Intensive usage of public transportation represents a good solution to reduce traffic congestion. Dynamic allocation of vehicles enhances the service level and offers a more comfortable trip to travelers. Bluetooth (BT) has been used in some specific cases as a means of data collection regarding vehicle flow. However, it has been less employed for the anonymous detection of traveler flow, origin–destination, the density of travelers in public transport, etc. This paper analyzes the efficiency of different versions of BT for this type of application. Experiments were carried on for subway lines and stations, as well as in open space. Information regarding mobility dynamics represents an important factor to be considered in traffic management to improve the efficiency of existing systems. Conclusions and recommendations for future research are also provided.

This comparative study analyzes the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on motorized mobility in eight large cities of five Latin American countries. Public institutions and private organizations have made public data available for a better understanding of the contagion process of the pandemic, its impact, and the effectiveness of the implemented health control measures. In this research, data from the IDB Invest Dashboard were used for traffic congestion as well as data from the Moovit© public transport platform. For the daily cases of COVID-19 contagion, those published by Johns Hopkins Hospital University were used. The analysis period corresponds from 9 March to 30 September 2020, approximately seven months. For each city, a descriptive statistical analysis of the loss and subsequent recovery of motorized mobility was carried out, evaluated in terms of traffic congestion and urban transport through the corresponding regression models. The recovery of traffic congestion occurs earlier and faster than that of urban transport since the latter depends on the control measures imposed in each city. Public transportation does not appear to have been a determining factor in the spread of the pandemic in Latin American cities.

The need for an efficient public mass transportation system in the context of developing countries can well be overemphasized since a majority of the urban population continues to be either captive walkers or users of the public transport facility. In Addis Ababa, inadequacy of public transit and improper traffic management issues are dominant problems. Evidence indicates that solutions related to traffic congestion and accidents are still left behind the city. However, it is expected that the recent project interventions and initiatives will enhance the capability of the public transit to deliver effective and sustainable transportation. This chapter evaluates the public transit performance, the initiatives towards terminals, and the future models for implementation. It concludes that an integrated public mass transit system is vital to a sustainable future public transport in developing cities in general and in Addis Ababa in particular. Recommendations are forwarded in the chapter.

In facing the challenges of urban traffic congestion, when people are becoming more dependent on private vehicles, public transportation services should be functioning effectively as attractive alternative modes. This research evaluates how rail public transport users perceive day to day quality of the provided services. The study investigates commuters‟ satisfaction levels of various trip making aspects on board KTM Komuter trains, a commuter services operated by the company Keretapi Tanah Melayu Berhad (KTMB), a heavy rail operator in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. A systematic probabilistic sampling questionnaire survey was conducted among the users during the month of December 2011 until March 2012. A sample of 1000 questionnaire forms returned by respondents have been gathered for purposes of ascertaining the overall satisfaction level and analysis on selected aspects of the performance indicators. The results have shown that the majority of the respondents perceived KTM Komuter services to be below the levels that the users had expected, especially the non-adherence to published schedule and travel times, frequency or headways, capacity, the physical conditions of the rail coaches and the information on delays. Most of them expected better services to increase their satisfaction levels. Hence, it is concluded that for the rail public transportation to be sustainable and continuously relevant, the operator has to increase KTM Komuter‟s effectiveness and efficiency or the services have to in the least remain attractive to the existing users.

Currently, China’s traditional and single ground transportation system has been transformed into a multi-functional and compound multi-transportation one. However, the congestion problem in cities has become increasingly serious. Cities in different countries should take different measures to implement the accumulation pole. They also should focus on energy source consumption, environmental pollution and health care brought by traffic congestion. The practice and research countermeasures of relieving urban traffic congestion can be divided into developmental, managerial and restrictive measures. Urban traffic congestion is a systematic problem, which needs to be treated by comprehensive measures, and given priority to the use of developmental measures in order to improve urban traffic supply capacity. It is necessary to strive to enhance urban traffic management level, practice administrative measures. With historical basis, development level and fairness of urban development in China need to be taken into account, and carefully consider the use of restrictive measures.

Research and Strategy of Urban Traffic Congestion Control

Abstract Background Individual health behavior is related to environmental and social structures. To promote physical activity (PA) effectively, it is necessary to consider structural influences. Previous research has shown the relevance of the built environment. However, sex/gender differences have yet not been considered. The aim of this systematic review was to identify built environmental determinants of PA by taking sex/gender into account. Methods A systematic literature search was carried out using six electronic databases (PubMed, CINAHL, SportDiscus, PsycInfo, Scopus, Web of Knowledge) to identify studies analyzing the effect of changes in the built environment on PA, taking sex/gender into account. To be included, studies had to be based on quantitative data and a longitudinal study design. Changes in the built environment had to be objectively assessed. The methodological quality of the studies was examined using the QualSyst tool for examining risk of bias. Results In total, 36 studies published since 2000 were included in this review. The data synthesis revealed that the majority of reviewed studies found the built environment to be a determinant of PA behavior for both, males and females, in a similar way. Creating a new infrastructure for walking, cycling, and public transportation showed a positive effect on PA behavior. Findings were most consistent for the availability of public transport, which was positively associated with overall PA and walking. The improvement of walking and cycling infrastructure had no effect on the overall level of PA, but it attracted more users and had a positive effect on active transportation. In women, the availability of public transport, safe cycling lanes, housing density, and the distance to daily destinations proved to be more relevant with regard to their PA behavior. In men, street network characteristics and road environment, such as intersection connectivity, local road density, and the presence of dead-end roads, were more important determinants of PA. Conclusion This review sheds light on the relevance of the built environment on PA. By focusing on sex/gender differences, a new aspect was addressed that should be further analyzed in future research and considered by urban planners and other practitioners.

Many public transport drivers in City of Dili do not apply various regulations from the government. Located on Becora-Baidi, Becora-Bidau, and Tasi Tolu-Bidau Road. This causes congestion and traffic accidents, and impact on economy. The purpose of study is to determine the trip generation model and its factors, city transportation service performance, and how to formulate TDM concept in public transport. The survey conducted was daily volume of public transport, questionnaires, and interviews 2020. Looking for value of angkot generation with instrument test and multiple regression (IBM SPSS 22). To analyze services used parameters and Severy Index. Then, concept of Transportation Demand Management (TDM) with Guttman Scale. After analyzing, the trip generation value, Y = -1,3920 + 0,0275.X1 + 0,4958.X2 + 0,1734.X3 – 0,0601. X4 - 0,0657.X5 - 0,0001.X6 - 0,0193.X7 - 0,7670.X8 + 0,8801.X9 + 0,6721.X10 + 0,1058.X11, positive value is factor that most influences the respondent's decision to trips using public transportation: gender (X1), age (X2), job (X3), duration of trip (X9), number of passengers (X10), and waiting time for public transportation (X11). However, in service level is still “low” category. Then, for TDM concept gets 87% in 51%-99% range. Means that angkot users agree, if TDM concept is propose to the government of Dili City, and public transportation will be better in the future.
