Abstract: Childhood obesity is one of the serious public health problems. Data from the World Health Organization in 2013 showed that about 42 million children were categorized as overweight and obese. Obesity is correlated with cardiovascular diseases. Apolipoprotein B is one of the solid predictors to diagnose cardiovascular disease in developing countries. This study aimed to determine the correlation between body mass index and Apolipoprotein B levels in overweight and obese adolescents. This was an analytical observational study with a cross sectional design. This study was participated by 23 overweight and obese adolescents. The results showed that the mean level of BMI in overweight and obese adolescents was 32 (SD±4.235) kg/m2, ApoB was 94,13 mg/dL (SD±19.770). The Spearman’s rank correlation test showed a significance level (P) = 0.587 and the correlations value (r) = 0,120 between body mass index and Apolipoprotein B levels. Conclusion: There was no significant correlation between BMI and ApoB in overweight and obese adolescents. Albeit, some of the overweight and obese adolescents have moderate risk to suffer from cardiovascular diseases in the future.   Introduction: As people age, physical changes, such as complete tooth loss, can occur. The therapy for complete tooth loss is to wear complete dentures (CDs). However, this can affect patients’ body mass index (BMI) and overall health, especially in patients who are elderly. BMI is an indicator that is often used to determine a person’s nutritional status.   Objective: The aim of this study was to analyze the effect of wearing a new set of full upper and lower dentures affects the BMI of elderly patients, one month after insertion at Dental Hospital of Dentistry Faculty, Trisakti University.   Method: This was an observational analytic study with a cross-sectional design. The subjects of this study were 31 elderly patients (according to the World Health Organization [WHO] age classification).   Result: Of the 31 elderly patients studied, 7 had an unstable or fluctuating BMI, 12 had a stable BMI from the beginning of CD insertion, 4 showed a consistent increase in BMI, and 2 showed a consistent decrease in BMI but remained in the normal BMI range. Using Spearman’s rank correlation coefficient, the result was shown to be significant (p=0.00), which means there was a strong correlation between CD use and change in BMI (0.76–0.99).   Conclusion: It can be concluded that elderly patients at Dental Hospital of Dentistry Faculty, Trisakti University who are wearing CDs encounter a significant change in BMI. Most of the subjects reached a normal BMI by one month after CD insertion, caused by an increased ability to masticate effectively.

Summary Introduction: Hyperplasia of the pharyngeal tonsil is one of the main causes of mouth breathing, and accurate diagnosis of this alteration is important for proper therapeutic planning. Therefore, studies have been conducted in order to provide information regarding the procedures that can be used for the diagnosis of pharyngeal obstruction. Objective: To verify the correlation between nasopharyngoscopy and cephalometric examinations in the diagnosis of pharyngeal tonsil hyperplasia. Method: This was a cross-sectional, clinical, experimental, and quantitative study. Fifty-five children took part in this study, 30 girls and 25 boys, aged between 7 and 11 years. The children underwent nasofibropharyngoscopic and cephalometric evaluation to determine the grade of nasopharyngeal obstruction. The Spearman's rank correlation coefficient at the 5% significance level was used to verify the correlation between these exams. Results: In the nasopharyngoscopy evaluation, most children showed grade 2 and 3 hyperplasia of the pharyngeal tonsil, which was followed by grade 1. In the cephalometry assessment, most children showed grade 1 hyperplasia of the pharyngeal tonsil, which was followed by grade 2. A statistically significant regular positive correlation was observed between the exams. Conclusion: It was concluded that the evaluation of the pharyngeal tonsil hyperplasia could be carried out by fiber optic nasopharyngoscopy and cephalometry, as these examinations were regularly correlated. However, it was found that cephalometry tended to underestimate the size of the pharyngeal tonsil relative to nasopharyngoscopy.

CONTEXT AND OBJECTIVE: Increasing obesity is starting to occur among Brazilians. The aim of this study was to investigate the weight and length of children under two years of age in relation to sociodemographic variables and according to whether they were breastfed. DESIGN AND SETTING: Cross-sectional randomized study conducted in 2004-2005, based on the declaration of live births (SINASC) in Campinas, Brazil. METHODS: 2,857 mothers of newborns were interviewed and answered a questionnaire seeking socioeconomic and breastfeeding information. The newborns' weights and lengths were measured at the end of the interviews and the body mass index was calculated. Percentiles (< 15 and > 85) and Z-scores (< -1 and > +1) were used for classification based on the new growth charts recommended by WHO (2006). The log-rank test, multiple linear regression and binomial test (Z) were used. The statistical significance level used was 5%. RESULTS: The predominant social level was class C. The median for exclusive breastfeeding was 90 days; 61.25% of the children were between P15 and P85 for body mass index and 61.12% for length, respectively. Children whose mothers studied for nine to eleven years and children whose mothers were unemployed presented lower weight. Children whose mothers worked in health-related professions presented lower length when correlated with breastfeeding. CONCLUSION: The breastfeeding, maternal schooling and maternal occupation levels had an influence on nutrition status and indicated that obesity is occurring in early childhood among the infants living in the municipality.

The study investigated changes in the prevalence of obesity, sedentary behavior (SB) and physical inactivity (PI) in adolescents. Two cross-sectional studies were analyzed, 2010 and 2017, with probabilistic samples from students (328 and 366, respectively) in 12 municipal schools in Niterói, RJ. Obesity was classified based on body mass index (BMI = weight / height2) Z score values ≥ +2, according to the World Health Organization criteria. The weight classification was made with body mass index (BMI = weight/height2), the SB for those with some screen behavior (television, video game) for ≥ 2 hours/day and IF those who performed <300 min / week moderate to intense physical activity. The comparison between the studies was based on the chi-square test (categorical variables) and Student's t test (continuous variables). The prevalence of obesity increased in boys (6.2% to 15.6% p <0.001) and decreased in girls (8.4% to 6.9% p = 0.035). The frequency of SB decreased from (90.7% to 67.7% p <0.001) in boys and from (90.3 to 52.8% p <0.001) in girls and the PI did not change in boys and increased in girls (84.6% to 89.9% p <0.001). The changes observed were sex-dependent, with boys more vulnerable to increased obesity, girls more PI and both sexes less SB in the investigated period.
