When the inverse finite element method (inverse FEM) is used to reconstruct the deformation field of a multi-element structure with strain measurements, strain measurement errors can lower the reconstruction accuracy of the deformation field. Furthermore, the calibration ability of a self-structuring fuzzy network (SSFN) is weak when few strain samples are used to train the SSFN. To solve this problem, a novel two-step calibration method for improving the reconstruction accuracy of the inverse FEM method is proposed in this paper. Initially, the errors derived from measured displacements and reconstructed displacements are distributed to the degrees of freedom (DOFs) of nodes. Then, the DOFs of nodes are used as knots, in order to produce non-uniform rational B-spline (NURBS) curves, such that the sample size employed to train the SSFN can be enriched. Next, the SSFN model is used to determine the relationship between the measured strain and the DOFs of the end nodes. A loading deformation experiment using a three-element structure demonstrates that the proposed algorithm can significantly improve the accuracy of reconstruction displacement.

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to describe a calibration method developed to improve the accuracy of a six degrees-of-freedom medical robot. The proposed calibration approach aims to enhance the robot’s accuracy in a specific target workspace. A comparison of five observability indices is also done to choose the most appropriate calibration robot configurations. Design/methodology/approach – The calibration method is based on the forward kinematic approach, which uses a nonlinear optimization model. The used experimental data are 84 end-effector positions, which are measured using a laser tracker. The calibration configurations are chosen through an observability analysis, while the validation after calibration is carried out in 336 positions within the target workspace. Findings – Simulations allowed finding the most appropriate observability index for choosing the optimal calibration configurations. They also showed the ability of our calibration model to identify most of the considered robot’s parameters, despite measurement errors. Experimental tests confirmed the simulation findings and showed that the robot’s mean position error is reduced from 3.992 mm before calibration to 0.387 mm after, and the maximum error is reduced from 5.957 to 0.851 mm. Originality/value – This paper presents a calibration method which makes it possible to accurately identify the kinematic errors for a novel medical robot. In addition, this paper presents a comparison between the five observability indices proposed in the literature. The proposed method might be applied to any industrial or medical robot similar to the robot studied in this paper.

For the analysis of structural components, the finite element method (FEM) has become the most widely applied tool for numerical stress- and subsequent durability analyses. In industrial application advanced FE-models result in high numbers of degrees of freedom, making dynamic analyses time-consuming and expensive. As detailed finite element models are necessary for accurate stress results, the resulting data and connected numerical effort from dynamic stress analysis can be high. For the reduction of that effort, sophisticated methods have been developed to limit numerical calculations and processing of data to only small fractions of the global model. Therefore, detailed knowledge of the position of a component’s highly stressed areas is of great advantage for any present or subsequent analysis steps. In this paper an efficient method for the a priori detection of highly stressed areas of force-excited components is presented, based on modal stress superposition. As the component’s dynamic response and corresponding stress is always a function of its excitation, special attention is paid to the influence of the loading position. Based on the frequency domain solution of the modally decoupled equations of motion, a coefficient for a priori weighted superposition of modal von Mises stress fields is developed and validated on a simply supported cantilever beam structure with variable loading positions. The proposed approach is then applied to a simplified industrial model of a twist beam rear axle.

A method for dynamic analysis of flexible bladed-disk/shaft coupled systems is presented in this paper. Being independant substructures first, the rigid-disk/shaft and each of the bladed-disk assemblies are analyzed separately in a centrifugal force field by means of the finite element method. Then through a modal synthesis approach the equation of motion for the integral system is derived. In the vibration analysis of the rotating bladed-disk substructure, the geometrically nonlinear deformation is taken into account and the rotationally periodic symmetry is utilized to condense the degrees of freedom into one sector. The final equation of motion for the coupled system involves the degrees of freedom of the shaft and those of only one sector of each of the bladed-disks, thereby reducing the computer storage. Some computational and experimental results are given.

AbstractRecent technological advances, such as single-cell RNA sequencing (scRNA-seq), allow the measurement of gene expression profiles of individual cells. These expression profiles typically exhibit substantial variations even across seemingly homogeneous populations of cells. Two main different sources contribute to this measured variability: actual differences between the biological activity of the cells and technical measurement errors. Analysis of the biological variability may provide information about the underlying gene regulation of the cells, yet distinguishing it from the technical variability is a challenge. Here, we apply a recently developed computational method for measuring the global gene coordination level (GCL) to systematically study the cell-to-cell variability in numerical models of gene regulation. We simulate ‘biological variability’ by introducing heterogeneity in the underlying regulatory dynamic of different cells, while ‘technical variability’ is represented by stochastic measurement noise. We show that the GCL decreases for cohorts of cells with increased ‘biological variability’ only when it is originated from the interactions between the genes. Moreover, we find that the GCL can evaluate and compare—for cohorts with the same cell-to-cell variability—the ratio between the introduced biological and technical variability. Finally, we show that the GCL is robust against spurious correlations that originate from a small sample size or from the compositionality of the data. The presented methodology can be useful for future analysis of high-dimensional ecological and biochemical dynamics.

In this paper, we present a new approach to model the steady-state heat transfer in heterogeneous materials. The multiscale finite element method (MsFEM) is improved and used to solve this problem. MsFEM is a fast and flexible method for upscaling. Its numerical efficiency is based on the natural parallelization of the main computations and their further simplifications due to the numerical nature of the problem. The approach does not require the distinct separation of scales, which makes its applicability to the numerical modeling of the composites very broad. Our novelty relies on modifications to the standard higher-order shape functions, which are then applied to the steady-state heat transfer problem. To the best of our knowledge, MsFEM (based on the special shape function assessment) has not been previously used for an approximation order higher than p = 2, with the hierarchical shape functions applied and non-periodic domains, in this problem. Some numerical results are presented and compared with the standard direct finite-element solutions. The first test shows the performance of higher-order MsFEM for the asphalt concrete sample which is subject to heating. The second test is the challenging problem of metal foam analysis. The thermal conductivity of air and aluminum differ by several orders of magnitude, which is typically very difficult for the upscaling methods. A very good agreement between our upscaled and reference results was observed, together with a significant reduction in the number of degrees of freedom. The error analysis and the p-convergence of the method are also presented. The latter is studied in terms of both the number of degrees of freedom and the computational time.

This paper concentrates on a robust resonant control strategy of a permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM) for electric drivers with model uncertainties and external disturbances to improve the control performance of the current loop. Firstly, to reduce the torque ripple of PMSM, the resonant controller with fractional order (FO) calculus is introduced. Then, a robust two degrees-of-freedom (Robust-TDOF) control strategy was designed based on the modified resonant controller. Finally, by combining the two control methods, this study proposes an enhanced Robust-TDOF regulation method, named as the robust two degrees-of-freedom resonant controller (Robust-TDOFR), to guarantee the robustness of model uncertainty and to further improve the performance with minimized periodic torque ripples. Meanwhile, a tuning method was constructed followed by stability and robust stability analysis. Furthermore, the proposed Robust-TDOFR control method was applied in the current loop of a PMSM to suppress the periodic current harmonics caused by non-ideal factors of inverter and current measurement errors. Finally, simulations and experiments were performed to validate our control strategy. The simulation and experimental results showed that the THDs (total harmonic distortion) of phase current decreased to a level of 0.69% and 5.79% in the two testing environments.

Abstract The stability check of masonry structures is a debated problem in Italy that poses serious problems for its extensive use. Indeed, the danger of out of plane collapse of masonry walls, which is one of the more challenging to evaluate, is traditionally addressed not using finite element models (FEM). The power of FEM is not properly used and some simplified method are preferred. In this paper the use of the thrust surface is suggested. This concept allows to to evaluate the eccentricity of the membrane stresses using the FEM method. For this purpose a sophisticated, layered, finite element with a no-tension material is used. To model a no-tension material we used the smeared crack method as it is not mesh-dependent and it is well known since the early ’80 in an ASCE Report [1]. The described element has been implemented by the author in the program Nòlian by Softing.

The extended finite element method (XFEM) is an extension of the conventional finite element method based on the concept of partition of unity. In this method, the presence of a crack is ensured by the special enriched functions in conjunction with additional degrees of freedom. This approach also removes the requirement for explicitly defining the crack front or specifying the virtual crack extension direction when evaluating the contour integral. In this paper, stress intensity factors (SIF) for various crack types in plates and pipes were calculated using the XFEM embedded in ABAQUS. These results were compared against handbook solutions, results from conventional finite element method, and results obtained from finite element alternating method (FEAM). Based on these results, applicability of the ABAQUS XFEM to stress intensity factor calculations was investigated. Discussions are provided on the advantages and limitations of the XFEM.
