The world is constantly changing, and the hotel industry is one of the sectors where we can feel it the most. Nowadays, the hotel market is dynamic, diverse, difficult, and dangerous, which creates new challenges for hotel managers, particularly in terms of revenue, creation, and optimization. In order to overcome that, revenue management emerges as a crucial price management tool to face competitiveness and business growth. This study aims to analyze the practices and advantages of revenue management, as well as understand if its implementation in Portugal influenced the revenue and growth of the hotel industry. It also intends to analyze whether there is adequate revenue training or if further training should be required. A quantitative methodology was used, and 284 answers were collected. From those answers, 115 were validated, analyzed, and discussed. Conclusions were made, and finally some limitations were presented as well as suggestion for future research.

In Portugal, news shows that the impact of COVID-19 in the hospitality sector was more noticeable compared to other sectors. This chapter aims to understand the historical trends of hotel industry financial leverage and to analyse the impact of macroeconomic factors on it. Based on the Portuguese reality, it aims to propose a model to be used by managers and shareholders to control the effect of financial leverage over their companies. Two issues are supporting this study: one is if companies evaluate the impact of the chosen financing sources on shareholders' return; another is to understand whether there is a change in the financial leverage effect, either due to macroeconomic factors or due to cyclical factors not controlled by the market, such as the current pandemic (COVID-19) which demands new challenges to companies. Results highlight that the perception of financial leverage by hotel managers is crucial in crisis situations, as the current case of the pandemic caused by COVID-19.

Purpose The purpose of this research study is to present an overview of hotel revenue management (RM) research articles published in scholarly journals during the 2001-2013 period while offering a direction for future research that focuses on RM in the hotel industry context. Design/methodology/approach Using Boolean search keywords across the period of 2001 to 2013, a total of 83 hotel RM-related research journal articles were queried. To ensure that all the identified articles were hotel-RM related, each article was independently reviewed; 70 research journal articles were identified as relevant for inclusion in this study. Findings RM has been and will continue to be a critical tool for the hotel industry, especially since the rise of its perceived strategic role among hoteliers. The RM process is shifting from a tactical to a strategic approach. Also, RM has become more technology driven and it is becoming more customer-centric. Hoteliers should spend more effort and resources on training and educating revenue managers. Research limitations The content analysis is limited to the databases available to the research team. Practical implications This study serves as a resource for scholars interested in RM research in the hotel industry and documents the focus of RM research and the key issues offered by scholars. Originality/value No study has previously offered an overview of RM research articles focusing on the hotel industry (covering the years since 2000). The manuscript serves as framework for scholars who may wish to identify existing research patterns and pursue new directions.

PurposeThis study aims to develop a software agent-knowledge procurement management tool to address uncertainties from external and internal environments, such as record failure, slow logistics auditing and distribution delay toward improving procurement management in retailing enterprises.Design/methodology/approachQuantitative methodology was used to collect data using a self-administered survey from randomly selected procurement staffs, marketers and customers to measure their perception regarding the feasibility and acceptance of the implemented agent-knowledge-based procurement management tool.FindingsResults from empirical analysis reveal that the implemented tool facilitates collaboration and interaction among buyers, sellers and procurement managers toward enhancing procurement managers’ flexibility to handle unexpected exceptions. In addition, results confirm the feasibility of the implemented tool in supporting procurement management toward handling inventory failure exception, which occurs in traditional procurement approaches. Moreover, descriptive results from user acceptance test verify that the tool was accepted by the respondents.Research limitations/implicationsThe limitation of this study is that the implemented tool is evaluated using data collected from respondents in Malaysia retailing enterprise only; thus, the results cannot be generalized to other enterprises and country. In addition, research implications from this study design a methodological and comprehensive software agent-knowledge-based model that support buyers, sellers and procurement managers with information to facilitate buying and selling operations.Practical implicationsPractically, the designed software agent-knowledge-based model describes how software agents collaborate with each other to facilitate procurement tasks and also use the knowledge base in the implemented tool to provide information sharing platform that manages the dynamics of procurement operations.Social implicationsThis research integrates software agents which are autonomous programs that carryout pre-defined task on behalf of end users. Socially, this study would be useful for procurement managers in developing mechanisms for instilling insights in retailing operations.Originality/valueThis research is among the first to attempt to develop a software agent-knowledge-based model to support procurement management in the retailing enterprise domain. It contributes to promote e-procurement practices by implementing a software agent-knowledge-oriented tool to address uncertainties experienced in retailing enterprise. It is envisaged that this study will provide basis for future research into e-procurement practices for retailing businesses in Malaysia and beyond.

Revenue management (RM) in the hotel industry is fundamental as a revenue enhancer, and it is an integral part of the overall strategy of many hotel properties. However, considering the complex, technical, and costly structure of RM, not all properties can utilize it properly; consequently, they may need to outsource this function. By focusing on resource-based view (RBV), this study examined the rationale behind RM outsourcing strategy. The findings of this study provide useful information in expanding our understanding of how hotel managers make an outsourcing decision in a highly complex RM environment. The empirical findings of the study also provide a confirmation of RBV as a useful tool in RM outsourcing research.

Internet is one of the biggest revolutions throughout the history of mankind. It has been opening minds, flourishing new abilities and creating social inclusion chances, helping to lead people to economical growth and a feel of purpose. Internet and its branches also bring issues, inherent to the ways of production, share ability and copyright, empowerment and other new challenges. This paper aims to highlight some examples of researchers regarding their studies on literacy (and illiteracy) in the WEB, inviting readers to think about the creative usage of Internet, facing it as much more than a mere tool: as a rich and challenging part of our lives, questioning the thoughts that usually leads us to “on” and “offline” categories. This classification seems to do not answer today's problems any longer, specially with the Internet of Things and Big Data reaching critical mass. Experiences with the School of the Future Research Laboratory – USP and more episodes are expounded, composing a peculiar landscape of the Internet as part of development of new skills and ways of thinking the world and mankind.

Room revenue is one of the biggest revenues in the hotel industry which is cited in the literature contributed 70-75% to total hotel revenue. Due to these roles, extant studies have been done in room revenue management. This study applied archival data to answer the proposed research questions. Prior to conducting empirical research personal approaches have been done by contacting directly hotel managers in resort area of Nusa Dua Bali to see the possibility of obtaining theneeded data. We got information that data on revenues especially rooms were prohibited for research activities. It may only be used for internal hotel use only. The managerial implications of this study are the following. First, that the management of MBLH hotel should design itsroom rate structures in such a way that could capture the dynamics of the seasons and guest segments. Second, that the management of MBLH hotel should review its policy on marketing especially on room rates contracts with all of its partners. The findings of this study areapplicable only for the MBLH hotel and thus they cannot be generalized for hotels in Bali. Second, the length of daily observation covered only for 488 daily observations. It needs a longer daily observation to achieve a better result. Based on those limitations it is strongly suggested to conduct a similar study covering all classes of hotels all over Bali province with longer daily observations.

Abstract Hotels, like any other businesses in a given location, can be threatened by natural disasters, usually with significant and long-term consequences. The hotel industry is particularly vulnerable and exposed to the risk of property being physically damaged or completely destroyed. Apart from the physical damage, there is also an accompanying economic risk of the tourism sector suffering as tourists avoid areas affected by a disaster event. Therefore, hotels in the areas prone to natural disasters must ensure they are resilient enough to carry on through the turbulent period until regular business levels return. This study is based on survey responses of 63 hotel managers from the 12 European countries most frequently affected by natural disasters. The study relies on multi-capital predictor based approach and examines hotel resilience to natural disasters. It has been found that managers’ previous experience of a natural disaster, duration of managerial experience, and organizational category and size have a positive effect on hotel resilience. Moreover, hotels must anticipate such situations and continuously drill how to respond efficiently and adapt quickly in order to ensure business sustainability. Practical implications, study limitations and future research recommendations are also discussed.

China's socioeconomic accumulation in the last 30 years has been probably one of the most outstanding global developments and has resulted in massive new challenges for core and periphery countries. The article examines how China's rapid and massive integration to the world market has posed new challenges for countries such as Mexico - and most of Latin America - as a result of China's successful exportoriented industrialization. China's accumulation and global integration process does, however, not only question and challenges the export-possibilities in the periphery, but also the global inability to provide energy in the medium term.

The research paper is an empirical work to ascertain the awareness and satisfaction levels of the hotel guests on the sustainability practices in Five Star hotels in Delhi. This paper also aims to determine the extent to which certain sustainability practices influence customer preferences and requirements. The methodology used in this research included a survey method, combined with an extensive secondary research and descriptive methods. The survey was conducted in selected Five star and Five-star deluxe hotels in Delhi from June 2016 until September 2016. The results of the study establish a direct relationship of sustainability practices with customers satisfaction in Five Star Hotels in Delhi, however, it reveals that the prevailing sustainability practices do not satisfy the guests to a considerable extent. The research results can be used by hotel managers in order to improve and adopt sustainability strategy in their management policy in order to raise the level of awareness towards the hotels sustainability initiatives undertaken and then to meet the demands of cognizant guests and for the sake of its own business survival.
