          The main goal of this research is to know and display the extent in which social media sites and platforms affect the voting behavior of the university students in the Kurdistan region during general elections, either to participate in the election or to vote for a specific candidate or political party. It also explores how the students participate and interact with the electoral messages and information that are published on social media platforms. This research is a political communication study, which relies on the survey method utilizing questionnaire form as a tool for data collection from the participants. The questionnaire form was designed and implemented online through Google Form and was sent to the participants through Email, Messenger, Viber and Whatsup, to the university student in different universities in the Kurdistan region. As such, 344 persons of the sample have filled up the questionnaire form in one week from 10 to 16 August 2021. The results of the study were displayed in tables and were analyzed through descriptive method, in addition to the use of SPSS statistics software to find correlation between the two main variables of the study.           One of the most prominent results of this study was that only a small proportion of the participants (almost 27%) are influenced by social media to change their voting behavior such as deciding to vote or no, and voting for a specific candidate or political party. Another noticeable result was that the majority of the participants with almost (50%) do not trust the promises and speeches of the candidates and political parties that are published on social media platforms.

The rise of hoaxes circulating on social media makes students as active social media users vulnerable to distribute hoaxes. The study used the model of information behavior by Wilson (1996) to examine information behaviors of university students in combating hoaxes on social media. Using a qualitative method, data collection was conducted through focus groups discussions with 14 students of Syiah Kuala University. The results showed that the information behaviors performed by the university students were not adequate to combat hoaxes. The critical attitude by not easily trusting information on social media was not accompanied by sufficient will and abilities to verify information they received from social media. Information dissemination behavior without verification was also found in this study. The results of this study also indicated that passive attention and search were the most dominant information behaviors among students. The results also showed that low self-efficacy encourage students to be reluctant and difficult to conduct information searches for verification. This study suggested that the model of information behaviour by Wilson (1996) was relevant to discuss students’ information behavior to combat hoaxes on social media. These findings are important to develop a social media literacy model for university students to fight against hoaxes on social media. Maraknya hoaks yang beredar di media sosial menjadikan mahasiswa sebagai pengguna media sosial aktif rentan menjadi penyebar hoaks. Penelitian menggunakan model perilaku informasi oleh Wilson (1996) untuk melihat perilaku informasi mahasiswa dalam menghadapi hoaks di media sosial. Dengan menggunakan metode kualitatif, pengumpulan data dilakukan dengan focus groups discussion terhadap 14 orang mahasiswa Universitas Syiah Kuala. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan perilaku informasi mahasiswa dalam menghadapi hoaks belum mumpuni. Sikap kritis dengan tidak mudah mempercayai informasi di media sosial, ternyata tidak disertai kemauan dan kemampuan verifikasi informasi yang memadai. Perilaku penyebaran informasi tanpa verifikasi juga masih ditemukan. Hasil studi ini juga mengindikasikan bahwa perilaku perhatian dan pencarian pasif adalah perilaku yang paling dominan di kalangan mahasiswa. Hasil studi menunjukkan bahwa self-efficacy yang rendah menyebabkan mahasiswa enggan dan sulit melakukan pencarian informasi untuk verifikasi. Studi ini menunjukkan bahwa model perilaku informasi oleh Wilson (1996) relevan untuk membahas perilaku informasi mahasiswa dalam menghadapi hoaks di media sosial. Hasil studi ini penting untuk mengembangkan model literasi media sosial di kalangan mahasiswa untuk menangkal hoaks.


Social media has been proved as wild card for its role in election campaign across the globe. It has been used for general election of India in year 2014 and year 2019 by political parties for election campaign. Thus social media provides opportunity for electoral prediction. Users from India use regional languages in addition to English language on social media. Multilingual data likely to give better prediction compared to single language data. Affect analysis gives deeper insight compared to sentiment analysis. This research study aims to predict voting behavior for 2019 general election of India using affect analysis of multilingual tweets. Three languages namely English, Hindi and Gujarati are used for this study. Volume-based method and machine learning algorithm based method are two approaches widely used in literature for electoral prediction. In this research study hybrid approach is used along with consideration of ratio of positive count and negative count of tweets. Experiment result shows efficacy of the proposed approach.

    The aim of the study was to identify the reasons for using Whatsapp and Snapchat as recognizedby female students and to identify the cultural consequencesof the use of Whatsapp on the behavior of the university students in respect to social and knowledge field, and to identify the cultural consequencesof the use of Snapchat in respect to cultural and educational field and identify the statistically significance differences of the views among the female university students, which are related to the variables of the study: the stage of study and the number of hours of use. the researcher used the descriptive survey approach rely on a questionnaire that consisted of (58) sentences distributed according to the fields of the study, it was applied to a sample of (503) female students of College of Education at King Saud University. Preliminary data of the study showed that 33.2% of the sample used social media daily for more than 6 hours. The study found that the most important reasons for using Whatsapp is to communicate with family, friends and entertainment. They use Snapchat for entertainment, to learn about the cultures of other peoples and to follow up the influential people with experience, and of the cultural consequencesof using Whatsapp on the behavior of the female students in the social field are spreading rumors and mislead others through unreliable advertisements, and in the field of knowledge that Being preoccupied with Whatsapp messages reduces focus on task performance and facilitates the dissemination of ideas easily, and from the cultural consequencesof using Snapchat on the behavior of the female students in the cultural field, the predominance of entertainment and formal interests among female students and its role in dissemination of values contrary to our Islamic values and customs and in the field of education Students are seeing Snapchat as a tool to gain fame and show off and brag about. Given the importance of the role played by the social media in developing the social and intellectual mobility among the female university students, the researcher recommends to pay particular attention to this age group for their keen interest in knowledge to enable them to improve their skills according to their aspirations, thus contributing to the development of their society.   ، ، ، ،

Over the last decade, extensive literature has been published regarding social media effects on real-life political participation. Many argue that social media stimulates online and offline political participation. This study investigates how online political activities impact political efficacy and real-life political participation among university students in rural Pakistan. In addition, this study also sheds light on the relationship between political activities and political awareness. We conducted an online survey of ( N = 200) male and female undergraduate and graduate students from the University of Narowal, Pakistan. We used Qualtrics software to distribute our survey among students for data-collection purposes. The results reveal that the majority of the students use social media for political awareness and information. Political efficacy is significantly based on online political participation. In addition to that, social media is a vital platform for netizens to participate in real-life political activities. In conclusion, the findings of the study suggest that online political activities strongly correlate to political awareness and offline political participation. In rural areas of Pakistan, the younger generations are very active on social media to participate in online and offline political happenings.

The main objective of the research study was to know the usage pattern of cyber communication by the universities students of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP). It was a descriptive and survey analytical research. The population of the study was all universities students of KP. 800 students were selected from 6 universities of KP. The collected data were processed, tabulated, explained and interpreted through some statistical tools i.e. tables, percentages and t-test. The major findings showed that university students are regular users of cyber communication. Most of them use internet and social media (SM) more than two hours per day. A big chunk of the university students uses it for the education and entertainment purposes. The findings also revealed that there is a difference between genders in using cyber communication. In the light of the said findings, certain major recommendations were made in order to achieve the maximum benefits of the study.

PurposeSocial media experience a rapid rise in recent years and steep into almost every aspect of people's lives by altering their lifestyles and creating an impact on their wellbeing. The purpose of the present study is to examine the influence of SNSs on life satisfaction among university students by first exploring what are the key gratifications which motivates them to engage in SNSs and then focusing on the psychological outcomes including social overload and social benefit from using SNSs that affects life satisfaction among the university students.Design/methodology/approachTheory of social influence and uses and gratifications theory were used in this study to examine the motivations for using SNSs, and the impact of psychological outcomes associated with SNSs usage, i.e. social benefit and social overload on life satisfaction among university students of Pakistan. Partial least squares-structural equation modeling is used to analyze the data.FindingsThe outcomes indicate that the need for maintaining interpersonal interconnectivity, entertainment value and social enhancement value derives the students' participation in social networking sites through which they encounter social benefit and social overload. The presence of social benefit enhances life satisfaction while social overload results in decreasing life satisfaction of students. Using social networking sites influences life satisfaction in the presence of social overload and social benefit while there is no direct influence of social networking sites on life satisfaction was evidenced.Research limitations/implicationsThe present study investigated the needs that drive the use of social media through the lens of UGT & Social influence approach. The other potential determinants of social media usage intention should be analyzed by employing variables of the other models.In this study social media was examined as a general platform used by the university students of Pakistan. In future researches the driving needs should be examined in the context of specific social networking sites.Practical implicationsThe presented findings embraces the implications for the authorities of higher education institutions and policy makers as it provides the useful insights about student 2019s motivations and participation behavior in SNSs which would help in developing strategies for desirable results.Social implicationsEducational institutions can utilize the research findings by incorporating social media tools in the academic system, student's interaction with their mentors will lead towards enhanced involvement of students and intellectual skills along with upgraded academic performance which will positively influence life satisfaction of the students.Originality/valueThe scarcity of findings was observed in the local environment specifically in the context of SNSs usage and well-being of the higher education students. This study addresses the motivational factors of SNSs usage and their psychological outcomes simultaneously and focused on the investigation of social media usage drivers and its outcomes among the university students of Pakistan.
