This study introduces a new distribution in the family of generalized exponential distributions generated using the transformed-transformer method. Some properties of the distribution are presented. The new distribution has three parameters and they are estimated numerically using the BGFS iterative method implemented in R software. Two real sets of data are adopted to demonstrate the flexibility and potential applications of the new distribution.

One new species and three new distribution records for the family Crangonidae (Crustacea: Decapoda) are reported from Western Australia. A new species, Philocheras gardenensis sp. nov. is described and illustrated based on specimens collected from the Western Australia. The new species closely resembles Philocheras fasciatus (Risso, 1816), but can be distinguished easily by the absence of lobe-like folds on either side of the middle line of the carapace, the presence of a lateral carina extending from the branchiostegal spine, the longer middorsal carina and distolateral tooth of the antennal scale. A key for the genus Philocheras is provided, including currently, a total of 58 species and subspecies reported worldwide. Range extensions of three Crangonid shrimps are reported within Australia, and they are Philocheras obliquus (Fulton & Grant, 1902), Pontocaris arafurae (Bruce, 1988) and Vercoia gibbosa Baker, 1904.

ABSTRACT The distribution of externally studentized midrange was created based on the original studentization procedures of Student and was inspired in the distribution of the externally studentized range. The large use of the externally studentized range in multiple comparisons was also a motivation for developing this new distribution. This work aimed to derive analytic equations to distribution of the externally studentized midrange, obtaining the cumulative distribution, probability density and quantile functions and generating random values. This is a new distribution that the authors could not find any report in the literature. A second objective was to build an R package for obtaining numerically the probability density, cumulative distribution and quantile functions and make it available to the scientific community. The algorithms were proposed and implemented using Gauss-Legendre quadrature and the Newton-Raphson method in R software, resulting in the SMR package, available for download in the CRAN site. The implemented routines showed high accuracy proved by using Monte Carlo simulations and by comparing results with different number of quadrature points. Regarding to the precision to obtain the quantiles for cases where the degrees of freedom are close to 1 and the percentiles are close to 100%, it is recommended to use more than 64 quadrature points.

AbstractThe properties encompassed by the family of complex metal oxides span the spectrum from superconductors to insulating ferroelectrics. Included in this family are the new colossal magnetoresistive perovskites with potential applications in advanced high density magnetic data storage devices based on single or multilayer thin films units of these materials fabricated by vapor phase deposition (PVD) methods. The realization of this potential requires solving basic thin film materials problems requiring understanding and controlling the growth of these materials. Toward this end, we have grown La0.7Ca0.3MnO3 and La0.7Sr0.3MnO3 on LaAlO3 single crystal substrates by pulsed laser and RF sputter deposition at temperatures from 500° C to 900° C and annealed at over 900° C for about 10 hours. The evolution of the microstructure of these films was studied by scanning probe microscopies and transmission electron microscopy (TEM).The results of SPM characterization showed that at the lower end of the growth temperature range, the as-grown films were polygranular with grain size increasing with temperature. The 500° C as-grown films appeared to be amorphous while the 750° C film grains were layered with terrace steps often one unit cell high. In contrast, films grown at 900° C consisted of coalesced islands with some 3-D surface crystals. After annealing, all films had coalesced into very large extended layered islands. The change in microstructure was reflected in a decreased resistivity of coalesced films over their unannealed granular precursors. Previous reported work on the growth of La0.84 Sr0.16MnO3 and La0.8Sr0 2CoO3 grown demonstrated the sensitivity of the microstructure to substrate and deposition conditions. Films grown on an “accidental” vicinal surface grew by a step flow mechanism.

Many-valued logics in general and 3-valued logic in particular is an old subject which had its beginning in the work of Łukasiewicz [Łuk]. Recently there is a revived interest in this topic, both for its own sake (see, for example, [Ho]), and also because of its potential applications in several areas of computer science, such as proving correctness of programs [Jo], knowledge bases [CP] and artificial intelligence [Tu]. There are, however, a huge number of 3-valued systems which logicians have studied throughout the years. The motivation behind them and their properties are not always clear, and their proof theory is frequently not well developed. This state of affairs makes both the use of 3-valued logics and doing fruitful research on them rather difficult.Our first goal in this work is, accordingly, to identify and characterize a class of 3-valued logics which might be called natural. For this we use the general framework for characterizing and investigating logics which we have developed in [Av1]. Not many 3-valued logics appear as natural within this framework, but it turns out that those that do include some of the best known ones. These include the 3-valued logics of Łukasiewicz, Kleene and Sobociński, the logic LPF used in the VDM project, the logic RM3 from the relevance family and the paraconsistent 3-valued logic of [dCA]. Our presentation provides justifications for the introduction of certain connectives in these logics which are often regarded as ad hoc. It also shows that they are all closely related to each other. It is shown, for example, that Łukasiewicz 3-valued logic and RM3 (the strongest logic in the family of relevance logics) are in a strong sense dual to each other, and that both are derivable by the same general construction from, respectively, Kleene 3-valued logic and the 3-valued paraconsistent logic.

The endemic Australian primitive moth family Lophocoronidae is reviewed. The family was previously known from three species represented by male 'museum' specimens only. The family now consists of one genus, Lophocorona Common, with six species of which three (L. robinsoni, L. commoni and L. flavicosta) are here described as new. L. robinsoni differs markedly from the remaining species in wing pattern and phenology, but all species have very similar male genitalia. Females of two species (L. robinsoni and L. commoni) are described. All species and parts of their male genitalia are illustrated; a key to all species is given. All new distribution records are listed and the known Australian range of the family now extends from east of Perth to south of Sydney. Lophocoronid structure is surveyed, including information on aspects of the soft anatomy of L. pediasia Common: cephalic, spiracular, abdominal base and male genital musculature, male internal genitalia, alimentary canal, gross structure of the central nervous system (CNS) and thoracic aorta. The most significant findings include the following: extrinsic labral muscles are absent; the relatively well-developed mandibles have no musculature, hence the (unknown) lophocoronid pupa must be adecticous; there is no intrinsic proboscis musculature; the posterolateral comer of the laterocervicale covers the anepisternal tooth; an anterior pronotal plate is present; the mesobasistemum is markedly produced anteriorly; wingsurface scales are largely hollow; a sizeable metapostphragma is present; the female has a piercing oviscapt similar to that of Eriocraniidae and Acanthopteroctetidae; a stomodaeal crop is well developed, extending into the abdomen, and followed by a narrow tubular portion in front of the mesenteron; there are four malpighian tubules, each opening into the gut; the deutocerebral lobes meet in front of the posterionnost pharyngeal sucking pump dilator (forming a 'deutocerebral loop'); the abdominal nerve cord has five ganglionic masses and thick connective tissue on top; the metathoracic aorta touches the dorsal pulsatile diaphragm. Six basal clades are recognised within the Lepidoptera-Glossata: (1) Eriocraniidae, (2) Acanthopteroctetidae (including Catapterix), (3) Lophocoronidae, (4) Neopseustidae, (5) Exoporia and (6) Heteroneura. Putative autapomorphies are listed and discussed for each. Several structural traits are compared throughout the six clades, and 47 potentially phylogenetically informative characters are identified (Appendices 1 and 2). Analysis of these characters with Hennig86, by using a hypothetical ancestor (reconstructed on the basis of character state distribution within the non-glossatan moth grade), yields a single shortest tree: Eriocraniidae + (Acanthopteroctetidae + (Lophocoronidae + (Neopseustidae + (Exoporia + Heteroneura)))). This tree is compared with a number of competing trees; it is concluded to be the most biologically meaningful one. The formal classification of the Glossata is discussed. The Acanthopteroctetidae are assigned to a superfamily of their own. Redundant taxon names above familygroup (Dacnonypha, Lophocoronina and Neopseustina) are discarded. The new name Coelolepida is introduced for the high-rank taxon comprising all Glossata except the Eriocraniidae; it is characterised primarily by the acquisition of hollow wing-surface scales and an apomorphic configuration of the first thoracic spiracle. Some ecological and conservation-related implications of the new insights in glossatan phylogeny are outlined.

Extensive fieldwork in different climatic regimes of Gujarat state during last four years resulted in the collection of more than 349 fungal species. Out of these, 37 species from 20 genera were found to be from the family Polyporaceae. Among these, five species are being reported for the first time here as new distribution records. The highest number of species is represented by the genus Trametes while, Cerrena unicolo, Neolentinus kauffmanii, Dichomitus squalens, Panus conchatus and Laetiporus sulphureus possessed single species each.

The β-fructofuranosidase from the yeast Rhodotorula dairenensis (RdINV) produces a mixture of potential prebiotic fructooligosaccharides (FOS) of the levan-, inulin- and neo-FOS series by transfructosylation of sucrose. In this work, the gene responsible for this activity was characterized and its functionality proved in Pichia pastoris. The amino acid sequence of the new protein contained most of the characteristic elements of β-fructofuranosidases included in the family 32 of the glycosyl hydrolases (GH32). The heterologous yeast produced a protein of about 170 kDa, where N-linked and O-linked carbohydrates constituted about 15% and 38% of the total protein mass, respectively. Biochemical and kinetic properties of the heterologous protein were similar to the native enzyme, including its ability to produce prebiotic sugars. The maximum concentration of FOS obtained was 82.2 g/L, of which 6-kestose represented about 59% (w/w) of the total products synthesized. The potential of RdINV to fructosylate 19 hydroxylated compounds was also explored, of which eight sugars and four alditols were modified. The flexibility to recognize diverse fructosyl acceptors makes this protein valuable to produce novel glycosyl-compounds with potential applications in food and pharmaceutical industries.
