This work analyzes some aspects on which the development of critical thinking is based starting with the contributions of critical theory to the educommunicative perspective, as a bedrock for reflection on the media. This work reviews the characteristics of the critical subject and differentiates between critical reading and critical thinking. The former works as an analytic strategy that searches the re-reading of texts or audiovisual messages to identify categories attached to discussion and interpretation; the latter highlights ways to learn to think autonomously which leads to the proposal of interpretation strategies that target creative thinking. The objective of this article is to present orientations coming from Social Communication as an academic discipline that sustain Critical Readings conceived as educommunicative strategies. The methodology used to develop this study is the review of documents and content analysis. The result is a guide that proposes actions for critical media readings in the classroom. The conclusion is that the promotion of a critical attitude involves identifying the political personality of the cultural industry and the communicational process; it means constant questioning of the transparency of media messages, with the aim of creating independent, inquisitive and creative citizens. El presente trabajo analiza algunos aspectos sobre los que se sustenta el desarrollo del pensamiento crítico. Se parte de los aportes que la Teoría Crítica brinda a la perspectiva educomunicativa, como base para la reflexión en torno a los medios. Este trabajo se justifica en la medida en que se reflexiona sobre algunas dimensiones del sujeto crítico, y que diferencia entre lectura crítica y pensamiento crítico. La primera funciona como estrategia de tipo analítico que busca la re-lectura de los textos o los mensajes audiovisuales, con el fin de identificar categorías sujetas a discusión e interpretación. El segundo apunta a una propuesta de aprender a pensar de manera autónoma, lo que conlleva el proponer estrategias de interpretación que apunten al pensamiento creativo. El objetivo del presente artículo es mostrar algunas orientaciones que, desde la comunicación social como disciplina, sustentan a las lecturas críticas concebidas como estrategias educomunicativas. La metodología utilizada en este estudio es la revisión documental y el análisis de contenido. El resultado final es una guía en la que se proponen acciones para realizar lecturas críticas de medios en el aula. Se concluye que promover la actitud crítica, implica identificar el carácter político de la industria cultural y del proceso comunicacional; supone sospechar de la transparencia de los mensajes mediáticos y apunta a conformar un ciudadano independiente, cuestionador y creativo.

This article discusses the role of a politically mobilized diaspora in the media and politics of Bahrain. The political turmoil of several decades has resulted in the exile of a sizeable community of Bahrainis, and many key activists have settled in London. From here they continue to work with a variety of political activities and a variety of media to put pressure on both Gulf and European regimes. The article traces the development of media forms, from a print newspaper formed out of the diasporic experience, via a particular community-driven homepage opened in Bahrain in 1998, whose creator fled to London after the 2011 ‘Arab Spring’ uprising, to the diversity of the social media that now dominates. In this regard, the role of digital surveillance, and subsequent demobilization and increasing silence, are key to the discussion.

The article considers possibilities of integration of some Media Literacy topics with the Ukrainian Language curriculum topics (the Ukrainian Language is viewed here as an academic discipline for professional direction). Different possibilities of the use of certain Media Literacy topics during the Ukrainian Language classes are analyzed. Efficiency of such integration is investigated. It is proved that due to integration students learn skills that help them to understand and evaluate complex messages they receive from mass media, identify bias, misinformation and lies, and recognize what the media maker wants them to believe or do. Research results show that integration of Media Literacy with the Ukrainian Language as an academic discipline facilitates better understanding of media messages and prevents manipulation of students’ consciousness.

RESUMEN: El discurso pastoral del Papa Francisco representa una teología de la cultura situada que llama a discernir sobre violencia-misericordia. El Papa denuncia los resultados del sistema y ataca sus causas. Comprenderlo implica una reflexión académica interdisciplinar sobre las características de la cultura actual que actúan como condición del discernimiento. Reflexionando de manera situada, se observan cambios tecnológicos significativos en los medios de comunicación que generan transformaciones en la cultura de un Estado moderno que aún continua pero que, en el siglo XXI, da signos de un giro postsecular donde lo político requiere nuevamente de lo teológico, no ya como fundamento sino como pensamiento crítico que tienda a desacralizar dioses mortales. Se presentarán, en un intento de diálogo interdisciplinario, los puntos de vista de cuatro autores: Antonio Spadaro SJ y su noción de cultura ciberespacial desterritorializada; Giacomo Marramao y su noción de postsecularismo y constitución de identidad; Miguel Yañez SJ y su interpretación de pobreza como violencia; y Luis Sarasa SJ con su lectura bíblica de la reconciliación en la tensión del conflicto.ABSTRACT: The pastoral discourse of Pope Francis represents a theology of the culture situated that calls to discern on violence-mercy. The Pope denounces the results of the system and attacks its causes. To understand it implies an interdis­ciplinary academic reflection on the characteristics of the current culture that act as a condition of discernment. Reflecting in a situated way, there are significant technological changes in the media that generate transformations in the culture of a modern state that still continues but which, in the 21st century, shows signs of a postsecular turn where the political again requires theological, not as a foundation but as critical thinking that tends to desacralize mortal gods. In an attempt for interdisciplinary dialogue, the views of four authors will be presented: Antonio Spadaro SJ and his notion of deterritorialized cyberspace culture; Giacomo Mar­ramao and his notion of postsecularism and constitution of identity; Miguel Yañez SJ and his interpretation of poverty as violence; and Luis Sarasa SJ with his biblical reading of reconciliation in the tension of conflict.

Summary: The body of evidence suggests that there is a causal association between nonfictional media reporting of suicide (in newspapers, on television, and in books) and actual suicide, and that there may be one between fictional media portrayal (in film and television, in music, and in plays) and actual suicide. This finding has been explained by social learning theory. The majority of studies upon which this finding is based fall into the media “effects tradition,” which has been criticized for its positivist-like approach that fails to take into account of media content or the capacity of audiences to make meaning out of messages. A cultural studies approach that relies on discourse and frame analyses to explore meanings, and that qualitatively examines the multiple meanings that audiences give to media messages, could complement the effects tradition. Together, these approaches have the potential to clarify the notion of what constitutes responsible reporting of suicide, and to broaden the framework for evaluating media performance.

With this work, we aim to propose a didactic application of the news genre, from the perspective of critical reading practices in Portuguese language teaching, to approach the experiences of dissident gender and sexuality people who are being viewed and represented by the media hegemonic in Brazil. Therefore, we offer teachers 5 texts and 10 activities that can be used for the development of a didactic project that articulates several areas of knowledge and that is also built from an educational vision that dialogues reading, criticism , teaching, learning, assessment and self-assessment. In this sense, due to the theme we are dealing with, we assume a political-epistemological tone combating gender and sexual violence, with education being our battlefield.

 Abstract Generally speaking, media is extensively used as the means to disseminate news and information pertaining to business, social, political and religious concerns. A portion of the time and space of media has now become an important device to generate economic and social activities that include advertising, marketing, recreation and entertainment. The Government regards them as an essential form of relaying news and information to its citizens and at the same time utilizes them as a powerful public relations’ mechanism. The effects of media are many and diverse, which can either be short or long term depending on the news and information. The effects of media can be found on various fronts, ranging from the political, economic and social, to even religious spheres. Some of the negative effects arising from the media are cultural and social influences, crimes and violence, sexual obscenities and pornography as well as liberalistic and extreme ideologies. This paper sheds light on these issues and draws principles from Islam to overcome them. Islam as revealed to humanity contains the necessary guidelines to nurture and mould the personality of individuals and shape them into good servants. Key Words: Media, Negative Effects, Means, Islam and Principles. Abstrak Secara umum, media secara meluas digunakan sebagai sarana untuk menyebarkan berita dan maklumat yang berkaitan dengan perniagaan, kemasyarakatan, pertimbangan politik dan agama. Sebahagian dari ruang dan masa media kini telah menjadi peranti penting untuk menghasilkan kegiatan ekonomi dan sosial yang meliputi pengiklanan, pemasaran, rekreasi dan hiburan. Kerajaan menganggap sarana-sarana ini sebagai wadah penting untuk menyampaikan berita dan maklumat kepada warganya dan pada masa yang sama juga menggunakannya sebagai mekanisme perhubungan awam yang berpengaruh. Pengaruh media sangat banyak dan pelbagai, samada berbentuk jangka pendek atau panjang bergantung kepada berita dan maklumat yang brekenaan. Kesan dari media boleh didapati mempengaruhi pelbagai aspek, bermula dari bidang politik, ekonomi, sosial bahkan juga agama. Beberapa kesan negatif yang timbul dari media ialah pengaruhnya terhadap budaya dan sosial, jenayah dan keganasan, kelucahan seksual dan pornografi serta ideologi yang liberal dan ekstrim. Kertas ini menyoroti isu-isu ini dan cuba mengambil prinsip-prinsip dari ajaran Islam untuk mengatasinya. Tujuan Islam itu sendiri diturunkan kepada umat manusia ialah untuk menjadi pedoman yang diperlukan untuk membina dan membentuk keperibadian individu dan menjadikan manusia hamba yang taat kepada Tuhannya. Bossa Mundo chronicles how Brazilian music has been central to Brazil’s national brand in the United States and the United Kingdom since the late 1950s. Scholarly texts on Brazilian popular music generally focus on questions of music and national identity, and when they discuss the music’s international popularity, they keep the artists, recordings, and live performances as the focus, ignoring the process of transnational mediation. This book fills a major gap in Brazilian music studies by analyzing the consequences of moments when Brazilian music was popular in Anglophone markets, with a focus on the media industries. With subject matter as varied as jazz, film music, dance fads, DJ/remix culture, and new models of musical distribution, the book demonstrates how the mediation of Brazilian music in an increasingly crowded transnational marketplace has had lasting consequences for the creative output celebrated by Brazil as part of its national brand. Through a discussion of the political meaning of mass-mediated music in chronologically organized chapters, the book shifts the scholarly focus on the music’s transnational popularity from the scholarly framework of representing Otherness to broader considerations of a media environment where listeners and intermediaries often have differing priorities. The book provides a new model for studying music from culturally rich countries in the Global South where local governments often leverage stereotypes in their national branding project.

This article offers a reading of Plato in light of the recent debates concerning the unique ‘ontology’ of International Relations (IR) as an academic discipline. In particular, this article suggests that Plato’s metaphysical account of the integral connection between human individual, the domestic state and world order can offer IR an alternative outlook to the ‘political scientific’ schema of ‘levels of analysis’. This article argues that Plato’s metaphysical conception of world order can not only provide IR theory with a way to re-imagine the relation between the human, the state and world order. Moreover, Plato’s outlook can highlight or even call into question the post-metaphysical presuppositions of contemporary IR theory in its ‘borrowed ontology’ from modern social science, which can in turn facilitate IR’s re-interpretation of its own ‘ontology’ as well as its distinct contributions to the understanding of the various aspects of the social world and human life.
