With the advantage of high maneuverability, Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) have been widely deployed in vehicle monitoring and controlling. However, processing the images captured by UAV for the extracting vehicle information is hindered by some challenges including arbitrary orientations, huge scale variations and partial occlusion. In seeking to address these challenges, we propose a novel Multi-Scale and Occlusion Aware Network (MSOA-Net) for UAV based vehicle segmentation, which consists of two parts including a Multi-Scale Feature Adaptive Fusion Network (MSFAF-Net) and a Regional Attention based Triple Head Network (RATH-Net). In MSFAF-Net, a self-adaptive feature fusion module is proposed, which can adaptively aggregate hierarchical feature maps from multiple levels to help Feature Pyramid Network (FPN) deal with the scale change of vehicles. The RATH-Net with a self-attention mechanism is proposed to guide the location-sensitive sub-networks to enhance the vehicle of interest and suppress background noise caused by occlusions. In this study, we release a large comprehensive UAV based vehicle segmentation dataset (UVSD), which is the first public dataset for UAV based vehicle detection and segmentation. Experiments are conducted on the challenging UVSD dataset. Experimental results show that the proposed method is efficient in detecting and segmenting vehicles, and outperforms the compared state-of-the-art works.

With the rapid advances in remote-sensing technologies and the larger number of satellite images, fast and effective object detection plays an important role in understanding and analyzing image information, which could be further applied to civilian and military fields. Recently object detection methods with region-based convolutional neural network have shown excellent performance. However, these two-stage methods contain region proposal generation and object detection procedures, resulting in low computation speed. Because of the expensive manual costs, the quantity of well-annotated aerial images is scarce, which also limits the progress of geospatial object detection in remote sensing. In this paper, on the one hand, we construct and release a large-scale remote-sensing dataset for geospatial object detection (RSD-GOD) that consists of 5 different categories with 18,187 annotated images and 40,990 instances. On the other hand, we design a single shot detection framework with multi-scale feature fusion. The feature maps from different layers are fused together through the up-sampling and concatenation blocks to predict the detection results. High-level features with semantic information and low-level features with fine details are fully explored for detection tasks, especially for small objects. Meanwhile, a soft non-maximum suppression strategy is put into practice to select the final detection results. Extensive experiments have been conducted on two datasets to evaluate the designed network. Results show that the proposed approach achieves a good detection performance and obtains the mean average precision value of 89.0% on a newly constructed RSD-GOD dataset and 83.8% on the Northwestern Polytechnical University very high spatial resolution-10 (NWPU VHR-10) dataset at 18 frames per second (FPS) on a NVIDIA GTX-1080Ti GPU.

Insulator detection is an essential task for the safety and reliable operation of intelligent grids. Owing to insulator images including various background interferences, most traditional image-processing methods cannot achieve good performance. Some You Only Look Once (YOLO) networks are employed to meet the requirements of actual applications for insulator detection. To achieve a good trade-off among accuracy, running time, and memory storage, this work proposes the modified YOLO-tiny for insulator (MTI-YOLO) network for insulator detection in complex aerial images. First of all, composite insulator images are collected in common scenes and the “CCIN_detection” (Chinese Composite INsulator) dataset is constructed. Secondly, to improve the detection accuracy of different sizes of insulator, multi-scale feature detection headers, a structure of multi-scale feature fusion, and the spatial pyramid pooling (SPP) model are adopted to the MTI-YOLO network. Finally, the proposed MTI-YOLO network and the compared networks are trained and tested on the “CCIN_detection” dataset. The average precision (AP) of our proposed network is 17% and 9% higher than YOLO-tiny and YOLO-v2. Compared with YOLO-tiny and YOLO-v2, the running time of the proposed network is slightly higher. Furthermore, the memory usage of the proposed network is 25.6% and 38.9% lower than YOLO-v2 and YOLO-v3, respectively. Experimental results and analysis validate that the proposed network achieves good performance in both complex backgrounds and bright illumination conditions.

The classification of high-resolution (HR) synthetic aperture radar (SAR) images is of great importance for SAR scene interpretation and application. However, the presence of intricate spatial structural patterns and complex statistical nature makes SAR image classification a challenging task, especially in the case of limited labeled SAR data. This paper proposes a novel HR SAR image classification method, using a multi-scale deep feature fusion network and covariance pooling manifold network (MFFN-CPMN). MFFN-CPMN combines the advantages of local spatial features and global statistical properties and considers the multi-feature information fusion of SAR images in representation learning. First, we propose a Gabor-filtering-based multi-scale feature fusion network (MFFN) to capture the spatial pattern and get the discriminative features of SAR images. The MFFN belongs to a deep convolutional neural network (CNN). To make full use of a large amount of unlabeled data, the weights of each layer of MFFN are optimized by unsupervised denoising dual-sparse encoder. Moreover, the feature fusion strategy in MFFN can effectively exploit the complementary information between different levels and different scales. Second, we utilize a covariance pooling manifold network to extract further the global second-order statistics of SAR images over the fusional feature maps. Finally, the obtained covariance descriptor is more distinct for various land covers. Experimental results on four HR SAR images demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method and achieve promising results over other related algorithms.

Multi-scale object detection is a basic challenge in computer vision. Although many advanced methods based on convolutional neural networks have succeeded in natural images, the progress in aerial images has been relatively slow mainly due to the considerably huge scale variations of objects and many densely distributed small objects. In this paper, considering that the semantic information of the small objects may be weakened or even disappear in the deeper layers of neural network, we propose a new detection framework called Extended Feature Pyramid Network (EFPN) for strengthening the information extraction ability of the neural network. In the EFPN, we first design the multi-branched dilated bottleneck (MBDB) module in the lateral connections to capture much more semantic information. Then, we further devise an attention pathway for better locating the objects. Finally, an augmented bottom-up pathway is conducted for making shallow layer information easier to spread and further improving performance. Moreover, we present an adaptive scale training strategy to enable the network to better recognize multi-scale objects. Meanwhile, we present a novel clustering method to achieve adaptive anchors and make the neural network better learn data features. Experiments on the public aerial datasets indicate that the presented method obtain state-of-the-art performance.

With the rapid development of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles, vehicle detection in aerial images plays an important role in different applications. Comparing with general object detection problems, vehicle detection in aerial images is still a challenging research topic since it is plagued by various unique factors, e.g. different camera angle, small vehicle size and complex background. In this paper, a Feature Fusion Deep-Projection Convolution Neural Network is proposed to enhance the ability to detect small vehicles in aerial images. The backbone of the proposed framework utilizes a novel residual block named stepwise res-block to explore high-level semantic features as well as conserve low-level detail features at the same time. A specially designed feature fusion module is adopted in the proposed framework to further balance the features obtained from different levels of the backbone. A deep-projection deconvolution module is used to minimize the impact of the information contamination introduced by down-sampling/up-sampling processes. The proposed framework has been evaluated by UCAS-AOD, VEDAI, and DOTA datasets. According to the evaluation results, the proposed framework outperforms other state-of-the-art vehicle detection algorithms for aerial images.

Object detection in very high-resolution (VHR) aerial images is an essential step for a wide range of applications such as military applications, urban planning, and environmental management. Still, it is a challenging task due to the different scales and appearances of the objects. On the other hand, object detection task in VHR aerial images has improved remarkably in recent years due to the achieved advances in convolution neural networks (CNN). Most of the proposed methods depend on a two-stage approach, namely: a region proposal stage and a classification stage such as Faster R-CNN. Even though two-stage approaches outperform the traditional methods, their optimization is not easy and they are not suitable for real-time applications. In this paper, a uniform one-stage model for object detection in VHR aerial images has been proposed. In order to tackle the challenge of different scales, a densely connected feature pyramid network has been proposed by which high-level multi-scale semantic feature maps with high-quality information are prepared for object detection. This work has been evaluated on two publicly available datasets and outperformed the current state-of-the-art results on both in terms of mean average precision (mAP) and computation time.

Fabric defect detection is very important in the textile quality process. Current deep learning algorithms are not effective in detecting tiny and extreme aspect ratio fabric defects. In this paper, we proposed a strong detection method, Priori Anchor Convolutional Neural Network (PRAN-Net), for fabric defect detection to improve the detection and location accuracy of fabric defects and decrease the inspection time. First, we used Feature Pyramid Network (FPN) by selected multi-scale feature maps to reserve more detailed information of tiny defects. Secondly, we proposed a trick to generate sparse priori anchors based on fabric defects ground truth boxes instead of fixed anchors to locate extreme defects more accurately and efficiently. Finally, a classification network is used to classify and refine the position of the fabric defects. The method was validated on two self-made fabric datasets. Experimental results indicate that our method significantly improved the accuracy and efficiency of detecting fabric defects and is more suitable to the automatic fabric defect detection.

Neural network models have been widely used in the field of object detecting. The region proposal methods are widely used in the current object detection networks and have achieved well performance. The common region proposal methods hunt the objects by generating thousands of the candidate boxes. Compared to other region proposal methods, the region proposal network (RPN) method improves the accuracy and detection speed with several hundred candidate boxes. However, since the feature maps contains insufficient information, the ability of RPN to detect and locate small-sized objects is poor. A novel multi-scale feature fusion method for region proposal network to solve the above problems is proposed in this article. The proposed method is called multi-scale region proposal network (MS-RPN) which can generate suitable feature maps for the region proposal network. In MS-RPN, the selected feature maps at multiple scales are fine turned respectively and compressed into a uniform space. The generated fusion feature maps are called refined fusion features (RFFs). RFFs incorporate abundant detail information and context information. And RFFs are sent to RPN to generate better region proposals. The proposed approach is evaluated on PASCAL VOC 2007 and MS COCO benchmark tasks. MS-RPN obtains significant improvements over the comparable state-of-the-art detection models.

Although deep learning has achieved great success in aircraft detection from SAR imagery, its blackbox behavior has been criticized for low comprehensibility and interpretability. Such challenges have impeded the trustworthiness and wide application of deep learning techniques in SAR image analytics. In this paper, we propose an innovative eXplainable Artificial Intelligence (XAI) framework to glassbox deep neural networks (DNN) by using aircraft detection as a case study. This framework is composed of three parts: hybrid global attribution mapping (HGAM) for backbone network selection, path aggregation network (PANet), and class-specific confidence scores mapping (CCSM) for visualization of the detector. HGAM integrates the local and global XAI techniques to evaluate the effectiveness of DNN feature extraction; PANet provides advanced feature fusion to generate multi-scale prediction feature maps; while CCSM relies on visualization methods to examine the detection performance with given DNN and input SAR images. This framework can select the optimal backbone DNN for aircraft detection and map the detection performance for better understanding of the DNN. We verify its effectiveness with experiments using Gaofen-3 imagery. Our XAI framework offers an explainable approach to design, develop, and deploy DNN for SAR image analytics.

With the rapid development of deep learning and the wide usage of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs), CNN-based algorithms of vehicle detection in aerial images have been widely studied in the past several years. As a downstream task of the general object detection, there are some differences between the vehicle detection in aerial images and the general object detection in ground view images, e.g., larger image areas, smaller target sizes, and more complex background. In this paper, to improve the performance of this task, a Dense Attentional Residual Network (DAR-Net) is proposed. The proposed network employs a novel dense waterfall residual block (DW res-block) to effectively preserve the spatial information and extract high-level semantic information at the same time. A multiscale receptive field attention (MRFA) module is also designed to select the informative feature from the feature maps and enhance the ability of multiscale perception. Based on the DW res-block and MRFA module, to protect the spatial information, the proposed framework adopts a new backbone that only downsamples the feature map 3 times; i.e., the total downsampling ratio of the proposed backbone is 8. These designs could alleviate the degradation problem, improve the information flow, and strengthen the feature reuse. In addition, deep-projection units are used to reduce the impact of information loss caused by downsampling operations, and the identity mapping is applied to each stage of the proposed backbone to further improve the information flow. The proposed DAR-Net is evaluated on VEDAI, UCAS-AOD, and DOTA datasets. The experimental results demonstrate that the proposed framework outperforms other state-of-the-art algorithms.
