Nowadays, unsaturated polyester resins (UPR) are mainly obtained from non-renewable resources. The ever-increasing regulations and the continuous demand for more sustainability have led to extensive research towards more environmentally suitable alternatives to petroleum-based materials. However, one of the main disadvantages of bio-based UPR is their relatively high viscosity compared to petrochemical ones. In order to overcome this drawback, in this work, we investigated the possibility to lower the resin viscosity utilizing a mixture of dimethyl itaconate (DMI) and methyl methacrylate (MMA) as a reactive diluent. The effect of the DMI and MMA ratio on resin rheological properties was investigated. The optimal curing parameters were determined and all UPRs had a high gel content, which was shown to be dependent on the DMI and MMA ratio in the formulation. Furthermore, thermomechanical and mechanical properties of the resulting network were also found to be affected by the used reactive diluent mixture. A small substitution of DMI by MMA proved to be advantageous since it offers lower resin viscosity and improved mechanical properties.

Unsaturated polyester resins are extensively used in the fibre-reinforced plastic industry. The fracture toughness and impact resistance of rigid unsaturated polyester can be improved by the incorporation of elastomers by physical and chemical methods. In the physical method, two strategies are adopted. In the first, various masticated elastomers are dissolved in styrene and blended with unsaturated polyester resin. In this study, the mechanical properties of cured blends are compared with the unmodified resin and the performance of nitrile rubber is found to be far superior to all other rubbers considered. In the second approach, elastomers are modified by grafting with maleic anhydride. These maleated elastomers are then dissolved in styrene and blended with polyester resin. Maleic anhydride modified elastomers are found to improve the mechanical properties such as toughness, impact resistance and tensile strength of the cured resin to a greater extent compared to unmodified elastomers.

Epoxy and unsaturated polyester resins are the most used thermosetting polymers. They are commonly used in electronics, construction, marine, automotive and aircraft industries. Moreover, reinforcing both epoxy and unsaturated polyester resins with carbon or glass fibre in a fabric form has enabled them to be used in high-performance applications. However, their organic nature as any other polymeric materials made them highly flammable materials. Enhancing the flame retardancy performance of thermosetting polymers and their composites can be improved by the addition of flame-retardant materials, but this comes at the expense of their mechanical properties. In this regard, a comprehensive review on the recent research articles that studied the flame retardancy of epoxy resin, unsaturated polyester resin and their composites were covered. Flame retardancy performance of different flame retardant/polymer systems was evaluated in terms of Flame Retardancy index (FRI) that was calculated based on the data extracted from the cone calorimeter test. Furthermore, flame retardant selection charts that relate between the flame retardancy level with mechanical properties in the aspects of tensile and flexural strength were presented. This review paper is also dedicated to providing the reader with a brief overview on the combustion mechanism of polymeric materials, their flammability behaviour and the commonly used flammability testing techniques and the mechanism of action of flame retardants.

The vast majority of commodity polymers are acquired from petrochemical feedstock, and these resources will plausibly be depleted within the next 100 years. Therefore, the utilization of carbon-neutral renewable resources for the production of polymers is crucial in modern green chemistry. Herein, we report an eco-friendly strategy that uses enzyme catalysis to design biobased unsaturated (co)polyesters from muconic acid derivatives. This method is an attractive pathway for the production of well-defined unsaturated polyesters with minimum side reactions. A suite of characterization techniques was performed to probe the reaction mechanism and properties of the obtained polyesters. It is rationalized that the alkene functionality of the muconate monomers plays an important role in the enzyme catalysis mechanism. The rendered polyesters possessed excellent thermal stabilities and unreacted alkene functionality that can consecutively undergo chain extension, copolymerization, or act as an anchor for other functional groups. These properties open new avenues in the fields of unsaturated polyester resins and photosensitive coatings.

This paper presents the properties of the wood-resin composites. For improving their antibacterial character, silver nanoparticles were incorporated into their structures. The properties of the obtained materials were analyzed in vitro for their anti-biofilm potency in contact with aerobic Gram-positive Staphylococcus aureus and Staphylococcus epidermidis; and aerobic Gram-negative Escherichia coli and Pseudomonas aeruginosa. These pathogens are responsible for various infections, including those associated with healthcare. The effect of silver nanoparticles incorporation on mechanical and thermomechanical properties as well as gloss were investigated for the samples of composites before and after accelerating aging tests. The results show that bacteria can colonize in various wrinkles and cracks on the composites with wood flour but also the surface of the cross-linked unsaturated polyester resin. The addition of nanosilver causes the death of bacteria. It also positively influences mechanical and thermomechanical properties as well as gloss of the resin.

Abstract Polymeric materials are used in different industrial applications because they retain good environmental properties, low-cost, and easy to produce compared to conventional materials. This study investigated the effect of adding kaolin micro-filler (KF) on the mechanical properties of Luffa Fiber (LCF) reinforced polyester resin. Luffa cylindrica fiber treated with 5% NaOH, varied in weight fraction (5, 10, and 15%wt) was used to reinforce unsaturated polyester resin using hand lay-up method, whereas for the hybrid composite kaolin filler were kept constant at 6wt% fraction while the fibers varied as in the mono-reinforced composite. The samples were machined for mechanical and microstructural analysis. Analysis of the result revealed that the addition of kaolin has enhanced greatly the mechanical properties of Luffa-fibre based composites. The result reveal of the microstructure analysis, shows that there is an improvement in fiber-matrix adhesion.

In this study, composite materials were prepared using unsaturated polyester resin as binder with two types of fillers (sawdust and chopped reeds). The molding method is used to prepare sheets of UPE / sawdust composite and UPE / chopped reeds composite. The mechanical properties were studied including flexural strength and Young's modulus for the samples at normal conditions (N.C). The Commercial wood, UPE and its composite samples were immersed in water for about 30 days to find the weight gain (Mt%) of water for the samples, also to find the effect of water on their flexural strength and Young's modulus. The results showed that the samples of UPE / chopped reeds composite gained highest values of flexural strength (24.5 MPa) and Young's modulus (5.1 GPa) as compared with other composites at (N.C). The results showed that the wet samples of sawdust composite have lowest values of weight gain (Mt %) of water (0.043%) as compared with other composites after immersion. Also it’s showed a slight decrease in values of Young's modulus for all the samples after immersion as compared with the samples at (N.C). Finally it’s showed a slight decrease in values of flexural strength for all the samples except for the composite material formed from UPE / chopped reeds which showed an increase in the value of flexural strength after immersion, where the wet samples of UPE / chopped reeds composite gained (29 MPa) as compared with the samples at (N.C).

E-glass fiber mat reinforced Unsaturated Polyester Resin (UPR)-based composites were fabricated by conventional hand lay-up technique. The fiber content was varied from 5 to 50% by weight. Mechanical properties (tensile and bending) of the fabricated composites were investigated. The tensile strength (TS) of the 5% and 50% fiber reinforced composites was 32 MPa and 72 MPa, respectively. Similarly, tensile modulus, bending strength and bending modulus of the composites were increased by the increase of fiber loading. Interfacial properties of the composites were investigated by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and the results revealed that the interfacial bond between fiber and matrix was excellent.
