Managers often conceive knowledge management processes in ways that unduly limit its potential. Toyota has avoided falling into this narrow paradigm trap by creating its own version of knowledge management that is well suited to its culture. They have woven their knowledge management strategy together with process improvement and innovation methods. Toyota’s knowledge management system is a theoretically sound, yet practical, business approach built on a set of scientific principles based on a philosophy known as Pragmatism. This chapter examines how Pragmatic principles used by Toyota can achieve superior innovation results. The chapter concludes by explaining why the Pragmatic approach delivers superior performance at lower cost than conventional knowledge management methods.

Many classifications and taxonomies of knowledge management tools highlight mainly specific characteristics and features of a single tool, by ignoring the holistic and systematic dimension of the classification, and the explicit elements of linking with the knowledge management strategy. This chapter aims at proposing a general framework that integrates the technological side of knowledge management with the strategic one. Thus, this framework could represent a powerful instrument to guide knowledge engineers in the implementation phase of a knowledge management system, coherently with strategical choices for knowledge management. Chapter is articulated in two main parts: the first one is focused on reminding some relevant approaches to knowledge management (Hoffmann 2001; Skyrme 2000; Ruggles 1997; Radding 1998; Maier 2002); the second part presents the framework, with a detailed description of its components.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to recommend a framework for remodelling a public sector knowledge management system (KMS) using key knowledge management (KM) processes. The rationale is to provide insight and guidelines to organisations that struggle with KM. Design/methodology/approach This desktop study adopted the qualitative approach and literature to support the understanding regarding the remodelling of the public sector KMS using key KM processes. Findings The study found that if KM processes are not considered, the prospect of KM is limited. The best way to manage public sector knowledge is following KM processes using information technology. Without proper KM, organisations may not know how knowledge is generated, codified, stored, shared and used in an organisation. Originality/value The paper provides a framework to guide public sector organisations in the implementation of electronic KM. Thus, proposing a new way of managing knowledge by using the electronic KM processes in the public sector organisations. The study will also benefit other organisations implementing KM programmes.

This paper contributes to the field of knowledge management arguing that knowledge management research should be grounded in both systems thinking and sociotechnical thinking. Systems thinking enables the treating of knowledge management broadly, as a complex system, not limited to knowledge management processes, but encompassing other essential elements related to managing knowledge at an organization. Sociotechnical thinking considers both social elements and technology equally important in managing knowledge. The two above mentioned approaches are used to support the idea that, in order to successfully manage knowledge, a balanced sociotechnical knowledge management system should be designed at an organization. The article seeks to investigate the main elements of such a system and to show how these elements relate to each other demonstrating that a strong correlation exists between the knowledge management process and strategic leadership.

With digital transformation and progress in science, developing process capabilities with limited resources has gained immense importance for higher education institutions. To provide the highest quality education services and manage the information and knowledge management processes, appropriate strategies, and related key performance management factors must be defined efficiently. In the literature, numerous models and tools have been proposed to measure knowledge management capabilities (Mohapatra et al., 2016; Imran et al., 2017; Dayan et al., 2017; Trivella et al., 2015). This chapter aims to develop a better understanding of the relationship between knowledge management processes and propose an assessment model of knowledge management system for higher education institutions to measure knowledge resources and their capabilities. To do so, the knowledge management system is identified by four main attributes (People, Processes, Technology and Culture) and each attribute is comprehensively analysed in a dedicated section.

Nowadays, Knowledge Management System (KMS) can be used in higher education as a strategy framework reflecting the comprehensive and integrated understanding with long-term paradigm to attain institution mission. KMS practices require long processes, management processes, human resources, information technology and communication which holistically constitute the valuable assets in sharing information, knowledge, and experience to achieve the effective knowledge management. One strategy to KMS involves continuously implementing sharing information, knowledge, and experience supported by information system as the holistic effort for organization development. This study aims to explore the challenges faced by the transformation of a higher education institution process from polytechnic into an institute of technology, particularly in the working area of the academic and student administration bureau. The main focus of those challenges is of KMS perspectives to become part of the organization’s culture. The exploration elaborates the concepts of KMS and compares them to the organization conditions.

Although ontologies have been used in a considerable number of knowledge management projects, in most of them their application has been limited to the definition of a common organizational language. This chapter offers an alternative view on the use of ontologies, supporting all of the knowledge management processes, including generation, acquisition, transference, and integration of knowledge. The focus of this chapter is on presenting how ontologies can be included in knowledge management systems to promote availability of knowledge, knowledge evolution, automatic and semi-automatic knowledge extraction, and integration of heterogeneous sources of information. Each one of these characteristics is supported by ontology technologies including the processes required to engineer and manage an ontology, such as: querying, mapping, and evolution. Finally, the architecture of a proposed knowledge management system that uses ontologies to improve its processes is presented.
