A descriptive attribute or characteristic of an object is called dimension. In the area of Business Excellence, this concept is associated with national quality awards and Business Excellence models. The aim of the paper is to identify the Business Excellence dimensions, on the grounds of comparative analysis of selected national quality award models, including determination of relations between the Business Excellence and Sustainability. Cross-cultural comparison of Business Excellence core values in the analyzed excellence models/national quality awards will be helpful in identification of the Business Excellence dimensions. The main findings of this study are: The basis for achieving Business Excellence is to respect the core principles of TQM (Total Quality Management); Business Excellence dimensions can be identified based on core values; Business Excellence can be characterized through dimensions; there is a relationship between the Business Excellence dimensions and the Sustainability dimensions. This study is based on information that was gathered through an extensive literature review (research publications and research studies (documents) about the national quality awards and Business Excellence models using Internet and research databases (Web of Science, Scopus, EBSCO) and the authors’ own experience. Methods of analysis, comparison, selection, abstraction, induction, deduction, determination, and statistics were used. The paper is organized as follows: the methodology approach; the comparative review of the secondary data on Business Excellence core values in the analyzed models; discussion about the main findings, including the link between the Business Excellence dimensions and Sustainability dimensions.

Abstract A new approach, called “business excellence”, has emerged in the business world and scientific literature in the past decades. Facing an increasingly turbulent and chaotic environment, more and more companies have implemented business excellence strategies and made quality a key element of their business philosophy. Modern measurement frameworks were created and developed by national or international bodies such as the excellence business models. These models provide guidelines and criteria for evaluation and are used by companies across the world as groundwork for continuous improvement. The paper aims to present and compare three well-known business excellence models in the world: Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award, the Australian Business Excellence Framework and the European Foundation for Quality Management Excellence Model. In this respect, the authors have displayed the key elements of each business excellence model, followed by their comparison. In order to achieve the previous goals, the paper uses two methods: analysis and comparison. The information were obtained from multiple secondary sources of data- books and academic journal articles from the domains of total quality management and production economics found in libraries and electronic databases- through a desk research based on a significant literature review. The paper contributes to a better understanding of the business excellence models and may help managers to design and implement business excellence strategies. The paper shows that business excellence models provide a holistic approach to continuous improvement for any type of organization. These models are based on sound values, concepts and principles and have proved their viability during the time. Consequently, they gave birth to frameworks that allow organizations to benchmark their performances and demonstrate best practices in their field of activity. Also, the research findings indicate that the American model constituted a landmark for other business excellence models around the world.

Purpose: This paper aims to explore the framework, practices, and implementation of total quality management (TQM) in the service industry. Methodology/Approach: The present study focuses on the existing literature on several TQM dimensions and developed a framework that would allow the service industry to efficiently apply TQM, resulting in enhanced organizational performance. Findings: The research findings suggest that the relevance and implementation of TQM practices have a strong linkage to organizational performance.  Managers shall work for the accomplishments of TQM to achieve success in local and global competition. By implementing TQM practices effectively in the service industry, managers can see improvements in the organization’s function. Therefore, managers shall accept the TQM approach to improve overall service quality and organizational performance. Research Limitation/implication: The study is limited to secondary data collection and no primary research is carried out to verify the proposed framework. Originality/Value of paper: The present study contributes to the literature on TQM by developing a framework for the service industry. This adds to the existing knowledge on TQM in the service industry and builds a foundation to carry out future research. The proposed TQM framework will empower the organizations for superior performance by evaluating the factors, defining rooms for improvement, and designing ways to achieve business excellence.

Purpose Although studies of national quality awards and their benefits in fostering organizational excellence are ample in many countries, such relevant studies are rare in United Arab Emirates (UAE). The UAE launched its Business Excellence Awards for the private and public sectors almost two decades ago. The purpose of this study, therefore, is to shed light on benefits that UAE organizations have experienced through the Dubai Quality Award (DQA) and to understand the adoption of key DQA implementation factors. It also discusses implications and provides direction for future research. This study would be useful for managers considering whether to embark on the path of excellence through the DQA. Design/methodology/approach The purpose of this study is to explore the perceived benefits of participating in a quality award process. A total of 13 organizations that received the award between 2010 and 2013 are studied. This limit was set to include as many organizations as possible while not allowing too much time to have elapsed. Secondary data files were received from Department of Economic Development of Dubai. Data were registered in a MS Excel® spreadsheet by categorizing them according to the description of organizational practice, company name and industrial sector. These were then analyzed to extract the benefits and to capture lessons learned in the process. The data were also analyzed in the light of DQA criteria and key actions were recorded. Findings The study highlighted six major perceived benefits of quality awards in the UAE context and the results achieved by winning organizations on their journey of excellence. This study illustrates the enabler and results sides of the DQA in terms of perceived benefits. The analysis of winning organizations shows that a few sectors have been notably awarded. Although, winning organizations in the past four years fairly represent the trading, finance and retail sectors, the DQA is still not sufficiently utilized by all sector organizations. The represented sectors are mainly service-oriented and demonstrate that the key enabler, customer focus, has been given its due importance. As such, these organizations understand customer satisfaction, customer engagement and customer appreciation. Originality/value This is the first step toward an understanding of the current status of best practices of winning organizations on the road to business excellence through the DQA. This can be further developed by measuring business performances through other methods. This study provides an objective depiction of the current level of best practices and perceived benefits of the DQA. This study would be useful for managers considering whether to embark on the path of excellence through the DQA.

Abstract This paper provides a general approach to explore an appropriateness of business excellence models (BEMs) in Czech environment and investigates whether there is a specific approach to the adoption of best management practices in organizations embedded in the EFQM Excellence Model including as a part of national quality awards (NQAs) and evaluate impact on their key performance indicators. The aim of the paper is to provide an overview of the BEMs approach in the Czech Republic and found the relevance with the issues of resulting from the implementation of the EFQM model and selected performance indicators. As an example was involved the Czech companies awarded in NQAs in the area of excellence between 2010 and 2016. Based on a reflection of the current situation, there is still discussion about the implications for the implementation of the EFQM Excellence Model on the performance indicators. Using a qualitative methodology, based on case studies, we conducted a detailed analysis of key performance indicators before and after of the adoption of the EFQM Excellence Model, as well the company's current state of maturity. This study is based on information gathered through an extensive literature review using print media, research databases, and we also employed the available reporting for awarded companies. We systemized the variables of business excellence with the higher impact on organizational performance. The main findings of this study are in accordance with other studies carried out across Europe, namely the fact that the internal motivations are the key factor for the implementation of the EFQM Excellence Model, support of involvement from NQAs, the key role is in willingness of top managers (or owners) and methodological helpful is an implementation of ISO 9001 certification. On the basis of selected performance indicators, the positive development of the companies was demonstrated. This study contributes to the management literature on best practices, by highlighting a consistent trend in the use of the EFQM Excellence model, and is expected to help in the development and broadening of the excellence approach in the business environment.

PurposeThe purpose of this paper is to propose a national framework for promoting business excellence (NFPBE) using a quality management assessment framework (QMAF) with information knowledge communication (IKC) as an enabler.Design/methodology/approachThe NFPBE using the plan–do–check–act (PDCA) cycle is developed, re-enforcing key quality management aspects/areas including national quality awards, QMAF summary and national innovation programmes using a meta-analysis.FindingsThe operationalising of the NFPBE is enabled and supported by an auditing tool to assess the degree of mentoring provided by universities/research institutions/consulting firms to participating firms whose progress will be assessed by the QMAF. It was emphasised that the success of the framework requires the buy-in of national governments to support the programme through stimulus incentives such as government assistance with the costs of research and development, and cooperative research ventures between universities and companies.Research limitations/implicationsThe framework is conceptualised into a process flowchart, which is a blueprint to advancing business excellence in organisations at a national scale. The study is limited to only the conceptualisation of the framework. Therefore, an extended study of the framework implementation/application is required for revealing implementation guidelines.Practical implicationsThe national framework has a propensity to enhancing the business excellence of organisations at a national level. Therefore, quality managers and policy makers could use the framework to understand the quality management shortfalls and consider strategies to achieving business excellence.Originality/valueThis research study proposed a blueprint to advancing quality excellence in organisations at a national level, guided by several quality frameworks.

Purpose Organizations worldwide use national quality awards for improving organizational excellence. The United Arab Emirates (UAE) launched its business excellence awards for the private and public sectors almost two decades ago. Within the past dozen years, UAE companies have made considerable progress in introducing and developing their quality management systems. The purpose of this paper is to report the advance of UAE organizations in business excellence initiatives and highlight the contributions of the award-winning organizations in adopting business excellence approach. Design/methodology/approach This research used a qualitative approach to study award-winning organizations. Initially, secondary data were gathered from the Office of Department of Economic Development which is responsible for the administration of the Dubai Quality Award (DQA). Data were entered and categorized according to the description of organizational practice, company name, industrial sector and DQA criteria. The data were then analyzed using NVivo 10.0 software. Findings The DQA fosters and guides the excellence journey of aspiring organizations not only to win a quality award, but to strengthen their quality initiative through an informative assessment report. The DQA model was perceived by all organizations as a useful approach to quality improvement. Winning organizations have exhibited unique programs developed to embrace the DQA factors. Recommendations for aspiring organizations are discussed. Originality/value This paper should help managers to plan their journey toward business excellence and to create greater awareness of excellence frameworks and their usefulness when embarking on the path of excellence. This paper adds to the knowledge of the UAE’s excellence awards scheme and to the knowledge of business excellence best practices deep rooted in multi-cultural organizational environments. It highlights future research avenues for excellence frameworks.

Many countries have initialized and adopted the business excellence framework to encourage high-quality achievements and be recognised internationally, including in Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN). ASEAN as an economic and political organization of 11 countries located in Southeast Asia, established a business excellence framework to promote international organizational excellence and serve as national quality awards, which most of them adopted the Baldrige Excellence Framework (BEF). This study utilizes the accumulation and analysis of qualitative information using several sources and evidence from the business excellence frameworks and awards in ASEAN countries. This paper presents analytical comparisons of various aspects of the framework, such as their goals, award and recognition, categories, and score points (scores). It also discusses the similarities and differences among them.

The aim to be achieved in this study is to analyze the quality and productivity costs of case studies at the Islamic University of 45 Bekasi. The research method used in this study is a qualitative descriptive method. The location of the study was conducted at the Islamic University of 45 Bekasi. The data used is secondary data from the financial statements of Islamic University of 45 Bekasi in the academic year 2013/2014. Methods of data collection using interviews and observation. The highest quality cost discussion results are prevention costs at the cost of seminars and training for lecturers as much as Rp. 450,561,400, -. The lowest quality cost is the assessment fee at the cost of lecturer accreditation of Rp. 1,925,000, -. The percentage of quality costs is 2.1% smaller than the fairness of the total quality costs of 2.5%. The realization of the output of new student admissions was obtained in the 2013/2014 school year as many as 1,339 people. Total students 6,364 people. The study period is more than 4 years and has not graduated as many as 992 people. Failure costs as much as 16% of total students. Realization of financial output was achieved in the amount of Rp. 39,384,232,556, - ​​Input Rp. 35,606,307,800, - used to obtain output. Company productivity is efficient because output is greater than input. Company productivity is effective because the company achieves financial goals by obtaining a surplus of Rp. 3,777,924,756, - The conclusion that can be drawn is that quality costs are able to obtain output in the form of income exceeding its input value so that productivity is efficient and effective and surplus.

Este artigo tem como objetivo analisar a teoria sobre Gestão por Processos de Negócio (BPM - Business Process Management). Para isso foi realizada uma revisão bibliográfica sistemática e foram utilizadas técnicas de análise de publicações, citações e de bibliometria. Os resultados mostram a multidisciplinaridade de BPM, como as diferentes áreas de pesquisa compreendem o tema e como praticam essa abordagem. Dentre os periódicos relevantes para o tema, destacaram-se o Business Process Managament Journal, Knowlegde and Process Managemente Total Quality Management & Business Excellence. Dentre as abordagens de aplicação foi possível verificar que existem três tipos adotados pelo estudo e ao todo foram identificadas oito práticas de BPM. As redes de bibliometria mostraram a existência de agrupamentos bibliométricos que pouco interagem, e a relação de BPM com as abordagens de gestão da qualidade e reengenharia. Apesar do aumento de publicações na área, o que mostra a relevância do tema, as publicações tendem a seguir escolas distintas e que ainda atuam de forma isolada na área de BPM.

Planning for sustainable water management in the arid region of the southwestern USA is challenging mostly due to only partial understanding of factors converging around water supply and demand. Some of the factors that prompt concern about the adequacy of water resources are: (a) a growing urban population seeking a range of services, including the need to preserve and enhance aquatic ecosystems; (b) dwindling water storage due to multi-year drought conditions; and (c) the prospect of human-induced climate changes and its consequences in the hydrologic system of the region. This study analyzes the potential for water saving in the Phoenix Active Management Area (AMA) of Central Arizona, which includes the city of Phoenix, one of the fastest growing metropolitan areas in the country. Based on an extensive literature review and secondary data analysis, this paper investigates multiple factors that place increasing strain on current water resources, and attempts to extend this analysis to 2025. Outdoor water use within the residential landscape is the most important factor that strains water resources in Phoenix AMA. Any gain in efficiency through agricultural water demand management would not only improve the availability of water for other uses in the AMA, but would facilitate adaptation of the agricultural system to climate and other ongoing changes.
