Modern primary education, especially mathematics, requires constant innovation of teaching practice in order to modernize, rationalize, and efficiently the teaching process. Teaching mathematics should be experienced as a process that promotes learning with understanding, stimulates motivation, active learning, research, critical thinking, analysis, problem solving, drawing conclusions, exchange of experiences. The tendency to improve the quality of mathematics education has resulted in many studies pointing to the benefits of research-based mathematics (IN) teaching, known as inquiry-based learning (IBL), recognized as an essential way of organizing the teaching process to develop key competencies, abilities and skills in 21st century. Тhe aim of this paper is to see, based on a comprehensive theoretical analysis and the results of previous research. The created model of teaching mathematics based on research represents a useful framework for improving the quality of the process of teaching and learning mathematics, and empowers teachers in its application and affirmation, gaining insight into the way of organizing research learning.

This study focuses on the teaching and learning of the pre-numeracy concepts through technology at Foundation Phase. It pre-supposes that the use of information and communication technology resources presents an innovative way to improve teaching and learning mathematics. The author argues that young children's relational conceptions of number lie at the core of their mathematics education as any subsequent mathematics learning heavily depends on it. This learning process is by no little means assisted through the mathematical activities teachers engage their learners and the resources they avail them, such as information and communication technologies. Principally important are the discursive interactions that ought to arise around the activities and the resources used. The author presumes that mastery learning is advanced by teaching using the variation theory. Teaching through variation aims to anchor knowledge; to make mathematical knowledge visible to amateurs through distinguishing the essential features of an ‘object of learning’ from its non-essential features. A treatment group was taught with information and communication technologies against a control group that used traditional teaching methods. Despite other intervening variables, the results of the study suggested better learning outcomes from the experimental group.

Along with the development of technology both directly and indirectly can change someone in communicating, socializing and learning, this is a challenge for lecturers to be able to use technology optimally and to facilitate interaction with students in teaching and learning both in class and outside the classroom so that indicators in the unit of lecture events and semester learning design can be achieved. Edmodo is a social network platform for lecturers and students to share ideas, files, agenda of activities and assignments. Edmodo is designed to create lecturer and student interactions that emphasize fast communication, polling, assignments, sharing ideas, and much more. The research aims: 1) to find out whether mathematics learning using Edmodo (experimental) is better than learning without using Edmodo (conventional) on mathematical communication; 2) to find out whether students who study using Edmodo are positive towards learning mathematics. Quantitative research with quasi-experiment method, the research design used is nonequivalent control group design: providing two different treatments to two groups, namely the experimental class (Edmodo) and the control class (conventional). Quantitative data collection and analysis techniques using normality test, homogeneity test, two average similarity test, and t test. The results of the study are: 1). Learning using edmodo is better with learning without using edmodo with mathematical communication skills. 2). Students who learn to use edmodo have a positive attitude towards learning mathematics. The implication of the research is for the next researcher, using edmodo media so that maximum control is needed on students. If further research is conducted with different samples, the results shown will also be different. This can be viewed from a variety of different characteristics of students that greatly affect the ability of mathematical communication.

Abstract The constructivist approach is based on the idea that knowledge can never be passed from one person to another. The only way to acquire knowledge is to create or construct them. The constructivist approach changes also the role of the teacher in the educational process, the task of them is to organize the environment so that the student himself can construct the cognitive forms that teacher wants to give him. In the paper, the nature of the constructivist approach is identified, different aspects regarding mathematics education are analysed as well as the potential impact on the development of mathematical competences in the context of sustainable development is discussed. The study process and learning methods appropriate to constructivist approach also were studied. In order to illustrate the need for a constructivist approach in mathematics education, the survey of students from Latvia University of Life Science and Technologies (LLU) and Riga Technical University (RTU) were carried out, the results of which proved that mathematics learning at universities has to be changed. The current study proved that the constructivist approach radically changes the process of teaching and learning mathematics, connecting it with daily life, rather than teaching only abstract formulas and using a creative approach to mathematical tasks solving. This study shows that using constructivist approach to the teaching of mathematics, the competences needed for sustainable development are boosted.
