ABSTRACTPregnancy in university women is a social, economic and health problem, which is why this research aims to identify the impact of pregnancy and motherhood on the academic performance of students of the National University of Chimborazo, during the October period 2017-March 2018, to subsequently intervene in support strategies that benefit this vulnerable group.

This study investigated the impact of using smartphones on the academic performance of undergraduate students at the North-West University, South Africa. To determine the impact, this study deployed the quantitative research approach to collect data from 375 undergraduate students using questionnaires. It was found that most undergraduate students are using their smartphones to engage with fellow students and lecturers. It was also found that using smartphones distracts students from their studies in certain aspects. The results also showed the impact of using smartphones on students’ academic capabilities and progression.

This study investigates and explores the adoption of information communication technology by the universities and the impact it makes on the university students’ academic performance. The study also examines the moderators’ effect of gender, GPA, and student majors on the relationship between ICT and academic achievement. By using a quantitative research approach and a sample size of 1000 students, data were collected about the ICT adoption in universities and the relative performance of students belonging to four Saudi universities. Structure equation modelling was chosen to determine the validity of the research model. The Analysis of Moment Structures (AMOS), specially used for structural equation modelling and path analysis, was used as the research tool. The findings reveal that there exists a relationship between ICT adoption and academic performance in a conservative environment. An additional finding also stated that ICT adoption resulted in the improvement of the performance of female students more than the male. However, students’ IT major was found to be making no impact on students’ academic achievement. A discussion of findings, limitations, and suggestions for future research has been provided in the study. Finally, it also provides implications of the current study to the existing knowledge.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to analyse the evolution of top management’s understanding of product quality in Bulgaria since the end of communism. The study examines three specific areas: top management’s understanding of the term “quality”; top management’s understanding of the relationship between quality and business performance; and top management’s understanding of the impact of job position on quality. Design/methodology/approach The paper relies on a quantitative research approach by using data from a survey of 186 companies in Bulgaria. Findings The paper suggests that senior managers in Bulgaria continue to base their understanding of “quality” on a single approach (*a characteristic of the communist era), with the product-based and the user-based approaches currently being the two most common ones. At the same time, surprisingly enough, this study claims that senior management in Bulgaria is currently well aware of the importance of quality as a dimension of firm’s competitiveness, and is also highly conscious of its roles’ impact on product quality. Research limitations/implications The results of this study are exclusively based on the case of Bulgaria and must be treated with caution in the case of other former communist states from the Central and Eastern Europe (CEE) region. Practical implications This paper has relevance for both managers and companies doing business in Eastern Europe. Originality/value This is the first paper to provide detailed analysis of the evolution of the understanding of “product quality” in CEE since the end of communism. Moreover, this paper applies, for the first time, Garvin’s five approaches to defining quality within a practical context.

The traditional advantage of using Information Communication Technologies (ICTs) to enhance work flexibility also has a drawback of enabling academics to continue working even after regular working hours. This phenomenon has been referred to as technology-assisted supplemental work (TASW). Although TASW enhances academics’ work productively, they also have a negative impact on their family-life. The impact TASW has on academics and on higher education institutions can be understood by measuring the phenomenon properly by using a reliable and valid scale. The aim of this study is too validate a newly developed TASW scale by Fenner and Renn (2010). This study adopted a quantitative research approach and used an online survey to gather data. The sample included academic from a higher education in South Africa (n = 216). The results indicate that the TASW is a valid and reliable measure of technology among the sample of South African academics.

A lot has been written with regards to anxiety in education and how it affects academic performance of students though little is known on the impact of test anxiety or examinations on pre-service language teachers. This study decided to examine the role of examinations in inducing anxiety among EFL learners and the extent to which this affects academic performance of students. In order to achieve this, a quantitative research design was used for this study. A questionnaire was used to elicit information from the participants and the instrument was distributed to 55 EFL learners to elicit information on their opinions regarding the influence of test anxiety on the students. The instruments were face validated as well checked for reliability. After collecting the data and carrying out analysis, findings derived from the study were used to make valid pedagogical conclusions on the impact of test anxiety on EFL learners

In spite of the importance of implementing Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) system in any organization, there are still many fears of not getting the return on investment from implementing it. In addition, there are many ERP systems implemented in different organizations that claim they did not get enough benefit from these systems. For this reason, this paper is intended to study the impact of ERP implementation approaches (Agile, Big Bang, and Hybrid) on the performance of Procure-to-Pay business processes. This paper adapts the quantitative research approach by using the survey strategy, which is conducted by a questionnaire collected from 91 respondents working in fifteen companies that implement Oracle ERP in Jordan. The researcher uses the SPSS as an analysis technique to test all hypotheses. The findings of the study show that the two ERP Implementation approaches (Big Bang and Hybrid) have a significant impact on the performance of Procure-to-Pay business processes. On the other hand, the study shows that Agile (ERP) implementation approach has no significant impact on the performance of Procure-to-Pay business processes.

Background: Knowledge loss causes challenges for organisations that wish to remain competitive. These organisations must identify the risks that could lead to knowledge loss and become aware of issues that affect knowledge retention. Objectives: The objective of this research was to identify tacit knowledge retention barriers that could cause knowledge loss in an organisation. The paper presents a framework for the assessment of the impact of these barriers and discusses the research findings in order to critique that framework.Method: A quantitative strategy was used to interpret the findings. The target population is information technology (IT) professionals in a government organisation. Interviews were conducted in order to produce a more context-sensitive interpretation of the findings. A quantitative research approach was used to ensure the findings would precisely reflect the target population. Results: The majority of respondents confirmed that career development requires professional development, training prospects and improves the employability of employees. The agreed result was that respondents seek autonomy, that is, the ability to make decisions. Job stress and burnout are experienced because of problems with in filling posts, and the competition between the private and public sectors for experienced IT employees. Conclusion: Certain determinants were found that affect barriers in knowledge management: organisational commitment, job satisfaction, job characteristics and talent management. These need to be measured to prevent barriers from occurring. Implications are drawn from the study; these provide a focus for further research to bridge some gaps in information technology that currently limit the widespread use of knowledge management.
