A Symbiotic Model for Information Systems Success Determination

Traditional approaches to identifying and measuring Information Systems success or failure typically suffer from two deficiencies. First, the measures are taken at a single point in time, usually shortly after the system adoption with a focus on the implementation “success.” Second, the focus is purely on the organisational net gain or loss. The organisation is treated as a single entity, and the Information System itself is relegated to a subservient cog. The power relationship between the organisation and the Information System is left unexplored: in other words, which entity controls the other? This chapter proposes and demonstrates an alternate categorisation model that addresses both deficiencies. The model is applied to a longitudinal study of an implementation of an enterprise system in order to both categorise and explain the outcomes for the host organisation.

This chapter examines the Information Systems success model in the Egyptian context. Much of the existing literature on information system success focuses primarily on the private sector. There are fewer studies that examine success in the context of the development of e-government. This study focuses specifically on local e-government development of projects in Egypt. A survey is administered in three local governments on actual users of Information Systems. The results of this study confirm much of the existing research on information system success, but highlight the importance of net benefit as a success factor that examines the organizational and managerial context of e-government development. The importance of this research indicates that managerial functions matter for the success of e-government projects.

Information System success is difficult to measure directly. Because of the influence of non-controllable variables, it actually seems to be impossible to directly compute or determine the contribution of Information Systems to organizational performance, or to overall organizational effectiveness. As an alternative, perception of system success is often used as a surrogate measure. However, this raises the question of the validity of this surrogate measure. In this chapter, the authors describe a survey aiming to investigate the validity of this surrogate measure. Results show that there is reason to doubt the usefulness and validity of surrogate measures for objective system success.

The Expectation-Confirmation Model of Information Systems Continuance (ECM-IS) explains antecedents that influence IS users’ behavior and affect their decision whether to continue or discontinue information system (IS) using. ECM-IS emphasizes differences between initial acceptance and IS continuance. For companies that deal with the design and software development, IS continuance is retaining of existing customers of product and services. This study extends the ECM-IS by accounting for unobserved heterogeneity. The Finite Mixture Partial Least Squares (FIMIX-PLS) methodology is applied for identification of distinctive customer segments. Segmentation of IS users was made on the basis of cognitive beliefs and affect influencing one’s intention to continue using IS and two different segments of users were derived. The first segment comprises 65.6%, and the other one 34.4% users. The ECM-IS explained 51.9% of IS continuance intention and 20.7% of satisfaction for the first segment, while for the second segment the ECM-IS explained 98.1% of IS continuance intention and 91.3% of satisfaction.

The paper describes reality method sand geographical information systems (GIS- technologies) in integration GIS system. Sjenica is a specific area of the our state and therefore must notes of all elements and factors in environmental. GISs differ from the other types of information systems in that they manage huge quantities of data, enquire complex concepts to describe the geometry of objects and specify complex topological relationship between them. The paper describes our proposal for the project GIS for local community of Sjenica based on GIS technologies, with particular reference to the GIS demands and possibilities.

E-learning involves adopting and exploiting the potential of new, advanced Information Technology in development and delivery of education. In spite of a rapid growth in the e-learning field there still exists a range of issues facing the stakeholders of e-learning systems. One of the key issues is how to measure e-learning system success. Although considerable attention has been paid to the Information Systems success issue, there remain arguments about the factors which are most effective for measuring Information System success. The issue of measuring Information System success has an impact on evaluating e-learning systems success. This chapter aims to fill this void by proposing an evaluation methodology model to assess e-learning systems success. The contribution of this study is the proposed model to evaluate the success of e-learning systems. The model is based on a thorough review of the e-learning success literature and existing Information Systems success models.

Legacy Information Systems play key-roles on organizations development and growth. However, they can be considered as risky factor to operations chain whether they do not meet the demanding or become acting as single point of failures. In this work, we propose a migration model which is able to handle systems that depend on Relational Databases and its changes were driven through the use of a distributed middleware. We also pose how this approach was successfully applied while migrating a Legacy Information System to a Cloud Computing based infra-structure, adding fault-tolerance to its architecture as a competitive advantage, enabling the related services to be clustered and then horizontal scaled on demand. All major concerns on how the whole solution and its aggregated tools were conceived are discussed in high-level details, so them can be solely reproduced and integrated to another systems in order to achieve the same goals or improve its level of quality assurance.

Businesses can change their business structure by merging with other companies or, on the other end of the spectrum, by smoothly outsourcing some of their business processes to other more specialized parties. In this paper we will concentrate on conceptual modelling of merging and outsourcing information systems. Merging of a collection of information systems will be defined as the construction of a global information system that contains exactly the functionality of the original collection of systems. Such global information systems are called federated information systems, when we wish to address the situation where the component systems are so-called legacy systems; i.e. systems that are given beforehand and which are to interoperate in an integrated single framework in which the legacy systems are to maintain as much as possible their respective autonomy. Two major problems in constructing federated information systems concern achieving and maintaining consistency and a uniform representation of the data on the global level of the federation. The process of creation of uniform representations of data is known as data extraction, whereas data reconciliation is concerned with resolving data inconsistencies. Outsourcing of an information system, on the other hand, will be defined as the handing over of part of the functionality of the original system to an outside party (the supplier). Such functionality typically involves one or more operations, where each operation satisfies certain input- and output requirements. These requirements will be defined in terms of the ruling service level agreements (SLAs). We will provide a formal means to ensure that the outsourcing relationship between outsourcing party and supplier, determined by a SLA, satisfies specific correctness criteria. Formal specifications as offered in this paper can prove their value in the setup and evaluation of outsourcing contracts. We shall describe a uniform semantic framework for specification of both federated and outsourced information systems based on the UML/OCL data model. In particular, we will show that we can represent so-called exact views in UML/OCL, providing the means to capture the duality relation between federating and outsourcing.
