Recently, bioengineering has been approached as one of the slope stabilizations techniques as it is inexpensive compared to the mechanical stabilization technique. However, numbers of slope failure still reoccur due to the limitation of the bioengineering technique knowledge. Proper bioengineering material and methods must be carefully selected to overcome the problem. The objectives of this research are to determine the physical and mechanical properties of soil with Vetiver Grass roots as well as the root properties of the Vetiver Grass since these grass types have been applied widely for slope stabilization. The physical properties of soil lab tests have been determined such as compaction test, Atterberg limits test and sieve analysis test. The mechanical properties of soil with and without root grasses have been carried out through the shear box test. For the identification of the root properties of Vetiver Grass, the root morphology and the diameter of the root has been identified. The results for the lab tests conducted showed that the soil with roots have a higher shear strength compared to soil without roots included with FOS (Factor of Safety) calculation proving that the soil with the aid of Vetiver Grass will be effective in retaining soil.

Abstract In this paper, the hydraulic sedimentary model was established to investigate the effects of dry beach slope on the sedimentary characteristics of tailings, and the sand column model was built to investigate the effects of seepage erosion on the physical and mechanical properties of sedimentary tailings under unsteady seepage. The results show that the slope of dry beach have a great effect on the sedimentary characteristics of tailings, the average particle size of tailings decreases along the slope of dry beach, and the larger the slope, the more obvious the stratification of the tailings. The migration of fine-grained tailings caused by seepage erosion increases the permeability of the tailings and reduces the shear strength of the tailings. After seepage erosion, the average particle size of 1#tailings sample, 2#tailings sample and 3#tailings sample increased by 6.4%, 12.0% and 2.4% respectively, the hydraulic conductivity of 1# tailings sample, 2# tailings sample and 3# tailings increased by 27.2%,17.9%, and 15.3% respectively after internal erosion, and the shear strength of 1#tailings sample, 2#tailings sample and 3#tailings sample tailings sample decreased by 20.9 %, 15.1% and 12.4% respectively.

The goal of the measurement of the tractor ZTS 164 45 equipped with digital electrohydraulical control EHR-D BOSCH during ploughing with ploughs KUHN (4 bottoms) and 5 PHX 35 (5 bottoms) was to obtain time dependent states of pressure in the hydraulic system of the three point hitch of tractor. From the point of view of comparison of obtained results testing conditions were determinated with respect to physical and mechanical properties of soil such as soil volume mass, soil humidity, penetration resistance and shear resistance of soil. Beyond these measurements also measurements of operation parameters as a&nbsp;ploughing depth, ploughing width, working speed and fuel consumption were accomplished. The measured results of physical and mechanical properties of soil show big content of loam elements and stones in the soil. Simultaneously the measured results of the operation parameters of the ploughing sets confirmed that the ploughs KUHN and 5 PHX 35 are suitable for tractor ZTS 164 45. Based on the measured results there is a possibility to infer following conclusions: Control system of the three point hitch offers a reliable function. Hydraulic circuit is equipped by an improper distributor which causes pressure peaks which are corres-<br />ponding with safety valve adjustment. Hydraulic circuit has a&nbsp;low conductive resistance. Loading of tractor body is higher when using mounted plough than with semi mounted plough.

In order to study the influence of modified polypropylene (PP) fiber on the physical and mechanical properties of curing sludge, the same amount of cement and different content of polypropylene fiber were mixed into the sludge. Unconfined compressive strength tests, water content tests and shear strength tests were carried out on different specimens with different curing time. The results show that the sludge curing effect is markedly improved by the addition of the polypropylene fiber. As to the curing sludge with the same curing time, when the content of the polypropylene fiber increases, the unconfined compressive strength and the cohesive strength greatly increase, and the internal frictional angle decreases.

Physical and mechanical properties of rocks are the fundamental factors affecting the slope stability, the rock physical and mechanical properties of the Luming molybdenum mine were tested and analyzed in the laboratory. The results can provide us the basic data and reference to do numerical simulation and physical simulation of slope stability. The experimental results showed that: the greater the depth of rock of Luming molybdenum mine, the greater the density becomes,so as the freeze-thaw coefficient; the rock strength complies with the general rule; uniaxial tensile strength of dried rocks is much larger than water-saturated rocks; various rocks compressive strength σ3 rose up with σ1 rising; the shear strength of the rocks containing weak structure surface is far less than the shear strength of the intact rocks.

Abstract Jabon (Anthocephalus cadamba) laminas were impregnated with polystyrene and reached 21.2% polymer loading. The laminas were manufactured for three-layer glued laminated timber (glulam) using isocyanate glue with glue spread 280 g/m2 and cold-press process. For comparison purposes, untreated glulam as control and also solid wood were prepared. The physical-mechanical properties were evaluated according to the Japanese Agricultural Standard (JAS) 234-2003. The results showed that the color of glulam was not different from polystyrene glulam. The density of polystyrene glulam was higher than untreated glulam and solid wood, but the moisture content was lower than the other. The product kinds of solid wood, untreated glulam, and polystyrene glulam did not affect shear strength and modulus of rupture (MOR), while the modulus of elasticity (MOE) of untreated glulam and hardness of polystyrene glulam were the highest values and the other products were not different one each other. Both kinds of glulam fulfilled the Japanese standard in terms of moisture content, MOR, and delamination in hot water, but MOE and shear strength did not. Regarding its advantages, polystyrene glulam could be further developed using a higher wood density.

Bintan Island is a part of Riau Islands Province. On this island, the capital city is Tanjungpinang. The compliance of public facilities such as landfill waste is a priority in this city. Landfill design that suitable in this area is a sanitary landfill system. The soil layer uses to cover the waste in this landfill system. The closure did gradually avoid the disruption of waste processing. The type of soil for its landfill cover has to be able to control the leachate. It controlled by the permeability of the soil. The methods used in this study are the analysis of the physical and mechanical properties of soil. Rock and soil samples are obtained systematically through trenching. Sampling-based on changes in physical properties of soil that reflect its mechanical properties. A probabilistic approach used to solve the problems and to get accurate results. The geomorphology of the study area divided into four units. They are very flat terrain, flat terrain, slightly steep hills, and steep hills. The sample used for the study is undisturbed soil. Analysis of the physical and mechanical properties of soil shows the types of soil, such as SW, GM, MH-OH, and CH. However, MH is the most dominant type of soil. Each of the soil types represents a certain degree of weathering. The degree of weathering in the study area varies from the III degree to VI degrees. Rocks are weathering form clay mineral, which compiles the soil. Clay mineral in the soil layer is varied from quartz, illite, kaolinite, gibbsite, goethite, and hematite—the impact of the swelling of clay. The swelling of clay in the study area ranged from low to high. The properties and composition of the soil are affected by the permeability value.

Abstract Field testing is often a very reliable way to determine the mechanical properties of soil materials and in some cases the most appropriate and unique way to obtain accurate measurements. Geotechnical engineers and engineering geologists perform geotechnical investigations to obtain information on the physical and mechanical properties of soil and rock underlying (and sometimes adjacent to) a site to design earthworks and foundations for proposed structures. The object of the present work is the recording of the geotechnical data of the center and districts of the city of Larissa, the knowledge of which is necessary for the construction and erection of construction works, as well as the characteristics and points that need special attention in each area. Finally important conclusions refer to the construction culture, that project authorities and contractors should draw on, accordingly.
