scholarly journals The Study of Physical Properties and Analysis of Welding Parameters of A Butt Joint of C45 Steel in MIG Welding

This project shows the effect of welding variables on the mechanical properties of C45 steel. This medium carbon steel plate of 10 mm thickness welded using the Metal Inert Gas Welding. Welding current, voltage, root gap are the welding parameters. The hardness and tensile strength of weld specimen are investigated in this study. The results showed that the selected welding parameters had significant effects on the mechanical properties of the welded samples. The welded samples were cut and machined to standard configurations (dog bone sample) for tensile and hardness tests. The selected three input parameters were varied at three levels on the analogy; nine experiments were performed based on L9 array of Taguchi’s methodology, which consist three input parameters. Analysis of variance (ANOVA) was employed to find the levels of significance of input parameters. Root gap has greatest effect on tensile strength followed by welding current and voltage. Voltage has the greatest effect on hardness followed by root gap and welding current. The relative studies of machining performances on the basis of metallurgical properties are properties are prepared by the help of statistical tools, i.e. L9 Orthogonal Array, ANOVA etc.

Orbital pipe welding was often used to manufacture piping systems. In orbital pipe welding, a major challenge is the welding torch’s position during the welding process, so that additional methods are needed to overcome these challenges. This paper discusses the influence of welding sequence and welding current on distortion, mechanical properties and metallurgical observations in orbital pipe welding with SS 316L pipe square butt joints. The variation of the orbital pipe welding parameters used is welding current and welding sequence. The welding current used is 100 A, 110 A, and 120 A, while the welding sequence used is one sequence, two sequences, three sequences, and four sequences. The welding results will be analyzed from distortion measurement, mechanical properties test and metallurgical observations. Distortion measurements are made on the pipe before welding and after welding. Testing of mechanical properties includes tensile tests and microhardness tests, while metallurgical observations include macrostructure and microstructural observations. The results show that maximum axial distortion, transverse distortion, ovality, and taper occurred at a welding current of 120 A with four sequences of 445 µm, 300 µm, 195 µm, and 275 µm, respectively. The decrease in ultimate tensile strength is 51 % compared to the base metal’s ultimate tensile strength. Horizontal and vertical microhardness tests show that welding with one sequence produces the greatest microhardness value, but there is a decrease in the microhardness value using welding with two to four sequences. Orbital pipe welding results in different depths of penetration at each pipe position. The largest and smallest depth of penetration was 4.11 mm and 1.60 mm, respectively

Experiment of automatic gas tungsten arc welding of liquefied natural gas carrier Invar alloy with a thickness of .7 mm was completed, and the welding parameters were optimized, as well as microstructure and mechanical properties of the welded joint were measured and analyzed. The grain size of the area near the weld centerline was small, mainly cellular dendrites, and the grain size on both sides of the weld centerline increased gradually, mainly dendrites, whereas the grain size near fusion line was larger, and there were more columnar crystals. The heat-affected zone was composed of coarse austenite grains. Transgranular cracks were the main cracks in the welding seam. When welding current was 40 A, frequency was 120 Hz, and welding speed was 350 mm/min, tensile strength of the welded joint was 446.9 MPa, which 88.1% of the base metal’s tensile strength and 10.3% of the fracture elongation. The fracture surface of tensile specimens showed typical plastic fracture characteristics, with no obvious crack characteristics, and no eutectic liquid films were observed.

One of the greatest drawbacks to predicting the behaviour of bonded joints has been the lack of reliable data on the mechanical properties of adhesives. In this study, methods for determining mechanical properties of structural adhesive were discussed. The Young’s modulus, Poisson’s ratio and tensile strength of the adhesive were tested by dogbone specimens (bulk form) and butt joint specimens (in situ form). The shear modulus and shear strength were test by V-notched specimens (bulk form) and thick adherend lap-shear (TALS) joint specimens (in situ form). The test results show that the elastic modulus provided by the manufacturer is too low, the dogbone specimen is better than the butt joint specimen to test the tensile strength and elastic modulus and the TALS joint specimen is better than the V-notched specimen to test the shear strength.

In this work, two ternary polymer blends were prepared by mixing EP with (UP/PSR) and (PVC/PSR) respectively. Different mixing ratios were used (5, 10, 15 and 20) wt.% of the added polymers. Impact, tensile, compression, flexural and hardness tests were performed on the prepared blends. The results of testing showed that the first ternary blend A (EP/UP/PSR) records tensile strength values higher than that of the second ternary blend B (EP/ PVC/PSR). At 20wt.% of mixing, the blend B records higher impact strength than that of the blend A. There is large difference in the flexural behavior between A and B blends where the blend A records the highest value of flexural strength (F.S) at (5wt.%) while the blend B records the highest value of (F.S) at (20wt.%). From compression test, it is obvious that the values of compressive strength decrease of blend B more than that of the blend A as well as the same behavior can be obtained through the hardness test.

In the present study, the aluminum (Al) 1050–FeTiO3 composite was fabricated through accumulative roll bonding process, and the resultant mechanical properties were evaluated at different deformation cycles at ambient temperature. The effect of the addition of FeTiO3 particle on the microstructural evolution and mechanical properties of the composite during accumulative roll bonding was investigated. The Al–2, 4, and 8 vol.% FeTiO3 composites were produced by accumulative roll bonding at room temperature. The results showed improvement in the dispersions of the particles with the increase in the number of the rolling cycles. In order to study the mechanical properties, tensile and hardness tests were applied. It was observed that hardness and tensile strength improve with increasing accumulative roll bonding cycles. The microhardness and tensile strength of the final composites are significantly improved as compared to those of original raw material Al 1050 and increase with increasing volume fraction of FeTiO3, reaching a maximum of ∼75 HV and ∼169 MPa for Al–8 vol.% FeTiO3 at seventh cycle, respectively.

Laser welding–brazing of 5A06 aluminum to Ti6Al4V titanium in a butt configuration was carried out to discuss the influences of welding parameters on dissimilar joint properties. The effects of laser offset, welding speed, and laser power on the spreading length of the molten aluminum liquid, interface fracture zone width (IFZW), fracture roughness, intermetallic compounds (IMCs) thickness, and tensile strength were also investigated. The microstructure and fracture of the joint were also studied. The results show that the tensile strength of the joint is not only influenced by the thickness and type of IMCs, but also influenced by the spreading ability of the aluminum liquid, the fracture area broken at the Ti/fusing zone (FZ) interface, and the relative area of the brittle and ductile fracture in FZ. A dissimilar butt joint with an IMC thickness of 2.79 μm was obtained by adjusting the laser offset, welding speed, and laser power to 500 μm, 11 mm/s and 1130 W, respectively. The maximum tensile strength of the joint was up to 183 MPa, which is equivalent to 83% of the tensile strength of the 5A06 aluminum alloy.

Although considerable progress has been made in recent years in field of polymer welding, challenges still remain in using a friction stir welding method to join polycarbonate (PC) composites. This research provides an investigation on the effect of welding parameters (tool’s travel and rotational speeds) on mechanical properties of PC nanocomposite weld lines. PC nanocomposites were prepared with different percentages of Al2O3 nanofiller using a twin screw extruder and injection moulded as sheets in order to ease the welding. Considering various parameters and their levels, optimization of Taguchi experimental design was carried out, an L16 orthogonal standard array was selected and the effective parameter was calculated using analysis of variance of the results. The results indicated that nanoalumina percentage is the most effective parameter on the tensile strength of weld and tool’s travel speed and rotational speed are next effective parameters, respectively. According to signal-to-noise ratio, maximum weld tensile strength (89.5% of base material) is revealed when nanoalumina percentage, tool’s travel speed and tool’s rotational speed were chosen as 1 wt%, 12 mm/min and 1250 r/min, respectively.

Hard-facing welding is one of the repairing methods for increasing hard metal on the agricultural machine part surfaces that caused by the wear mechanism. To this date, the investigation of an optimized welding process parameter that could produce high hardness and wear resistance of the hard-facing layer is still being developed and performed. This paper aims to study the effects of hard-facing welding layer on mechanical properties and microstructure of hard-facing weld metal on JIS-50C carbon steel. The summarized results are as follows: (a) an increase of hard-facing layer affected to increase the hardness of the layer, (b) the hardness of the welds showed a maximum hardness of about 750 HV at a top surface of 3rd welds layers with no-buffering layer and showed the minimum hardness of about 225 HV at a base metal, (c) microstructure investigation showed that the increase of the phase that contained higher chromium, molybdenum and manganese affected the increase of the hardness and the wear resistance of the weld metal, (d) The minimum mass loss of 0.2559 mg/m could be found when a welding current of 100A, non-buffering layer and 3 layers of hard-facing weld metal were applied, and (e) the buffering layer was able to produce a sound weld metal and might not be suited for the hard-facing welding of the medium carbon steel because it produced the dilution effect that deteriorated the mechanical properties of the weld metal.

The microstructure and mechanical properties of the butt joint in high density polyethylene (HDPE) pipes were evaluated by preparing the joints with increasing the cooling time from 10 s to 70 s before pressure created for fusion of the pipes. Here, cold fusion flaws in HDPE butt joint were created with increasing the cooling time around 70 s caused by the close molecular contact followed by insufficient interdiffusion of chain segments back and forth across the wetted interface. The tensile failure mechanism of the welded pipes at different fusion time was projected based on the tensile test of dog-bone shaped, fully notched bar type as well as round U-notched specimens. The mechanical properties of the joints at different fusion time were correlated with the corresponding fracture surface morphology. The weld seam as well as tensile fracture surfaces were etched using strong oxidizing agents. The crystallinity of surface etched weld zone by potassium permanganate based etchant was found higher than unetched sample due to the higher susceptibility of amorphous phase of polyethylene with oxidizing agent. The U-notched tensile test of butt welded HDPE pipe and surface etching of the weldments provided clear delineation about the joint quality.

Spot welding involves the joining of two or more plate metals in localized areas where melting and jointure of a little volume of fabric happens from heating caused by resistance to the passage of an electrical current. This process is typically used for obtaining a lap joint of plate metal parts. In this work, stainless steels and medium carbon steel were used. Three rules for welding set-up, lowest tap on the fastening electrical device, highest % current setting on the weld management and shortest weld time setting on the weld management were adopted. Experiments conducted to show the effect of these variables on the welding diameter and tensile strength for each sample for medium carbon steel and stainless steel separately and joining both metals together by spot welding. The results show that the utmost durability was at stainless steel specimens and minimum tensile strength was at medium carbon steel specimens. Furthermore, the obtained results showed that the maximum heat generated was at stainless steel specimens and minimum heat generated values was at medium carbon steel specimens for all current dependent in this work. Meanwhile, slight effect of heat generated on the spot diameter for the current of 10.6 & 5.3 kA, and so significant effect on the spot diameter for the last current (2.3kA).
