Energy for heating and cooling is among the biggest costs in greenhouse crop production. This has led to a rethink on energy-saving strategies, including the demand for solar energy as a viable renewable and sustainable choice for greenhouse farming. This chapter presents the development of a solar-powered system leveraging on internet of things and GSM technologies for sensing, controlling, and maintaining optimal climatic parameters inside a greenhouse. The proposed system is designed to automatically measure and monitor changes in temperature, humidity, soil moisture, and the light intensity. The strategy utilized in the design framework provides the user with the information of the measured parameters online and via SMS regardless of their geographical location. The chapter also incorporates a mechanism to self-regulate the climatic condition inside the greenhouse, suitable for the plant growth. Such a system can help improve the quantity and quality of crops grown in a greenhouse. Tests carried out on the system prove its effectiveness according to the design considerations.

To get the better crop production in agriculture business the farmer needs regular status of crop. This can be achieved by using Internet of Things (IoT) which collects information about soil moisture, temperature, light intensity etc., from integration of wireless sensors. The IoT technology provides control actions by using micro controllers based on this information through smart phones or laptops when farmers get alerts in their phones. The collected data can be stored and viewed as results based on graphical charts. This work tries to digitalize farming and agricultural activities so farmer can face the challenges by accurately predicting the crop growth. This system will definitely accelerate the agriculture business by keep updating the current conditions of land with the help of IoT at anywhere in the world

The objective of our research was to examine the effect of canopy shading on beech sapling architecture in the oldgrowth silver fir-beech forests of Pecka and Rajhenavski Rog. In August 2003 we sampled one plot (352 m2) in a large gap in Pecka, which was a result of a strong windstorm in 1983, and eight small gaps (26–78 m2) with similar sapling heights (3.8–8 m). A ground view of each gap was drawn including the characteristics of gap border trees and the density of separate sapling layers was recorded. The height and diameter were measured for each sapling, as well as the following quality characteristics on selected dominant saplings: width of the crown, number of larger branches and knots (>1/3 DBH), intensity of stem bending, deviation from vertical growth, number of terminal shoots, and the type of damage. The results show a negative effect of high canopy shading (estimated relative light intensity was below 5%) on the architectural quality of saplings. A lower overall density of saplings, greater intensity of bending and deviation from vertical growth, a shorter stem length without branches, a larger number of saplings with two terminal shoots, and a larger number of damaged saplings were observed in small gaps.

The use and quality analysis of household compost have become very important issues in recent years due to the increasing interest in local food production and safe, self-produced food. The phenomenon was further exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic quarantine period, which gave new impetus to the growth of small home gardens. However, the knowledge associated with making high-quality compost is often lacking in home gardeners. Therefore, the objective of this research was to find answers to the following questions: can the quality of backyard compost be considered safe in terms of toxicity and nutrient content? Can weed seed dispersion affect the usability of backyard compost? In general, can the circulation of organic matter be increased with the spread of home composting? In this study, 16 different house composts were analysed for stability, weed seed contamination, toxic elements, and nutrient content using analysis of variance. The results of the research showed that the quality properties of the composts (including their weed seed dispersion effect) were greatly influenced by the different techniques and raw materials used. The toxicity levels, as well as the content of macro and microelements, were within the parameters of safe-quality compost. The specific macronutrient (Ca, Mg) and micronutrient (Fe, Mn) contents of the tested composts have a similar and, in some cases, more favorable nutrient supply capacity in crop production than the frequently-used cow manure-based composts. With a plan of basic education on composting, there is potential to encourage farmyard composting.

The study presents the effects of fertilisation on selected quality parameters of the dried material obtained from plants of lovage and coriander. During the crop production process, the plants were treated with two fertilisers containing substances potentially acting as elicitors. The dried material was obtained in course of a drying process carried out in optimum conditions and based on the CD-VMFD method which combines convective pre-drying (CD) at a low temperature (40 °C) with vacuum-microwave finish drying with the use of 240 W microwaves (VMFD). The quality of the dried material was evaluated through measurement of the total contents of polyphenols, total antioxidant potential (ABTS and DPPH method), and the profile of volatile compounds (headspace-solid phase microextractio-HS-SPME) as well as assessment of the colour. It was found that by applying first fertilisation (with organic components) it is possible to significantly increase the contents of both bioactive compounds and volatile substances responsible for the aroma. It was determined that the higher content of bioactive compounds was related to the composition of the first fertiliser, presumably the extract from common nettle. The study showed that the application of the first fertiliser contributed to enhanced quality parameters of the raw material obtained.
