Scopus Analysis of the Academic Research Performed by Public Universities in Galicia and North of Portugal

Scopus is recognized by experts as one of the best, most rigorous, and most complete bibliometric databases. The present work used Scopus-based bibliometric analysis and Pearson correlation coefficients to analyse the research output of three universities in the Galicia region of Spain and three public universities of North of Portugal. The purpose of this study was to understand the current state of Galician and Northern Portugal academic and scientific research, to identify the main research fields in which the region stands out, and to compare and contrast the academic production of the six universities. The main conclusion to be drawn from this study is that scientific production in the Euroregion Galicia-North of Portugal is not concentrated on a few study fields, but covers a wide range of subjects, from medicine and chemistry, to computer science or engineering. The University of Porto stands out, both in scientific production and in the number of researchers.

AbstractScholars have widely recognised the importance of academic relationships between students at the university. While much of the past research has focused on studying their influence on different aspects such as the students’ academic performance or their emotional stability, less is known about their dynamics and the factors that influence the formation and dissolution of linkages between university students in academic networks. In this paper, we try to shed light on this issue by exploring through stochastic actor-oriented models and student-level data the influence that a set of proximity factors may have on formation of these relationships over the entire period in which students are enrolled at the university. Our findings confirm that the establishment of academic relationships is derived, in part, from a wide range of proximity dimensions of a social, personal, geographical, cultural and academic nature. Furthermore, and unlike previous studies, this research also empirically confirms that the specific stage in which the student is at the university determines the influence of these proximity factors on the dynamics of academic relationships. In this regard, beyond cultural and geographic proximities that only influence the first years at the university, students shape their relationships as they progress in their studies from similarities in more strategic aspects such as academic and personal closeness. These results may have significant implications for both academic research and university policies.

Resumo O entendimento das causas e as principais razões que influenciam o modo como os pesquisadores se articulam e constroem suas redes de colaboração científica ainda é uma questão em aberto na pesquisa acadêmica. De fundamental importância para o desenvolvimento de novos indicadores e modos de avaliação da produção científica, o conceito de redes sociais permite operar novos planos de análise, contribuindo com seus aspectos estruturais e dinâmicos ao estudo dos mecanismos e gatilhos causais que levam à constituição dessas redes de colaboração científica. A obtenção de atributos individuais dos pesquisadores, de dados de constituição das redes ao longo do tempo e o modo de desambiguação dos nomes que compõem essas redes de colaboração têm se mostrado os principais desafios de estudos das redes. O objetivo deste artigo é descrever como concebemos uma maneira de estudar as redes de colaboração de uma universidade, com foco específico na Universidade de São Paulo, identificando suas principais estratégias de conectividade e mecanismos causais, além de encontrar as relações entre suas redes e diferentes níveis de produtividade científica de seus participantes. Vale frisar que o artigo apenas descreve as questões da pesquisa e o modo de tratá-las, ficando sua execução para os próximos passos deste trabalho de pesquisa. Para tanto, pretende utilizar como base de análise uma Biblioteca de Produção Científica Institucional em desenvolvimento pelo SiBi/USP, que coleta os artigos publicados por membros da universidade em bases de dados de indexação de revistas nacionais e internacionais, tais como Scielo, Web of Science e BioMed, além da utilização da base de dados institucional para obtenção dos atributos individuais dos pesquisadores participantes dessas redes de colaboração.Palavras-chave análise de redes sociais, indicadores, cientometria, modelos causais.Abstract The understanding of the causes that influence how researchers articulate and build their scientific collaboration networks is still an open question in academic research. Of fundamental importance for the development of new indicators and methods of evaluation of scientific literature, the concept of social networking helps operate new levels of analysis, contributing their structural and dynamic aspects to the study of causal mechanisms and triggers that lead to the formation of these networks of scientific collaboration. Obtaining attributes of individual researchers, data on the constitution of networks over time and mode of disambiguation of the names that make up these collaboration networks have been the main challenges in the area of research networks. The purpose of this article is to describe how we designed a way to study a university’s collaboration networks, focusing on the University of São Paulo, and identifying their key strategies, connectivity and causal mechanisms, as well as finding links between their networks and different levels of participants’ productivity. It should be noted that this article only describes the research questions and how to treat them, leaving their implementation to the next steps of this research. The database used for analysis was the Institutional Scientific Production being developed by Sibi/USP, which collects articles published by members of the university indexed in national and international databases such as Scielo, Web of Science and BioMed, as well as an institutional database to obtain the individual attributes of the researchers participating in these networks.Keywords social network analysis, indicators, scientometrics, causal model

Academic entrepreneurship has been one of the main research fields over the past 20 years, specifically due to the interest of policy makers in this topic. Initially, this interest focused on the creation of university spin-off (USO) firms; although given the new circumstances of the university and its context, there is a need to steer the research topic toward survival. This is because the simple creation of USOs, without their being able to survive or create value, is useless. This article focuses on one of the determining factors of the success of USOs, as measured by employment and sales growth: the influence of institutional- and ecosystem-level variables. Through a backward sequential process, our results show that the business size and the public support in the field of training and bureaucracy are the main elements that affect success.

This study aims to identify research trends in student experience in higher education through analyzing the topics around which research on university students’ experiences has been conducted. Using the topic modeling technique, the Scopus database for studies published up to 2017 containing the terms “student experience” and either “higher education” or “tertiary education” in their titles, keywords, and abstracts was searched. After excluding overlapping studies, a total of 1211 studies were extracted. The articles were then classified into a total of 21 topics on university student experience, including “Learning with online technologies”, “Practice at the university”, and “Diversity in college”. The results of the current study indicate that it will be possible to offer various programs to support more valuable and better student experience at the university level. Thus, this study elucidates the ways in which research fields regarding student experience have been constructed and the ways in which the main research trends have changed.

This round table presents an overview of activities developed at higher education institutions with graduate and postgraduate studies in dance in Brazil, especially southern Brazil. Oddly enough, amid the global crisis in early 2008, the Brazilian government launched an educational program that allowed the expansion of courses at the graduate level, including dance, in several public and free universities. As an example of this scenario, we present our experiences in two public universities, UFRGS and UDESC. These dance courses have seen increasing interest and confrontation the presence of artists and researchers seeking to investigate their own work or the work of others. How can we contemplate structuring contents and methods to teach dance in the university context? How does a dance artist associate the experience of dancing to academic research? How does teaching dance force universities to think about embodied knowledge? The situation of teaching dance in Brazilian universities shows that there is still a lot to be done, considering that the creation of these courses is rather new and that dance, in this context, is an area of ongoing consolidation. The struggle to create a greater number of dance courses in universities is part of the discussion of this session. The practice of teaching dance in universities seeks to articulate repertoires of knowledges that belong to different traditions and artistic experiences transversed by reflections about contemporary dance, and to qualify the teacher, the dancer, and the researcher.

Conhecimentos sobre Microbiologia promovem o cuidado pessoal, para com a saúde e o meio ambiente. Isso contribui, em uma perspectiva mais ampla, para a formação de seres mais conscientes de sua realidade. A extensão configura-se como uma das finalidades da Universidade, por meio da qual institui práticas cidadãs de pesquisa e ensino direcionadas à comunidade em geral. O presente estudo teve como objetivo analisar o perfil das ações de extensão universitária que abordam temas da Microbiologia, baseando-se na produção científica nacional das últimas duas décadas. Tais ações de extensão foram encontradas em 109 publicações deste período. Predominaram ações na área da Microbiologia Clínica (40/109), destacando-se temas como Educação e Promoção da saúde (32/109 e 22/109, respectivamente). Entre as doenças abordadas nestas ações, as Viroses (13/109) foram preponderantes frente às Parasitoses (3/109) e as Micoses (2/109). O ensino também tem sido o foco das ações de extensão em Microbiologia, uma vez que a maior parte delas desenvolveu ou aprimorou Práticas educativas (29/109), atendendo majoritariamente ao público escolar (42%). As universidades públicas participam massivamente destas ações, representando 91% das iniciativas. As informações geradas retornaram aos participantes em 74% das ações analisadas, demonstrando a importância da extensão para veicular conhecimentos científicos em diferentes públicos. Este estudo pode contribuir para que as ações voltadas à Microbiologia cresçam, se fortaleçam e aumentem ainda mais a sua significância social. This knowledge contributes, in a broader perspective, to the formation of beings more aware of their reality. One of the purposes of the University, the extension is the set of research and teaching practices directed to the community in general. This study aimed to analyze the profile of university extension actions involving Microbiology themes, based on the national scientific production of the last two decades. These extension actions were found in 109 publications of this period. Actions in the ​​Clinical Microbiology area predominated (40/109), highlighting topics such as Education and Health Promotion (32/109 and 22/109, respectively). Among the diseases addressed in these actions, Viruses (13/109) were preponderant against Parasitic infections (3/109) and Mycoses (2/109). Teaching has also been the focus of extension actions in Microbiology, since most of them have developed or improved educational practices (29/109), supporting mainly the students (42%). Public universities participate massively in these actions, representing 91% of initiatives. The information generated returned to the participants in 74% of the actions analyzed, demonstrating the importance of extension to convey scientific knowledge in different audiences. Abstract Purpose To develop and test a mission-oriented and multi-dimensional benchmarking method for a small scale university aiming for internationally first-class basic research. Design/methodology/approach An individualized evidence-based assessment scheme was employed to benchmark ShanghaiTech University against selected top research institutions, focusing on research impact and competitiveness at the institutional and disciplinary levels. Topic maps opposing ShanghaiTech and corresponding top institutions were produced for the main research disciplines of ShanghaiTech. This provides opportunities for further exploration of strengths and weakness. Findings This study establishes a preliminary framework for assessing the mission of the university. It further provides assessment principles, assessment questions, and indicators. Analytical methods and data sources were tested and proved to be applicable and efficient. Research limitations To better fit the selective research focuses of this university, its schema of research disciplines needs to be re-organized and benchmarking targets should include disciplinary top institutions and not necessarily those universities leading overall rankings. Current reliance on research articles and certain databases may neglect important research output types. Practical implications This study provides a working framework and practical methods for mission-oriented, individual, and multi-dimensional benchmarking that ShanghaiTech decided to use for periodical assessments. It also offers a working reference for other institutions to adapt. Further needs are identified so that ShanghaiTech can tackle them for future benchmarking. Originality/value This is an effort to develop a mission-oriented, individually designed, systematically structured, and multi-dimensional assessment methodology which differs from often used composite indices.

The study aimed at identifying the appropriateness of educational outputs in the Saudi public universities for the labor market from the point of view of graduates from the specialization of accounting and finance by investigating the following axes (Motivation in specialization identification, teaching staff in universities, the appropriateness of the study plan for the labor market, and the extent of knowledge of professional tests) and its impact on the quality of educational outputs. The study adopted the inductive method trough reviewing the previous studies regarding the research subject. On the field study, the study used the questionnaire as the study tool. On the statistical side, the following statistical analyzes were conducted (frequencies, percentages, arithmetic means and standard deviations), as well as Pearson correlation coefficients to determine the relationships between the variables of the study. The study population consisted of all graduates from the accounting and finance departments of the Saudi public universities working in the public sector or the private sector or self-employed " entrepreneurial". The field study was carried out in 2018 and the number of participants was (125) graduates from Saudi public universities and (80%) of the participants were under the age of (30) years. This is an excellent percentage as the study focused more on graduates. The study concluded the approval of the sample on each of the following: (the specialization identification was their personal desire, the teaching staff at the university is characterized by knowledge and eruditeness, the quality of study plans in universities and their knowledge of the study plan and its requirements, quality of educational outputs). It also concluded that the most prominent obstacles for graduates in the professional tests was the high financial fees of professional tests. In addition to there was no relationship between the specialization identification and the quality of educational outputs, while there was a relationship between (the efficiency of the teaching staff, the study plan, and the professional tests) and the quality of the educational outputs.

The aim of this study was to improve the commercialization level in Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM). For achieving this goal various factors and issues were examined to identify how they affect the procedure of university commercialization. These factors include the role of technology transfer office /center, availability of finance, availability of potential licensee and entrepreneurial orientation (EO) among the university researchers. Among these four factors, this study focused more on EO among academic researchers and its effect on the commercialization rate. This study was based on a qualitative research method and was designed to use a case study approach. For investigating the factors and issues in this study, a total of ten face-to-face interviews were conducted. The respondents were chosen from inventors, researchers, academic entrepreneurs, and Technology Transfer Office staff in UTM. The researcher utilized the content-analysis approach to analyze the data obtained from the semi-structured interviews of the respondents. The results indicated that EO among the university researchers, the role of technology transfer office /center, the availability of potential licensee and availability of finance were significant to the research output commercialization at university. Overall, the most critical factor was availability of finance.

Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is a neurodegenerative disorder that is characterized by cognitive deficits, problems in activities of daily living, and behavioral disturbances. Electroencephalogram (EEG) has been demonstrated as a reliable tool in dementia research and diagnosis. The application of EEG in AD has a wide range of interest. EEG contributes to the differential diagnosis and the prognosis of the disease progression. Additionally such recordings can add important information related to the drug effectiveness. This review is prepared to form a knowledge platform for the project entitled “Cognitive Signal Processing Lab,” which is in progress in Information Technology Institute in Thessaloniki. The team tried to focus on the main research fields of AD via EEG and recent published studies.
