A broadband compact-sized planar four-port multiple-input–multiple-output (MIMO) antenna with polarization diversity is presented. The proposed dual circularly polarized (CP) MIMO antenna consists of four G-shaped monopole elements, two of which are left-hand CP and the other two are right-hand CP. A vertical line strip in the G-shaped radiating element acts in balancing the vertical and horizontal electric field components to obtain 90° phase difference between them for circular polarization. Also, an I-shaped strip is incorporated between the ground planes of the G-shaped antenna elements to obtain equal voltage level in the proposed MIMO configuration. The dual circular polarization mechanism of the proposed MIMO/diversity antenna is analysed from the vector current distributions. The impedance bandwidth (S11 ≤ –10 dB) of the MIMO antenna is 105.9% (4–13 GHz) and the 3 dB axial ratio bandwidth (ARBW) is 67.7% (4.2–8.5 GHz), which is suitable for C-band applications. The overall size of the MIMO antenna is 70 × 68 × 1.6 mm3, and the minimum isolation between the resonating elements is 18 dB. The envelope correlation coefficient is less than 0.25, and the peak gain within the resonating band is 6.4 dBi.

This article presents a compact, planar, quad-port ultra-wideband (UWB) multiple-input–multiple-output (MIMO) antenna with wide axial ratio bandwidth (ARBW). The proposed MIMO design consists of four identical square-shaped antenna elements, where each element is made up of a circular slotted ground plane and feed by a 50 Ω microstrip line. The circular polarization is achieved using a protruding hexagonal stub from the ground plane. The four elements of the MIMO antenna are placed orthogonally to each other to obtain high inter-element isolation. FR-4 dielectric substrate of size 45 × 45 × 1.6 mm3 is used for the antenna prototype, and a good agreement is noticed among the simulated and experimental results. The proposed MIMO antenna shows 3-dB ARBW of 52% (3.8–6.5 GHz) and impedance bandwidth (S11 ≤ −10 dB) of 144% (2.2–13.5 GHz).

Stealth wearable wireless devices are gaining much attention in the personal security and fashion designing industry. A multiple-input multiple-output wideband circularly polarized antenna wearable on a dress (textile-related), which is immune to bending, is described in this paper, where a wearable on fabric dress application uses the MIMO techniques. It consists of two multiple-input multiple-output types of antenna elements: the resonating elements are created resembling a beautiful peacock shape and the ground plane is appropriately designed. A voltage is applied to each antenna element; the ground plane contains a microstrip transmission line-fed and a rectangular upside-down L-shaped (vertically flipped) strip used for circular polarizing. The antenna covers a 3 dB axial-ratio-band-width (ARBW) value of 5.20–7.10 GHz and impedance bandwidth (S11 less than −10 dB) of 03.60–13.0 GHz. The proposed attachable wearable fabric (textile) multiple-input multiple-output wideband antenna exhibits envelope correlation coefficient (ECC) <0.02, diversity gain (DG) >9.96, channel capacity loss (CCL) <0.2 b/s/Hz, total active reflective coefficient (TARC) <−10 dB, mean effective gain (MEG) ratio within ±0.5 dB. There is dual-sense circular polarization in this antenna and high isolation between resonating elements (higher than 18). A specific absorption rate (SAR) of the proposed antenna for human tissues specimen is also discussed for different situations related to the human body. The overall size of the proposed CP textile MIMO antenna is 34 : 5 × 42 × 1 mm3. Because of its clothing layers (textile), practical performance, and miniature size, the designed MIMO antenna may be helpful for wearable on cloths on human body wireless devices and systems. The proposed antenna can be made unrecognizable because of the beautiful peacock design that can easily mix with the designs of fabric (in the fashion dress). The simulated antenna was fabricated with the help of conventional manual fabrication techniques and tested in real-time situations. The edge-to-edge distance amid the MIMO radiating antennas is 14.2 mm, and the achieved isolation is greater than 18 dB after optimization of the proposed antenna.

AbstractA new design method of an ultra-wideband circularly-polarized planar multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO) antenna is presented in this paper. The proposed MIMO antenna consists of four unit cell antennas, being comprised of a microstrip feed line and a square slotted ground plane. In the proposed unit cell design, a circular stub is protruded from the ground plane strip for achieving circular polarization. The unit cell of the MIMO antenna is optimized by adjusting design parameters. The compact four-port MIMO antenna prototype is designed on the FR4 substrate with the overall dimensions of 45 × 45 × 1.6 mm3. The proposed four-port MIMO antenna design provides an impedance bandwidth (S11 < −10 dB) of 112% (3.1–11 GHz) and a 3 dB axial ratio bandwidth of 36% (4.8–6.9 GHz). The performance of the fabricated MIMO antenna shows good agreement between the EM simulation and measurement results.

Multiple Input Multiple Output (MIMO) system is a technology that has the potential to be developed to increase channel capacity. The increase in channel capacity in the MIMO system is not only determined by the number of antennas, but is determined by the characteristics and arrangement of the antenna concept. This study identifies the effect of circular polarization on the MIMO antenna system on channel capacity. Co-polarization consists of a Left Hand Circular Polarization (LHCP) and Right Hand Circular Polarization (RHCP) configuration, while cross-polarization consists of an RHCP-LHCP configuration. The co-polarization of the antenna with the LHCP configuration results in an estimated channel capacity of 11,578 bps / Hz when it is at the lowest Signal to Noise Ratio (SNR) is 5 dB

Abstract This paper reports a novel polarization-reconfigurable antenna array based on the theory of mode combination (MC), which can electronically alter its polarization states between left-hand circular polarization (LCP) mode, right-hand circular polarization (RCP) mode, and two combined linear polarization (LP) modes. The array element is adopted as the L-probes fed circularly-polarized antenna reported by Luk et al. [1]. To verify the concept, a prototype of 2×2 antenna array is manufactured and tested. By properly exciting the feeding probes, four polarization modes can be switchable. Measurement results show that the proposed antenna has an overlapped −10 dB impedance bandwidth around 34 % for both CP modes and LP(2) mode, and an overlapped 3 dB axial-ratio bandwidth around 22.0 % of the CP modes. The average realized gains are around 12.4 dB for CP modes and LP(1) mode, which remain stable in the axial-ratio bandwidth.

In this paper, we obtain the basic configuration of the left-hand circular polarization (LHCP) array two patches stack triangular truncated microstrip antenna. This construction use the basic corporate feed microstrip-line with modified lossless T-junction power divider on radiating patch for circularly polarized-synthetic aperture radar (CP-SAR) sensor embedded on airspace with compact, small, and simple configuration. The design of Circular Polarization (CP) is realized by truncating the whole three tips and adjusting the parameters of antenna at the resonant frequency, f=5.2 GHz. The results of characteristic performance and S-parameter for the LHCP array two patches stack antenna at the resonant frequency show successively about 7.24 dBic of gain, 1.99 dB of axial ratio (Ar), and -11.43 dB of S-parameter. Moreover, the impedance bandwidth and the 3 dB-Ar bandwidth of this antenna are around 560 MHz (10.77%) and 50 MHz (0.96%), respectively.

AbstractA broadband circularly polarized slotted square patch antenna with horizontal meandered strip (HMS) is presented and studied. The HMS feeding technique provides the good impedance matching and broadside symmetrical radiation patterns. A set of cross asymmetrical slots are etched on the radiating patch to realize the circular polarization. An electrically small stub is added on the edge of the antenna for further improvement in performance. Measured 10-dB impedance bandwidth (IBW) and 3-dB axial ratio bandwidth (ARBW) of the proposed antenna are 32.31 % (3.14–4.35 GHz) and 20.91 % (3.34–4.12 GHz), respectively. The gain of the antenna is varied from 3.5 to 4.86dBi within 3-dB ARBW. Measured results matched well with the simulated results.

Abstract A bilayer split-ring chiral metamaterial converts the linearly polarized wave, into a nearly perfect left or right-handed circularly polarized wave. The proposed antenna is intended to operate at center frequency of 5.80 GHz with switchable polarization capability. The polarization re-configurability is achieved by electronically switching of two PIN-diode pairs, which are embedded into bilayer split-ring Chiral Metamaterial. The optimized length of rectangular patch is 16 mm and width is 12.1 mm. Two types of radiation characteristics offered by the proposed antenna; left hand circularly polarized in mode 1 and right hand circularly polarized in mode 2. Measured results show that its impedance bandwidth is 155 MHz from 5.70 to 5.855 GHz for both mode 1 and mode 2. The measured axial-ratio bandwidth is 100 MHz from 5.75 to 5.85 GHz for mode 1 and 110 MHz from 5.73 to 5.84 GHz for mode 2. Antenna has LHCP gain of 2.52 dBi and RHCP gain of −23 dBi in mode 1. RHCP gain of 2 dBi and polarization purity of about −20 dBi is obtained in mode 2. The proposed antenna has simple structure, low cost and it has potential application in field of wireless communication (i.e., WiMax, WLAN etc.).

A compact printed quadrant shaped monopole antenna is introduced in this paper as a good prospect for ultra wideband- multiple-input multiple-output (UWB-MIMO) system. The proposed MIMO antenna comprises two perpendicularly oriented monopoles to employ polarization diversity. An open circuit folded stub is extended from the ground plane of each radiating element to enhance the impedance bandwidth satisfying the UWB criteria. Two ‘L’ shaped slots are further etched on the radiator to provide good isolation performance between two radiators. The desirable radiator performances and diversity performances are ensured by simulation and/or measurement of the reflection coefficient, radiation pattern, realized peak gain, envelope correlation coefficient (ECC), diversity gain, mean effective gain (MEG) ratio and channel capacity loss (CCL). Results indicate that the proposed antenna exhibits 2.9–11 GHz 10 dB return loss bandwidth, mutual coupling <−20 dB, ECC < 0.003, MEG ratio ≈ 1, and CCL < 0.038 Bpsec/Hz, making it a good candidate for UWB and MIMO diversity application.
