AbstractThe traditionally held assumption that photo-dependent processes are the predominant source of H2O2 in natural waters has been recently questioned by an increrasing body of evidence showing the ubiquitiousness of H2O2 in dark water bodies and in groundwater. In this study, we conducted field measurement of H2O2 in an intra-meander hyporheic zone and in surface water at East River, CO. On-site detection using a sensitive chemiluminescence method suggests H2O2 concentrations in groundwater ranging from 6 nM (at the most reduced region) to ~ 80 nM (in a locally oxygen-rich area) along the intra-meander transect with a maxima of 186 nM detected in the surface water in an early afternoon, lagging the maximum solar irradiance by ∼ 1.5 h. Our results suggest that the dark profile of H2O2 in the hyporheic zone is closely correlated to local redox gradients, indicating that interactions between various redox sensitive elements could play an essential role. Due to its transient nature, the widespread presence of H2O2 in the hyporheic zone indicates the existence of a sustained balance between H2O2 production and consumption, which potentially involves a relatively rapid succession of various biogeochemically important processes (such as organic matter turnover, metal cycling and contaminant mobilization). More importantly, this study confirmed the occurrence of reactive oxygen species at a subsurface redox transition zone and further support our understanding of redox boundaries on reactive oxygen species generation and as key locations of biogeochemical activity.

The optokinetic response (OKR) is an effective behavioural assay to investigate functional vision in zebrafish. The rapid and widespread use of gene editing, drug screening and environmental modulation technologies has resulted in a broader need for visual neuroscience researchers to access affordable and more sensitive OKR, contrast sensitivity (CS) and visual acuity (VA) assays. Here, we demonstrate how 2D- and 3D-printed, striped patterns or drums coupled with a motorised base and microscope provide a simple, cost-effective but efficient means to assay OKR, CS and VA in larval-juvenile zebrafish. In wild-type, five days post-fertilisation (dpf) zebrafish, the 2D or 3D set-ups of 0.02 cycles per degree (cpd) (standard OKR stimulus) and 100% black-white contrast evoked equivalent responses of 24.2±3.9 or 21.8±3.9 saccades per minute, respectively. Furthermore, although the OKR number was significantly reduced compared to the 0.02 cpd drum (p<0.0001), 0.06 and 0.2 cpd drums elicited equivalent responses with both set-ups. Notably, standard OKRs varied with time of day; peak responses of 29.8±7 saccades per minute occurred in the early afternoon with significantly reduced responses occurring in the early morning or late afternoon (18.5±3 and 18.4±4.5 saccades per minute, respectively). A customised series of 2D printed drums enabled analysis of VA and CS in 5-21 dpf zebrafish. The saccadic frequency in VA assays was inversely proportional to age and spatial frequency and in CS assays was inversely proportional to age and directly proportional to contrast of the stimulus. OKR, VA and CS of zebrafish larvae can be efficiently measured using 2D- or 3D-printed striped drums. For data consistency the luminance of the OKR light source, the time of day when the analysis is performed, and the order of presentation of VA and CS drums must be considered. These simple methods allow effective and more sensitive analysis of functional vision in zebrafish.

The aim of the study was to define whether changes in psychophysical performance will occur after the exposure to light of a specific color during the early afternoon decrease in work capacity. The evaluation of psychophysical performance was carried out on a group of 50 subjects using the following tools: Grandjean Scale, Attention and Perceptiveness Test (TUS), and GONOGO test. The study was performed for exposure to reference light, white light enriched by blue light (WBL), and white light enriched by red light (WRL). The analysis of psychophysical performance results indicates the positive influence of a specific color of light on different factors of psychophysical performance. Exposure to WRL among participants from the 22–34 subgroup contributed to an increase in the number of correct tests and the speed of work as well as a decrease in the number of mistakes, less boredom, and higher performance. The exposure to WBL among participants from the 55+ subgroup decreased the number of mistakes and reduced the response time. The results are consistent with the outcomes of previous research carried out on an international level, confirming that blue and red light are effective at increasing psychophysical performance. It was demonstrated that the psychophysical performance increases also when blue or red light is a significant component in the spectrum of white light.

As Mediterranean streams are highly dynamic, reconstructing space–time water presence in such systems is particularly important for understanding the expansion and contraction phases of the flowing network and the related hydro–ecological processes. Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) can support such monitoring when wide or inaccessible areas are investigated. In this study, an innovative method for water presence detection in the river network based on UAV thermal infrared remote sensing (TIR) images supported by RGB images is evaluated using data gathered in a representative catchment located in Southern Italy. Fourteen flights were performed at different times of the day in three periods, namely, October 2019, February 2020, and July 2020, at two different heights leading to ground sample distances (GSD) of 2 cm and 5 cm. A simple methodology that relies on the analysis of raw data without any calibration is proposed. The method is based on the identification of the thermal signature of water and other land surface elements targeted by the TIR sensor using specific control matrices in the image. Regardless of the GSD, the proposed methodology allows active stream identification under weather conditions that favor sufficient drying and heating of the surrounding bare soil and vegetation. In the surveys performed, ideal conditions for unambiguous water detection in the river network were found with air–water thermal differences higher than 5 °C and accumulated reference evapotranspiration before the survey time of at least 2.4 mm. Such conditions were not found during cold season surveys, which provided many false water pixel detections, even though allowing the extraction of useful information. The results achieved led to the definition of tailored strategies for flight scheduling with different levels of complexity, the simplest of them based on choosing early afternoon as the survey time. Overall, the method proved to be effective, at the same time allowing simplified monitoring with only TIR and RGB images, avoiding any photogrammetric processes, and minimizing postprocessing efforts.

The eastern red bat (Lasiurus borealis Müller, 1776) is a widespread species that roosts in evergreen or dead foliage suspended in trees during winter but retreats to leaf litter during colder periods. Roosting in leaf litter by eastern red bats makes them vulnerable to prescribed fires in winter. Using radio telemetry, we tracked 33 male eastern red bats to 101 winter (November–February) roosts and quantified roost locations, habitat surrounding roosts, and landscape attributes of roost locations. When roosting in trees, bats preferred oaks but generally avoided other tree species; they used pines in proportion to their availability. During colder periods, bats retreated to roosts in leaf litter where 21% suffered mortality either from predation/scavenging or unknown causes while roosting on the ground. Models of roost selection indicated that southerly aspect was the most important factor determining roost selection, and both tree- and leaf-litter roosts were predominately (≥94%) on upper south-facing slopes. Prescribed burning in late morning/early afternoon on clear days when temperatures under leaf litter are warmest in winter could reduce potential mortality by allowing faster arousal time for hibernating bats.

ABSTRACT Diurnal raptors were counted during their southward migration in autumn of 2019 at Kenting National Park, southern Taiwan, an important hawkwatch site along the East-Asian Oceanic Flyway. Observations were conducted from 1 September to 31 October 2019 in the morning hours, but the observation period was extended to 1400 H whenever large numbers of raptors passed the site before noon. A total of 329,559 individuals of 14 migratory raptor species was recorded. The Chinese Sparrowhawk (Accipiter soloensis) and Gray-faced Buzzard (Butastur indicus) made up 78.3% (257,971 birds) and 21.6% (71,045 birds) of the total, respectively. The number of Chinese Sparrowhawks increased significantly when we extended the survey duration from 1200 H to 1400 H (paired t-test, t = 2.44, P = 0.04), but the number of Gray-faced Buzzards did not (t = 1.94, P = 0.09). Thus, Chinese Sparrowhawks may continue passing the site en route to the Philippine Islands in the afternoon hours, whereas Gray-faced Buzzards usually stop migrating in early afternoon, at least under certain conditions. How prevailing wind conditions along the East-Asian Oceanic Flyway in autumn shape the different migratory strategies of these two hawk species requires further study.

Abstract. We present a climatology of trade cumulus cold pools and their associated changes in surface weather, vertical velocity and cloudiness based on more than 10 years of in situ and remote sensing data from the Barbados Cloud Observatory. Cold pools are identified by abrupt drops in surface temperature, and the mesoscale organization pattern is classified by a neural network algorithm based on Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite 16 (GOES-16) Advanced Baseline Imager (ABI) infrared images. We find cold pools to be ubiquitous in the winter trades – they are present about 7.8 % of the time and occur on 73 % of days. Cold pools with stronger temperature drops (ΔT) are associated with deeper clouds, stronger precipitation, downdrafts and humidity drops, stronger wind gusts and updrafts at the onset of their front, and larger cloud cover compared to weaker cold pools, which agrees well with the conceptual picture of cold pools. The rain duration in the front is the best predictor of ΔT and explains 36 % of its variability. The mesoscale organization pattern has a strong influence on the occurrence frequency of cold pools. Fish has the largest cold-pool fraction (12.8 % of the time), followed by Flowers and Gravel (9.9 % and 7.2 %) and lastly Sugar (1.6 %). Fish cold pools are also significantly stronger and longer-lasting compared to the other patterns, while Gravel cold pools are associated with significantly stronger updrafts and deeper cloud-top height maxima. The diel cycle of the occurrence frequency of Gravel, Flowers, and Fish can explain a large fraction of the diel cycle in the cold-pool occurrence as well as the pronounced extension of the diel cycle of shallow convection into the early afternoon by cold pools. Overall, we find cold-pool periods to be ∼ 90 % cloudier relative to the average winter trades. Also, the wake of cold pools is characterized by above-average cloudiness, suggesting that mesoscale arcs enclosing broad clear-sky areas are an exception. A better understanding of how cold pools interact with and shape their environment could therefore be valuable to understand cloud cover variability in the trades.

Abstract Background Antimicrobial stewardship (AMS) committees ensure appropriate antimicrobial utilization. One stewardship intervention is to evaluate the delivery model of high-cost antimicrobials to better utilize resources and mitigate expenses. We analyzed the total medication waste and costs of high-cost antimicrobials, specifically daptomycin, ertapenem, amphotericin, and micafungin, at our institution and propose innovative cost-savings changes at a systems level. Methods This retrospective study consisted of 263 patients. All patients were at least 18 years old who was admitted to our academic institution from January 2020 to April 2021 and received daptomycin, ertapenem, amphotericin, or micafungin. Demographics, daily medication dosage, total doses received, the date and time of the start of the medication, last administered dose, and discontinued order were recorded. Results The daptomycin cohort consisted of 143 patients with 46.2% females and average age of 56.3 years. In this group, 145.3 vials were wasted which equated to a loss of &22,630. The ertapenem group had 53 patients with 62.3% females and a mean age of 62.3 years. There were 24 vials wasted with a calculated loss of &1080. The amphotericin cohort had 32 patients with an average age of 52.2 years and 43.8% females. There were 189 vials wasted with a loss of &46,116. The micafungin group had 35 patients with 42.9% females and average age of 60.4 years. This group had 12 vials wasted with a loss of &2052. Conclusion Each antimicrobial has a specific formulation protocol. Daptomycin and ertapenem formulation occurs in the early morning. Amphotericin formulation occurs 2 hours prior to medication use. Micafungin formulation occurs at the time the order label prints. These medications were more often administered in the late morning to early afternoon timeframe. The order to discontinue the medications also occurred at the same interval. One reason could be due to decisions made on morning rounds from primary teams and specialty input. These orders would then be placed after rounds. A cost-saving method would be to batch and change the formulation time for all antimicrobials to later in the afternoon, which would not only prevent waste, but also allow the AMS team to effectively audit appropriate antimicrobial use. Abstract. Flux measurements of nitrogen oxides (NOx) were made over London using airborne eddy covariance from a low-flying aircraft. Seven low-altitude flights were conducted over Greater London, performing multiple overpasses across the city during eight days in July 2014. NOx fluxes across the Greater London region (GLR) exhibited high heterogeneity and strong diurnal variability, with central areas responsible for the highest emission rates (20–30 mg m−2 h−1). Other high-emission areas included the M25 orbital motorway. The complexity of London's emission characteristics makes it challenging to pinpoint single emissions sources definitively using airborne measurements. Multiple sources, including road transport and residential, commercial and industrial combustion sources, are all likely to contribute to measured fluxes. Measured flux estimates were compared to scaled National Atmospheric Emissions Inventory (NAEI) estimates, accounting for monthly, daily and hourly variability. Significant differences were found between the flux-driven emissions and the NAEI estimates across Greater London, with measured values up to 2 times higher in Central London than those predicted by the inventory. To overcome the limitations of using the national inventory to contextualise measured fluxes, we used physics-guided flux data fusion to train environmental response functions (ERFs) between measured flux and environmental drivers (meteorological and surface). The aim was to generate time-of-day emission surfaces using calculated ERF relationships for the entire GLR; 98 % spatial coverage was achieved across the GLR at 400 m2 spatial resolution. All flight leg projections showed substantial heterogeneity across the domain, with high emissions emanating from Central London and major road infrastructure. The diurnal emission structure of the GLR was also investigated, through ERF, with the morning rush hour distinguished from lower emissions during the early afternoon. Overall, the integration of airborne fluxes with an ERF-driven strategy enabled the first independent generation of surface NOx emissions, at high resolution using an eddy-covariance approach, for an entire city region.

The records of the Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer (AVHRR) instrument observations can resolve the current lack of a long global climate data record of Reflected Solar Flux (RSF), by transforming these measurements into broadband flux at the top-of-atmosphere. This paper presents a methodology for obtaining daily mean RSF (Wm−2) from AVHRR. First, the narrowband reflectances are converted to broadband reflectance using empirical regressions with the Clouds and the Earth’s Radiant Energy System (CERES) observations. Second, the anisotropy is corrected by applying Angular Distribution Models (ADMs), which convert directional reflectance into a hemispherical albedo. Third, the instantaneous albedos are temporally interpolated by a flexible diurnal cycle model, capable of ingesting any number of observations at any time of day, making it suitable for any orbital configuration of NOAA and MetOp satellites. Finally, the twilight conditions prevailing near sunrise and sunset are simulated with an empirical model. The entire day is then integrated into a single daily mean RSF. This paper furthermore demonstrates the methodology by validating a full year (2008) of RSF daily means with the CERES SYN1deg data record, both on daily and subdaily scale. Several configurations are tested, each excluding particular satellites from the constellation in order to mimic orbital changes (e.g., orbital drift), and to assess their relative importance to the daily mean RSF. The best performance is obtained by the combination of at least one mid-morning (NOAA-17 or MetOp-A) and one early afternoon (NOAA-18) orbit. In this case, the RMS difference with CERES is about 7 Wm−2. Removing NOAA-18 degrades the performance to an RMS difference of 12 Wm−2, thereby providing an estimate of the impact of NOAA-19’s orbital drift between 2016 and 2020. Very early or late observations (NOAA-15, NOAA-16) provide little added value, and both mid-morning orbits turn out to be almost interchangeable given their close temporal proximity.
