Accurate land use and cover data are essential for effective land-use planning, hydrological modeling, and policy development. Since the Okavango Delta is a transboundary Ramsar site, managing natural resources within the Okavango Basin is undoubtedly a complex issue. It is often difficult to accurately map land use and cover using remote sensing in heterogeneous landscapes. This study investigates the combined value of climate-based regionalization and integration of spectral bands with spectral indices to enhance the accuracy of multi-temporal land use/cover classification using deep learning and machine learning approaches. Two experiments were set up, the first entailing the integration of spectral bands with spectral indices and the second involving the combined integration of spectral indices and climate-based regionalization based on Koppen–Geiger climate zones. Landsat 5 TM and Landsat 8 OLI images, machine learning classifiers (random forest and extreme gradient boosting), and deep learning (neural network and deep neural network) classifiers were used in this study. Supervised classification using a total of 5140 samples was conducted for the years 1996, 2004, 2013, and 2020. Average overall accuracy and Kappa coefficients were used to validate the results. The study found that the integration of spectral bands with indices improves the accuracy of land use/cover classification using machine learning and deep learning. Post-feature selection combinations yield higher accuracies in comparison to combinations of bands and indices. A combined integration of spectral indices with bands and climate-based regionalization did not significantly improve the accuracy of land use/cover classification consistently for all the classifiers (p < 0.05). However, post-feature selection combinations and climate-based regionalization significantly improved the accuracy for all classifiers investigated in this study. Findings of this study will improve the reliability of land use/cover monitoring in complex heterogeneous TDBs.

Hypotensive events in the initial stage of anesthesia can cause serious complications in the patients after surgery, which could be fatal. In this study, we intended to predict hypotension after tracheal intubation using machine learning and deep learning techniques after intubation one minute in advance. Meta learning models, such as random forest, extreme gradient boosting (Xgboost), and deep learning models, especially the convolutional neural network (CNN) model and the deep neural network (DNN), were trained to predict hypotension occurring between tracheal intubation and incision, using data from four minutes to one minute before tracheal intubation. Vital records and electronic health records (EHR) for 282 of 319 patients who underwent laparoscopic cholecystectomy from October 2018 to July 2019 were collected. Among the 282 patients, 151 developed post-induction hypotension. Our experiments had two scenarios: using raw vital records and feature engineering on vital records. The experiments on raw data showed that CNN had the best accuracy of 72.63%, followed by random forest (70.32%) and Xgboost (64.6%). The experiments on feature engineering showed that random forest combined with feature selection had the best accuracy of 74.89%, while CNN had a lower accuracy of 68.95% than that of the experiment on raw data. Our study is an extension of previous studies to detect hypotension before intubation with a one-minute advance. To improve accuracy, we built a model using state-of-art algorithms. We found that CNN had a good performance, but that random forest had a better performance when combined with feature selection. In addition, we found that the examination period (data period) is also important.

This chapter uses deep learning neural networks for processing of aerospace system multispectral images. Convolutional and Capsule Neural Network were used for processing multispectral images from satellite Landsat 8, previously processed using spectral indices NDVI, NDWI, PSRI. The authors' approach was applied to wildfire Camp Fire (California, USA). The deep learning neural networks are used to solve the problem of detecting fire hazardous forest areas. Comparison of Convolutional and Capsule Neural Network results was done. The theory of neural networks of deep learning, the theory of recognition of multispectral images, methods of mathematical statistics were used.

<p>An ensemble model has been proposed in this work by combining the extreme gradient boosting classification (XGBoost) model with support vector machine (SVM) for land use and land cover classification (LULCC). We have used the multispectral Landsat-8 operational land imager sensor (OLI) data with six spectral bands in the electromagnetic spectrum (EM). The area of study is the administrative boundary of the twin cities of Odisha. Data collected in 2020 is classified into seven land use classes/labels: river, canal, pond, forest, urban, agricultural land, and sand. Comparative assessments of the results of ten machine learning models are accomplished by computing the overall accuracy, kappa coefficient, producer accuracy and user accuracy. An ensemble classifier model makes the classification more precise than the other state-of-the-art machine learning classifiers.</p>

Major League Baseball (MLB) is the highest level of professional baseball in the world and accounts for some of the most popular international sporting events. Many scholars have conducted research on predicting the outcome of MLB matches. The accuracy in predicting the results of baseball games is low. Therefore, deep learning and machine learning methods were used to build models for predicting the outcomes (win/loss) of MLB matches and investigate the differences between the models in terms of their performance. The match data of 30 teams during the 2019 MLB season with only the starting pitcher or with all pitchers in the pitcher category were collected to compare the prediction accuracy. A one-dimensional convolutional neural network (1DCNN), a traditional machine learning artificial neural network (ANN), and a support vector machine (SVM) were used to predict match outcomes with fivefold cross-validation to evaluate model performance. The highest prediction accuracies were 93.4%, 93.91%, and 93.90% with the 1DCNN, ANN, SVM models, respectively, before feature selection; after feature selection, the highest accuracies obtained were 94.18% and 94.16% with the ANN and SVM models, respectively. The prediction results obtained with the three models were similar, and the prediction accuracies were much higher than those obtained in related studies. Moreover, a 1DCNN was used for the first time for predicting the outcome of MLB matches, and it achieved a prediction accuracy similar to that achieved by machine learning methods.

Abstract This paper introduces a study on the classification of aortic stenosis (AS) based on cardio-mechanical signals collected using non-invasive wearable inertial sensors. Measurements were taken from 21 AS patients and 13 non-AS subjects. A feature analysis framework utilizing Elastic Net was implemented to reduce the features generated by continuous wavelet transform (CWT). Performance comparisons were conducted among several machine learning (ML) algorithms, including decision tree, random forest, multi-layer perceptron neural network, and extreme gradient boosting. In addition, a two-dimensional convolutional neural network (2D-CNN) was developed using the CWT coefficients as images. The 2D-CNN was made with a custom-built architecture and a CNN based on Mobile Net via transfer learning. After the reduction of features by 95.47%, the results obtained report 0.87 on accuracy by decision tree, 0.96 by random forest, 0.91 by simple neural network, and 0.95 by XGBoost. Via the 2D-CNN framework, the transfer learning of Mobile Net shows an accuracy of 0.91, while the custom-constructed classifier reveals an accuracy of 0.89. Our results validate the effectiveness of the feature selection and classification framework. They also show a promising potential for the implementation of deep learning tools on the classification of AS.

Various techniques have been developed to detect railway defects. One of the popular techniques is machine learning. This unprecedented study applies deep learning, which is a branch of machine learning techniques, to detect and evaluate the severity of rail combined defects. The combined defects in the study are settlement and dipped joint. Features used to detect and evaluate the severity of combined defects are axle box accelerations simulated using a verified rolling stock dynamic behavior simulation called D-Track. A total of 1650 simulations are run to generate numerical data. Deep learning techniques used in the study are deep neural network (DNN), convolutional neural network (CNN), and recurrent neural network (RNN). Simulated data are used in two ways: simplified data and raw data. Simplified data are used to develop the DNN model, while raw data are used to develop the CNN and RNN model. For simplified data, features are extracted from raw data, which are the weight of rolling stock, the speed of rolling stock, and three peak and bottom accelerations from two wheels of rolling stock. In total, there are 14 features used as simplified data for developing the DNN model. For raw data, time-domain accelerations are used directly to develop the CNN and RNN models without processing and data extraction. Hyperparameter tuning is performed to ensure that the performance of each model is optimized. Grid search is used for performing hyperparameter tuning. To detect the combined defects, the study proposes two approaches. The first approach uses one model to detect settlement and dipped joint, and the second approach uses two models to detect settlement and dipped joint separately. The results show that the CNN models of both approaches provide the same accuracy of 99%, so one model is good enough to detect settlement and dipped joint. To evaluate the severity of the combined defects, the study applies classification and regression concepts. Classification is used to evaluate the severity by categorizing defects into light, medium, and severe classes, and regression is used to estimate the size of defects. From the study, the CNN model is suitable for evaluating dipped joint severity with an accuracy of 84% and mean absolute error (MAE) of 1.25 mm, and the RNN model is suitable for evaluating settlement severity with an accuracy of 99% and mean absolute error (MAE) of 1.58 mm.

Malware is one of the most significant threats in today’s computing world since the number of websites distributing malware is increasing at a rapid rate. Malware analysis and prevention methods are increasingly becoming necessary for computer systems connected to the Internet. This software exploits the system’s vulnerabilities to steal valuable information without the user’s knowledge, and stealthily send it to remote servers controlled by attackers. Traditionally, anti-malware products use signatures for detecting known malware. However, the signature-based method does not scale in detecting obfuscated and packed malware. Considering that the cause of a problem is often best understood by studying the structural aspects of a program like the mnemonics, instruction opcode, API Call, etc. In this paper, we investigate the relevance of the features of unpacked malicious and benign executables like mnemonics, instruction opcodes, and API to identify a feature that classifies the executable. Prominent features are extracted using Minimum Redundancy and Maximum Relevance (mRMR) and Analysis of Variance (ANOVA). Experiments were conducted on four datasets using machine learning and deep learning approaches such as Support Vector Machine (SVM), Naïve Bayes, J48, Random Forest (RF), and XGBoost. In addition, we also evaluate the performance of the collection of deep neural networks like Deep Dense network, One-Dimensional Convolutional Neural Network (1D-CNN), and CNN-LSTM in classifying unknown samples, and we observed promising results using APIs and system calls. On combining APIs/system calls with static features, a marginal performance improvement was attained comparing models trained only on dynamic features. Moreover, to improve accuracy, we implemented our solution using distinct deep learning methods and demonstrated a fine-tuned deep neural network that resulted in an F1-score of 99.1% and 98.48% on Dataset-2 and Dataset-3, respectively.

The use of satellite image time series analysis and machine learning methods brings new opportunities and challenges for land use and cover changes (LUCC) mapping over large areas. One of these challenges is the need for samples that properly represent the high variability of land used and cover classes over large areas to train supervised machine learning methods and to produce accurate LUCC maps. This paper addresses this challenge and presents a method to identify spatiotemporal patterns in land use and cover samples to infer subclasses through the phenological and spectral information provided by satellite image time series. The proposed method uses self-organizing maps (SOMs) to reduce the data dimensionality creating primary clusters. From these primary clusters, it uses hierarchical clustering to create subclusters that recognize intra-class variability intrinsic to different regions and periods, mainly in large areas and multiple years. To show how the method works, we use MODIS image time series associated to samples of cropland and pasture classes over the Cerrado biome in Brazil. The results prove that the proposed method is suitable for identifying spatiotemporal patterns in land use and cover samples that can be used to infer subclasses, mainly for crop-types.

The use of image processing tools, machine learning, and deep learning approaches has become very useful and robust in recent years. This paper introduces the detection of the Nosema disease, which is considered to be one of the most economically significant diseases today. This work shows a solution for recognizing and identifying Nosema cells between the other existing objects in the microscopic image. Two main strategies are examined. The first strategy uses image processing tools to extract the most valuable information and features from the dataset of microscopic images. Then, machine learning methods are applied, such as a neural network (ANN) and support vector machine (SVM) for detecting and classifying the Nosema disease cells. The second strategy explores deep learning and transfers learning. Several approaches were examined, including a convolutional neural network (CNN) classifier and several methods of transfer learning (AlexNet, VGG-16 and VGG-19), which were fine-tuned and applied to the object sub-images in order to identify the Nosema images from the other object images. The best accuracy was reached by the VGG-16 pre-trained neural network with 96.25%.

Non-invasive, electroencephalography (EEG)-based brain-computer interfaces (BCIs) on motor imagery movements translate the subject’s motor intention into control signals through classifying the EEG patterns caused by different imagination tasks, e.g., hand movements. This type of BCI has been widely studied and used as an alternative mode of communication and environmental control for disabled patients, such as those suffering from a brainstem stroke or a spinal cord injury (SCI). Notwithstanding the success of traditional machine learning methods in classifying EEG signals, these methods still rely on hand-crafted features. The extraction of such features is a difficult task due to the high non-stationarity of EEG signals, which is a major cause by the stagnating progress in classification performance. Remarkable advances in deep learning methods allow end-to-end learning without any feature engineering, which could benefit BCI motor imagery applications. We developed three deep learning models: (1) A long short-term memory (LSTM); (2) a spectrogram-based convolutional neural network model (CNN); and (3) a recurrent convolutional neural network (RCNN), for decoding motor imagery movements directly from raw EEG signals without (any manual) feature engineering. Results were evaluated on our own publicly available, EEG data collected from 20 subjects and on an existing dataset known as 2b EEG dataset from “BCI Competition IV”. Overall, better classification performance was achieved with deep learning models compared to state-of-the art machine learning techniques, which could chart a route ahead for developing new robust techniques for EEG signal decoding. We underpin this point by demonstrating the successful real-time control of a robotic arm using our CNN based BCI.
