident wave. PCM is arranged in a chessboard array to achieve broadband RCS reduction. Placing the PCM array on a circularly polarized sequentially rotated slot antenna array, simulated results show that the radiation characteristics of the antenna array are hardly affected by the PCM array. The results of measurement demonstrate that the RCS of the antenna array with PCM array proposed is reduced by more than 10 dB from 40 to 119 GHz; the relative bandwidth (−10 dB) reaches 96.3%.

This paper reports an independently tunable graphene-based metamaterial absorber (GMA) designed by etching two cascaded resonators with dissimilar sizes in the unit cell. Two perfect absorption peaks were obtained at 6.94 and 10.68 μm with simple single-layer metal-graphene metamaterials; the peaks show absorption values higher than 99%. The mechanism of absorption was analyzed theoretically. The independent tunability of the metamaterial absorber (MA) was realized by varying the Fermi level of graphene under a set of resonators. Furthermore, multi-band and wide-band absorption were observed by the proposed structure upon increasing the number of resonators and resizing them in the unit cell. The obtained results demonstrate the multipurpose performance of this type of absorber and indicate its potential application in diverse applications, such as solar energy harvesting and thermal absorbing.

Biodegradable polymers are employed in medicine and its further application is expected with eagerness. But the lack of an appropriate processing method retards the progress. To overcome this problem, we have developped a novel three-dimensional microfabrication system. The system design allows us the processing of the free three-dimensional micro-level forms by stacking up melted polymers from the nozzle. Different from the conventional method, we adopted a batch process to supply materials in order to eliminate the prior process that required toxic solvents. In addition, it is possible to handle almost all biodegradable thermoplastic resins by adopting this system. A single layer from the piled-up layers of extruded lines was observed to evaluate the resolution. The lateral and depth resolutions attained are 40 μm and 45 μm, respectively. Biodegradable polymers enable three-dimensional microstructures such as micro-pipes, micro-bends, and micro-coil springs to be manufactured in less than 15 min. The biocompatibility of the newly fabricated structure was evaluated using a cell line (PC12). For this purpose, a small vessel, with a transparent base, was fabricated using PLA and cells were cultivated in it. The results were then compared with the results obtained using the standard method. The mechanical strength of our microstructures was evaluated using a tensile strength test. The tensile strength of the microstructure was lower than the one obtained from the conventional method, but has enough strength for fabrication of medical devices. Our system renders it possible to produce toxic-free, as well as transparent and leakage-free devices. Our system is expected to have potential applications in optimum design and fabrication of implantable devices, especially in tissue engineering.

Abstract This article presents a novel miniaturized (0.105λ0 × 0.105λ0) flexible complementary frequency selective surfaces (CFSS) structure with sharp band edge selectivity and very high angular stability. To explore two diverse applications as a passband and stopband filter, a novel complementary convoluted square loop (CCSL) type structure has been designed and investigated on ultrathin dielectric material of thickness 0.0023λ0. The second-order wide controllable passband with fractional bandwidth of 19.23% (−3 dB) and remarkably wide stopband of 64.7% (−10 dB) and 54.8% (−20 dB) respectively have been achieved by using a cascaded resonating structure which is composed of asymmetrical meandered CCSL array, arranged on two ultrathin dielectric layers with air foam separation. This particular format would lead to sharp band edge selectivity with steep roll-off (72.43 dB/GHz) and an excellent passband selectivity factor (0.731). An equivalent lumped LC circuit in conjunction with the transmission line model has also been adopted to comprehend the physical mechanism of the proposed single layer and double layer structures. Further, better passband and stopband angular stability at an oblique incident angle of 45° and the bending characteristics have also been investigated thoroughly for the proposed flexible CFSS to check their employability in different conformal structures with WiMAX passband and WLAN stopband application.

Abstract Developing a highly efficient and multiple-bands metamaterial absorber is a hot issue in recent era. In this paper, A multiple-bands metamaterial absorber has been presented which is based in X, Ku and K-band. Firstly, we have designed two single layer basic unit cell of X-shape and cross-shape, then they are arranged in the multi-layers structure form for the purpose of obtaining multiple- bands and wide band absorption. The proposed absorber is able to work in multiple bands because it has six peaks in the frequency range of 8–24 GHz with having near perfect absorption. Moreover, the sixth peak has a wideband absorption which is 2.93 GHz. Furthermore, the proposed absorber is also tested for polarization insensitivity and also for oblique incidence. Absorption was found polarization insensitive with almost perfect absorption.
