The present research believes that teaching materials which promote Indonesian traditional heritages should be available for students both inside and outside the classroom. For this reason, the research aims to preserve the presence of local cultures in the mid of English culture’s popularity by developing a book which contains aformentioned topics. The outcome of this empirical research is a textbook used as media for extensive reading in the student’s pleasure time. Using the ADDIE approach, this research collected data from several undergraduate students currently studying at a state university in Indonesia. The students were requested to read the West Kalimantan Culinary Book and share their ideas on what they have just read. In addition, the book was evaluated by experts from linguistic and cultural fields. The student’s feedbacks were very useful as they would reflect a potential user’s view in the future. Meanwhile, evaluations from experts helped us verify if the book was developed properly. Results indicated that readers responded to this culinary book positively. The book was considered helpful and unique as it was written in the English language. Since the book was aimed for extensive reading materials, we also checked and confirmed that this book followed the principles of extensive reading expressed by Day and Bamford (2002). To conclude, the research indicates its limitation particularly in terms of generalisability and provides suggestions for further research in order to improve the instruments of the data collection.

Reading as one of the skills constructing English competency has a special portion in the curriculum of English studies programs at higher education institutions. The prevalent purpose of reading classes is to enable students to grasp knowledge from any type of text written in English. This skill could be achieved through learning a series of techniques and strategies in reading, and most importantly extensive reading activities. However, the fact that the class weights as much as 2 credits (SKS) does not give sufficient training time to achieve the maximum target. Hence, an out-of-class activity should be imposed, such as reading portfolio. This paper seeks to address the criteria of a good reading portfolio, as well as the strengths and weaknesses of this supplementary reading activity given to the students of the English Education program of IAIN Purwokerto. The data are collected through documenting the findings of previous researches on the criteria of a good reading portfolio, interviewing student-sample, and observing the process of reading portfolio given to the students of IAIN Purwokerto. The results showed that a reading portfolio should contain the purpose of the course, the text liked and picked by the students, clear scoring criteria, and continuous evaluation. The strengths of reading portfolio are evoking students’ interest for reading, instilling reading habit, and promoting learning autonomy and self-evaluation, the weaknesses are lack of resources, complex vocabulary and structure, and less motivation.

This study involved 273 students of three English Education Departments in Jember as research objects. Survey and interview methods were used to obtain the data. The research findings show that English Education Department students mostly interested to reading materials about entertainment and lifestyle, arts, religious, education and historical theme, and they avoid reading political and sport. Based on these findings, the suggestion for lecturers who specialize in the subjects related to reading activities is they should be able to present the teaching materials with themes favored by students in order to improve students’ reading motivation.

The debate as to whether or not listening skills can be used as a testing device for measuring language proficiency—particularly grammatical competence—has been quite a controversial issue for the longest time. Yet, current research findings have not been entirely conclusive and sufficient either way. Hence, this particular study was conducted to address the problem given the existing research gap in the field. Firstly, the investigation sought to determine the listening proficiency level of 40 ESL freshmen in a state university for grammatical distinctions utilizing the mean score. Secondly, it identified the learners’ common errors and difficulties encountered in listening for grammatical distinctions using frequency and sentence analysis. To validate the results of the communicative listening test, a writing composition exercise was duly administered. The results showed that the respondents have very good proficiency levels in listening for grammatical distinctions in terms of inflectional patterns of singular and plural forms of subjects or predicates and good proficiency levels in terms of inflectional patterns for present and past tense of verbs. However, it was found that there still exist some problems in terms of more complex syntactic constructions. Results revealed that the respondents were confused and disrupted in some listening items when the test sentence is embedded with intervening words, phrases, or subordinate clauses. This problem may actually be indicative of socio-psycholinguistic factors to retain what they learned in an academic setting, but outside of it, the intervening words easily disrupted their concentration and memory. Lastly, the new normal caused by the COVID 19 pandemic has forced educators and students into a new learning environment: the online classroom. In recognition of this, the test was administered online, and the results similarly processed but with consideration of the electronic platform as a moderating variable. This shift in the modality of instruction affects ways of learning that have not necessarily been plotted before, as observed by EFL and ESL experts like Brown (2000) and Richards (2016). Thus, while it is not the primary focus of the study, this paper nevertheless highlights this new socio-technological aspect as a crucial moderator of listening assessment for better grammatical competence.

The method used in this study is a qualitative exploratory method with an inductive approach. Through this method, data is obtained based on questionnaire documentation distributed via google form. The research sample was obtained through purposive sampling technique from three universities in Riau: Riau University, Suska Riau Islamic State University, and Riau Islamic University. Furthermore, this study uses thematic data analysis techniques to identify themes through the results of the questionnaire to find important or interesting patterns from the data and use these to discuss or find the purpose of this study. The results of the analysis show that students need teaching materials in the form of audio in the form of narrative voices to hone and test their listening skills specifically for listening only. Then, students also need to listen to audio-visual in the form of videos to hone and test the overall listening power of these students. Because during the Covid-19 pandemic, all the things needed to listen to that which were of great interest to students were published online through digital classes with the Google Classroom platform. This is evidenced by the results of a survey of 64% of students requiring online learning with audio, visual, audio-visual teaching materials through Google Classroom digital classes. The results of this need are used to develop learning materials as a form of innovative learning products during the Covid-19 pandemic on campus.

To be academically successful a university student is required to read extensively on topics related to his or her field of study. The current proliferation and availability of electronic academic reading materials on various online platforms require academic staff to gain an understanding of their impact on the format preference and reading behaviour of students. Knowledge of emerging trends can guide academic staff to provide reading materials in the format best suited to the reading preferences of students. To establish the current format and reading behaviour trends a multiple case study design was employed targeting undergraduate students from the University of Zululand, South Africa and Delta State University, Nigeria. A questionnaire was used to collect data from a sample of 237 students. A combined return rate of 69.9% was achieved. The findings revealed a strong preference for reading textbooks in printed format. The preference for reading documents in electronic or print format was influenced by factors such as the length of the document, the purpose of reading the document, and whether the document is written in the student’s native language or not. External factors such as access to electronic gadgets and data, and the cost thereof, as well as peer pressure also influenced preference for a specific format. The study recommends that regular surveys should be conducted in academic institutions to keep track of current and changing trends in the format preferences and resultant reading behaviour of the students to enable academics to adapt their prescribed reading materials to a format best suited to the students’ preferences.

The aim of this research was to find out and identify grammatical errors contained in abstract of undergraduate theses written by students at English Education Department in Manado State University. This research used descriptive method. In the data gathering, this study applied purposive sampling technique. The subject of this research was 50 abstracts of undergraduate theses published only in 2018 and then analyzed by using error analysis technique. Based on the findings, the most frequent error made by the students was omission with 19 errors (37.25%), addition with 8 errors (15.68%), archiform with 6 errors (11.76%), misformation with 11 errors (21.56%), and the least was misordering with 2 errors (3.92 %). This shows that there is still need for improvement in grammar teaching and learning for academic writing should be free from grammatical mistakes. From 50 abstracts documented by the researcher, there are only 21 abstract which are grammatically correct, and 29 abstracts contain 51 errors. Since abstract is the published piece for research report by graduated students, there should be more concern in abstract writing, particularly its accuracy in grammar. Keywords: Grammatical error, abstract, undergraduate thesis, English Education Department
