A new electroactive monomer with two 2,5-di(2-thienyl)pyrrole (SNS) units and one diphenylpyrenylamine (DPPA) subunit, namely N,N-bis(4-(2,5-di(2-thienyl)-1H-pyrrol-1-yl)-phenyl)-1-aminopyrene (DPPA-2SNS), was synthesized from 1,4-di-(2-thienyl)butane-1,4-dione with N,N-di(4-aminophenyl)-1-aminopyrene through the Paal–Knorr condensation reaction. Visible and near-infrared (NIR) electrochromic polymer films could be facilely generated on the ITO-glass surface by the electrochemical polymerization of DPPA-2SNS in an electrolyte solution. The electro-synthesized polymer films exhibit multi-staged redox processes and multi-colored anodic electrochromic behavior. A multi-colored electrochromism, with yellowish orange, greyish blue, and purplish black colors, was observed in the polymer film by applying a positive potential. The polymer films exhibit reasonable coloration efficiency, fast response time, and good cycling stability, especially when switched between neutral and the first oxidation states. For comparison, N-(1-pyrenyl)-2,5-di(2-thienyl)pyrrole (Py-SNS) was also prepared and characterized with electrochemical and electro-optical properties.

Employing C3N QD-integrated single-crystal graphene, photodetectors exhibited a distinct photocurrent response at 1550 nm. The photocurrent map revealed that the fast response derive from C3N QDs that enhanced the local electric field near graphene.

A new method for fabricating conjugated polymer films was developed using electrochemical polymerization in liquid crystals and magnetic orientation. A uniaxial main chain orientation and a crosslinked network structure were achieved with this method. By employing eight types of monomers, the influence of the crosslinking for the film was investigated. The crosslinking was found to improve the solvent resistance of the conjugated polymer films. This new method is expected to be useful in various applications, such as high-powered organic electronic devices with durability.

Abstract Gas sensors with high sensitivity, wide dynamic range, high selectivity, fast response, and small footprint are desirable across a broad range of applications in energy, environment, safety, and public health. However, designing a compact gas sensor with ultra-high sensitivity and ultra-wide dynamic range remains a challenge. Laser-based photoacoustic spectroscopy (PAS) is a promising candidate to fill this gap. Herein, we report a novel method to simultaneously enhance the acoustic and light waves for PAS using integrated optical and acoustic resonators. This increases sensitivity by more than two orders of magnitude and extends the dynamic range by more than three orders of magnitude, compared with the state-of-the-art photoacoustic gas sensors. We demonstrate the concept by exploiting a near-infrared absorption line of acetylene (C2H2) at 1531.59 nm, achieving a detection limit of 0.5 parts-per-trillion (ppt), a noise equivalent absorption (NEA) of 5.7×10-13 cm-1 and a linear dynamic range of eight orders of magnitude. This study enables the realization of compact ultra-sensitive and ultra-wide-dynamic-range gas sensors in a number of different fields.

A general approach was developed to fabricate graphene/semiconducting single-wall carbon nanotube (graphene/s-SWCNT) film Schottky junctions on a large scale. The graphene/s-SWCNT film photodiodes array based on the vertically stacked Schottky junction were fabricated. The all-carbon cross-shaped structure consisted of multielement graphene/s-SWCNT Schottky photodiodes and presented a rich collection of electronics and photonics. The as-fabricated carbon-based photodiode presented an ultra-broadband photodetection characteristic with a high responsivity of 1.75 A/W at near-infrared wavelengths and a fast response rise time of 15 μs. The as-fabricated device clearly showed gate-tunable and wavelength-dependent photoelectric characteristic. Moreover, the corresponding photocurrent excitation spectrum was also demonstrated. In particular, the Si compatible and high throughput fabrication process for the devices made it conducive for large-area multielement optoelectronics devices.
