The objective of this research work was to prepare a chrono modulated delivery system to meet chronopharmacological needs of asthma. In this study theophylline was selected as a model drug. To meet this objective we considered an initial lag phase of release for 3-5 hrs and later a rapid (surge) release phase. To achieve surge release a rapidly releasing core tablet of theophylline was developed by admixing theophylline with effervescent granules and super disintegrants. The lag phase in release was achieved by coating the EV core tablets with release retarding polymer EUDRAGIT RS-100 containing HPMC, further over coated with enteric polymer CAP. The results indicate that a rapidly releasing EV tablet of theophylline cab be developed which when coated with the polymers a lag phase of 2 hrs was achievable followed by a surge release. The paper is dedicated to the 130th anniversary of the birth of Volodymyr Levkovych Symyrenko. The authors have elucidated the main directions of the research work on the fruit and small fruit growing in the country and the newest achievements of the Coordination and Methodological Centre (CMC) "Horticulture" in the scientific support of horticulture in Ukraine, as the realization, deepening and enrichment of the great scientist`s ideas. The Institute of Horticulture of the National Academy of Agrarian Sciences (IH NAAS) of Ukraine has developed methods that provide the systematic approach to the organization of scientific researches. A number of methodological tasks have been formulated and are used, the implementation of which enable to increase significantly the effectiveness and scientific and practical value of the developments in the branch of horticulture. The directive of V. Symyrenko concerning the necessity of breeding at the genetic level has been translated in reality. When elaborating zonal ecologically safe technologies of growing, storage and processing of competitive products of fruit and small fruit products in the institutions of CMC "Horticulture" comprehensive research are carried out, thanks to which the Centre scientists managed to develop modern high-efficient technologies for the main horticultural zones of our country. Scientific and practical recommendations on the use of promise ornamental plants forms and cultivars in the landscape and shade gardening have been developed under the subprogram "Ornamental horticulture". Winterhardiness of 70 roses has been estimated, the valuation of perspective hybrid forms continued. The reproduction regime for the Lavandula angustifolia promise have been optimized, the comprehensive assessment of 40 ornamental forms of the coniferous ornamental crops has been conducted, effective stimulants and reproduction regimes selected for 10 of them. The database of the ornamental crops producers has been created their major sales canals have been analyzed as well as the principal market functioning elements. The Recommendations for optimizing the inland ornamental crops market until 2030 have been developed as well as its development strategy.

Timber column design methods have now to take account of a body of research work on timber properties from in-grade tests and on strength considerations using notions of stressed volume. This paper gathers results from this body of work and proposes a design formula for timber columns which is convenient to use and represents true behaviour. It includes, in particular, a material strength effect related to the length of the column. The proposed formula has been incorporated into the new Canadian code “Engineering design in wood.” Key words: timber, buckling, columns, design, size effects.

The level to gently undulating ground on backfilled mined-out areas is referred to as reclaimed mine spoil. This paper deals with model footings for light structures placed on such soil. For the case considered, the spoil is dominated by a disaggregated clay shale. Settlement of the spoil arises from self-weight, an increase in overburden, and saturation. This last source takes place as the water table rises or when surface infiltration occurs. This latter cause is the source of potentially damaging settlement and is the focus of the research work. Four footings, each 1 × 1 m, were placed on a 1 m thick mat composed of either preloaded, compacted soil, compacted soil/flyash mixture, or compacted flyash. Each footing was loaded to 61 kPa. The settlement was small under this load but every footing settled intolerably when the soil below the footing was saturated. However, the results have merit. Further design consideration needs to be devoted to obviating the ingress of surface water. Key words: settlement, spoil, reclaimed land, model footings, slaking.

This chapter deals with scientific information about the wild socioeconomic plants used by the local inhabitants of the Champawat district of Uttarakhand for the enhancement of their livelihood. During this entire study, it was observed and documented that poor rural people of this area are educationally and financially backward, and they do not have any permanent source of income; due to this reason they are unable to fulfill their necessary requirements. Therefore, they are totally dependent on various forest ecosystem services, viz., selling prepared herbal medicines, wild edible fruits, and wild ornamental plants, etc., which shares approximately 45-50% of their total annual income and plays a vital role for the upliftment of their livelihood. During this research work, a total of 63 plant species belonging to 58 genera under 46 families have been documented, which are being used as livelihood resources by the locals of this area.

The Botanical Garden of M. V. Lomonosov Moscow State University is the oldest scientific botanical institution in Russia. Established in 1706 as a physic garden, it was acquired by Moscow University in 1805. This article reviews the dynamics of the range of research areas pursued by the Garden in 1937–1973 (from its becoming an autonomous institution within MSU to the splitting of Biological and Soil Science Faculty and the Garden becoming part of a recreated Biological Faculty). Based on the analysis of bibliography and materials of the theme plans and reports on the Garden’s research work, deposited at the MSU Archive, this time period may be divided into several stages. Thus, in 1937–1948, the research focused on the development of methods for experimental morphogenesis, designed do obtain new heritable forms (induced polyploidy, X-ray treatment of crop and ornamental plants (L. P. Breslavets-Krestovnikova); development of scientific foundation for horticulture (“green construction”) to expand the diversity of herbaceous ornamental plants (M. P. Nagibina); studies on plant development rhythms and factors (A. V. Kozhevnikov, I. G. Serebryakov). In 1948–1951, after the August VASKhNIL Session, the problems of vegetative hybridization prevailed while, in 1952–1957, the researchers’ attention was focused on the development of scientific basis for the construction of a new botanical garden as a component of natural science cluster of MSU on Leninskie (Vorobyovy) Gory (N. A. Bazilevskaya). In 1958–1964, the focus was shifted towards complex studies of the domestic flora. In 1967–1973, the garden’s main lines of research were evolutionary morphology, plant taxonomy, floristics, and botanical geography (A. K. Skvortsov, V. N. Tikhomirov); plant protection and agrochemistry; and breeding and genetics of ornamental plants and fruit and berry crops. Therefore, at different stages, the emphasis was placed on both the fundamental and applied research whose focus changed depending on the sociopolitical context of the epoch.
