The European Credit Transfer System establishes a calculation based on the work students do, rather than direct teaching hours as is the case with the current credit system. These are known as ECTS credits and they represent the amount of work the student needs to do to pass a subject. In short, ECTS credits are the quantity of work needed to learn a subject, including theory, practical classes, seminars, exams as well as anything the student has done individually which can be evaluated. This is where a Wiki would provide a new space for students, where they could and should introduce information on matters related to the subject, as well as edit, correct, expand and improve etc. the already existing information. This information, which would be a collection of web pages in hypertext, would make it possible to create a computer application based on the collaborative work of the students which can be accessed by any student from any Internet connection. At the same time, it can be assessed and therefore form part of the student’s final grade for the subject. The aim of this chapter is to show the methodology which will enable a Wiki to be used for professional learning. Therefore, first the authors define what a Wiki is; second they discuss the Wiki as a collaborative teaching instrument; and third they deal with Wikis as a tool for educational assessment.

Covid-19 is an unprecedented crisis that has affected almost all industry players including education. It has transformed our way of life and introduced a new normal to how things are done. As an effort to contain the outbreak of pandemic Covid-19, universities have shifted to online learning. In line with this, Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM) has decided to execute open and distance learning (ODL) for the current semester until 31 December 2020. ODL introduces a different learning environment as compared to the traditional classroom that requires students to be self-reliant in learning new things. Hence, the purpose of the study is to explore students’ experiences in the process of knowledge transfer through ODL specifically for accounting subjects. A questionnaire was distributed to students who were taking the subject of Introduction to Financial Accounting and Introduction to Cost Accounting in UiTM Pahang Kampus Raub and a total of 206 responses were received. The study found over half of the students enjoy learning through ODL but only one-third were looking forward to having ODL for the next semester. Poor internet connection is the main reason found in the study that makes ODL not preferred by the students. At the same time, few features were highlighted by the students about ODL such as the advantage of pre-recorded video to catch up the new material and flexibility for them to learn at their own pace.

The paper presents the results of one part of empirical research conducted for the purpose of conceiving the proposal of educational standards for the subject Geography at the end of primary school education. The goal was to determine the extent to which the students were trained to orient themselves and use cartographic method in the process of using geographical map. Research comprised the representative sample of 919 students of the final grade in 159 Serbian primary schools. Achievement Test served for studying the levels of students' knowledge and skills in the field of Geographic Skills. Besides this, the questionnaire studied students' opinion on learning outcomes in this field, and by analyzing contingency tables, the correlation between students' success in geography at the end of the first term of the eighth grade and their opinion about learning outcomes in the afore-mentioned field was determined. The findings of this research indicate that students are not sufficiently trained to orient themselves in space and on geographical map, as well as to use geographical map in instruction. Besides, it was established that there is a correlation between students' success and their opinion on learning outcomes in the field of Geographic Skills.

Studien avses att återupprepas under kommande år.Nyckelord: Samhällskunskap, nationella prov, interbedömarreliabilitet, intraclass correlationThe first national test in samhällskunskap – a study of interrater reliabilityAbstractThe Swedish school subject Samhällskunskap (Societal knowledge) exists basically only in the Nordic countries. In other countries a number of different subjects, such as geography and civics, share the content. The content of the subject is constantly changing, depending on how society is changing. The first national tests in Samhällskunskap for all Swedish ninth graders took place in 2013. A large part of the test contains constructed responses.  Given the characteristics of the subject we consider it especially important to investigate whether these tests are “fair” or not. The intent of this study is to investigate one aspect of “fairness”, interrater reliability, meaning the degree to which the same student responses are scored equally by different raters.  In 2009, the National Agency of Education in Sweden conducted a large study of the subjects Swedish, English and Mathematics. Our study aims to mimic and further develop the design of the study from 2009. Our study was carried out on the first national tests in 2013. The results were analyzed by exploring different reliability measures within the categories consensus estimates, and consistency estimates. As the 2013 tests were the first tests of its kind in Sweden the purpose was also to create a framework for regular studies of interrater reliability. The rater design with a relatively large number of teachers from all over the country, each assessing a total of three complete student test responses aimed at mimicking the way the tests are assessed in schools. This also allowed us to study the stability of our assessment rubrics. The study itself was extensive and took two days to perform. The results indicate a large compliance when it comes to the final grade of the test. The study is meant to be repeated in the coming years. Keywords: Social science, civics, national testing, interrater reliability, intraclass correlation

Promoting the values of peace and tolerance within an international climate of turbulence and instability is an essential responsibility for governments and schools. Threats to tolerance include the circumstances of societal challenges, instabilities in the region, and the increasing risks of social media. Ways to nurture and instill tolerance through the subject of Islamic education in UAE high schools is a key concern. Through a case study of the written, taught, and learnt curriculum of UAE Islamic education, this paper investigates the teaching and learning of tolerance in UAE high schools. It provides recommendations on how Islamic education classes, built on an awareness of the Islamic value of tolerance as a foundational component, can be utilized for shaping educational experiences that promote open mindedness. Curriculum-aligned Islamic education resources need to be further developed and teacher professional learning programs should be launched to empower teachers to achieve this intended aim.

Educator Lauren Porosoff discovered the value of contextual behavioral science by accident, when accompanying her psychologist husband at a professional conference. Additional study of the subject convinced her of its benefits to educators and students — and showed her the value of study outside her field. She encourages educators to seek out professional learning opportunities in fields other than education and suggests how educators can make the most of such learning.

Bilingual web pages are widely used to mine translations of unknown terms. This study focused on an effective solution for obtaining relevant web pages, extracting translations with correct lexical boundaries, and ranking the translation candidates. This research adopted co-occurrence information to obtain the subject terms and then expanded the source query with the translation of the subject terms to collect effective bilingual search engine snippets. Afterwards, valid candidates were extracted from small-sized, noisy bilingual corpora using an improved frequency change measurement that combines adjacent information. This research developed a method that considers surface patterns, frequency–distance, and phonetic features to elect an appropriate translation. The experimental results revealed that the proposed method performed remarkably well for mining translations of unknown terms.

In this research, we studied localized commercial texts of globalized companies in the context of intertextuality on three levels: lexical, thematic, and cultural. Amongst many products of the three companies under study (Samsung, LG, and Sony), four smartphone models of each were selected (total: 12). Their introductory web pages both in Persian and English were the sources of the data. Furthermore, we used an online analyzer tool (online-utility.org/text/analyzer.jsp) so as to analyze the data; the results were also corroborated with other pieces of software packages and applications. In the scene of booming globalization, a better understanding of cross-cultural vocative communication proves to be helpful. One of the most active areas is to study flagship brands where rivals are trying their best at localizing their devices to the liking of potential customers. Descriptive and explanatory methods were brought into play in order to compare English and Persian commercial texts. The research revealed the critical role intertextuality plays in the process of glocalization. Developing companies should note that they, too, could utilize this great potentiality in the context of web localization. Therefore, the findings would be of benefit to Chief Executive Officers (CEOs), product developers and scholars interested in the subject.
