Relevance. The article discusses the problems of the transition of universities to a distance learning format. The transfer of universities to a remote format due to the spread of the COVID-19 virus allowed students to continue to receive training, which varied significantly due to technologies, the choice of which was determined by the current capabilities of educational institutions. The article analyzes the result of a study of the attitude and assessment of teachers and students organizing and conducting training outside the educational institution with the use of distance technologies. The purpose of the study is to identify the features of teaching and learning in a distance format in higher education during the spread of a new coronavirus infection. The objectives of the study are to identify factors that have influenced the quality of the implementation of educational programs in full in the electronic information and educational environment. The results of the study. A serious influence of the distance learning format on the quality of the teacher-student interaction was revealed (it has significantly decreased), which is undoubtedly one of the factors that reduce studentsʼ motivation to learn. For many respondents, distance learning and teaching was the first experience of a distance learning format, and therefore the attitude towards it is rather complicated. A significant scatter in the format of the classes, their completeness and content within the framework of distance learning, the low proportion of the teaching staff prepared for its implementation, and the generally low level of technical, methodological and legal support show that the majority of Russian universities are not ready to introduce distance learning. The transition to an online training format caused the majority of respondents discomfort and negative emotional experiences.

AbstractFor many years, technology has been applied to improve the quality of language learning and teaching. However, the outbreak of COVID-19 pandemic accelerated the integration of technology in different language learning contexts. The sudden shift to online teaching faced educators with an array of challenges they had not experienced before. In particular, the teachers encountered many barriers with the online assessment of the students. To shed more light on what passed, following a qualitative mode of inquiry, the present study set out to find out how a group of 20 Iranian English language teachers at Persian Gulf University faced with the online assessment challenges posed by COVID-19. For this aim, the researchers conducted in-depth semi-structured retrospective interviews with the teachers at different times throughout the course. In addition, the teachers were asked to provide a narrative account of how they responded to the crisis. The analysis of the findings showed that after the shift to online assessment, the teachers initially faced with serious pedagogical, technical, administrative, and affective barriers, but as the course proceeded, they could adjust their practice with the new situation. However, the teachers recounted problems that still remained and negatively affected their practice. Overall, the study discusses that to improve the online assessment in the post-COVID-19 era several technological, pedagogical, and administrative measures should be taken into account. These would further improve the integration of the technology in the pedagogical context in the long run.

The publication of the last 2018 issue of Studies in Second Language Learning and Teaching marks the end of the eighth year of existence of the journal. It has been a successful year for a number of reasons. First, we have concluded the transition to our electronic platform, which has made the processing of submissions much more manageable. Second, we have published two state-of-the-art special issues, one dedicated to emotions in language learning and the other to language learning strategies. Both of them carry papers by leading scholars in the two respective domains and I am positive that they will contribute to further improvement of the standing of the journal in the field. Third, we have commissioned special issues guest-edited by well-known scholars for several years to come. Fourth, we have seen a major rise in the number of submissions, and, even more importantly, an overall increase in the quality of the manuscripts. Fifth, as can be seen from the indices included in Scopus, the journal continues to have a considerable impact on the field and this impact is very likely to grow in the future. At the same time, there are many problems that we have to face, such as the delays in handling papers caused by the spike in submissions, the need to strike a balance between special issues and regular issues, or the major difficulty in finding suitable reviewers. We are sure, however, that these difficulties are simply challenges that need to be overcome and we are committed to making the journal grow and become even more influential in the field.

This paper examines the students’ perception on quality of MBA program and the relationship between the perceived quality and satisfaction of the students with the MBA program. For this study 250 respondents, 50 each from five universities, pursuing MBA degree were taken as sample and surveyed through structured questionnaire in the year 2016. Five variables are taken as the major quality indicators: quality of curriculum, faculty, employability, infrastructure, and reputation. For data analysis, descriptive, analytical and inferential techniques have been employed. The perceptions of the students are analyzed against the five quality dimensions where significant relationship is seen between the satisfaction of the students and faculty, employability, infrastructure and reputation. The study observed that a good brand name is often associated with quality and it is likely to think that good reputation is bound with good curriculum, faculty, employability and infrastructure. Hence, educational institutions should work on building good rapport in the market as it exerts strong effect on the overall satisfaction of students. This can be promoted by highlighting graduate employability and by indicating the career success and development of the graduates and alumni. The finding also revealed that the factors do affect the students’ perception and among the selected five quality dimensions ‘reputation’ is seen as the most influential factor in forming students perception and ‘curriculum’ is seen as the least influential factor as there is not much difference in curriculum provided by different universities.

Journal of Business and Social Sciences Research, Vol. 2, No. 1 & 2, pp. 15-26

Infocommunication technologies are increasingly intruding into the learning process, including higher education. The widespread access to omnifarious information resources from various telecommunication devices — computers, tablets, smartphones — taking into account the relatively high coverage of the territory with wireless communications, provides the necessary conditions for creating individual learning opportunities based on objective indicators of learning material and mastering the required skills and abilities. You must take into account already existing experience and established tradition, the ability to perceive new and prepared to use a variety of modern ICT solutions to educational institutions, not only students, but also their teachers as well as the willingness of the relevant learning and teaching materials. To implement this, it is necessary to form not only educational-methodical materials, but also an adequate control and measuring environment, which allows obtaining objective assessments characterizing the process of studying the discipline and the quality of mastering the material. For this purpose, the authors propose to create a model of an intellectual lecture-presentation with a built-in testing subsystem, in which there is a possibility of a step-by-step study of the educational material with the fixation of the quality of mastering the material in the form of certain indicators. Such indicators may include: the time spent on each element (slide) of the course, taking into account the number of reference to this element; the dynamics of answers to test questions — an indicator reflecting the speed of mastering the educational material; the number of correct and incorrect answers, as well as the number of missed questions when performing tests — an indicator reflecting the volume of assimilation of educational material, etc. The analysis of the collected quantitative indicators allows you to determine the dynamics of the study of the course and build an individual trajectory of the student’s learning, as well as develop appropriate recommendations for studying the course, which may appear after any slide, which is determined by the result of the analysis of the time and test results. Moreover, these recommendations can be both advisory and directive, compulsory. Thus, the created model of intellectual lecture-presentation allows you to form an objective “electronic educational portrait” of a student, taking into account his individual characteristics, interests and abilities, which makes it possible to study and assimilate not only formal knowledge, but also support the desire to learn new things.

To answer the key question is, non-Marxist-structuralist theory as a tool of analysis used in answering the above problems. Theory, among others, presented by Ralf Dahrendorf, who stated that the society united by a lack of freedom imposed. Certain position in society to delegate power and authority to another position, the difference in the distribution of authority becomes the determining factor of social conflict sistemati. Various positions in the community have the quality of different authorities. Authority does not lie inside the individual but in the position of this research uses a qualitative approach, data obtained from in-depth interviews (indepthinterview), observation and documentation, then interpreted, or translated to language researchers. The purpose of this study was to examine age and gender differences in the quality of sport friendship, assess the relationship between friendship quality and motivation related variables, and obtain additional support for the validity of the Sport Friendship Quality Scale (SFQS; Weiss & Smith, 1999). Tennis players (N = 191, ages 10–18 years) completed the SFQS and other measures salient to the questions of the study. A MANOVA revealed that adolescent athletes ages 14–18 years rated loyalty and intimacy, things in common, and conflict higher than did younger players, ages 10–13 years, who in turn rated companionship and pleasant play higher. Girls rated self-esteem enhancement and supportiveness, loyalty and intimacy, and things in common higher than did boys, who rated conflict higher. Regression analysis indicated that companionship and pleasant play, conflict resolution, and things in common predicted higher tennis enjoyment and commitment. The collective findings—confirmation of the SFQS six-factor structure, relationships between sport friendship quality dimensions and peer acceptance, and relationships of sport friendship quality dimensions with Harter’s (1988) close friendship measure—support the validity of the SFQS.

There have been few efforts to investigate the concept of quality from learners’ perspectives or to incorporate their needs and perceptions in quality standards in distance education. This is rather surprising, particularly in distance education contexts where the quality of the learning is not derived only from the products and services delivered to the learner but also from the knowledge, understanding, and relationships that are codeveloped by both teachers and learners during the teaching and learning processes. This study proposes and verifies a conceptual model of the 10 dimensions of quality in distance education from the learners’ perspectives and investigates gender differences in the perception of quality in distance education with 1,665 distance learners from 11 Asian countries and one territory. The results show that all 10 dimensions across supportive, pedagogical, and environmental domains in the model are important in judging quality in distance education. Also, gender differences are found in the perceived importance of 10 quality dimensions, barriers to DE, important supporters, and types of support received. The implications of these findings are discussed and suggestions for further research and development are offered.
