Artificial Ground Freezing techniques eliminate the need for structural supports during the course of an excavation, as frozen ground is solid and waterproof. At present, it is adopted as an effective way to deal with various construction ground control challenges such as the mitigation of seepage infiltration into tunnels and shaft excavations; or ground strengthening for excavation. In-depth knowledge of the frozen soil characteristics through experiments and the development of suitable constitutive models that suit the geological conditions of our country are necessary to predict the strength and behavior of the frozen soils. Numerical analysis of frozen soil can be used for mass works like tunneling which cannot be experimentally verified. This paper presents a validation of experimental results obtained from laboratory setup and soil freezing system for C-Phi soil. The main aim is to compare numerical and experimental results and hence obtaining the shear strength parameter of the soil, similar to the conventional triaxial test setup. To perform numerical analysis Finite element tool ANSYS 19 is used. Soil model is made in ANSYS 19 and required loads are inputted to performed the analysis similar to the experimental method. The result obtained from experimental test setup and numerical analysis was verified and compared and it was found that values of numerical results lies closer to experimental results

Two-Dimensional finite element analysis was used to investigate the performance of seawall construction over weak subgrade soil using artificial base layer material consisted of cemented sand cushion comprising geosynthetics materials. Two types of base layer materials pure sand and cemented sand comprising husk rich ash and two types of geosynthetics materials geogrid and geotextile were used. Constitutive models were used to represent different materials in numerical analysis. The competence of two-dimensional numerical analysis was compared with experimental results. Numerical results showed a superior harmony with the experimental results. Finite element analysis model proved to be a great tool to determine the parameters that are difficult to measure in laboratory experiments. In addition, finite element analysis has the benefit of cost and time saving when compared to experimental investigation work. Numerical results showed strain induced in geosynthetics eliminated beyond a distance approximately equal six times of footing width.

In this work, the mechanical properties of two different adhesives compositions have been investigated both experimentally and numerically. The studied thermoplastic adhesives are Hot-Melt Adhesive (HMA). In particular, a pristine and a nanomodified adhesive with 10% in weight of iron oxide have been considered. The adhesives have been subjected to a series of single lap joint (SLJ) tests using adherends made of polypropylene copolymer. As it is well-known, the structural-mechanical behavior of adhesive joints is mostly influenced by the bonding process: thickness of adhesive as well as its application procedures and the surface preparation of adherends are among the most influencing factors. In addition, the mechanical behavior of SLJ test is particularly influenced by the correct alignment of adherends and applied load. These aspects have been investigated, analyzing the experimental results. Moreover, the experimental results have been used to develop a numerical model of the two adhesives. The numerical analysis has been carried out using the commercial software LS-DYNA. Transient nonlinear finite element analysis has been performed to simulate the mechanical behavior of the thermoplastic adhesives. In particular, the cohesive formulations of the elements have been taken into consideration after a careful literature review. In order to set-up and to validate the mechanical properties of the adhesives, the experimental SLJ tests have been simulated. The developed finite element models enable to investigate more complex joint structures where these types of adhesives are used, such as plastic piping systems and automotive applications. Further, the numerical models allow to investigate with higher accuracy and lower time different aspects such as manufacturing and non-linear effects.

Abstract The finite element method has been used widely in tire engineering. Most tire simulations using the finite element method are static analyses, because tires are very complex nonlinear structures. Recently, transient phenomena have been studied with explicit finite element analysis codes. In this paper, the authors demonstrate the feasibility of tire cornering simulation using an explicit finite element code, PAM-SHOCK. First, we propose the cornering simulation using the explicit finite element analysis code. To demonstrate the efficiency of the proposed simulation, computed cornering forces for a 175SR14 tire are compared with experimental results from an MTS Flat-Trac Tire Test System. The computed cornering forces agree well with experimental results. After that, parametric studies are conducted by using the proposed simulation.

Nonlinear numerical analysis for the force performance of frame middle joint is processed in this paper with the finite element software of ABAQUS. Compared with experimental results, numerical analysis results are found to be reasonable. Then the influence of factors such as shaped steel ratio and axial-load ratio are contrastively analyzed. The results show that shaped steel ratio has a greater influence on the bearing capacity and hysteretic performance of the structure, but the axial-load ratio has less influence.

This paper aims at presenting and discussing the numerical studies performed to estimate the mechanical and thermal behavior of RC flat slabs at elevated temperature and fire. The numerical analysis is carried out using finite element programs by developing models to simulate the performance of the buildings subjected to fire. The mechanical and thermal properties of the materials obtained from the experimental work are involved in the modeling that the outcomes will be more realistic. Many parameters related to fire resistance of the flat slabs have been studied and the finite element analysis results reveal that the width and thickness of the slab, the temperature gradient, the fire direction, the exposure duration and the thermal restraint are important factors that influence the vertical deflection, bending moment and force membrane of the flat slabs exposed to fire. However, the validation of the models is verified by comparing their results to the available experimental date. The finite element modeling contributes in saving cost and time consumed by experiments.


In this paper, SiCp /Al2O3 composites were fabricated through directed metal oxidation process. Experimental results of these composites validated or compared with Finite Element Method (FEM). Finite Element has become one in all the foremost necessary tools offered to an engineer. The finite part methodology is employed to resolve advanced analysis issues. In this paper, Finite Element Method based ANSYS software is used to FEM model to determine mechanical properties of SiC reinforced Al2O3 matrix composite by changing volume fractions of SiC. The comparison of experimental results with Finite element analysis provides detailed information about the results of these comparisons. The FA was competent of predict the information for several scenario quite fine

Using domestic MFSP membrane as a medium of energy conversion, a kind of MFSP actuator was designed. The dedicated test equipment was constructed for experimental research, and the experimental results were given. The strip and circular MSFP membrane were analyzed qualitatively to obtain the deformation characteristics of membrane by finite element analysis software.

The present study investigates a film actuator made with dielectric cellulose acetate films separated by narrow spacers as a means of electrostatic actuation for potential haptic application. Fabrication process for the actuator is explained along with experiments conducted over a wide frequency range of actuation frequency. A valid finite element simulation of the actuator is made on the quarter section of the actuator by using full 3D finite elements. Vibration characteristics such as fundamental natural frequency, mode shape and output velocity in the frequency range for haptic feeling generation are obtained from the finite element analysis and compared with the experimental results. Experimental results demonstrate that the finite element model is practical and effective enough in predicting the vibration characteristics of the actuator for haptic application. The film actuator shows many promising properties like high transparency, wide range of actuation frequency and high vibration velocity for instance.

Abstract In high pressure applications, rectangular blocks of steel are used instead of cylinders as pressure vessels. Bores are drilled in these blocks for fluid flow. Intersecting bores with axes normal to each other and of almost equal diameters, produce stresses which can be many times higher than the internal pressure. Experimental results for the magnitude of maximum tensile stress along the intersection contour were available. A parametric finite element model simulated the experimental set up, followed by correlation between finite element analysis and experimental results. Finally, empirical methods are applied to generate models for the maximum tensile stress σ11 at cross bores of open and close ended blocks. Results from finite element analysis and empirical methods are further matched. Design optimization of cross bores is discussed.
