Continuous monitoring of knee motion can provide deep insights into patients’ rehabilitation status after knee injury and help to better identify their individual therapeutic needs. Potentiometers have been identified as one possible sensor type for continuous monitoring of knee motion. However, to verify their use in monitoring real-life environments, further research is needed. We aimed to validate a potentiometer-embedded knee brace to measure sagittal knee kinematics during various daily activities, as well as to assess its potential to continuously monitor knee motion. To this end, the sagittal knee motion of 32 healthy subjects was recorded simultaneously by an instrumented knee brace and an optoelectronic reference system during activities of daily living to assess the agreement between these two measurement systems. To evaluate the potentiometer’s behavior during continuous monitoring, knee motion was continuously recorded in a subgroup (n = 9) who wore the knee brace over the course of a day. Our results show a strong agreement between the instrumented knee brace and reference system across all investigated activities as well as stable sensor behavior during continuous tracking. The presented potentiometer-based sensor system demonstrates strong potential as a device for measuring sagittal knee motion during daily activities as well as for continuous knee motion monitoring.

Learning about ratios empowers children with a language and procedure for comparing relative quantities in an efficient way. Understanding ratios is also a necessary precursor to meaningful work with proportional reasoning. The fact that many adults do not reach the Piagetian level described as “formal thought” is often attributed to weaknesses in their proportional reasoning skills. Aside from justifying the study of ratios as a critical component of formal thought, the varied real-life applications for ratios (cooking, model building, map reading, converting among and between measurement systems, calculating odds, scale drawing, unit pricing, etc.) make this area particularly meaningful to students. This month's department suggests a series of ratio activities for children that make use of a computer to produce graphically collections of objects in a grid with variable dimensions.

AbstractAn issue associated with standardization efforts is the need to develop useful reference intervals (RI). Lack of proper RI may hamper the implementation of standardization in Laboratory Medicine as standardization can modify analyte results and, without adequate RI, this can impair the result interpretation. Once defined, RI obtained with analytical procedures that produce results traceable to the corresponding reference system can be transferred among laboratories, providing that they use commercial assays that produce results traceable to the same reference system and populations have the same characteristics. Multicenter studies are needed for a robust definition of traceable RI, using experimental protocols that include well defined prerequisites. Particularly, employed methods must produce results that are traceable to the reference system for that specific analyte. Thus, the trueness of laboratories producing reference values should be verified and, if necessary, experimental results corrected in accordance with correlation results with the selected reference. If requirements in the adoption of traceable RI are fulfilled, the possibility of providing RI that are applicable to any laboratory, able to produce results traceable to the reference system, is realistic. The definition of traceable RI should hopefully cause the disappearance of different RI employed for the same analyte, providing more effective information to clinicians.

Naming is a specific linguistic act, intimately linked with values, traditions, hopes, fears and events in people’s lives. Names reveal the many preferences of their owners (or givers) in terms of real life objects, actions, features and beliefs. Place names provide the most useful geographical reference system in the world. The topic of names is a multidisciplinary field that has occupied the attention of philosophers of language, anthropologists, linguists and ordinary people. In this study, I try to analyze the names of meeting rooms in the East Java Governmental Building. The reason to choose this object is because the East Java Governmental Building is the center of government/ administration in East Java. This study aims to find out the kinds of names applied in the naming of meeting rooms in the East Java Governmental Building and the presuppose reasons behind the name chosen of the East Java Governmental Building. This study is a qualitative study. Based on the classification of the data, they were classified to two groups: the names of governors in East Java and the names of the kings or military chief of great kingdoms in East Java. The meeting rooms in the governmental building of East Java are named after important people in the history of the province. To conclude, the administration named all the meeting rooms, as the most important rooms in the building to welcome guests, using the name of people who have big influence and involvement in the history of East Java so that it has roots to its history.

Many jobs can now be automated, and one of them is in handling and processing customers’ complaints before they could proceed with failure investigation. In this paper, we discuss a real-life challenge faced by the manufacturing engineers in a life science multinational company. This paper presents a step by step methodology of multilingual translation and multiclassification of Repair Codes. This solution will allow manufacturing engineers to take advantage of machine learning model to reduce the time taken to manually translate row by row and verify the Repair Codes in the file.

Current total knee replacements solve the problem of arthritic knee joints, but the evidence is that normal patterns of knee motions are not restored (1) In addition; paradoxical anterior sliding of the femur on the tibia can occur in the first half of the flexion range (2). Achieving natural motion is likely to be important for daily activities which involve higher angles of flexion, in terms of restoring normal soft tissue lengths and patello-femoral mechanics. Studies have shown the damaging effects of anterior femoral slide on the tibia affecting both the patella and the patellar tendon (3). Our paper examines new knee replacement designs which incorporate geometrical features to regain anatomical knee motion.

Context:Abnormal lower extremity kinematics during dynamic activities may be influenced by impaired gluteus maximus function.Objective:To examine whether hip-extensor strength and gluteus maximus recruitment are associated with dynamic frontal-plane knee motion during a jump-landing task.Design:Exploratory study.Setting:Biomechanics laboratory.Participants:40 healthy female volunteers.Main Outcome Measures:Isometric hip-extension strength was measured bilaterally with a handheld dynamometer. Three-dimensional hip and knee kinematics and gluteus maximus electromyography data were collected bilaterally during a jumplanding test. Data were analyzed with hierarchical linear regression and partial correlation coefficients (α = .05).Results:Hip motion in the transverse plane was highly correlated with knee motion in the frontal plane (partial r = .724). After controlling for hip motion, reduced magnitudes of isometric hip-extensor strength (partial r = .470) and peak gluteus maximus recruitment (partial r = .277) were correlated with increased magnitudes of knee valgus during the jump-landing task.Conclusion:Hip-extensor strength and gluteus maximus recruitment, which represents a measure of the muscle’s neuromuscular control, are both associated with frontal-plane knee motions during a dynamic weight-bearing task.

Background: Knee osteoarthritis is a prevalent disease. Unloading the affected compartment using a brace is a treatment option. Objectives: To determine whether a decompressive knee brace alters loading in medial knee osteoarthritis following 2 and 8 weeks of use. Study design: Within subjects; pre- and post-testing. Methods: A total of 15 individuals with medial knee osteoarthritis attended four sessions: baseline, fitting, 2 weeks after fitting (post), and 8 weeks after fitting (final). A gait analysis was performed at baseline (without knee brace), post and final. Knee adduction impulse, first and second peak knee adduction moment, knee motion, and walking velocity were calculated. Participants also recorded hours and steps taken while wearing the brace. Results: On average, the brace was worn for more than 6 h/day. Through use of repeated-measures analysis of variance, it was determined that the knee adduction impulse and second peak knee adduction moment were reduced ( p < 0.05) at post and final compared to baseline (36% and 34% reduction in knee adduction impulse, 26% reduction in second peak knee adduction moment for post and final, respectively). Furthermore, participants walked faster with increased knee motion during stance. Conclusion: The studied decompressive brace was effective in reducing potentially detrimental forces at the knee—knee adduction impulse and second peak knee adduction moment during the stance phase of gait. Clinical relevance The data from this study suggest that use of a medial unloading brace can reduce potentially detrimental adduction moments at the knee. Clinicians should use this evidence to advocate for use of this noninvasive treatment for people presenting with medial knee osteoarthritis.

We developed a knee brace to measure the knee angle and implicitly the flexion/extension (f/e) of the knee joint during daily activities. The goal of this study is to classify and validate a limited set of physical activities on ten young healthy subjects based on knee f/e. Physical activities included in this study are walking, ascending and descending of stairs, and fast locomotion (such as jogging, running, and sprinting) at self-selected speeds. The knee brace includes 2 accelerometers for static measurements and calibration and an inductive sensor for dynamic measurements. As we focus on physical activities, the inductive sensor will provide the required information on knee f/e. In this study, the subjects traversed a predefined track which consisted of indoor paths, outdoor paths, and obstacles. The activity classification algorithm based on peak detection in the knee f/e angle resulted in a detection rate of 95.9% for walking, 90.3% for ascending stairs, 78.3% for descending stairs, and 82.2% for fast locomotion. We conclude that we developed a measurement device which allows long-term and ambulatory monitoring. Furthermore, it is possible to predict the aforementioned activities with an acceptable performance.
