The remarkable strength and durability characteristics found in lightweight alloys-based Metal Matrix Composites (MMC) assisted in enhancing their widespread use in automobile, aircraft, and marine sectors. The present study consists of utilizing a conventional stir casting setup for fabricating Aluminium-based MMCs having fly ash as reinforcement. The fly ash was reinforced with an aluminum matrix in proportions: 2, 4, and 6 % to get three different homogeneous samples of MMCs. The prepared samples were examined for microstructure and mechanical characterization. The MMCs samples exhibited successful incorporation and homogeneous dispersion of fly ash particles. The fly ash addition assisted in enhancing the hardness and decrease in strength of aluminum MMCs.

It is well known that the addition of ceramic phases in an alloy e.g. aluminum, in form of fibers or particles influences its mechanical properties. This leads to a new generation of materials, which are called metal matrix composites (MMCs). They have found a lot of application during the last twenty-five years due to their low density, high strength and toughness, good fatigue and wear resistance. Aluminum matrix composites reinforced by ceramic particles are well known for their good thermophysical and mechanical properties. As a result, during the last years, there has been a considerable interest in using aluminum metal matrix composites in the automobile industry. Automobile industry use aluminum alloy matrix composites reinforced with SiC or Al2O3 particles for the production of pistons, brake rotors, calipers and liners. However, no reference could be cited in the international literature concerning aluminum reinforced with TiB particles and Fe and Cr, although these composites are very promising for improving the mechanical properties of this metal without significantly alter its corrosion behavior. Several processing techniques have been developed for the production of reinforced aluminum alloys. This paper is concerned with the study of TiB, Fe and Cr reinforced aluminum produced by the stir-casting method.

Aluminium metal matrix composites are pretty much important in the different demanding sectors such as in the field of medicine and engineering like automobiles, aerospace, defence, dental and consumer goods. The need arises due to its huge calibre in industrial need of good materials with lighter weight, excellent properties and economical in cost demanded the researchers or scientists research on composite materials. The AMMCs or Al-MMCs consists of an apex variety of mechanical properties which is directly proportional to the chemical composition of the Aluminium matrix. To enhance strength the reinforcement plays a key role in AMMCs could be in the form of continuous/ discontinuous fibres, whiskers & particulate as the second phase depending on their applications and property requirements. In addition to it, various strength enhancers are reinforcements such as fly ash, TiC, SiC, Al2O3, TiO2, B4C etc. This paper attempts to review the different combinations in the processing of aluminium metal matrix composites along with their properties and their applications.

This work was carried out to investigate the effect of carbonized eggshells (CES) and fly ash on the microstructure, mechanical properties, wear, and corrosion characteristics of Al-Si12. The weight fraction (wt.%) of the CES particles was kept constant at 2.5 wt.%, while that of fly ash was varied at 2.5 wt.%, 5.0 wt.%, 7.5 wt.%, and 10.0 wt.%. The selected fabrication route was stir casting. The x-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis of the cast aluminum matrix composites (AMCs) revealed the presence of phases including α-aluminum, SiO2, and Si with the formation of the intermetallic CuAl2 phase. The microhardness of the cast samples increased with increasing weight fraction of the reinforcements up to the 7.5 wt.% fly ash sample. The tensile strength and compressive strength were highest for the 2.5 wt.%/CES 2.5 wt.%. Tribology studies showed that the lowest wear rate of 4.91 × 10-5 mm3/Nmm was obtained for the 2.5 wt.% fly ash sample, while the corrosion studies showed that the corrosion rate of 2.70 × 10-5 g/hr was lowest for the 2.5 wt.% fly ash as well.

Composite materials like Aluminium metal matrix composite is playing a very important role in manufacturing industries e.g. automobile and aerospace industries, due to their superior properties such as light weight, low density, high specific modulus, high fatigue strength etc., In this study Aluminium(Al 6061) is reinforced with Silicon Carbide particles and fabricated by Stir Casting Technique (vortex method). The MMC rectangular bars (samples) are prepared with Al6061 and SiC (28 µ size) as the reinforced particles by weight fraction from 0%, 5%, 10%, and 15% of SiC. The microstructure analysis and Mechanical properties like Tensile Strength, Vickers Hardness and Charpy Impact Strength were investigated on prepared specimens. It is observed that the properties are increased with increasing of reinforced specimens by weight fraction.

AbstractThe effects of micro and nano sized reinforcement particles on microstructure and mechanical properties of aluminium alloy-based metal matrix composites were investigated in this study. AlSi9Cu3 alloy was reinforced with micro and nano sized ceramic reinforcement particles at different weight fractions by using a stir casting method. The mechanical tests (hardness, three point bending) were performed to determine the mechanical properties of AlSi9Cu3 alloy-based microcomposites (AMMCs) and nanocomposites (AMMNCs). The experimental results have shown that the size and weight fraction of reinforcement particles have a strong influence on the microstructure and the mechanical properties of AlSi9Cu3 alloy-based microcomposites and nanocomposites. The relative densities of all AMMC and AMMNC samples are lower than unreinforced AlSi9Cu3 alloy due to porosity formation with the increase of weight fraction of reinforcement particles. As weight fraction increases, hardness values of AMMCs and AMMNCs increase. Maximum flexural strength can be obtained at 3.5wt.% for the AMMC sample with microsized Al2O3 particles and at 2wt.% for the AMMNC sample with nano-sized Al2O3 particles. After the weight fractions exceed these values, flexural strengths of both AMMCs and AMMNCs decrease due to clustering of Al2O3 particles.

Metal matrix composites (MMC's) have attracted the attention of researchers for quite some time. In the last 15 years, many studies have been reported in this field of MMC production through various routes. The most commonly used process for producing MMC is stir casting process whereby the reinforcement material is incorporated into the molten metal by stirring. It is a relatively low cost manufacturing process that is capable of producing high quality MMC. However, the process is associated with issues such as attaining uniform distribution of particles, wettability between particles and porosity in the MMCs. Because of these challenges, there has been continuous improvement in the process as well as the design of the furnace. In this research, an innovatively designed bottom tapping furnace has been used to produce the MMCs and the produced sample is characterized.

This paper deals with the mechanical properties in conventional heat treatment of Al (6061)-B4C-Graphite. Aluminium Metal Matrix Composites (MMC) is fabricated through two step stir casting method. The composites were fabricated with various volume percentage levels as Aluminium reinforced with (5, 10 &15%) Boron Carbide and (5,10 & 15%) of Graphite. Fabricated composites were subjected to conventional heat treatment for enhancing the mechanical properties. Influences of Graphite reinforcement on mechanical properties of Aluminum-Boron carbide composites were analyzed. The microstructure studies were also carried out. It is observed that increasing the graphite content within the aluminum matrix results in significant decrease in ductility, hardness, ultimate tensile strength. The addition of boron carbide conversely increased the hardness of the composites.
