Adaptive Transmission of Multimedia Data over UMTS

As communications technology is being developed, users’ demand for multimedia services raises. Meanwhile, the Internet has enjoyed tremendous growth in recent years. Consequently, there is a great interest in using the IP-based networks to provide multimedia services. One of the most important areas in which the issues are being debated is the development of standards for the universal mobile telecommunications system (UMTS). UMTS constitutes the third generation of cellular wireless networks which aims to provide high-speed data access along with real-time voice calls. Wireless data is one of the major boosters of wireless communications and one of the main motivations of the next-generation standards. Bandwidth is a valuable and limited resource for UMTS and every wireless network in general. Therefore, it is of extreme importance to exploit this resource in the most efficient way. Consequently, when a user experiences a streaming video, there should be enough bandwidth available at any time for any other application that the mobile user might need. In addition, when two different applications run together, the network should guarantee that there is no possibility for any of the above-mentioned applications to prevail against the other by taking all the available channel bandwidth. Since Internet applications adopt mainly TCP as the transport protocol, while streaming applications mainly use RTP, the network should guarantee that RTP does not prevail against the TCP traffic. This means that there should be enough bandwidth available in the wireless channel for the Internet applications to run properly.

The objective of this chapter is to introduce the reader to a general architectural framework for a broad array of retrievals of multimedia data required by various applications. This framework contains more than the traditional client/server architecture and even more than the existing three-tier architectures. This chapter introduces the reader to many critical issues involved in multimedia retrieval over the Internet. A new architectural framework is proposed to cover a variety of multimedia applications over the Internet and the World Wide Web. This framework has the three main objectives of (1) proposing a layered architecture to facilitated design and separate different issues, (2) covering a large number of multimedia applications, and finally, (3) making use of existing and well-established technology, such as Mobile Agents, SQL databases, and cache managements schemes. The proposed architectural framework separates issues involved in multimedia retrieval into five layers, namely: keyword searching and data servers, proxy servers, domain and department archives, mobile user agents, and the users. Through these five layers, various customized solutions to a large array of problems will be proposed and applied. The chapter offers, but is not limited to, solutions for different problems that arise in retrieval of multimedia data. A list of important open problems is identified at the end of the chapter.

AbstractRadio over Fibre (RoF) transport of high-speed wireless data provides a comprehensive solution for the forthcoming highly-reliable and spectral-efficient wireless systems. MIMO is one of the most widely used wireless technologies to increase the system reliability and capacity without any increased demand of power/bandwidth. However, the inherent non-linearities of RoF link and the multipath fading of the wireless channel can degrade the overall performance of the wireless system. In this work, authors demonstrate RoF transport of adaptively modulated MIMO signals and report the improvement in spectral efficiency under the impact of RoF link non-linearity. The transmitter of the proposed RoF based wireless system selects the appropriate modulation scheme with the assumption of perfect channel state information to achieve the acceptable BER at the subscriber end. The spectral efficiency improvement by this self-recovering MIMO-RoF system is evaluated by incorporating orthogonal Space-Time Block Code with 2 × 2 antenna configuration over the frequency-selective Rayleigh fading channel.

Web 2.0 has been a dominant concept in recent discussion and development of Internet applications, businesses and uses. Dating from 2004, the term Web 2.0 is variously understood as new forms of website development and delivery technology, changing uses of the Internet to emphasise sociability over consumption, new understandings of the possible financial exploitation of the web, and more broadly, a new way of thinking about the Internet as a whole. However, Web 2.0 is, conceptually, both more and less than these various understandings and we can only grasp why it has become such a key term in contemporary usage by appreciating two key discursive foundations for this term. Firstly, much Web 2.0 thinking is a re-expression of long-held ideas about the Internet and the web. Secondly, at the particular time when Web 2.0 was made popular, net technology policy makers and financial analysts were primarily enthused by the possibilities of broadband networks for improved and more profitable versions of the well-established businesses of telephony and audio-visual entertainment, and had to some extent consigned novel, web-based services to a lesser role, following the dot.com crash. Thus, as I argue in this paper, Web 2.0 can be understood as a key intervention, from within the dot.com / new media business sector, recovering from the crash, that re-asserts the equal legitimacy of the use of networked computing, over high-speed lines, for computing-oriented activities, and not just video on demand and voice over IP. In short, in the first years of this century, discussions about the future of the Internet had become dominated by arguments for increased broadband access, substantially concerned with providing more traditional video and voice services in new ways. The World Wide Web was seen as relatively unimportant for this purpose, even though it was part of the so-called 'triple play' of voice and data services. At this time, first in the hands of Tim O'Reilly and then from others who took up his position, Web 2.0 became a catchy simple term under which to mount a campaign for the renaissance of the World Wide Web as a quite distinct, yet equally important, form of media and communications. So, Web 2.0 provides evidence that, while there is a convergence of all forms of media and communications towards similar data traffic over the Internet, there remain diverging views over the nature, control and use of the Internet, views that express the degree to which corporate players imagine themselves to be 'media', 'telephony' or 'computing' in primary orientation.

Channel utilization in today's environment for handling multimedia data plays an important role. The steps of allotting resources to process can be done by taking data which helps to analyze and make important decisions at runtime. This research paper focuses on allocation of optical wireless channels using wavelength division multiplexing where two models were developed, first was channel data pre-processing as per transmission packet size while second was TLBO (Teacher Learning Based Optimization) genetic algorithm which find the correct channel with position for the input data to communicate. Here some information used for analysis was total number of channels, data size, available wavelength, etc. So, output of the TLBO process sequence was used for passing data in selected channels. Results show that proposed model OWDS (optical wireless data scheduling) has overcome various evaluation parameters on different scales as compared to previous approaches adopted by researchers.

Indosat ready to seize opportunities for sustainable growth of business spectrum are still sprawling Indonesia.    Therefore, Indosat continues to focus on the development of increased efforts to provide the best service for customers of Indosat. Indosat will continue to develop and expand network coverage and a larger investment that the company will achieve excellence in the field of integrated telecommunications services.    Ranking by region of the IP Providers can be seen by grouping IP Providers, and management over IP Providers prefer to choose providers based on where it orginates as an example for the region of the U.S if it will be preferred providers that come from U.S. providers.With the commencement of the internet network optimization start early in 2008 with the selection of the appropriate IP Upstream Provider criteria, it is up to date according to data obtained from Indosat, seen any significant changes to the cost of purchasing capacity of the IP Upstream.    Based on the data obtained that until Q3 or September 2008, the number of IP Upstream Providers that previously there were 20 to 10 IP Upstream Provider, IP Transit Price total decrease of 11% to the price of IP Transit Price / Mbps there is a decrease of 78%, while from the capacity bandwith an increase of 301% capacity from 2008.

Abstract Background Effective education about endoscopic surgery (ES) is greatly needed for unskilled surgeons, especially at low-volume institutions, to maintain the safety of patients. We have tried to establish the remote educational system using videoconference system through the internet for education about ES to surgeons belonging to affiliate institutions. The aim of this manuscript was to report the potential to establish a comfortable remote educational system and to debate its advantages. Methods We established a local remote educational conference system by combining the use of a general web conferencing system and a synchronized remote video playback system with annotation function through a high-speed internet. Results During 2014–2019, we conducted 14 videoconferences to review and improve surgeons’ skills in performing ES at affiliated institutions. At these conferences, while an uncut video of ES that had been performed at one of the affiliated institutions was shown, the surgical procedure was discussed frankly, and expert surgeons advised improvements. The annotation system is useful for easy, prompt recognition among the audience regarding anatomical structures and procedures that are difficult to explain verbally. Conclusions This system is of low initial cost and offers easy participation and high-quality videos. It would therefore be a useful tool for regional ES education.

Summary Objectives: Internet technologies provide an attractive infrastructure for efficient and low cost communications in regional health information networks. The advantages provided by the Internet come however with a significantly greater element of risk to the confidentiality and integrity of information. This is because the Internet has been designed primarily to optimize information sharing and interoperability, not security. The main objective of this paper is to propose the exploitation of public-key cryptography techniques to provide adequate security to enable secure healthcare Internet applications. Methods: Public-key cryptography techniques can provide the needed security infrastructure in regional health networks. In the regional health-care security framework presented in this paper, we propose the use of state-of-art Public Key Infrastructure (PKI) technology. Such an e-Health PKI consists of regional certification authorities that are implemented within the central hospitals of each region and provide their services to the rest of the healthcare establishments of the same region. Results: Significant experience in this area has been gained from the implementation of the PKI@AUTH project. Conclusions: The developed PKI infrastructure already successfully provides its security services to the AHEPA university hospital. The same infrastructure is designed to easily support a number of hospitals participating in a regional health information network.

In order to meet requirements of increasingly high-speed, large and intelligent mechanical equipments on fault diagnosis, the Internet-based reconfigurable mechanical system fault diagnosis program was presented. The overall structure and networking schema of distance mechanical fault diagnosis system were analyzed, and the distance fault diagnosis network model based on J2EE framework was also described. The structural model and reconfigurable manner of the reconfigurable distance diagnosis system was provided, which used CORBA component technology to achieve reconfiguration. The detail steps of system that take some type of diesel engine as diagnosis object was described, and the intelligent diagnosing methods were also researched. The Internet-based fault diagnosis technology effectively improves the efficiency and accuracy of diagnostic systems.

The rapid development of high-speed railway (HSR) and train-ground communications with high reliability, safety, and capacity promotes the evolution of railway dedicated mobile communication systems from Global System for Mobile Communications-Railway (GSM-R) to Long Term Evolution-Railway (LTE-R). The main challenges for LTE-R network planning are the rapidly time-varying channel and high mobility, because HSR lines consist of a variety of complex terrains, especially the composite scenarios where tunnels, cuttings, and viaducts are connected together within a short distance. Existing researches mainly focus on the path loss and delay spread for the individual HSR scenarios. In this paper, the broadband measurements are performed using a channel sounder at 950 MHz and 2150 MHz in a typical HSR composite scenario. Based on the measurements, the pivotal characteristics are analyzed for path loss exponent, power delay profile, and tap delay line model. Then, the deterministic channel model in which the 3D ray-tracing algorithm is applied in the composite scenario is presented and validated by the measurement data. Based on the ray-tracing simulations, statistical analysis of channel characteristics in delay and Doppler domain is carried out for the HSR composite scenario. The research results can be useful for radio interface design and optimization of LTE-R system.
