Comparison of Custom Sounds for Achieving Tinnitus Relief

Tinnitus masking has been a widely used method for treating clinically significant tinnitus. The method, referred to herein as "sound-based relief," typically uses wearable ear-level devices ("maskers") to effect palliative tinnitus relief. Although often effective, this approach is limited to the use of broadband noise with the maskers. We hypothesized that the effectiveness of treatment can be improved by expanding the auditory-stimulus options available to patients. A pilot study was conducted to determine for each of 21 subjects the most effective of custom sounds that are designed to promote tinnitus relief. While sitting in a sound booth, subjects listened to white noise and to custom sounds that are available commercially for providing tinnitus relief. Three sound formats ("E-Water," "E-Nature," and "E-Air") were provided by the Dynamic Tinnitus Mitigation (DTM-6a) system (Petroff Audio Technologies, Inc.). Additionally, seven sounds were provided by the Moses/Lang CD7 system (Oregon Hearing Research Center). Considering group data, all of the sounds provided a significant reduction in tinnitus annoyance relative to the annoyance of tinnitus alone. Two of the commercial sounds (DTM E-Nature and E-Water) were judged significantly more effective than the other sounds.

NT-ProBNP is a high value cardiac biomarker and widely applies in many cardiovascular diseases. The evaluation of concentration of NT-ProBNP needs the concern about age, gender, obesity and especially we need each cut-off point for each cause of cardiovascular disease in evaluation and clinical application. Because NT-ProBNP is a new cardiac marker and has been researched in 5 recent years, the cut-off of NT-ProBNP is still being studied for the clinical application in cardiovascular diseases. Only the cut-off of NT-ProBNP in diagnosis heart failure was guided by European Society of Cardiology. The meaning of introduce cut-off value of value plays an role as pilot study for the other relate study and brings the NT-ProBNP closely approach to clinical application.

Background Several industry funded studies between 2001–2018 have compared the use of a single brand of baby wipes to cleansing with water and either cloth or cotton wool during nappy changes. All of these studies found that wipes were safe and effective from birth. Recommendations from these studies have included the need for brand or formula comparison but to date, no previous study has done this. Aims The ‘Baby skin integrity comparison survey’ (BaSICS) study was designed to compare three brands of baby wipes to determine if there was any difference in the incidence of irritant diaper dermatitis (IDD or nappy rash) during the first eight weeks of life. Methods Mothers who were allocated to a single brand of nappy but divided into three baby wipe allocation groups, collected and reported survey data on infant skin integrity during one nappy change daily with the use of a user-friendly smartphone application. Findings All brands of wipes were acceptable to mothers and safe and effective when cleaning during nappy changes. The brand containing the fewest ingredients showed a clinically significant advantage of fewer incidents of rash than the other two brands. Conclusion This study demonstrated that wipe formulation is a significant factor in prevention or reduction of IDD during the first eight weeks of life.

Since the late 1960s Wiener's theory on the non-linear functionals of white noise has been widely applied to the construction of mathematical models of non-linear systems, especially in the field of biology. For such applications the main part is the measurement of Wiener's kernels, for which two methods have been proposed: one by Wiener himself and the other by Lee and Schetzen. The aim of this paper is to show that there is another method based on Hida's differential operator.

Of 12 overweight women half received 10 wk. of self-control training and the rest received an equal period aimed at increasing determination to lose weight. Half of each treatment group had expressed a preference for the type of treatment they received and half for the other type of treatment. Both groups lost a statistically significant amount of weight, and at a 3-mo. follow-up there was still a significant weight loss. Follow-up at 6 mo. on 9 of the 12 original subjects indicated both groups regained much of their lost weight. There was no evidence that either type of treatment or receiving one's preferred type of treatment was related to weight loss.

In many scenarios where vibration energy harvesting can be utilized — particularly those involving bio-motions or environmental disturbances — energy sources are broadband and non-stationary. On the other hand, design procedures have been predominantly developed for harmonic or white noise excitation, specifically for single degree of freedom approximations of the transducer. In this paper, a general approach for design optimization of cantilevered, piezoelectric energy harvesters in the presence of band-limited, white-noise excitation is outlined. For this study, human and vehicular motions are considered; these complex waveforms are distilled into a small set of dominant features with regard to their impact on the power output of the device. Criteria based on modal participation factors, including pre-filtering of the disturbance, are used in guiding the reduction of the input and plant degrees of freedom in order to make the design optimization problem tractable. This process determines the error in assuming a low-order model for the transducer in the presence of broadband noise that may excite multiple modes of vibration. Furthermore, this study considers the quantitative impact of charge cancellation in higher modes and the benefits of inserting multiple electrodes along the length. To illustrate these methods, energy harvesters are designed for acceleration data collected from walking and car idling. It is shown that a simple method that is a generalization of naïve approaches that assume harmonic or white noise excitation and a single degree of freedom can determine which simplifications are appropriate and the inaccuracies that can be expected from them.

✓ The use of colloid agents to achieve hypervolemia in the prevention and treatment of postsubarachnoid hemorrhage (post-SAH) vasospasm is included in the standard of care at many institutions. Risk profiles are necessary to ensure appropriate use of these agents. In a series of 85 patients with recent aneurysmal SAH, 26 developed clinical symptoms of vasospasm. Fourteen of the 26 were treated with hetastarch for volume expansion while the other 12 received plasma protein fraction (PPF). Clinically significant bleeding pathologies were noted in six patients who received hetastarch as a continuous intravenous infusion. Hetastarch increased partial thromboplastin time from a mean of 23.9 seconds to a mean of 33.1 seconds (p < 0.001) in all patients who received infusions of this agent, while no effect was noted in the 12 patients who received PPF infusions. No other coagulation parameters were altered. This study shows an increase in coagulopathy with the use of hetastarch as compared with the use of PPF for the treatment of postaneurysmal vasospasm.

<p>My name is Salma Meléndez and I am currently a graduate in Agrogenomic Sciences. In March 2020, when COVID-19 was detected in Mexico, I was in my eighth semester of my undergraduate degree. At that time, he had an experiment of overexpression of a gene in bean roots, in order to explore its function during symbiosis with rhizobial bacteria. Unfortunately, the laboratory and the entire campus canceled their face-to-face activities in order to reduce the risk of contagion. An alternative was to take the experimental plants to my house to give the proper care, however, the situation became difficult as I did not have the space or the required conditions at home. On the other hand, other research centers with which we had collaboration agreements also canceled access, such is the case of the Optical Research Center, where we used the confocal microscope to detect subcellular location of proteins. The closure of institutions allowed me to write theoretical parts of my thesis, however, the experimental phase was definitely affected for at least six months. The experiment with the plants was almost completely lost. In the subsequent months I had the opportunity to re-enter my institution; however, under strict conditions and on staggered days, which made certain measurements that require daily continuity difficult. Currently, the laboratory is not as it used to look, full of colleagues sharing results and difficulties, exchanging advice and even certain materials. I think the pandemic has pushed us to do our work more individually and slowly. Consequently, my degree was delayed and transferred from 2020 to 2021. There are still many challenges to overcome, although activities have not been fully restored, science does not stop and we have found a way to face it, slowly but surely.</p>

Introduction: Detection and treatment of chronic endometritis (CE) is clinically significant, though involves intrauterine intervention to collect endometrium. The aim: To estimate the possibility to use fertility α2-microglobulin (FAMG) as the marker of the high risk for CE. Materials and methods: 70 women with CE who were planning pregnancy were tested for FAMG in menstrual blood. 40 of them received treatment of CE. The other 30 women refused from the proposed treatment. The control group involved 30 women who had neither CE nor luteal phase deficiency (LPD). Additional group (20 women) had LPD without CE. Results: The decrease of FAMG by 2.4 times was noted in women with CE (16.3 ± 3.9 μg/ml against 39.8 ± 8.3 μg/ml in the controls). In LPD the index was 5.6 times lower. After treatment the level of FAMG was increasing. Conclusions: The decrease of the amount of FAMG in menstrual blood is specific for women both with CE and LPD. Detection of abnormally low rates of FAMG in all women with CE enables, with the exception of absolute hypoprogesteronemia and LPD, using it as a simple method of estimation of the functional state of endometrium. Its application can be very useful both for non-invasive diagnosis of CE and subsequent evaluation of treatment of this pathology.

This study investigates the inaccuracies manifested in the translation of dental terms from English into Arabic by Palestinian dentists. It underscores the fact that the translation of dental terms is part and parcel of technical translation; and accounts for the major causes and provides an adequate solution for such inaccuracies.The findings of the study point out the shortcomings of using different dental translation strategies simultaneously for the same term and point out that the experience and the institutional background of the dentists have a profound impact on the accuracy of translating dental terms. The findings have also underlined the difference between technical and conventional translation rules. While the study points out that dentists have used Arabicisation, transliteration, and descriptive translation strategies for the accomplishment of adequate equivalences in the translation of dental terms, it has shown also that Arabicisation is highly neglected and rarely used by dentists in comparison with the other two translation strategies. Transliteration is the most common especially among specialists and descriptive is mainly used by dentists with non-specialists.The methodology used in this study relied heavily on the data taken from a pilot study, carried out through the distribution of a questionnaire to a hundred dentists at the American University in the city of Jenin and in the city of Nablus on the West Bank, followed with a number of personal interviews with a number of dentists.

An electric boat system as a pilot study for the electric ferry was designed and field-tested in Samal Island, Philippines, to verify sustainability for inter-island transport. This pilot study uses 4.5m monohull with a displacement weight of 343kg. During the experiment, two cases were compared: in the first case the boat was powered solely with batteries and in the other case with the aid of photovoltaic (PV) modules. For the first case, 24V electric propulsion was driven by two 12V, 100Ah batteries, which resulted to a navigational range of around 18, 16 and 15 trips with energy consumption of 111.64Wh, 117.19Wh and 123.92Wh respectively. In the second case, the photovoltaic modules were attached on the boat to supplement the PV used while on sail. Results in the second case showed that PV module supplemented energy was about to 13.4%, 26.8% and 38.7% using three different speeds like 3.18, 3.32 and 3.84knots and the navigational range extended to 4km, 1km, and 14.4km respectively. Therefore, the electric boat with the aid of PV module answers the problem in the energy management system that deals with the sustainability of the system in the inter-island transport in Philippines.
