E-Learning Technologies for Effective Teaching

Information and Communication Technology (ICT) is extensively used in delivering e-learning. The effective use of technology in e-learning fosters learning and communication. E-learning technologies provide dynamism and increase in learning possibilities all over the world. The application of e-learning in education has already changed the organization and delivery of education. E-learning technologies and tools are increasing every day thus it is necessary to learn and know their properties in order to use them effectively. It is also important to know the learners and their skills for e-learning technologies. Digital Pedagogy emerged in response to this challenge; it effectively enhances and transforms teaching and learning to provide rich, diverse and flexible learning opportunities for a digital generation. For effective e-learning an instructor must focus less on lecturing and content presentation, and more on assisting learners in creating personal learning or knowledge networks. Virtual class tools, chat or instant messaging, voice over IP, asynchronous tools, forums, email utilities, blogs, wikis and other asynchronous and synchronous tools are commonly used technological tools. This chapter explores the way in which e-learning technologies have caused a revolution in education, allowing learning to be individualized, enhancing interactions and changing the role of the classical teacher into facilitator.

PurposeThe use of information and communication technologies (ICTs) has become a major driving force in transforming education worldwide. Similarly, in the last ten years, the usage of ICTs and e-learning in Pakistan has increased. Whereas the latest educational policy of the Government of Pakistan has focused on using ICTs and e-learning in schools and universities. The national professional standards for teachers have also suggested teachers to integrate ICTs in their classrooms and develop e-learning platforms for teaching and learning processes. However, in this study the effectiveness of information and communication and e-learning technologies integration in teaching and learning has been assessed. The context selected for this research study is a public university of Sindh, Pakistan. The research gap, which has been founded through the extensive literature review, indicated that most of the students are not able to utilize ICTs effectively. The first objective of this study is to enable students to gain wider range of knowledge and access Internet for developing a global outlook. Moreover, the second objective of this study is to develop students' capabilities of processing information more effectively and efficiently for teaching and learning.Design/methodology/approachBy nature, this study is quantitative survey-based research study. For this purpose, data has been collected from students and teachers of English, Computer Science and Business Administration departments of targeted university, survey questionnaires have been adopted as a data collection tool. Whereas the random sampling technique is used for the collection of data by using Morgan table of sample size. Additionally, data has been collected from 100 participants, 80 of them were students and 20 were teachers, and data has been analyzed by using SPSS 22.0 software.FindingsThe findings of this study have indicated the student's level of interest toward the integration of ICTs and e-learning in science and social science courses. Similarly, the findings specify that through ICT and e-learning materials, students can learn more effectively, which can also facilitate teachers for their teaching process in this modern era of technology. Whereas the issue that has been specified through the findings is that the teachers are not encouraged by the management of the university to implement the ICT in their teaching and learning due to their concerns on the limited resources and lack of competencies.Practical implicationsFor the practical implication, the findings of this study will facilitate the teachers and learners for integrating the ICTs and e-learning in their course curriculums and interactive teaching practices as per modern era of technology. Also, this study will help the provincial leader and policymakers by addressing the teachers’ concern to encourage the integration of ICT tools and develop capabilities for interactive classrooms for effective teaching and learning.Originality/valueThis is the first study of its nature that has been conducted in the Pakistani public university in rural setting, and the finding of this study will facilitate and help the institutional and government stakeholders to where and how they can effectively integrate ICTs and e-learning in classrooms for interactive teaching and learning processes in the rural Sindh.

We are living in an era of technology where everything demands knowledge, understanding, and handling of digital technology. Technology has renewed all spheres of social and professional lives and in this regard teaching and communication are not exceptional. Effective use of technology for real Communication is widely followed in teaching and teachers need to know the use of ICTs in classrooms for delivering lessons to inculcate sound knowledge and understanding of concepts. It is found that despite the significant impacts of ICTs on teaching and learning teachers are reluctant to use technical aids in the classroom. They report various issues that hamper them to use technology in their day-to-day teaching practices; moreover, a majority of teaching professionals are not convinced that they can make their teaching more and more effective by using technology. The paper aims to find out the CHALLENGES THE teachers face to use ICTs in classrooms and perceptions of teachers about the same. A qualitative research method was used to carry out the study.  A well-designed questionnaire comprising of open-ended questions was served to randomly selected serving teachers from government schools of District Khairpur. The responses of the participants were analyzed to identify the challenges faced by the teachers while using ICT during the teaching and learning process. The collected data was analyzed and it was found out that teachers find it difficult to use technology in classrooms because they are not provided appropriate computers, technical support, and professional training to learn to use technology. It was also identified that because of time constraints teachers are unable to use ICTs in their teaching practices. Further, it was explored that teachers believe that teachers have limited perceptions about technology as they hold the view that technology just wastage their time. Based on findings, it was concluded that the integration of ICT tools is highly effective as it makes students more creative, productive, and hard-working as compared to traditionally managed classrooms. Schools administrations should provide not only the technology but also technical assistance to the teachers. Schools administrations need to help teachers to know the importance of ICTs and to use it for a meaningful purpose to improve the standard of education.

The rapid informatization process of the education system has created both the opportunities and the need for the use of e-books in education. E-books allow students to actively participate in the learning process, to personalize their learning, to gain new knowledge and to evaluate their own abilities. The e-textbook also enriches traditional forms of learning, encompassing a large amount of teaching and learning materials and stimulating the development of new teaching methods. In our opinion, it is time to switch to electronic and interactive formats in the development of electronic aids and textbooks in universities. One of the leading directions in the use of information and communication technologies today is the effective use of computers in educational activities. The main issue in implementing this activity is the selection of e-learning resources that will improve the quality of education.

Technology can be a powerful tool for transforming learning. To be a successful teacher one should be learner always and should have the mind to comprehend and design new methodologies in their transaction process. ELearning courseware is an effective model of teaching and learning framework that can enhance academic achievement of students. In this research, E-Learning courseware is developed for B.Ed curriculum and the effectiveness of E-Learning courseware is studied on academic achievement of Prospective teachers studying B.Ed course. 80 students studying B.Ed. course are selected as sample by convenient sampling method. 40 of which are assigned in the experimental group and 40 in the control group. Experimental Group is subjected to E-Learning courseware and the Control group is subjected to Conventional method of teaching, Pre-test – Post Test non-equivalent groups design is used for the study. Achievement test developed and validated by the researcher is administered to measure the academic achievement of the prospective teachers as pre-test and post-test. Effectiveness of E-Learning courseware is studied on academic achievement of Prospective teachers studying B.Ed course. In the analysis of data, t-test and descriptive analysis were used. Results showed that there is significant effect of ELearning courseware in enhancing the academic achievement of Prospective Teachers. This research opens new avenues in teaching learning process which can empower students.

The development of information and communication technology is now a major effect on manyaspects of life, even human behavior and activities are now a lot depends on the information andcommunication technology. One example is the use of technology in teaching and learning, namely withthe game. The game is already familiar to the students. When students are lazy to read books whilestudying, they are cool to play games. Therefore, the author makes an effective solution in learning sothat they are not lazy to study. This game was designed with the concept of 2D so it can be run onsmartphones that have lower specs. To build this game, the author uses Unity 3D 5.4. So, students canlearn with pleasure and do not get bored while studying.

For obtaining benefits from using Information and Communication Technology (ICT) in education sector, technical and management aspects related to the use of ICT are needed. This literature review article focuses on assessing managerial aspects that influence deployment of e-learning technologies. Provision of details in each managerial dimension attempted to cover description of their significance, and the extent to which they influence adoption and usage of e-learning technologies. Key considerations were also extracted and presented as benchmarks for smooth practicality. A stock of existing literature n=81 devoted to the study, were reviewed to capture the specific themes for extracting arguments to acquire a wider perspective of the findings. The downloaded literature was categorised thematically and timely to capture a review of themes and trends on appreciable increase of usage or adoption published respectively. The process supported by NVivo software (version 12). From the findings training seemed the most discussed and considered managerial factor in terms of its significance and influence. It might be so due to its nature and need as it has to be conducted from the initial stage and continuously. The literature seems to be concerned with managerial aspects facilitating e-learning technologies in a holistic way, for stance combining different aspects of training, ultimately reflecting a high level of training aspect analysed. Still, despite some of these aspects being dubbed ‘all inclusive’, many tend to be little reported if we consider the possibilities in terms of those managerial dimensions.

Higher Educational Institutions (HEIs) can be slow in responding to technological innovation. Streaming technology offers a competitive advantage to a HEI if appropriately adopted and integrated with the marketing strategy compared to the Push-Pull strategy: when all available technological innovation is used to push educational options to the market and the potential people pull from the market. This chapter briefly describes the concepts of e-learning and media streaming, and their relationship to HEIs. The intangible business benefits of using media streaming to enhance teaching and learning in HEIs are explored through a literature review and small sample survey. The case study of a UK university is used to represent a HEI; e-learning technology is already in use within the university, considering the integration of media streaming technology into new or existing learning technologies. The hardware and software requirements are briefly examined, and possible business concerns and risks are identified with recommendations.

Instant messaging and text chat, online collaborative whiteboards, web conferencing and other synchronous Web 2.0 tools are increasingly finding their way into higher education and are available in both commercially-branded and open source varieties. This chapter describes excellent practices and challenges in using these tools for synchronous and blended course delivery, collaboration, learning activities, and technical support, based on the author’s experience in online education and online-teaching support. Synchronous tools can provide immediate and efficient communication for instructors, learners and support staff, foster community and establish a heightened sense of social presence. An increasing number of practitioners in the field of distance learning are using synchronous tools to reach their learning and support objectives (Murphy and Rodríguez Manzanares, 2008). Today, institutions have a whole menu of synchronous tools to choose from, ranging from free and open-source software to more costly commercial enterprise systems. These tools enable education and support for teaching and learning to happen across great distances and on all types of mobile and not-so-mobile computer devices. This chapter will describe some of these tools, the types of needs that drive their use, and strategies for effective use and implementation.

The standards for mathematical practice describe varieties of expertise that mathematics educators should develop in their students, including NCTM process standards (problem solving, reasoning and proof, communication, representation, and connections), NRC's report “Adding It Up” (adaptive reasoning, strategic competence, conceptual understanding, procedural fluency, and productive disposition), common core state standards in mathematics (ICT application) to support mathematics teaching and learning. There is a need to provide effective ways that technology can be integrated into mathematics classrooms. Mathematical methods and techniques are typically used in engineering and industrial fields. It can also become an interdisciplinary subject motivated by engineers' needs. Mathematical problems in engineering result in rigorous engineering application carried out by mathematical tools. Therefore, a solid understanding and command of mathematical knowledge is very necessary. This chapter presents the introduction of currently available ICTs and their application of to create e-learning environments to prepare for the students' future engineering education.
