The present research believes that teaching materials which promote Indonesian traditional heritages should be available for students both inside and outside the classroom. For this reason, the research aims to preserve the presence of local cultures in the mid of English culture’s popularity by developing a book which contains aformentioned topics. The outcome of this empirical research is a textbook used as media for extensive reading in the student’s pleasure time. Using the ADDIE approach, this research collected data from several undergraduate students currently studying at a state university in Indonesia. The students were requested to read the West Kalimantan Culinary Book and share their ideas on what they have just read. In addition, the book was evaluated by experts from linguistic and cultural fields. The student’s feedbacks were very useful as they would reflect a potential user’s view in the future. Meanwhile, evaluations from experts helped us verify if the book was developed properly. Results indicated that readers responded to this culinary book positively. The book was considered helpful and unique as it was written in the English language. Since the book was aimed for extensive reading materials, we also checked and confirmed that this book followed the principles of extensive reading expressed by Day and Bamford (2002). To conclude, the research indicates its limitation particularly in terms of generalisability and provides suggestions for further research in order to improve the instruments of the data collection.

An exposure to free choice of inspiring reading materials among Thai students has not been largely promoted in English language class, affecting negative language learning attitudes and development of a reading habit. This present study examined the effects of extensive reading (ER) on Thai university students. To measure their attitudes towards comfort, anxiety, intellectual value, practical value and linguistic value before and after 15-week extensive reading. 68 undergraduate students were asked to complete the 5-point Likert scale questionnaire of 23 items adopted from Yamashita (2013). A semi-structure interview was also employed. The results revealed students had positive feelings in which ER increased their comfort and decreased their anxiety at the significance level of 0.05. They also had positive beliefs about the intellectual benefits. However, the practical value that ER might bring advantages to students’ study or future career was lower in the posttest. There was no significant difference between the pretest and posttest in their beliefs about English language study benefits. Qualitative data from the semi-structured interviews showed that students satisfied with their own choice of reading preference. The findings suggested the use of ER approach in English as a foreign language (EFL) classes to increase students’ positive attitudes, decrease their negative ones towards reading, and develop good reading habits through their reading engagement.

Needs analysis aims to identify what English students should learn. However, there are still many teachers who have not analyzed the material needs of students. The material used by the teacher is too general for students. Students do not get English for specific purposes for particular majors. This results when students find it challenging to communicate with guests in certain areas. This study aims to analyze the English material and analyze the suitability of the English language material based on the ESP principles. This study used the descriptive qualitative method. The study subjects were students of the class XI beauty program—the use of questionnaires and document checklists as data collection instruments. The study results indicate that students need unique English materials and special English skills in the tourism sector, especially in beauty spas. Furthermore, based on the document checklist, the English teaching materials in the beauty program are not by the ESP concept because the data shows that the teaching materials are too general and not close to the student's field. Therefore, students hope that the school can design an ESP program to improve competence in beauty spa activities.

English is an international language, and almost all Indonesians are aware that most of the teaching materials that use English contain foreign cultural content and topics from abroad. This will cause students to be less aware of the culture of the nation, because they are more focused on understanding foreign cultures. This problem will be incompatible with the goals of national education, which emphasize the development of national cultural identity and the formation of virtuous character, as well as the competitiveness of human resources for the Indonesian nation. This research is the development of teaching materials that aim to produce a product that will later be useful for students in improving their English language skills. In this study also discusses how a teacher can manage their teaching from rich local materials and resources into attractive teaching and learning management. As a teaching material, the product produced is English-language material, using easy-to-understand vocabulary, and is not accompanied by practice questions at the end of the reading, so that students can read calmly.
