Structural Transformation of Punjab Agriculture and its Environmental Implications

As per Economic Survey of Punjab, (2019-20), Punjab alone contributed more than 1/4 and 1/3 of the central pool of rice and th rd wheat respectively in 2018-19 and accordingly named as bread-basket of India. However, such a huge contribution was due to the structural transformation of agriculture in Punjab under the Green Revolution. Such transformation leads to intensive use of natural resources with mono-culture of wheat-paddy till today, which put a big question mark on the sustainability issue of agriculture in Punjab. The present study was exclusively based on secondary data, covering the period of 1965-66 to 2018-2019, almost 55 years. Hirschman Herfindhal index and Simpson Diversity index were used to determine the extent of concentration and diversification in the cropping pattern of Punjab agriculture. The results highlight the facts that level of diversification was declining and the level of concentration was increasing. Moreover, Compound Growth Rate (CGR) of yield was either stagnating or declining over the years. Not only this, based on the index of agriculture production, the trend values were negative since the 21 century. Accordingly, st intensive agricultural practices should be stopped, and diversification should get priority in such a way that food security is not jeopardized.

The green revolution has left a trail of civilization that is so awesome. Indonesia reached self-sufficiency in food through changes about ways of farming in the community. However, the development strategy which is the big push is gradually getting eliminates the values of local wisdom in farming activity. Farmers are directed in uniformity, from the use of the seeds, fertilizers, and pesticides. As a result, many local plant seed began to become extinct and replaced by new varieties that are sometimes incompatible with the environment. For this reason, this paper is present with the aim of seeing how the local wisdom plays a role in agricultural practices in the hamlet of Cetho, especially in terms of seedling onion. The approach used is a qualitative approach using descriptive method and the analysis of the discourse. The data used are the primary and secondary data collected through methods of the study of literature, interviews and observation. From the discussion it is known that in agricultural practices conducted by the people of Cetho hamlet is still full of local traditions that envelop. Local wisdom that exists not only related to the problem of solidarity among the people but has been rooted to the community activities in farming and its efforts to achieve environmental balance. One of them is in the manufacture and storage of onion seeds. The process, farmers choose seeds from the remaining good quality harvest, tied up and placed in a place that is in the kitchen ceiling. The goal is that the smoke from the fireplace can be about onion seeds so as to resist pest attack disease. This local wisdom has been obtained from generation to generation and practiced daily. However, it is necessary to study from the government or researchers related to onion seeds produced like this in the framework of the development of nature conservation based on local knowledge of the community.

The inventory and the analysis of the woody species preserved in the different categories of cocoa and coffee plantations showed that they are relatively diversified (presence of endemic, rare and threatened species). They also preserved high tree density and high basal areas. The young plantations are especially diversified. Their number of species,density and basal areas and diversity index are similar to those of the neighbouring old growth and secondary forests. Older plantations display a sharp decline of diversity over time. Agricultural practices in the region represent a threat in the medium term to the preservation of biodiversity.

Turmeric Cultivation is one of livelihood for the Kondh tribes of Kandhamal District of Odisha. These farmers were cultivating this crop with their traditional knowledge of crop practices without any intervention of chemical inputs. From the studies, it is found that farmers of the district were economically and educationally backward. Turmeric of Kandhamal is well known for its healing property, color, aroma etc. and received GI tag for its unique features. From the secondary data it was found that there were few public and private extension actors trying to promote organic recommended package of practices for Turmeric.  And, to boost willingness among farmers towards recommended organic Turmeric various socio-economic variables might be responsible. In this view the present study was carried out (2020-21) in Kandhamal district of Odisha to understand attitude towards recommended organic Turmeric and socio-economic variables effecting willingness to adopt organic package of practices of Turmeric. It was found that turmeric growers had medium to high level of willingness to adopt the recommended agricultural practice. And among selected socio-economic variables respondent’s total family member, Members help in family farming and adult male had negative and significantly relationship with willingness to adopt the recommended agricultural practices of organic turmeric. Private extension actors and State Horticulture Department training were continually motivating them to adopt recommended agricultural practices of organic turmeric.

Each plant species is regarded to substantially influence and thus, select for specific rhizosphere microbial populations. This is considered in the exploitation of soil microbial diversity associated with important crops, which has been of interest in modern agricultural practices for sustainable productivity. This study used PCR-DGGE (polymerase chain reaction - denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis) in order to obtain an initial assessment of the bacterial and fungal communities associated in bulk soil and rhizospheres of different mungbean genotypes under natural field conditions. Integrated use of multivariate analysis and diversity index showed plant growth stage as the primary driver of community shifts in both microbial groups while rhizosphere effect was found to be less discrete in fungal communities. On the other hand, genotype effect was not discerned but not inferred to be absent due to possible lack of manifestations of differences among genotypes based on tolerance to drought under non-stressed environment, and due to detection limits of DGGE. Sequence analysis of prominent members further revealed that Bacillus and Arthrobacter species were dominant in bacterial communities whereas members of Ascomycota and Basidiomycota were common in fungal communities of mungbean. Overall, fungal communities had higher estimated diversity and composition heterogeneity, and were more dynamic under plant growth influence, rhizosphere effect and natural environmental conditions during mungbean growth in upland field. These primary evaluations are prerequisite to understanding the interactions between plant and rhizosphere microorganisms with the intention of employing their potential use for sustainable crop production.

The Plantation Network has a land area of ​​375 ha. Population which is directly proportional to the necessities of life, one of which is in the food sector, has made the government take the initiative to meet the needs and welfare of the community with productive agricultural land and fields. The data includes secondary data on 10-year rainfall from Depati Parbo and Kayu Aro Station and 10-year climatology from Kayu Aro Climatology Station. The calculation method used is the rainfall intensity Average method, Evapotranspiration modification Penman method, Debit danalan DR.FJ Mock method, cropping patterns, and irrigation water needs. Related to the calculation of 6 alternative cropping patterns with different types of plants and different initial planting plans by making comparisons with the existing discharge factor (Q80). Obtained that the cropping pattern is very possible, namely using the cropping pattern PADI-PADI-PALAWIJA. The most efficient and optimal planting pattern is that this cropping system consists of PADI-PADI-ON with large water demand in tertiary plots (NFR tertiary plots) producing 0 - 1,308 ltr / sec/ha with a maximum of 1,308 ltr / ha / February II, while the need for irrigation water in the intake (DR intake) ranges from 0 - 1,615 ltr sec/ha with a maximum of 1,615 ltr / sec/ha in February II. The available debit and debit in the Irrigation Network Planning Mark is very abundant with the mainstay discharge (Q80) for irrigation, the maximum available debit (Q80) can occur in November with 202,207 ltr / sec/ha and the minimum in August with 115,012 ltr / sec / Ha. Based on the results of the discharge and water above, it can be determined about the ratio of water/air equilibrium between discharge and water Q80 and the need for irrigation water requires a large/adequate surplus.

Agriculture and its allied activities are the main sources of livelihood in India. Jammu and Kashmir (J&K), a union territory of India is also an agrarian state. More than 70 percent of its population is directly engaged in this sector. Geographically, J&K lies in the Himalayan region and has a huge variation in agro-climate diversity. The climate here varies from sub-tropical in the Jammu division to temperate in the Kashmir division. These climatic variations make it suitable for performing varied cultivation. The productivity of all the major crops in the region has increased manifold since the green revolution but now it is more or less stagnating. Hence, it is useful to examine the productivity of major crops in the union territory. The present paper is an attempt to highlight the overall agricultural production of major food grains crop of J&K from 2000-2001 to 2018-2019. The main focus of the paper is to analyzes the variations in agricultural production and productivity of major crops at the district level in the Jammu division for the period 2010-2011 to 2016-2017. The study is based on secondary data and is empirical in nature. The co-efficient of Variation technique has been used to find out the variations in production and productivity of agricultural crops of the jammu division of J&K. The results show that the overall agricultural production of food grains crops in the region increases over years.It also shows tremendous variations in the production and productivity of the different crops across districts. These variations indicate that there is a need to adopt some specific strategies at the district level for the sustainable development of agricultural growth in the state.

Climate change is a global problem affecting agricultural production, a good adaptation strategy for this phenomena should be sought for increase agricultural production. The study was conducted in Nigeria to assess the Impact of Climate Change on root and tuber crops production among farmers in Nigeria. Secondary data were used for the study, they were collected from NRCRI Umudike and other individual publications. The result shows that climate change had negative impact on root and tubers crops production including potato. Adaptation of Agriculture to climate change in the areas of crop and animal production, post harvest activities and capacity building, divers friction of livelihood sources through the use of different farming methods and improved agricultural practices will help to reduce the impact of climate change. Examples are establishment of forestry, generation of improved and disease resistance crop varieties addition of value into agricultural products and post harvest activities for climate change adaptation and sustainable development.

Purpose Motivated by claims that the International Integrated Reporting Framework (IRF) can be used to comply with Directive 2014/95/EU (the EU Directive) on non-financial and diversity disclosure, the purpose of this study is to examine whether companies can comply with corporate reporting laws using de facto standards or frameworks. Design/methodology/approach The authors adopted an interpretivist approach to research along with current regulatory studies that aim to investigate business compliance with the law using private sector standards. To support the authors’ arguments, publicly available secondary data sources were used, including newsletters, press releases and websites, reports from key players within the accounting profession, public documents issued by the European Commission and data from corporatergister.com. Findings To become a de facto standard or framework, a private standard-setter requires the support of corporate regulators to mandate it in a specific national jurisdiction. The de facto standard-setter requires a powerful coalition of actors who can influence the policymakers to allow its adoption and diffusion at a national level to become mandated. Without regulatory support, it is difficult for a private and voluntary reporting standard or framework to be adopted and diffused. Moreover, the authors report that the <IRF> preferences stock market capitalism over sustainability because it privileges organisational sustainability over social and environmental sustainability, emphasises value creation over holding organisations accountable for their impact on society and the environment and privileges the entitlements of providers of financial capital over other stakeholders. Research limitations/implications The authors question the suitability of the goals of both the <IRF> and the EU Directive during and after the COVID-19 crisis. The planned changes to both need rethinking as we head into uncharted waters. Moreover, the authors believe that the people cannot afford any more reporting façades. Originality/value The authors offer a critical analysis of the link between the <IRF> and the EU Directive and how the <IRF> can be used to comply with the EU Directive. By questioning the relevance of the compliance question, the authors advance a critique about the relevance of these and other legal and de facto frameworks, particularly considering the more pressing needs that must be met to address the economic, social and environmental implications of the COVID-19 crisis.

A study was carried out in 24 Upazillas of 12 districts of Bangladesh with a view to identifying risks, vulnerabilities and impacts of different types of natural disasters commonly occurring in Bangladesh with respect to agricultural production and sustainable agricultural development. Three districts were selected from each category of the disaster viz., drought, saline, river flood and flash flood prone. Two Upazillas were selected randomly from each district by considering the homogeneity (climate, agricultural practices, agricultural production, disaster risks, livelihood system, population, etc.) of the particular disaster affected areas. Of the four disasters, drought prone area covers the highest net cultivable area (NCA) measuring about 121 ha. Flash flood, salinity and river flood prone area covers approximately 115, 60 and 30 ha, respectively. The dominant cropping pattern in drought areas is Fallow-T.Aman-Wheat. In saline areas, it is Fallow-T. Aman- Pulse while in flood areas, it is Fallow-T.Aman- HYV Boro. Trend analysis shows that overall cropped area decreased by 1% in all disaster prone areas from 1984 - 2013. The highest decrease in cropped area was found for pulse in both drought (13%) and river flood (14%) areas. In saline and flash flood areas, it was for spice and potato, respectively. Among 72 farmers, 85% is vulnerable to drought, 90% to salinity, 69% to river flood and 95% to flash flood. Medium high land was found to be the most vulnerable for agricultural production in all disaster prone areas. Due to vulnerability to disasters, medium high land remains fallow in saline (83%), river flood (51%) and flash flood (31%) areas. Abstract The impact of modern agriculture on the evolutionary trajectory of plant pathogens is a central question for crop sustainability. The Green Revolution replaced traditional rice landraces with high-yielding varieties, creating a uniform selection pressure that allows measuring the effect of such intervention. In this study, we analyzed a unique historical pathogen record to assess the impact of a major resistance gene, Xa4, in the population structure of Xanthomonas oryzae pv. oryzae (Xoo) collected in the Philippines in a span of 40 years. After the deployment of Xa4 in the early 1960s, the emergence of virulent pathogen groups was associated with the increasing adoption of rice varieties carrying Xa4, which reached 80% of the total planted area. Whole genomes analysis of a representative sample suggested six major pathogen groups with distinctive signatures of selection in genes related to secretion system, cell-wall degradation, lipopolysaccharide production, and detoxification of host defense components. Association genetics also suggested that each population might evolve different mechanisms to adapt to Xa4. Interestingly, we found evidence of strong selective sweep affecting several populations in the mid-1980s, suggesting a major bottleneck that coincides with the peak of Xa4 deployment in the archipelago. Our study highlights how modern agricultural practices facilitate the adaptation of pathogens to overcome the effects of standard crop improvement efforts.
