Aerosols in the atmosphere play an essential role in the radiative transfer process due to their scattering, absorption, and emission. Moreover, they interrupt the retrieval of atmospheric properties from ground-based and satellite remote sensing. Thus, accurate aerosol information needs to be obtained. Herein, we developed an optimal-estimation-based aerosol optical depth (AOD) retrieval algorithm using the hyperspectral infrared downwelling emitted radiance of the Atmospheric Emitted Radiance Interferometer (AERI). The proposed algorithm is based on the phenomena that the thermal infrared radiance measured by a ground-based remote sensor is sensitive to the thermodynamic profile and degree of the turbid aerosol in the atmosphere. To assess the performance of algorithm, AERI observations, measured throughout the day on 21 October 2010 at Anmyeon, South Korea, were used. The derived thermodynamic profiles and AODs were compared with those of the European center for a reanalysis of medium-range weather forecasts version 5 and global atmosphere watch precision-filter radiometer (GAW-PFR), respectively. The radiances simulated with aerosol information were more suitable for the AERI-observed radiance than those without aerosol (i.e., clear sky). The temporal variation trend of the retrieved AOD matched that of GAW-PFR well, although small discrepancies were present at high aerosol concentrations. This provides a potential possibility for the retrieval of nighttime AOD.

Abstract Two independent ground-based passive remote sensing methods are used to retrieve lower-tropospheric temperature and humidity profiles in clear-sky cases. A simulation study for two distinctly different climatic zones is performed to evaluate the accuracies of a standard microwave profiler [humidity and temperature profiler (HATPRO)] and an infrared spectrometer [Atmospheric Emitted Radiance Interferometer (AERI)] by applying a unified optimal estimation scheme to each instrument. Different measurement modes for each instrument are also evaluated in which the retrieval uses different spectral channels and observational view angles. In addition, both instruments have been combined into the same physically consistent retrieval scheme to evaluate the differences between a combined retrieval relative to the single-instrument retrievals. In general, retrievals derived from only infrared measurements yield superior RMS error and bias to retrievals derived only from microwave measurements. The AERI retrievals show high potential, especially for retrieving humidity in the boundary layer, where accuracies are on the order of 0.25–0.5 g m−3 for a central European climate. In the lowest 500 m the retrieval accuracies for temperature from elevation-scanning microwave measurements and spectral infrared measurements are very similar (0.2–0.6 K). Above this level the accuracies of the AERI retrieval are significantly more accurate (<1 K RMSE below 4 km). The inclusion of microwave measurements to the spectral infrared measurements within a unified physical retrieval scheme only results in improvements in the high-humidity tropical climate. However, relative to the HATPRO retrieval, the accuracy of the AERI retrieval is more sensitive to changes in the measurement uncertainty. The discussed results are drawn from a subset of “pristine” clear-sky cases: in the general case in which clouds and aerosols are present, the combined HATPRO–AERI retrieval algorithm is expected to yield much more beneficial results.

<p>Previous work by this team has demonstrated that assimilation of IR radiances in partially cloudy regions is beneficial to numerical weather predictions (NWPs), improving the representation of tropical cyclones (TCs) in global analyses and forecasts. The specific technique used by this team is based on the “cloud-clearing CC” methodology. Cloud-cleared hyperspectral IR radiances (CCRs), if thinned more aggressively than clear-sky radiances, have shown a strong impact on the analyzed representation and structure of TCs. However, the use of CCRs in an operational context is limited by 1) latency; and 2) external dependencies present in the original cloud-clearing algorithm. In this study, the Atmospheric InfraRed Sounder (AIRS) CC algorithm was (a) ported to NASA high end computing resources (HEC), (b) deprived of external dependencies, and (c) parallelized improving the processing by a factor of 70. The revised AIRS CC algorithm is now customizable, allowing user’s choice of channel selection, user’s model's fields as first guess, and could perform in real time. This study examines the benefits achieved when assimilating CCRs using the NASA’s Goddard Earth Observing System (GEOS) hybrid 4DEnVar system. The focus is on the 2017 Atlantic hurricane season with three infamous hurricanes (Harvey, Irma, and Maria) investigated in depth.  The impact of assimilating customized CCRs on the analyzed representation of tropical cyclone horizontal and vertical structure and on forecast skill is discussed.</p>

<p>Part of the space segment of EU’s Copernicus Earth Observation programme, the Sentinel-5 Precursor (S5P) mission is dedicated to global and European atmospheric composition measurements of air quality, climate and the stratospheric ozone layer. On board of the S5P early afternoon polar satellite, the imaging spectrometer TROPOMI (TROPOspheric Monitoring Instrument) performs nadir measurements of the Earth radiance within the UV-visible and near-infrared spectral ranges, from which atmospheric ozone profile data are retrieved. Developed at the Royal Netherlands Meteorological Institute (KNMI) and based on the optimal estimation method, TROPOMI’s operational ozone profile retrieval algorithm has recently been upgraded. With respect to early retrieval attempts, accuracy is expected to have improved significantly, also thanks to recent updates of the TROPOMI Level-1b data product. This work reports on the initial validation of the improved TROPOMI height-resolved ozone data in the troposphere and stratosphere, as collected both from the operational S5P Mission Performance Centre/Validation Data Analysis Facility (MPC/VDAF) and from the S5PVT scientific project CHEOPS-5p. Based on the same validation best practices as developed for and applied to heritage sensors like GOME-2, OMI and IASI (Keppens et al., 2015, 2018), the validation methodology relies on the analysis of data retrieval diagnostics – like the averaging kernels’ information content – and on comparisons of TROPOMI data with reference ozone profile measurements. The latter are acquired by ozonesonde, stratospheric lidar, and tropospheric lidar stations performing network operation in the context of WMO's Global Atmosphere Watch and its contributing networks NDACC and SHADOZ. The dependence of TROPOMI’s ozone profile uncertainty on several influence quantities like cloud fraction and measurement parameters like sun and scan angles is examined and discussed. This work concludes with a set of quality indicators, enabling users to verify the fitness-for-purpose of the S5P data.</p>

The goal of phase retrieval is to recover an unknown signal from the random measurements consisting of the magnitude of its Fourier transform. Due to the loss of the phase information, phase retrieval is considered as an ill-posed problem. Conventional greedy algorithms, e.g., greedy spare phase retrieval (GESPAR), were developed to solve this problem by using prior knowledge of the unknown signal. However, due to the defect of the Gauss–Newton method in the local convergence problem, especially when the residual is large, it is very difficult to use this method in GESPAR to efficiently solve the non-convex optimization problem. In order to improve the performance of the greedy algorithm, we propose an improved phase retrieval algorithm, which is called the greedy autocorrelation retrieval Levenberg–Marquardt (GARLM) algorithm. Specifically, the proposed GARLM algorithm is a local search iterative algorithm to recover the sparse signal from its Fourier transform magnitude. The proposed algorithm is preferred to existing greedy methods of phase retrieval, since at each iteration the problem of minimizing the objective function over a given support is solved by using the improved Levenberg–Marquardt (ILM) method and matrix transform. A local search procedure such as the 2-opt method is then invoked to get the optimal estimation. Simulation results are given to show that the proposed algorithm performs better than the conventional GESPAR algorithm.

AbstractAn accurate land surface emissivity (LSE) is critical for the retrieval of atmospheric temperature and moisture profiles along with land surface temperature from hyperspectral infrared (IR) sounder radiances; it is also critical to assimilating IR radiances in numerical weather prediction models over land. To investigate the impact of different LSE datasets on Atmospheric Infrared Sounder (AIRS) sounding retrievals, experiments are conducted by using a one-dimensional variational (1DVAR) retrieval algorithm. Sounding retrievals using constant LSE, the LSE dataset from the Infrared Atmospheric Sounding Interferometer (IASI), and the baseline fit dataset from the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) are performed. AIRS observations over northern Africa on 1–7 January and 1–7 July 2007 are used in the experiments. From the limited regional comparisons presented here, it is revealed that the LSE from the IASI obtained the best agreement between the retrieval results and the ECMWF reanalysis, whereas the constant LSE gets the worst results when the emissivities are fixed in the retrieval process. The results also confirm that the simultaneous retrieval of atmospheric profile and surface parameters could reduce the dependence of soundings on the LSE choice and finally improve sounding accuracy when the emissivities are adjusted in the iterative retrieval. In addition, emissivity angle dependence is investigated with AIRS radiance measurements. The retrieved emissivity spectra from AIRS over the ocean reveal weak angle dependence, which is consistent with that from an ocean emissivity model. This result demonstrates the reliability of the 1DVAR simultaneous algorithm for emissivity retrieval from hyperspectral IR radiance measurements.

Abstract The authors present a new algorithm to retrieve aerosol optical depth (AOD) over a desert using the window channels centered at 8.7, 10.8, and 12.0 μm of the Spinning Enhanced Visible and Infrared Imager (SEVIRI) instrument on board the Meteosat Second Generation satellite. The presence of dust aerosols impacts the longwave outgoing radiation, allowing the aerosols over the desert surfaces to be detected in the thermal infrared (IR) wavelengths. To retrieve the aerosol properties over land, the surface contribution to the satellite radiance measured at the top of the atmosphere has to be taken into account. The surface radiation depends on the surface temperature, which is characterized by a strong diurnal variation over the desert, and the surface emissivity, which is assumed to be constant over a time span of 24 h. The surface emissivity is based on clear-sky observations that are corrected for atmospheric absorption and emission. The clear-sky image is a composite of pixels that is characterized by the highest brightness temperature (BT) of the SEVIRI channel at 10.8 μm, and by a negative BT difference between the channels at 8.7 and 10.8 μm. Because of the lower temperatures of clouds and aerosols compared to clear-sky conditions, the authors assume that the selected pixel values are obtained for a clear-sky day. A forward model is used to simulate the thermal IR radiation transfer in the dust layer. The apparent surface radiation for the three window channels in the presence of aerosols is calculated as a function of the surface emissivity and the surface temperature, the aerosol layer temperature, and the AOD for different aerosol loadings. From these simulations two emissivity ratios, which are stored in lookup tables (LUT), are calculated. The retrieval algorithm consists of processing the clear-sky image and computing the surface emissivity, processing the instantaneous image, and computing the apparent surface radiation for the three window channels. The two emissivity ratios are computed using the radiances at 8.7 and 10.8 μm and at 8.7 and 12.0 μm, respectively. The SEVIRI AOD is obtained by the inversion of these emissivity ratios using the corresponding LUT. The algorithm is applied to a minor dust event over the Sahara between 19 and 22 June 2007. For the validation the SEVIRI AOD is compared with the AOD from the Cloud Aerosol Lidar and Infrared Pathfinder Satellite Observations (CALIPSO) along the satellite track.

Abstract. We present a new method for retrieving temperature from pure rotational Raman (PRR) lidar measurements. Our optimal estimation method (OEM) used in this study uses the full physics of PRR scattering and does not require any assumption of the form for a calibration function nor does it require fitting of calibration factors over a large range of temperatures. The only calibration required is the estimation of the ratio of the lidar constants of the two PRR channels (coupling constant) that can be evaluated at a single or multiple height bins using a simple analytic expression. The uncertainty budget of our OEM retrieval includes both statistical and systematic uncertainties, including the uncertainty in the determination of the coupling constant on the temperature. We show that the error due to calibration can be reduced significantly using our method, in particular in the upper troposphere when calibration is only possible over a limited temperature range. Some other advantages of our OEM over the traditional Raman lidar temperature retrieval algorithm include not requiring correction or gluing to the raw lidar measurements, providing a cutoff height for the temperature retrievals that specifies the height to which the retrieved profile is independent of the a priori temperature profile, and the retrieval's vertical resolution as a function of height. The new method is tested on PRR temperature measurements from the MeteoSwiss RAman Lidar for Meteorological Observations system in clear and cloudy sky conditions, compared to temperature calculated using the traditional PRR calibration formulas, and validated with coincident radiosonde temperature measurements in clear and cloudy conditions during both daytime and nighttime.

Abstract. Airborne sunphotometer measurements acquired by the NASA Ames Airborne Tracking Sunphotometer (AATS-14) aboard the NASA P-3 research aircraft are used to evaluate dark-target over-land retrievals of extinction aerosol optical depth (AOD) from spatially and temporally near-coincident measurements by the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) during the summer 2008 Arctic Research of the Composition of the Troposphere from Aircraft and Satellites (ARCTAS) field campaign. The new MODIS Collection 6 aerosol data set includes retrievals of AOD at both 10 km × 10 km and 3 km × 3 km (at nadir) resolution. In this paper we compare MODIS and AATS AOD at 553 nm in 58 10 km and 134 3 km retrieval grid cells. These AOD values were derived from data collected over Canada on four days during short time segments of five (four Aqua and one Terra) satellite overpasses of the P-3 during low-altitude P-3 flight tracks. Three of the five MODIS–AATS coincidence events were dominated by smoke: one included a P-3 transect of a well-defined smoke plume in clear sky, but two were confounded by the presence of scattered clouds above smoke. The clouds limited the number of MODIS retrievals available for comparison, and led to MODIS AOD retrievals that underestimated the corresponding AATS values. This happened because the MODIS aerosol cloud mask selectively removed 0.5 km pixels containing smoke and clouds before the aerosol retrieval. The other two coincidences (one Terra and one Aqua) occurred during one P-3 flight on the same day and in the same general area, in an atmosphere characterized by a relatively low AOD (< 0.3), spatially homogeneous regional haze from smoke outflow with no distinguishable plume. For the ensemble data set for MODIS AOD retrievals with the highest-quality flag, MODIS AOD agrees with AATS AOD within the expected MODIS over-land AOD uncertainty in 60% of the retrieval grid cells at 10 km resolution and 69% at 3 km resolution. These values improve to 65 % and 74%, respectively, when the cloud-affected case with the strongest plume is excluded. We find that the standard MODIS dark-target over-land retrieval algorithm fails to retrieve AOD for thick smoke, not only in cloud-contaminated regions but also in clear sky. We attribute this to deselection, by the cloud and/or bright surface masks, of 0.5 km resolution pixels that contain smoke.

Abstract The assimilation of observations indicative of quantitative cloud and precipitation characteristics is desirable for improving weather forecasts. For many fundamental reasons, it is a more difficult problem than the assimilation of conventional or clear-sky satellite radiance data. These reasons include concerns regarding nonlinearity of the required observation operators (forward models), nonnormality and large variances of representativeness, retrieval, or observation–operator errors, validation using new measures, dynamic and thermodynamic balances, and possibly limited predictability. Some operational weather prediction systems already assimilate precipitation observations, but much more research and development remains. The apparently critical, fundamental, and peculiar nature of many issues regarding cloud and precipitation assimilation implies that their more careful examination will be required for accelerating progress.

Abstract. The aerosol component of the Oxford-Rutherford Aerosol and Cloud (ORAC) combined cloud and aerosol retrieval scheme is described and the theoretical performance of the algorithm is analysed. ORAC is an optimal estimation retrieval scheme for deriving cloud and aerosol properties from measurements made by imaging satellite radiometers and, when applied to cloud free radiances, provides estimates of aerosol optical depth at a wavelength of 550 nm, aerosol effective radius and surface reflectance at 550 nm. The aerosol retrieval component of ORAC has several incarnations – this paper addresses the version which operates in conjunction with the cloud retrieval component of ORAC (described by Watts et al., 1998), as applied in producing the Global Retrieval of ATSR Cloud Parameters and Evaluation (GRAPE) data-set. The algorithm is described in detail and its performance examined. This includes a discussion of errors resulting from the formulation of the forward model, sensitivity of the retrieval to the measurements and a priori constraints, and errors resulting from assumptions made about the atmospheric/surface state.
