Analytical and Calibration Models for Slot Antennas

In this chapter, the background, analytical formulations, and calibration routines for slot antennas are briefly reviewed. Performance and operating frequency of the slot antenna are strongly dependent on the dimension and shape of the slot or slotted array on the antenna. Nowadays, most antennas are designed using numerical simulation software for accuracy in analysis. However, analytical formulations still play an important role in the pre-design of the antenna due to the numerical simulation which still requires relatively long period of computation time compared to the analytical calculation. The predicted dimension of the antenna from analytical calculations will only require minor adjustment to optimize its performance in numerical simulation. Hence, the time spent for the antenna design can be shortened. Besides the performance of antenna, the antenna calibration process is crucial as well for releasing systematic errors in the antenna measurements. Some one-port calibration methods are described in detail.

For plastic processing extruders with grooved feed sections, the design of the feed section by means of analytical calculation models can be useful to reduce experimental costs. However, these models include assumptions and simplifications that can significantly decrease the prediction accuracy of the throughput due to complex flow behavior. In this paper, the accuracy of analytical modeling for calculating the throughput in a grooved barrel extruder is verified based on a statistical design of experiments. A special focus is placed on the assumptions made in the analytics of a backpressure-independent throughput, the assumption of a block flow and the differentiation of the solids conveying into different conveying cases. Simulative throughput tests with numerical simulation software using the discrete element method, as well as experimental throughput tests, serve as a benchmark. Overall, the analytical modeling already shows a very good calculation accuracy. Nevertheless, there are some outliers that lead to larger deviations in the throughput. The model predominantly overestimates the throughputs, whereby the origin of these deviations is often in the conveying angle calculation. Therefore, a regression-based correction factor for calculating the conveying angle is developed and implemented.

Building energy performance modeling is essential for energy planning, management, and efficiency. This paper presents a space heating model suitable for auto-generating baseline models of existing multifamily buildings. Required data and parameter input are kept within such a level of detail that baseline models can be auto-generated from, and calibrated by, publicly accessible data sources. The proposed modeling framework consists of a thermal network, a typical hydronic radiator heating system, a simulation procedure, and data handling procedures. The thermal network is a lumped and simplified version of the ISO 52016-1:2017 standard. The data handling consists of procedures to acquire and make use of satellite-based solar radiation data, meteorological reanalysis data (air temperature, ground temperature, wind, albedo, and thermal radiation), and pre-processing procedures of boundary conditions to account for impact from shading objects, window blinds, wind- and stack-driven air leakage, and variable exterior surface heat transfer coefficients. The proposed model was compared with simulations conducted with the detailed building energy simulation software IDA ICE. The results show that the proposed model is able to accurately reproduce hourly energy use for space heating, indoor temperature, and operative temperature patterns obtained from the IDA ICE simulations. Thus, the proposed model can be expected to be able to model space heating, provided by hydronic heating systems, of existing buildings to a similar degree of confidence as established simulation software. Compared to IDA ICE, the developed model required one-thousandth of computation time for a full-year simulation of building model consisting of a single thermal zone. The fast computation time enables the use of the developed model for computation time sensitive applications, such as Monte-Carlo-based calibration methods.

A theoretical and numerical study is carried out to investigate the transformation of the wave boundary layer from non-depth-limited (wave-like boundary layer) to depth-limited one (current-like boundary layer) over a smooth bottom. A long period of wave motion is not sufficient to induce depth-limited properties, although it has simply been assumed in various situations under long waves, such as tsunami and tidal currents. Four criteria are obtained theoretically for recognizing the inception of the depth-limited condition under waves. To validate the theoretical criteria, numerical simulation results using a turbulence model as well as laboratory experiment data are employed. In addition, typical field situations induced by tidal motion and tsunami are discussed to show the usefulness of the proposed criteria.

At present, pulley produced in China has been able to meet the demand of domestic and international markets. But there are many problem of the pulley industry in our country, such as too many production enterprises and the low level of export products. And as components of drive system are light weight and raw material price of pulley casting are rising, manufacturing requirements of the pulley are also more and more high. Aiming at the casting defects of pulley that enterprise current product, pulley casting blank model of common material HT250 be made by three-dimension software, numerical simulation of filling and solidification process for pulley sand casting by the casting simulation software Procast, the size and location of the various casting defects were forecasted and analyzed, reflecting the pulley filling and solidification process of the actual situation, due to the thicker pulley rim and less heat dissipation, position of shrinkage is close to the middle of rim [, a method of eliminating defects is proposed to realize sequential solidification, and thus to minimize porosity shrinkage and improve casting performance and reduce casting time and reduce production costs.

Important goals in the fire safety design, such as preventing loss of life and goods damage, are achieved by maintaining the stability of structures exposed to fire for a period of time established by norms and standards. Real fire scenarios confirm that the specific technical regulations which actually have a prescriptive character (both national and international) do not deal with sufficient possibilities regarding the assessment of structural fire safety. The new approach on structural safety, based on engineering notions, gives us additional prospects on it and it is included in the issues of the fire safety design of structures. A relatively new field of study, known by a few professionals focused on fire safety (but well acknowledged in the research area), fire safety design met with lots of changes and restructuring of the governing concepts and procedures and of the information with which they operate, due to the fast accumulation of experience in this area of engineering activity. Consequently, after countries such as Australia, Canada, New Zeeland or USA provided towards professionals specific technical regulations for fire safety design, groups of experts in these aforementioned countries have joined their forces to try to diminish the differences that exists between those regulations and to give a unitary character to them, a better conceptualized engineering approach of the fire safety design. The result: occurrence of the publication International Fire Engineering Guidelines (last edition from 2005). The systematic approach of fire safety design in constructions pointed, once again, the possibility of modular organization of this field of study, the relations between modules being established according to the objective or objectives in the fire safety design for a specified building. This article aims to put forward, from this modularized perspective, the study of the fire safety design of a building exposed to fire; hence, the practical part of the article exhibits the numerical simulation of initialization and development of the fire process for a large scale religious building. The main features of the building represent the amount of space that facilitates the spreading of smoke and warm gases and which increases the risk of damaging the structural reinforced concrete elements. Application calls to specific numerical simulation with a higher degree of credibility, such as those realized by the FDS (Fire Dynamics Simulation) software.

The paper deals with optimization of forming process for AISI 430 stainless steel with nominal thickness 0.4 mm. During forming of sidewall for washing machine drum, some wrinkles remain at the end of forming process in some places. This problem was solved by optimization the geometry of the drawpiece using numerical simulation. During optimization a series of modifications of the part geometry to absolute elimination of wrinkling was performed. On the basis of mechanical tests, the material model was created and imported into the material database of Autoform simulation software.

Commonly used commercial simulation software SYSNOISE and ANSYS is run on a single machine (can not directly run on parallel machine) when use the finite element and boundary element to simulate muffler effect, and it will take more than ten days, sometimes even twenty days to work out an exact solution as the large amount of numerical simulation. Use a high performance parallel machine which was built by 32 commercial computers and transform the finite element and boundary element simulation software into a program that can running under the MPI (message passing interface) parallel environment in order to reduce the cost of numerical simulation. The relevant data worked out from the simulation experiment demonstrate that the result effect of the numerical simulation is well. And the computing speed of the high performance parallel machine is 25 ~ 30 times a microcomputer.

Recently, new sheet metal forming technique, incremental forming has been introduced. It is based on using a single spherical tool, which is moved along CNC controlled tool path. During the incremental forming process, the sheet blank is fixed in sheet holder. The tool follows a certain tool path and progressively deforms the sheet. Nowadays, numerical simulations of metal forming are widely used by industry to predict the geometry of the part, stresses and strain during the forming process. Because incremental forming is a dieless process, it is perfectly suited for prototyping and small volume production [1, 2]. On the other hand, this process is very slow and therefore it can only be used when a slow series production is required. As the sheet incremental forming process is an emerging process which has a high industrial interest, scientific efforts are required in order to optimize the process and to increase the knowledge of this process through experimental studies and the development of accurate simulation models. In this paper, a comparison between numerical simulation and experimental results is realized in order to assess the suitability of the numerical model. The experimental investigation is realized using a three-axis CNC milling machine. The forming tool consists in a cylindrical rotating punch with a hemispherical head. A subroutine has been developed to describe the tool path from CAM procedure. A numerical model has been developed to simulate the sheet incremental forming process. The finite element code Abaqus explicit has been used. The simulation of the incremental forming process stays a complex task and the computation time is often prohibitive for many reasons. During this simulation, the blank is deformed by a sequence of small increments that requires many numerical increments to be performed. Moreover, the size of the tool diameter is generally very small compared to the size of the metal sheet and thus the contact zone between the tool and the sheet is limited. As the tool deforms almost every part of the sheet, small elements are required everywhere in the sheet resulting in a very high computation time. In this paper, an adaptive remeshing method has been used to simulate the incremental forming process. This strategy, based on adaptive refinement and coarsening procedures avoids having an initially fine mesh, resulting in an enormous computing time. Experiments have been carried out using aluminum alloy sheets. The final geometrical shape and the thickness profile have been measured and compared with the numerical results.
