Digital games are considered an effective and efficient instructional strategy for computing education. However, there are few empirical studies providing sound evidence on the benefits of such educational games. In this respect, the objective of this chapter is to present a comprehensive analysis in order to summarize empirical evidence on the benefits of digital games used as an instructional strategy for computing education. The analysis is based on data collected from 21 case studies that use the MEEGA model, the most commonly used model for educational games' evaluation, evaluating 9 different games, involving a population of 344 students. The results indicate that digital games can yield a positive effect on the learning of computing, providing a pleasant and engaging experience to the students and motivating them to study. These results may guide instructors in the selection of educational games as instructional methods and guide game creators with respect to the development of new games.

The objective of this chapter is to explore the evolution and opportunities of the emerging field of digital games for programming learning, the challenges and tensions that they present, and how educators may be able to collectively advance this work to benefit student learning. This work summarizes previous empirical evidence concerning the positive impacts and outcomes of digital games in computing education, or even impacts that do not let games to spread. Hence, a systematic literature review is carried out in this context to provide a comprehensive overview of works carried out towards incorporating digital games in order to acquire CT skills or learn basic programming concepts within P12 education. The chapter discusses on the range of indicators and measures used in the 44 selected studies, together with methodological limitations and recommendations for further work in this area.

Nowadays, the use of digital games for educational purposes becomes increasingly popular. The immersive environment of a digital game causes pleasant feelings to players motivating them to participate more actively in the learning process. However, there is a variety of educational games in terms of graphics and mechanics, and each player prefers to play different game categories. For maximizing the learner’s engagement and educational results, the incorporation of the same educational content into multiple games’ categories is the solution. Nevertheless, the update of the educational content in all games increases complexity. In this paper, a mechanism that uses web services and achieves the portability of the same educational content in two completely different categories of mobile games (a point-and-click game and a virtual reality game) is presented. The gain of this innovative work is that the same educational content and mechanism can be accessible by any game’s category and platform taking advantage of the game’s characteristics, in order to motivate the student to participate in the learning process and increase her/his engagement in it. The evaluation of the presented system indicates that the integration of the same educational content to different games has a positive effect on educational results.

Empirical studies have shown the Weighted Application Blank (W.A.B.) to be an effective predictive device in the selection of employees. There are, however, studies which suggest that the predictive validity of the W.A.B. may be substantially overstated in the literature. Contrary to the principles of classic psychometric theory it is suggested that moderator variables are accountable for this paradox. This study demonstrates how biographical correlates of tenure function as moderators and empirical evidence of the moderating effects on the predictive validity of the W.A.B. are provided. It is suggested that a new approach to the development of the W.A.B. is necessary in order to utilise the effect of moderators. OpsommingEmpiriese studies toon dat die Geweegde Aansoekvorm (G.A.V.) 'n doeltreffende voorspellingsinstrument in personeelseleksie is. Daar is egter studies wat voorspel dat die voorspellingsgeldigheid van die G.A.V. in die literatuur aansienlik oorbeklemtoon word. Teenstrydig met die beginsels van klassieke psigometriese teorie word voorgestel dat moderator veranderlikes vir hierdie paradoks verantwoordelik is. Hierdie studie toon hoe die biografiese korrelate van dienstyd as moderators fungeer en empiriese bewys van die modererende effek op die voorspellingsgeldigheid van die G.A.V. word gelewer. Daar word voorgestel dat ‘n nuwe benadering tot die ontwikkeling van die G.A.V. noodsaaklik is ten einde die effek van moderators te benut.

This paper is devoted to the estimation of welfare costs of inflation, taking into account the peculiarities of the Russian economy. Theoretical approaches that are used in the literature to analyze the costs of inflation are discussed in the paper. It also provides an overview of the empirical studies of this topic. Research found in academic literature shows that the results of quantitative estimates are extremely sensitive to the choice of the functional form of the money demand equation, as well as to assumptions that are made to simplify the analysis, some of which do not fit Russian data. As a result, we have modified the standard approaches to estimating welfare costs of inflation, taking into account the monetization growth in Russia, and provide quantitative estimates of the magnitude of welfare costs of inflation. The results indicate a significant gain for economic agents in terms of real GDP with a decrease in inflation, which is regarded as a positive effect from the inflation targeting policy.

Microexpressions do exist, and they are regarded as valid cues to deception by many researchers, furthermore, there is a lot of empirical evidence which substantiates this claim. However, some researchers don’t think the microexpression can be a way to catch a liar. The author elucidates the theories predicting that looking for microexpressions can be a way to catch a liar, and notes that some data can support for the utilization of microexpressions as a good way to detect deception. In addition, the author thinks that the mixed results in the area of investigating microexpressions and deception detection may be moderated by the stake. More empirical studies which employ high-stake lies to explore the relationship between microexpressions and deception detection are needed.

The purpose of this study was to test and obtain empirical evidence about the direct and indirect effects of training and competence together to employees performance in PT. Cipta Krida Bahari. This study uses an explanatory approach Analysis and Descriptive Analysis, which aims to determine the effect of independent and dependent variables. Furthermore, the present invention will be described, by observation and research and describe the nature or the events ongoing at the time of the study and examine the causes of the symptoms. In this study examines the influence of variables of training, competence and motivation, simultaneously or partially on employee performance. The benefits of this research is that companies in improving the performance of employees through training programs, attention to improving the competence of employees, increase employee motivation, and in turn can help in improving the work (performance) of each individual employee. The results showed simultaneously and partially variable training and competency positive effect on employee motivation and improve employee performance

The chapter argues that empirical studies of first-language acquisition lend support to the Wittgensteinian-Merleau-Pontian conception of language as against the prevailing conception that underwrites the method of cases in either its armchair or experimental version. It offers a non-representationalist model, inspired by the work of Michael Tomasello, for the acquisition of “knowledge,” with the aim of showing that we could fully account for the acquisition of this and other philosophically troublesome words without positing independently existing “items” to which these words refer. The chapter also aims at bringing out and underscoring the striking fact that, whereas many in contemporary analytic philosophy regard and present themselves as open and attentive to empirical science, they have often relied on a conception of language that has been supported by no empirical evidence.

Corruption is a key factor that affects countries’ development, with emerging countries being a geographical area in which it tends to generate greater negative effects. However, few empirical studies analyze corruption from the point of view of disclosure by companies in this relevant geographical area. Based on a regression analysis using data from the 96 large companies from 15 emerging countries included in the 2016 International Transparency Report, this paper seeks to understand what determinants affect such disclosure. In that context, this paper provides empirical evidence to understand the factors that influence reporting on anti-corruption mechanisms in an area of high economic importance that has been little studied to date, pointing to the positive effect of press freedom in a country where the company is located and with the industry being the unique control variable that strengthens this relationship.
