A STUDY TO ACCESS THE KNOWLEDGE OF MEDICAL STUDENTS REGARDING ORGAN DONATION

Organ transplantations save lives of patients with terminal organ failure and improve quality of life. However there is a huge gap between demand and supply of human organs. The only way to increase organ donations is to educate the health care professionals & public about the importance of organ donation and encourage them to become organ donor. As healthcare professionals are the most suitable person to carry the message to community, their knowledge and attitude towards organ donations should be studied. Aim: This study is determined to access the knowledge of medical students regarding organ donation. Methods: A Cross sectional study was conducted in a medical college of Ahmedabad. 100 medical students were included and they were given questionnaires designed to capture the knowledge and attitude toward organ donation. Responses were collected and analysed by Microsoft Excel and SSPS version 20. Results: 100% students were aware about the term organ donation. 90% students knew organization that work for organ donation awareness in city. 85% students were aware of the transplantation of human organ act 1994. 70% knew any hospital in city where organ transplantation is performed. Conclusion: The result of study revealed that there exists a knowledge gap among the medical students regarding organ donation & there is an urgent need for addressing this knowledge which will help in improving the organ donation rate in our country.

Background: With the global increase in the incidence organ failure and subsequent advancement in the medical technology, organ transplantation is growing as the best choice of treatment among the patients with various kinds of organ failure. However, the rate of deceased organ donation is relatively low in South-East Asia regions, including Nepal. This has created a mismatch between the demand and supply of organs for transplantation. World Health Organization encourages organ transplantation from a deceased organ donor as there is no risk to the donor. Thus, this paper aimed to assess knowledge and attitude of literate group specifically towards deceased organ donation.Methods: This was a cross-sectional study conducted among 299 students selected conveniently from medicine, law, and mass communication streams from 9 different colleges (3 colleges from each stream) of Kathmandu. Data was collected through a self-administered questionnaire. Knowledge level was classified into three different categories based on obtained scores and attitude was analyzed based on five-point Likert scale.Results: Almost half (48.8%) of the respondents while only 7% had high level of knowledge on the organ donation and transplantation. Similarly, 95% of the people had positive attitude towards organ donation. However, there was a weak correlation between knowledge and attitude of the respondents. None of the respondents carried an organ donation card.Conclusions: There is a need to plan robust strategies to educate people on organ donation so that they can make pragmatic decisions to register their names for deceased organ donation.

Background: Deaths due to organ failure are reaching alarming numbers mainly due to paucity of organ donation. The medical students who are the future doctors hold promise to alleviate this paucity by willing to register as a donor themselves as well as facilitating cadaver organ donation process. Objective was to assess the perspectives (awareness and attitudes) of medical students regarding organ donation.Methods: The present cross sectional descriptive study was conducted among 280 undergraduates’ students of Government Medical College Jammu, J and K, India. A pretested and self administered 22 item questionnaire was used to collect information on socio-demographic characteristics (5), to assess awareness (11) and attitude (6) about organ donation.Results: Higher proportion of female students were aware about transplantation of human organ act (p<0.05). Awareness about organ donation card was very poor among both the sexes. Only 77.50% of the respondents were aware of the legal age for organ donation. Higher proportion of male students considered themselves to be future organ donor (p<0.05) although both the sexes wanted to be informed more on organ donation. Organ could be wasted (47.14%) was the main barrier among respondents for organ donation.Conclusions: The awareness and attitude among the respondents were found to be non-desirable on many parameters. Authors suggest introduction of a teaching module which should include all aspects of organ donation in medical schools starting from first profession onwards.

Objective: To analyze the knowledge and attitude among medical students regarding organ donation. Study design: A cross sectional study Placement and Duration: The study was conducted during the period of six months from September 2019 to March 2020 at Azra Naheed Medical College Lahore. Materials and Methods: Sample size was 150 a predesigned close ended questionnaire was used to collect data, out of which 8 incomplete questionnaires were excluded. SPSS version 21 was used to analyze the data. Results: Overall, 130 respondents were aware of the term organ donation out of which 74 wish to donate their organs. The main barriers related to organ donation during life and after death include mainly religious beliefs, fear of surgical procedures, misconception that they cannot donate because of some medical illness, having a cultural belief that the body should be kept intact after death or having a fear that their body will be disfigured after donating an organ. 90.8% respondents believe that there is a need to promote organ donation. Greater load of information come from social media. Conclusion: It can be concluded that there is a need to promote organ donation. Identified barriers should be taken in the account while motivating the population to donate in future. Key words: Organ donation, Attitude, Barriers

Background: The shortage of organ donors is the key rate-limiting factor for organ transplantation in India. Many strategies have been proposed. One of the strategy is by improving awareness of organ donation and transplantation in the population. This study seeks to assess the knowledge and attitude of the medical students toward organ donation and transplantation. The objective of the study was to assess the knowledge and attitude regarding organ donation and transplantation among medical students.Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted among 510 undergraduate medical students of K.S Hegde Medical Academy. A tool with 30 questions was designed and administered to the students, in order to assess their knowledge and attitude regarding organ donation and transplantation. Data collected was analysed using SPSS software.Results: The mean age of the students was (20.21±1.32). When compared to boys, girls reported higher mean scores in knowledge (9.22±1.11); and attitude (7.32±0.81). The first year students had higher scores for their knowledge (9.46±1.28) compared to other years. The third year students showed a higher mean attitude score (1.61±1.07) (p=0.02). Hindus scored significantly higher mean knowledge, and attitude as compared to Christians and Muslims (p=0.03). There was a positive correlation between mean knowledge, and attitude of students regarding organ donation and transplantation.Conclusions: There was adequate knowledge in students but their attitude was poor. The study throws light on their inadequacies of knowledge and attitude of medical students, necessitating the inclusion of the topic in their curriculum.

The purpose of this study was to assess the knowledge and attitude of health care professionals regarding their use of universal precaution measures at a public emergency service. The study also aimed to assess the rates of occupational accidents involving biological substances among those workers. This study was performed with 238 workers, from June to November 2006, using univariate and multivariate analysis. The chance of not adopting precaution measures was 20.7 (95% CI: 5.68 - 75.14) times greater among drivers compared to physicians. No significant association was found between adopting universal precaution measures. The occupational accident rate was 20.6% (40.8% involving sharp-edged objects). The risk of physicians having an occupational accident was 2.7(95% CI: 1.05 - 7.09) times higher than that of drivers. The fact that a staff member had adequate knowledge about universal precaution measures was insufficient to foster compatible attitudes towards reducing the risk of transmitting infectious agents and causing occupational accidents.

Abstract Background and Aims Organ transplantation is a treatment option to millions of patients worldwide. In this area, Morocco lags far behind the developed countries and even compared to some countries in the Arab world. The objective of this study is to assess the knowledge; social attitudes and perceptions of donation and organ transplantation by medical students. Method This is a cross-sectional study descriptive and analytical target held in the Faculty of Medicine and Pharmacy of. Results 320 medical students were surveyed. The mean age was 21.5 ± 2.32 years, with a female representing 78%. Almost all surveyed students knew the lethal diseases requiring the use of the graft (99.8%) and 97% of them knew the transplantable organs. 92% had heard of the possibility of organ transplants in Morocco, 90% of students felt that there are many people in need of transplants 87% of students were aware of the existence of legislation governing organ donation in Morocco. Only 7% thought that acts of donation and transplantation of organs are performed in private clinics, 89% of respondents know that there is a book in which one can register to make known its agreement to give its organs after death, 81% do not know the steps to register for this registre.97% were for organ donation and causes of refusal were: religion and the attainment of bodily integrity Conclusion There has to be targeted actions in order to promote donation and transplant in Morocco in order to enhance knowledge and information on medical, religious and legal order that the attitudes and perceptions of the population live.

Abstract Objectives : In this cross-sectional study among 220 medical students we aimed to determine the nutritional knowledge and attitude of medical students through clinical training courses (externship and internship) of Tabriz University of Medical Sciences, Iran. A nutritional knowledge questionnaire included 51 questions was used to determine the correct, perceived and accuracy of knowledge of the participant in different aspects of nutrition sciences. Nutritional knowledge was calculated as percentage of correct responses. The nutrition attitude questionnaire included 30 questions. Both questionnaires were confirmed in terms of the validity and reliability for assessing nutritional knowledge and attitude in this sample of Iranian medical students. Results: The mean score of correct knowledge was not significantly different among externs and interns (68.20±7.50% and 67.87±6.04% respectively, p=0.729). Results showed that most of the participants (49.61% of externs and 57.14% of inters) had a poor nutritional knowledge, significantly varied by age (p=0.035). The mean attitude index of the subjects was not significantly different among externs and interns (106.37±13.66 and 108.16±13.35 out of 145 respectively, p=0.337). Most students (92.7%) had a very appropriate attitude toward nutrition, significantly varied by sex (p=0.010). These findings indicate that there are multiple deficiencies in nutrition knowledge of medical students.

Comprehensive care towards geriatric health can be sustained by having good knowledge and attitude among the providers. Hence, this research aims to measure the knowledge and attitude of the final year medical students towards geriatric health and determine the associated factors. A cross-sectional study was conducted among the students using structured questionnaires of Geriatric-Attitude-Scale and Palmore-Facts-on-Aging-Quiz was used. Data was analysed using Mann Whitney U test, Chi square test and Spearman correlation coefficient analysis for the association between the score and studied variables. Median score of students’ knowledges is at 14.00 (IQR 13.00) and mean score for attitude is 48.52 (+5.53) respectively. Place of residence (P= 0.01) and presence of grandparents (P= 0.04) were the significant factors that affected knowledge of students towards geriatrics while number of siblings (P= 0.05) influenced attitudes of students towards geriatrics. Improvement of current geriatric curriculum should be done with more refined implementation of gerontology course in the basic medical learning.

Background & Aim: Nowadays, organ transplantation is the final treatment for the patients with end-stage organ dysfunction. Considering the importance of the organ donation and the important role of nurses in increasing the number of organ donations, the present study aimed to determine the knowledge and attitudes of nurses in Sanandaj hospitals toward organ donation. Materials & Methods: This study was descriptive-analytic (cross-sectional). 250 nurses working in hospitals in Sanandaj city were selected by stratified sampling method in 2017 and completed the questionnaire on knowledge and attitude towards organ donation. Data were analyzed by SPSS software version 20, using independent t-test and ANOVA. Results: The results showed that the mean score of knowledge was 13/2±04/ 57 and the mean score of attitude was 44.7±82.75 and 207 (82.2%) did not have a donation card, while 146 nurses (58.4%) tended to receive a donation card. The mean score of nurses' knowledge about donation was 13.2±26/49 and the mean score of their attitude was 13.2±07. 91. There was also a significant correlation between attitude and level of education (p=0/045). Conclusion: According to the results, the knowledge and attitude of the majority of nurses were moderate and most of them did not have a donation card. Considering the importance of this effective group in increasing the culture of the community toward organ donation, education and preparing appropriate background for receiving, and increasing knowledge and attitudes toward organ donation for the nurses is necessary.

Background: Hand hygiene is a milestone in the field of infectious disease control. Promotion of improved hand hygiene has been recognized as an important public health measure. Therefore hand washing is being promoted in various ways. This study has been conducted to assess the level of knowledge and attitude regarding hand hygiene practices amongst the medical students to identify areas of gaps in their knowledge, attitude and practices.Methods: This is a cross sectional study conducted among medical undergraduates of a private medical college in western Utter Pradesh. A pre tested questionnaire with multiple choice questions was used for collection of data.Results: A total of 246 MBBS students participated in the study out of which 50.4 % students were male and rest were female. 78.5% participants were belonging to the age group 19-21 years. Students have good knowledge of hand washing irrespective of their educational front.Conclusions: The results of our study are fairly good still a proper training program is required to generate awareness among the community. Maintenance of hand hygiene should be a part of our education system at primary level.
