Due to the lack of irrigation, the question of replacing soybean with an equivalent crop in the context of nutritional value and adaptation to the weather conditions of Crimea arises. One of such crops can be white lupine (Lupinus albus L.). The purpose of the research was twofold: assess L. albus productivity and crude protein content in grain; identify the most promising varieties and breeding numbers of white lupine under conditions of the steppe Crimea. In 2016-2018, the research was carried out on the experimental field of the Research Institute of Agriculture of Crimea according to the B.A. Dospekhov methods of field research and methodology of the State variety testing of agricultural crops. We studied the influence of bioclimatic conditions of the steppe Crimea on the growth, development, grain yield formation and protein content of four varieties (‘Michurinsky’, ‘Alyi Parus’ (standard), ‘Dega’ and ‘Desnyansky 2’) and four promising breeding numbers (‘CH-1022-09’, ‘CH-1677-10’, ‘CH-1397-10’ and ‘CH-6-11’). A wide diversity of weather conditions during the years of research made it possible to evaluate the samples in favorable and stressful conditions. In drier years, the growing season lasted 93–97 days because of the reduction in interphase periods; in milder ones it was101 days. The results in grain yield have been mixed: from 0.48 to 1.45 t/ha in 2016; from 0.35 to 0.56 t/ha in 2017; from 0.39 to 0.54 t/ha in 2018. On average, over a three-year study, breeding numbers ‘CH-1022-09’ and ‘CH-1677-10’ were the most productive. Their yield was 0.65 and 0.81 t/ha, respectively. In 2017, crude protein content varied from 24.02 to 28.49%; in 2018 – from 26.05 to 31.1%. On average, over the years of study, the highest protein content was typical for the varieties ‘Alyi Parus’ (29.30%) and ‘Michurinsky’ (29.03%). Breeding numbers ‘CH-1022-09’ and ‘CH-1677-10’ were distinguished by the highest indicators of productivity and yield; in terms of crude protein content, varieties ‘Alyi Parus’ and ‘Michurinsky’ were the best. Consequently, they are the ones that are recommended for cultivation.

Researches of protein fractional composition and fatty-acid composition of nonalkaloid and low-alkaloid lupine varieties oils for food production are actual in modern social and economic conditions, when it is required to find an alternative for soybean products. In the present work, the protein fractional composition and fatty acid composition of seeds of 11 low-alkaloid lupine varieties of domestic selection of three species: white, yellow and narrow-leaved lupine were investigated. The highest content of crude protein was detected in seed samples of yellow lupine, the crude protein content in white lupine seeds was slightly lower, and all the studied samples of narrow-leaved lupine were characterized by the lowest crude protein content. The total amount of soluble proteins in lupine seeds was high and varied from 84,21 to 92,45 %. In all examined samples of white lupine varieties the albumin fraction dominated, while in seeds of narrow-leaved and yellow lupine varieties the globulin fraction dominated. The crude fat content in the seeds of the different varieties varied from 4,62 to 9,28%. Differences were found in the fatty acid composition of lupin seed oil of different species. The fatty-acid composition of seeds was characterized by the predominance of oleic acid in the oil of white lupine varieties, with a clear predominance of linoleic acid in yellow and narrow-leaved lupine varieties.

SUMMARYThough bitter white lupin (Lupinus albus L.) is a traditional crop in Ethiopia, sweet lupins are new to the country. As a result, the nutritional value of low-alkaloid lupins has not been evaluated under Ethiopian conditions. Crude protein, amino acid and alkaloid contents of 16 cultivars of three annual lupin species grown in four lupin growing locations (Merawi, Finoteselam, Kossober-1 and Kossober-2) of Ethiopia were evaluated. Location × cultivar interaction was a significant source of variation for all traits (p < 0.0001). In all locations, blue entries had either similar (p ≥ 0.0584) or higher (p ≤ 0.0235) forage crude protein content than the Local Landrace, white group and yellow entry. Compared with the Local Landrace, white and blue entries, the sole yellow entry had higher (p ≤ 0.0148) seed crude protein content at all locations except at Kossober-2, where it had similar (p = 0.8460) crude protein content as white entries. The Local Landrace had the highest forage and seed alkaloid contents. However, sweet blue Vitabor and Sanabor entries had the lowest forage and seed alkaloid contents, respectively. Low alkaloid and higher crude protein contents of sweet lupins grown in Ethiopia show the possibility to use sweet lupin forage and seeds as cheap home-grown protein source for livestock feed and human food in the country. However, for more reliable information, the laboratory results need to be verified by animal and human evaluations of the crop.

The hinge of the lupine crop cultivation technology is the sowing time and the determination of the breeding area. According to the literature the early sowing (as soon as possible to go to the soil) and larger growing area is recommended for seed production. Based on the results of our 2 years experiment, the effect of sowing time and different spacing is important on yield of white lupine, and the effect of the sowing time is more significant. A decrease in the yield was observed after later sowings. The yield and the rate of its decreasing was varied in one year and among different years depending on wheather condition and sowing time. The role of sowing time is significant for protein content of seeds. The average protein content decreased due to the later sowings in 2014, while 2015 the protein content of seeds in early sowing time and of plants sowed 4 weeks later was similar. We measured less protein content in the 2. sowing time sowed 2 weeks later than the first one. In the studied years the average protein content of seeds from different row spaces were not different.

The research tested the application of complex fertilizers such as seed treatment with “Mikromak” and double topdressing by “Kodima R”, “Kodafol”, “Mikroel”, and “Strada N” on two backgrounds of mineral nutrition. Application of N40P50K70 increased grain productivity by 0.29–0.66 t ha-1 or 7.0–16.0%. All the preparations positively affected grain yield of winter rye. “Mikromak” and “Strada N” improved grain productivity by 0.46 t ha-1 on the background of N40P50K70 while “Mikromak” and “Mikroel” — by 0.33 t ha-1 on the background of N40P50K70 + N20 due to high number of reproductive stems and 1000 kernel weight. Seed treatment by “Mikromak” improved productivity of control plants by 0.31 t ha-1. “Mikromak” positively affected the number of productive stems from 2.9 to 3.6 pcs, 1000 kernel weight increased from 29.0 to 30.4 g. Crude protein content reached 6.4–9.8% in untreated seeds and 9.4–12.1% — when using “Mikromak”. Crude protein yield amounted to 450–600 kg ha-1 under “Mikromak” application exceeding the untreated variants by 130–160 kg ha-1. Application of “Mikroel” and “Strada N” provided the increase in crude protein of 90–110 kg ha-1 on the background of N40P50K70.

Collecting, exploring and using a suitable, genetically diverse source material with different ecological-geographical origin is a determining prerequisite for the breeding success. The present study was conducted during the 2014-2016 period at theInstituteofForage Crops(Pleven,Bulgaria) with 23 cultivars of white lupine originatingPoland,RussiaandUkraine. It was found a significant genetic diversity among the studied cultivars, which was a good prerequisite for starting a breeding program within the crop. The most favorable combination of a high seed productivity and crude protein content had cultivars ‘Tel Keram’, ‘Pflugs Ultra’, ‘WAT’, ‘Solnechnii’ and ‘Pink Mutant’, whose plants were also characterized by a mass of 1,000 seeds between 15 and 21 g. Genetically, the most distant from each other were ‘Bezimenii 1’ and ‘Pflugs Ultra’ compared to ‘Termis Mestnii’ and ‘Solnechnii’ as well as to ‘Tel Keram’. These cultivars are suitable as genitors for the development of high-yielding white lupine cultivars. Studied traits of pod length, number of seeds in a pod and seeds per plant showed a high positive phenotypic and genotypic correlation with the seed productivity in white lupine. Regarding productivity, it can be rely upon the mass of 1,000 seeds, plant height and number of seeds per plant due to their high total effect on the seed weight per plant.

Physiological changes incorporated into current maize hybrids suggest the occurrence of modifications in the nitrogen uptake dynamics, improving plant ability to uptake N during grain filling. This may justify late N side-dressing whenever environmental constraints prevent adequate nitrogen supply during crops vegetative development. This study evaluates effects of nitrogen fertilization at booting and silking on grain yield and kernel crude protein contents of commercial maize hybrids. Two experiments were set up in Eldorado do Sul, RS, during the 2001/2002 and 2002/2003 growing seasons. In 2001/2002, treatments were composed of two hybrids (Agroceres 303 and Pioneer 32R21), three nitrogen rates applied during maize vegetative development (30, 80 and 130 kg ha-1) and three nitrogen rates applied at silking (0, 50 and 100 kg ha-1). In 2002/2003, four hybrids (Agroceres 303, Pioneer 32R21, Dekalb 215 and Syngenta Penta) and four nitrogen rates side-dressed at booting (0, 50, 100 and 150 kg.ha-1) were assessed. There were significant increments in grain yield and kernel crude protein content with nitrogen fertilization at booting and silking. Grain yield response to late N side-dressing differed among cultivars. The impact of nitrogen fertilization at silking was higher at the smallest rate of N during the plant vegetative development. Enhancements in grain yield with late N side-dressing resulted from increases in grain weight. Modern hybrids can uptake nitrogen during silking, contradicting the hypothesis that late N side-dressing is not efficient to improve maize grain yield.

The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of different sowing times on growth and yield characters of white lupine (Lupinus albus L.). The experiment was carried out in the Field Crops Experimen Station at Eyyubiye campus of Harran University during 2017-2018 semi-arid season. In the study, four different sowing times (30 October, 15 November, 30 November and 15 December) were evaluated in randomized complete blocks design with 4 replications. The results revealed that the impact of different sowing times on fresh herb and hay yield, 100 seed weight (gr) and seed yield of white lupine plant was statistically significant, but did not impact on crude protein, hay, crude protein in the seed, plant height and number of branches per plant. Overall, the results suggested that white lupen planted at the end of November could successfully be grown in Þanlýurfa conditions.
