Social networking sites are changing the way in which young people develop and maintain friendships and relationships. This study investigated the relationship between level of Facebook addiction, Facebook behaviors, gender, and intimacy development in emerging adults. Participants were 273 university students aged 18 to 25. They completed an online questionnaire that measured their level of Facebook addiction, what they do on Facebook, and their ability to form intimate relationships. A gender difference was found with long distance, passive, active photo, and organizing behaviors relating to high levels of Facebook addiction in females, whereas gaming was related to high levels of Facebook addiction in males. Intimacy development was related to high Facebook use and long distance, active photo, and organizing behaviors, but not to the level of Facebook addiction. Implications regarding the identification of at-risk for addiction emerging adults are discussed.

The growing use of social networking sites places them among the most popular online activities. In particular, Facebook is gaining increasing numbers of users. For some individuals, such activity can develop into addictive online behaviour. The main objective of this study was to assess the influence of sociodemographic (e.g., gender, age), individual (e.g., differentiation of self), and family (e.g., family communication) factors on Facebook addiction in Portuguese emerging adults aged between 18 and 30 years. The study included 403 participants, who followed a protocol in which several instruments were administered (e.g., COMPA, BSI, DSI-R, and BFAS). The results showed higher Facebook use and a higher risk of addiction in individuals with the following characteristics: (1) female gender; (2) aged between 24 and 30 years; (3)  lower differentiation of self; (4) physically or emotionally distanced from significant others (emotional cut-off); and (5) negative communication patterns with their parents. An association was also found between other psychopathological indicators (e.g., depression, anxiety, and interpersonal sensitivity) and Facebook use. Thus, the present study contributes to the field of research on online addictions and has implications for prevention and clinical intervention.

Background: In recent years, Facebook has increasingly become an essential part of the lives of people, particularly youths, thus many research efforts have been focused on investigating the potential connection between social networking and mental health issues. This study aimed to examine the relationship between Facebook use, emotional state of depression, and family satisfaction. Methods: This study used the online survey created in Google Docs on the Facebook ‘wall’, as research method. The survey was available during Jun-Jul 2015 in Romania. In our cross-sectional study on a sample of 708 young Facebook users (aged 13-35), we divided the sample into 3 groups: ordinary, middle, and intense Facebook users. Materials and instruments: the survey comprised a series of basic demographic as well as some measures of Facebook addiction, depression, and family satisfaction. We used two methods connected with extensive Facebook usage, the first one measuring only the intensity of use, and the second one measuring not only the intensity but also the consequences of this use. Results: Facebook engagement is negatively related to family satisfaction. Moreover, Facebook engagement is positively related to depression symptoms. The Pearson correlations showed that higher Facebook intensity is positively associated with Facebook addiction. Conclusion: The study confirm previously published findings of other authors in the fields of social networking psychology. The study examined the relationship between Facebook use, depression, and life satisfaction and the hypotheses were supported.

Recent research suggests that the relationship between personality and Facebook use is mediated by the need for belonging and self-presentation. It is uncertain, however, whether these relationships also hold for other social networking sites (SNSs), for example, Instagram. This image-sharing platform provides a unique opportunity for fulfilling belonging and self-presentation needs. The online survey was completed by 404 participants (80% female, age range 18-63 years, Median = 21 years). As hypothesised, personality (extraversion and agreeableness) predicted belonging behaviours (liking, commenting, and tagging others), and extraversion and neuroticism predicted self-presentation behaviours (likelihood of posting on particular days, and at specific times of day) on Instagram. Stranger connections moderated the relationship between agreeableness and commenting behaviours. Findings highlight the need to explore SNSs beyond Facebook and consider the role of audience and personality on SNS behaviours.

The aim of this study was to investigate whether problematic social networking site (SNS) use (i.e., degree of dependent relationship with SNSs), total SNS time/day, total SNS friends, and specific SNS activities were related to body image (BI), self-esteem (SE), and eating disorder (ED) symptoms/concerns. A sample of young adults ( N = 147) completed an online survey which measured SNS usage, problematic SNS use, BI, SE, and ED symptom/concerns. The findings revealed that females and males spent 4.1 ± 3.9 and 2.9 ± 2.8 hr on SNS, respectively, with the majority of time spent lurking (i.e., looking at another users’ profile but not actually communicating with them). Furthermore, problematic SNS use was found to be related to BI, SE, and ED symptoms/concerns. Moreover, SNS activities, such as lurking and posting comments on others’ profiles, were found to be related to BI, whereas SNS total time was found to be related to ED symptoms/concerns. Overall, this study demonstrates the possible correlational influence of SNSs on BI, SE, and ED symptoms/concerns.

Social Networking Sites are a type of virtual community which enables many people to interact and share ideas or interests. Social networking is rapidly changing the way the world is doing virtually everything, from the way people access information to the way people communicate and most importantly, the way they interact. This study investigated the relationship between Social Networking Sites and Observational Learning of Senior Secondary School students in Mbaitoli Local Government Area, Imo State, Nigeria. Four research questions with the corresponding hypotheses were generated. The objectives of the study centered on investigating the relationship between four social networking sites namely: Facebook, Instagram, Twitter and YouTube to observational learning. The correlational study design was adopted for the study. Simple random sampling was used to draw a sample of 560 students from the population of the study. The selfdesigned instrument was of two parts: A and B. Pearson Product Moment Correlation was used to answer the research questions while the hypotheses were subjected to critical probability level of 0.05 alpha levels. Findings to this study revealed that there is a significant positive relationship between social networking sites and observational learning; some of which include enhancement of informative endowment as in the case of Facebook, live-video functionality to stories in the case of Instagram and acquisition of vocational skills from YouTube. The paper at the end recommended that more encouragement should be given to students to enable them benefit adequately and positively from the gains of social networking channels vis-a-vis observational learning.

As humans, we need to connect with one another, our friends and families, our culture and country. Present age is the era of information and technology and social media. College and University students spend significant amount of time on Social Networking Sites like Facebook etc. The present study was conducted to explore role of number of friends on Facebook on the relationship between individual’s need for belongingness and Facebook addiction. A sample of 180 university students was selected as sample through the non-probability sampling technique. Findings suggested that male Facebook users had significantly higher number of friends on Facebook than female Facebook users. Findings also explored significant positive correlation among need for belongingness, number friends on Facebook, and Facebook addiction. The relationship between need for belongingness and Facebook addiction was partially mediated by number of friends on Facebook. The study findings would be helpful to mental health practitioners to effectively deal with emerging problem of Facebook addiction.

More recently social networking sites (SNSs) users are extensively using the emerging geotagging technology for tourism motivation. The study aims to examine the relationship between determinants of geotagging technology and intention to adopt geotag technology as well as the extent to which technology readiness moderates the link between determinants of geotagging technology and intention to adopt geotag technology. Data were collected from a sample of 356 university students by using convenience sampling technique. Partial least square structural equation modelling has been used to measure the results. The empirical outcome uncovers that social influence, performance expectancy and facilitating condition are the factor that have direct impact on SNSs user’s willingness to adopt geotag for smart tourism experience. The present paper enriches UTAUT model by understanding the association between two variables namely effort expectancy and performance expectancy as well as the moderating role of the technology readiness. The findings of the study will assist to SNSs service providers by understanding the moderating role of technology readiness in the relationship between determinants of geotagging technology and intention to adopt geotag technology.

Children and adolescents have become active users of electronic technologies, with many of them blogging, watching videos, and chatting via instant messenger and social networking sites. Many of these activities have become a typical part of their lives. Electronic technologies have brought many conveniences to the lives of children and adolescents. Along with the opportunities associated with these technologies, children and adolescents are also susceptible to risks, including cyberbullying. Therefore, many researchers have become concerned with identifying which factors might predict children's and adolescents' involvement in these behaviors. Some predictors that researchers have focused on include age, gender, and ethnicity, but the findings were mixed. This chapter draws on research to review studies on the relationship of age, gender, and ethnicity to children's and adolescents' cyberbullying involvement and concludes with solutions and recommendations as well as future directions for research focused on these predictors and cyberbullying.
