Listening is the ways of picking up the information delivered by others in daily life, and also is the most important elements in studying foreign language. Several people have, however, problem in listening because they think that listening is the hardest skill to be mastered. To solve this barrier, teachers carry a big responsibility in their classroom. Teachers need to encourage students’ participation through preparing an interesting strategy during listening instruction in order to attract students’ attention to take part actively in listening. This study attempted to investigate the strategy used by teacher in teaching listening. Richard’s theory of listening strategy to include bottom-up and top-down was applied. Through utilizing qualitative descriptive analysis, this study involved three listening lecturers of English Department of Universitas Negeri Gorontalo where they were observed and interviewed. The analysis of data revealed that teachers used mostly top-down process activities in listening class.

The purpose of the article is to prove theoretically and check experimentally the effectiveness of explicit models for language learning strategies based on the instructions in the process of professionally oriented English communication. The hypothesis of the research implies that the level of professional English communicative competence will increase in the case of combining such models as “top-down” and “bottom-up” while professionally oriented English communication. The study employed the mixed research design method as quantitative (Likert’s scale, Bespalko’s learning coefficient, Fisher’s criterion) and qualitative (interpretation of questionnaire results) methods. The levels of explicit models using for language learning strategies are defined by the results of the conducted survey of 116 pre-service teachers of Vinnytsia Mykhailo Kotsiubynskyi State Pedagogical University. One of the conditions of experimental learning is a sequence of stages in the process of applying two explicit models for language strategy learning instruction “top-down” and “bottom-up” in the process of pre-service teachers’ professionally oriented English communication. Findings. The results of the control test at the final step of the experiment have confirmed the effectiveness of two variants of explicit models for language strategy learning instruction in the process of professionally oriented English communication. The analysis of experimental training results has shown the formation of professionally oriented English communicative competence at the level B2, as well as a significant increase in the participants’ knowledge, skills and abilities of foreign language learning strategies. Implications for research and practice. Combining “top-down” and “bottom-up” explicit models for language learning strategy instruction contributes to more effective assimilation and expansion of the repertoire of learning and communicative strategies and improves professionally oriented English communicative competence of pre-school teachers at university level.

The present study aimed at making a pedagogical exploration into listening comprehension skills and examining the problems faced by learners in the English as a Foreign Language (EFL) classroom situation at Jazan University, Jazan city, Saudi Arabia. To analyze the problems, two very important processes were considered; namely, top-down and bottom-up process. The top-down process worked well because of their previous knowledge of the context to make sense of what is being said in the class. However, the bottom-up also worked as well.

Competitive education around the world brings up many issues about curriculum design. In order to cultivate the ideal talents with abundant knowledge of language and specialties, it is necessary to design appropriate curricula. This comparative study has been carried out to discuss the appropriateness of curriculum designed for two parallel groups of English learners as a foreign language based on the survey in a technological school, a case study in China. In this special issue, curriculum design is likely to be problematic although it made a little improvement compared to the one before 2010: a) an analogical curriculum has been designed for both groups of students; b) what directions a curriculum design should follow, the more the better? c) how to balance a national curriculum, its localization and its implementation? d) top-down and bottom-up, language and specialty, which matters? This paper eventually puts forwards some suggestions which would be helpful for the future curriculum design.

Reading strategies have been declared as a vital role in reading comprehension among the students whose English is their second or foreign language. The use of reading strategies would help the learners to deeper understand the text so that they could achieve their tasks. The present study then investigates the use of reading strategies by focusing on the bottom-up and top-down models for both academic and business texts among Thai students in tertiary level. Two hundred-seventy non-simple random undergraduate students participated in this study. The forty-five-item questionnaire was delivered to the participants. The findings were that top-down reading strategies were used the most for both academic and business reading, whereas bottom-up reading strategies were reported the least on both kinds of text. The results suggest that larger numbers of participants, correction between the proficiency and the use of strategies, in-depth interview, and strategies used between low and high proficient readers should be examined.

Summary Since textbooks are one of the integral components of the learning process, their evaluation is important to improve their correspondence to the learners’ needs and goals. Particularly, in societies in which English is used as a foreign language, ESP textbooks play a crucial role in developing students’ skills of English in job-related situations. The present paper discusses the quality of ESP textbooks by performing a case study of an English for Specific Purposes (ESP) textbook “English for the students of Visual Arts (Painting, Graphics, & Sculpture)” developed and published by SAMT as the pioneer in developing ESP textbooks in Iranian academic setting. The study tries to investigate the overall suitability and pedagogical value of the ESP textbook and the features which make it distinguishable among its global counterparts. The study was carried out by drawing on a model proposed by McDonough and Shaw (2003), with an intention to evaluate the present quality of the Visual Arts ESP textbook critically. Both visual and content-based aspects of the book were thoroughly evaluated to identify their general pedagogical value by using the method of qualitative descriptive analysis. In that way, the Visual Arts textbook was analysed on the basis of the framework and guidelines suggested in the available checklist. In addition, semi structured interviews with graduate students, English instructors, subjectspecific instructors, and experts in Visual Arts Courses such as Painting were performed to clarify their opinions about the need for ESP and to analyze their perceptions of English language in general and English for special purposes in particular. The findings of the present study have revealed that there is a fundamental necessity for revision and development of future ESP textbooks in Iranian context. Moreover, the findings imply that traditional materials and frameworks are not responsive to students’ needs and genre knowledge in majors of the Visual Arts.
