The Importance of a Collaboratory

Researchers have identified active collaborative learning and membership in learning communities as factors that facilitate the engagement of learners. In the reported student engagement study, a commercially available software utility was used to establish such an environment in a computer laboratory. This chapter addresses the following issues: will collaborative learning result in more student engagement and what type of software will support such activity? The collected data includes anonymous survey responses, mean marks for assessable components, and tutorial attendance figures for 2011 (pre-intervention) and 2012 (post-intervention) and 2013 (modified content with post-intervention style delivery). Freeform responses in the anonymous student survey were positive towards the experience. In 2012 with respect to those of 2011, mean assignment and tutorial participation marks for the students improved, while those for other assessable components appeared to have worsened. Student engagement, as reflected in tutorial attendance and assignment marks, were better in 2012. In 2013, the study was repeated with the focus of the tutorials changed to group problem solving with the tutorial participation reflecting student contributions during such sessions. The mean marks for the exam, the laboratory participation and for the course improved over those for 2012 and 2011, respectively. The other means slightly improved over those for 2011 but were slightly worse for those for 2012.

The present study aimed to investigate the effects of geometry instruction activities conducted in nature based on modeling, game-based, and cooperative learning methods on achievement, mathematical motivation, and visual mathematical literacy perceptions of third-grade elementary school students. The present study is a quantitative study conducted with a pre-test/post-test experimental design with a control group. The study was conducted with 61 students (35 students in the experimental group and 26 students in the control group). Modeling-, game-, and collaborative learning-based activities were conducted with the students in the experimental group. It was determined that the achievements of students who were instructed with modeling-based activities in geometry were high when compared to that of the students instructed with collaborative learning- and game-based methods, and those in the control group where no intervention was applied. This group was followed by the game-based and collaborative learning groups. Based on the variable of motivation, the mean motivation of the students in the modeling group was higher when compared to that of the students in the collaborative learning, game-based, and conventional instruction groups. This group was followed by the collaborative and game-based learning groups. Also, based on the visual mathematical literacy perception variable, the mean visual mathematics literacy perception of the students in the collaborative learning group was higher when compared to that of the students in the groups where the modeling, game-based, and conventional instruction methods were used. This group was followed by the modeling and game-based learning groups.

The methodology that increases the student interest and provides modern knowledge to the study of the p-n junction theory has been proposed. It is based on two methods: increasing the interest of students using a new approach in derivation of equations of the law of the junction that allows obtaining more comprehensive knowledge about the operation of the p-n junctions and engaging students using the storytelling technique. The reaction of students to the lecture, obtained statistics on the student activity and the results of the student survey show that the proposed methodology allows increasing the student engagement in the p-n junction theory lectures.

Background. Occupational therapy (OT) may be an important intervention in patients with COPD, but studies show conflicting results. Purpose. To evaluate the effectiveness of home-based monodisciplinary OT in COPD patients Method. We conducted an observational clinical study. Main outcomes were the mean differences in the Canadian Occupational Performance Measure (COPM) performance and satisfaction scores, pre and post intervention. Findings. Pre- and postintervention data were obtained from 41 patients. Statistically significant increases were observed in COPM performance (5.0 ± 1.1 versus 6.9 ± 0.9; P<0.001) and satisfaction (4.6 ± 1.3 versus 6.9 ± 1.0; P<0.001). The most frequently reported occupational performance problems were found in the domains of productivity (47%) and mobility (40%), fewer in self-care (10%) and the least in leisure (3%). Implications. Home-based monodisciplinary OT can contribute significantly to the improvement of daily functioning of patients with COPD. OT should therefore be considered more often as part of the integrated management of these patients.

Objective The aim was to evaluate the utility of frailty, as defined by the modified Frailty Index-1 1 (mFI-11) on predicting outcomes following endovascular revascularisation in Asian patients with chronic limb-threatening ischaemia (CLTI). Methods CLTI patients who underwent endovascular revascularisation between January 2015 and March 2017 were included. Patients were retrospectively scored using the mFI-11 to categorise frailty as low, medium or high risk. Observed outcomes included 30-day complication rate and unplanned readmissions, 1-, 6- and 12-month mortality, and ambulation status at 6- and 12 months post-intervention. Results A total of 233 patients (250 procedures) were included; 137 (58.8%) were males and the mean age was 69.0 (±10.7) years. 202/233 (86.7%) were diabetic and 196/233 (84.1%) had a prior diagnosis of peripheral arterial disease (PAD). The mean mFI-11 score was 4.2 (±1.5). 28/233 (12.0%), 155/233 (66.5%), and 50/233 (21.5%) patients were deemed low (mF-11 score 0–2), moderate (mFI-11 score 3–5) and high (mFI-11 score 5–7) frailty risk, respectively. High frailty was associated with an increased 12-month mortality (OR 8.54, 95% CI 1.05–69.5; p = 0.05), 30-day complication rate (OR 9.41, 95% CI 2.01–44.1; p < 0.01) and 30-day unplanned readmission (OR 5.06, 95% CI 1.06–24.2; p = 0.04). Furthermore, a high score was associated with a significantly worse 6- (OR 0.320, 95% CI 0.120–0.840; p = 0.02) and 12-month (OR 0.270, 95% CI 0.100–0.710; p < 0.01) ambulatory status. Conclusion The mFI-11 is a useful, non-invasive tool that can be readily calculated using readily available patient data, for prediction of medium-term outcomes for Asian CLTI patients following endovascular revascularisation. Early recognition of short- and mid-term loss of ambulation status amongst high-frailty patients in this challenging cohort of patients could aid decision-making for whether a revascularisation or amputation-first policy is appropriate, and manage patient and caregiver expectations on potential improvement in functional outcome.

The application of mass collaboration in different areas of study and work has been increasing over the last few decades. For example, in the education context, this emerging paradigm has opened new opportunities for participatory learning, namely, “mass collaborative learning (MCL)”. The development of such an innovative and complementary method of learning, which can lead to the creation of knowledge-based communities, has helped to reap the benefits of diversity and inclusion in the creation and development of knowledge. In other words, MCL allows for enhanced connectivity among the people involved, providing them with the opportunity to practice learning collectively. Despite recent advances, this area still faces many challenges, such as a lack of common agreement about the main concepts, components, applicable structures, relationships among the participants, as well as applicable assessment systems. From this perspective, this study proposes a meta-governance framework that benefits from various other related ideas, models, and methods that together can better support the implementation, execution, and development of mass collaborative learning communities. The proposed framework was applied to two case-study projects in which vocational education and training respond to the needs of collaborative education–enterprise approaches. It was also further used in an illustration of the MCL community called the “community of cooks”. Results from these application cases are discussed.

Student engagement is an important predictor of choosing science-related careers and establishing a scientifically literate society: and, worryingly, it is on the decline internationally. Conceptions of science are strongly affected by school experience, so one strategy is to bring successful science communication strategies to the classroom. Through a project creating short science films on mobile devices, students' engagement greatly increased through collaborative learning and the storytelling process. Teachers were also able to achieve cross-curricular goals between science, technology, and literacy. We argue that empowering adolescents as storytellers, rather than storylisteners, is an effective method to increase engagement with science.

In this comprehensive evaluation of Educated Choices Program’s educational intervention, we report on our analysis of 95,241 student survey responses. We are excited to share these findings for a number of reasons. First and foremost, our analysis clearly demonstrates the effectiveness of this educational intervention in positively impacting student attitudes, behavioral intentions and self-reported behaviors in regard to their food choices. The scale of the dataset and the comprehensive nature of the analyses conducted provides a strong basis for funding considerations for educational interventions. This is particularly heartening because similar impacts have been difficult to find in other consumer-facing advocacy interventions. As will be highlighted later in the report, ECP’s model of intervention is both high quality and cost effective, allaying some fears about the feasibility of deploying effective interventions of this nature on a large scale.

<span>Lacking knowledge among adolescents affects their understanding of some problems related to sexual-reproduction health. Electronic media recognized as the favored source of information for adolescents. This research aimed to assess the effect of audio-visual media to the increasing of sexual-reproduction knowledge. We conducted a before and after without control informal experimental study design into 153 students in the 1st-3rd grade of junior high school. The effect of the intervention was assessed through the difference between pre- and post-intervention by using the Wilcoxon test. The mean score of the respondent pre and post-intervention was significantly increasing. The audiovisual increased the knowledge of the adolescent regarding sexual-reproduction health</span>
