Self-editorship and ‘Keith Vaughan’

This chapter examines Keith Vaughan’s attempt to curate his own legacy with the publication of his self-edited Journal & Drawings (1966). At intervals throughout the 1950s he had been revisiting the wartime volumes of his journal and by the early 1960s his opinion of them had changed from scornful critique to aching nostalgia, so in 1965 he commenced (at the behest of Alan Ross) a long process of self-editing journal entries from 1939 to present to be published alongside previously unseen drawings and photographs. The first section of this chapter considers Vaughan’s practices of re-reading his journal and examines his typescripts as evidence of the extensive revisions made to the content and style of specific journal entries for publication. The second section reveals how Vaughan shaped the text of Journal & Drawings through processes of selecting, re-writing, and even devising entirely new material, resulting in a streamlined narrative at once confessional yet choreographed. The third section of this chapter surveys the placement of drawings and photographs in Journal & Drawings and how words and images work to communicate the interrelations between his journal-writing and visual practice – and to fix and control the image of ‘Keith Vaughan’.

This study was conducted as an attempt to discover the effect of applying Demonstration Method on students’ achievement in speaking skill. It was an experimental research. The subject was students of Grade XII, Vocational High School (Sekolah Menengah Kejuruan: SMK), which consisted of 79 students. The research was divided into two groups: experimental and control groups. The instrument used to collect the data was speaking test. To obtain the reliability of the test, the writer applied Kuder Richardson 21 formula. The result of the reliability was 0.7, and it was found that the test was reliable. The data were analyzed by using t-test formula. The analysis showed that the scores of the students in the experimental group were significantly higher than the scores of the students in the control group at the level of significant m = 0.05 with the degree of freedom (df) 77, t-observed value 8.9 > t-table value 1.99. The findings indicate that using Demonstration Method significantly affected the students’ achievement in speaking skill. So, English teachers are suggested to use Demonstration Method in order to improve students’ achievement in speaking skill.

The article presents the results of mathematical experiments with the system «Social potential of childhood in the Russian regions». In the structure of system divided into three subsystems – the «Reproduction of children in the region», «Children’s health» and «Education of children», for each defined its target factor (output parameter). The groups of infrastructure factors (education, health, culture and sport, transport), socio-economic, territorial-settlement, demographic and en-vironmental factors are designated as the factors that control the system (input parameters). The aim of the study is to build a model îf «Social potential of childhood in the Russian regions», as well as to conduct experiments to find the optimal ratio of the values of target and control factors. Three waves of experiments were conducted. The first wave is related to the analysis of the dynam-ics of indicators for 6 years. The second – with the selection of optimal values of control factors at fixed ideal values of target factors. The third wave allowed us to calculate the values of the target factors based on the selected optimal values of the control factors of the previous wave.

Few issues in the historiography of the “Third Reich” have provoked as much acrimony in the academy as the debate over the nature of the Nazi state. To enable readers to appreciate Fraenkel’s contribution to this debate, this chapter provides a critical review of contending theories of the Nazi state, with particular reference to Franz Neumann’s Behemoth, first published in 1942, and in an enlarged edition in 1944, which has inspired much scholarship on the racial state. The rise of Behemoth corresponded directly with the decline of The Dual State in the final war and early postwar years. Neumann’s Behemoth, which has never gone out of print, exemplifies major shortcomings—theoretical, empirical, methodological—in early studies of Nazi rule. I argue that it gave rise in the 1950s and 1960s to an intellectual trajectory in scholarship on the Third Reich that has done a fair amount to obscure—rather than illuminate—the logic of Nazi dictatorship, including law’s role in it.

Pseudococcus calceolariae, the citrophilous mealybug, is a species of economic importance. Mating disruption (MD) is a potential control tool. During 2017–2020, trials were conducted to evaluate the potential of P. calceolariae MD in an apple and a tangerine orchard. Two pheromone doses, 6.32 g/ha (2017–2018) and 9.45 g/ha (2019–2020), were tested. The intermediate season (2018–2019) was evaluated without pheromone renewal to study the persistence of the pheromone effect. Male captures in pheromone traps, mealybug population/plant, percentage of infested fruit at harvest and mating disruption index (MDI) were recorded regularly. In both orchards, in the first season, male captures were significantly lower in MD plots compared to control plots, with an MDI > 94% in the first month after pheromone deployment. During the second season, significantly lower male captures in MD plots were still observed, with an average MDI of 80%. At the third season, male captures were again significant lower in MD than control plots shortly after pheromone applications. In both orchards, population by visual inspection and infested fruits were very low, without differences between MD and control plots. These results show the potential use of mating disruption for the control of P. calceolariae.

This essay is a comment on the research program launched by Frank Adloff and Sighard Neckel. My comment is specifically focused on their research agenda as outlined in their trend-setting article, ‘Futures of sustainability as modernization, transformation, and control: A conceptual framework’. The comment is also addressed more generally to the research program of the Humanities Centre for Advanced Studies ‘Futures of Sustainability’. I raise three issues: the first relates to the very idea of the future; the second concerns the notion of social imaginaries and the third question is focused on the idea of social transformation.

TransLighting Group, Inc. consists of two companies all centered around the transportation industry. The original company, TransLighting, was started in 1962 by Henry Phillips. Henry was an engineer with Ford Motor Company specializing in braking wiring systems. Over an eight-year period, he designed and patented several wiring and harness systems that are used in cars as of the 2006 model year. Back in the 1950s Henry had the opportunity to learn about and use LED technology. He even came up with a process using this technology to increase brake light visibility (i.e., the third or middle brake light on most cars). In June 1961 over dinner with another engineering buddy, Bill Acken, Bill figured that they could use this same technology to display roadside messages for motorists. Following license approval from Ford, Bill and Henry started TransLighting in White Lake, Michigan.

Abstract This article explores the anthropometric survey of 5,000 Tibetans by the ethnographer HRH Prince Peter of Greece and Denmark in the northeast Indian Himalayan town of Kalimpong in the 1950s, as part of the Third Danish Expedition to Central Asia. In the context of the crisis created by the Chinese incursion into Tibet in 1950, which pushed thousands of Tibetans into India, stationary field anthropometry, rather than a mobile expedition, became Prince Peter's principal entry into Tibetan worlds. This article explores the scientific paradigms underpinning his anthropometric survey at a time when anthropology had seemingly moved on theoretically and ethically, the historical conditions and contingencies of Prince Peter's research, and the survey's representations of Tibetan peoples and places. We argue that, while Prince Peter's understanding was in essence primordialist, linking particular peoples to particular places, in practice he took a more modernist approach to ‘Tibetaness’ as contingent upon historical processes. The article concludes by reflecting on the potential significance of this vast and unique collection of historic anthropometric data for Tibetans today.

Hands-on laboratory skills play a vital role in providing students with a sound understanding of the scientific fundamentals and their application in solving real-life engineering problems. One of the essential laboratory based courses taught at our Institute is Introduction to Measurements and Instrumentation. The design and implementation of such a course has been well documented in Western engineering education, but presents specific challenges in the Gulf region due to economical, social and cultural factors. This paper discusses the adaptation of corresponding Western courses to undergraduate mechanical engineering studies in the Gulf region. Laboratory exercises for temperature measurement and control are described, which consist of four modules, each building upon the other. In each module, students learn how to design an accurate measuring system, and process and interpret collected data. In the first module, the students are required to build a thermocouple reader using an AD620 instrumentation amplifier and to compare measurements with NIST reference tables. The second module is an introduction to LabVIEW, a graphical data acquisition programming language. The students are required to write a LabVIEW program to record multiple thermocouple signals from a heated plate under varying convective cooling conditions, using a high resolution temperature logger with on-board signal conditioning. The third and fourth modules focus on temperature control techniques. In the third laboratory exercise, the students are required to construct an electrical circuit using a low-power PCB relay and NPN bipolar transistor to develop a bang-bang linear temperature controller. The program created in module two is modified to have the heater operation automatically controlled for a fixed temperature set point. In module four, the students replace the bang-bang controller built in the previous lab with a commercially available PID controller and explore the differences between PID and linear temperature control systems. For each module, students are required to submit a formal report covering the theoretical background, the experimental procedure employed, uncertainty analysis, and conclusions and recommendations. An effective teaching strategy is outlined that covers the fundamental concepts of temperature measurement and control through carefully designed experiments, with sample results presented. Emphasis is placed on the tailoring of the course topics to engineering education in the Gulf region.

Wireless technologies are incorporated in implantable devices since at least the 1950s. With remote data collection and control of implantable devices, these wireless technologies help researchers and clinicians to better understand diseases and to improve medical treatments. Today, wireless technologies are still more commonly used for research, with limited applications in a number of clinical implantable devices. Recent development and standardization of wireless technologies present a good opportunity for their wider use in other types of implantable devices, which will significantly improve the outcomes of many diseases or injuries. This review briefly describes some common wireless technologies and modern advancements, as well as their strengths and suitability for use in implantable medical devices. The applications of these wireless technologies in treatments of orthopedic and cardiovascular injuries and disorders are described. This review then concludes with a discussion on the technical challenges and potential solutions of implementing wireless technologies in implantable devices.

Este artigo reflete sobre a resposta apresentada por Bernard Lonergan quanto ao desejo natural pela visão beatífica, uma questão clássica da teologia. Compõe-se de três seções. A primeira fornece uma breve história da questão. Na segunda, o autor considera a resposta dada por Lonergan durante o primeiro período de seu magistério, nos anos 50. A resposta é articulada no contexto da Escolástica tradicional, mas já integra algumas importantes correções de perspectiva, especialmente no que se refere à introdução do conceito de finalidade vertical. Na terceira seção, o autor considera a resposta de Lonergan após sua transição da capacidade psicológica para as operações da consciência intencional, as quais permitiram que ele realinhasse toda a questão com sua resposta original.ABSTRACT: This paper studies the answer proposed by Bernard Lonergan, with regard to a classic issue of theology, namely, the natural desire for the beatific vision. The paper is divided into three sections. The first section provides a brief history of the issue. In the second part, the author considers the answer given by Lonergan during the first period of his teaching in the 1950s. The response is articulated within the traditional Scholastic setting, but already with some important perspective corrections, especially with the introduction of the concept of vertical finality. In the third section of this paper, the author addresses the answer given by Lonergan after his transition from the psycholocal faculty to the operations of intentional consciousness, which allowed him to realign the whole question with his original response.
